Nice place with good location. However, my son missed his morning coffee since there was none. In the bathroom, there was only a bar soap. For the price paid, would expect some standard amenities. We would have liked if Ray’s Cat gave us some space and privacy to enjoy the patio for our prayer and breakfast.

The amazing view

Outstanding property, outstanding host! Every bit of this sweet cottage made us feel at home and welcomed. The little details (like books and games and binoculars) and our feline visitors (shout out to Gin and Tawny) made this unforgettable. It's so peaceful and quiet and you can see straws for miles, not to mention the gorgeous Maui coastline. Loved the sheep and sightings of deer, birds and chickens. Apparently the road is one of the best in Maui for walking/running, you get the coast on one side and sweeping views of the emerald, undulating hills on the other. Waling distance to an adorable coffee shop. We love this place! Mahalo Janice, Ray and Barbara.

We have stayed here many times and each time is perfect. Tranquil, restful and stunning with dramatic cloud displays and grazing deer putting on a show for us. When I am tired and worn out I plan to return here and if that's not possible, I will return here in my mind. Thank you for sharing this special spot with us.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. The pictures seem almost too good to be true online, but then when you get here, you realize that the pictures cannot capture the beauty. Loved it.

We try to return at least twice a year in spite of living just a short distance away. It is wonderfully restoring to be here.

Our third visit to The Star Lookout, and nothing has changed one bit really since our last trip in 2019. Seeing Ray once again was absolutely priceless, and hanging-out with Gin & Tonic (the cats) was perfect for us, as we have a pair just like them at home. Talk about "all the comforts" of home, we love those cats. The Star Lookout is the place to admire God's Art Gallery, both day and night. I am still honored to have contributed photos to the website of the night sky. This trip the clouds were playing and we shot day/night 4k timelapse and counted over 100 deer running in the wild. Janice, you really are a blessing to all of us who have experienced this place. Mahalo nui loa for sharing this amazing house with those of us who are able to stay here even for one night. There is no other place on Maui like this, but no kinder hosts and caretakers either. We sure love you people, and the house. I am already planning for next summer. Aloha, and fo shua, a hui ho!

This is a very comfortable small house in a unique and different location at 3,000 feet elevation overlooking Maalea Bay, on a country road. Great views and lots of privacy and peace and quiet.

In researching Maui before this visit (our first), we were surprised and intrigued to read about the upcountry region on the flanks of Haleakala. We hoped staying here would give us a flavor of the area. It was even better than we had hoped! A wonderful small cottage with a glorious view. The caretaker was very helpful, not only about the cottage itself but also with advice about shopping etc. (The cottage is fairly isolated, although shopping is not far if you know where to go.) We would definitely want to come back here on any future visit to Maui.

We live on Maui and like to spend 3 nights at Star Lookout about every 3 or 4 months. It is a beautiful, relaxing experience. Especially beautiful is the expansive sky, ever changing from sunrise to sunset. We also enjoy the hot tub and the fire pit or the wood burning stove and walks along pastoral Thompson Road at the top of the property.

Of all the places I have traveled, when I tell you this is my FAVORITE vacation rental I have ever stayed at, I mean it. I could go on and on about this amazing cottage and property. We stayed for two nights and didn't want to leave. We sat on the deck right until 11am (check out time) to soak in every last breathtaking view.
A few things we loved about the property:
- The views (obviously)
- The sunrises and sunsets (you have great views for both)
- The character of the cottage - so nicely decorated
- The hot tub!
- Gin & Tonic, the property cats
- The property sheep (forget their names!)
- The fruit available to pick on the property (limes, tangerines, lemons & more)
- Close to Haleakala
- Up the street from Grandma's Coffeehouse (try the coconut crusted french toast & their chai latte)
- & many many other things.
As mentioned, I could go on and on. It was a dream. We WILL be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Our Absolute Favorite
Our stay here in Kula was a D R E A M . The view is encapsulating at every second of the day, and absolutely never gets old. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub, and loved the view from the bed. The little kitchen were perfect, but the deck was where we spent the majority of our time. We made good friends with their cats, Gin and Tonic, and enjoyed watching Lenny and Squiggy and the herds of Axis in the fields ( thank you for providing binochulars!) The sunsets were incredible, and we even ventured out to grab some pizza at Marlow in Makawao and ended up grabbing a beer at Mahalo Aleworks next door, because they had live music going, and it turned out they were partnered, so we could eat the pizza inside! As an East Coaster/ Self-Proclaimed New Haven Pizza Elistist, I really enjoyed the white mushroom pizza, and the sour beers at Mahalo were a delight!
This was the absolute highlight of our trip. We loved every second here. We got in our car at 10:59am on the day of our checkout and literally shed a tear, because we didnt want to leave. We can't wait to come back one day. Thank you so much for the opportunity to experience this absolute piece of Heaven. Mahalo. Dee & Kris

Heaven on Maui
We had an amazing time in the Upcountry thanks to this amazing cottage. It was so comfortable and the views were stunning no matter the time of day. The outdoor firepit was put to good use, even in the summer as the nights were cool. And sitting in the hot tub enjoying the stars was an experience not to be missed. Add in the wonderful resident sheep, cats and local deer and birds, and this was a rejuvenating stay for the whole family. We will definitely be back!

This is the perfect destination if you want to get away from it all! Quiet and serene, it is a place to unplug and watch the sunsets and stars.

Wonderful stay
We were only able to stay for 2 nights, which was way too short, but this is an outstanding place to stay in upcountry Maui. Sitting at 3000 feet above sea level, there were great views of both coasts as well as Haleakala. It was also fun to enjoy goats and deer grazing and playing nearby. At night we were able to enjoy the sunset and then the multitude of stars coming out shortly afterward. We will absolutely look into staying here again when we return to Maui.

MY FAVORITE PLACE ON MAUI TRIP!!!!! A-MAZ-ING VIEWS!!
Just can't say enough about how much we loved this place. We stayed 3 different places on Maui in 1 week and this was my favorite!! :) Basecamp for 2 nights to check out Haleakala. Compact and cute. Bed seems odd at first, crammed into the corner with the windows -- but OMG, so fantastic to have arrived/slept in the dark, seeing the lights that I knew were Kihei and Kapulua and then waking up to see it all in daylight. And the 2 friendly sheep just outside. And the bed was sooooo comfy. And the gas stove is amazing - kitchen more than well equipped and great basic supply of spices. Deer heard seen daily off the back deck; we were able to count at least 39 of them at a time. Make sure to check out the book recommended on the tackboard that reveals the past about the owners -- how COOL!!!!! Host was immediate communicative on anything needed. Stars were gorgeous. Used the hot tub - wonderful, plenty hot. Friendly cat greeted us every time we were outdoors.
We picked a few oranges and limes while there in March. The herbs were not in season.
Noticed the male owner of the place roadbiking along the lane ; was nice to say hi. Didn't know his back story at the time. Humble lovely man.
Loved, loved, loved this place. Has a guestbook - we left a note.
"Good to know":
- Wifi not working on arrival, because it had been unplugged,. I'm decently tech savvy and was able to reconnect and get it working without bugging the host
- laundry is mentioned in the listing but couldn't find it described in the host book. Contacted host via VRBO and learned it is in an outdoor laundry house up behind the owner's home. You need to walk by the owner's doors/windows to use -- they didn't seem to mind at all, I asked ahead of time just to be courteous. Worked very well.
- hot tub is not connected directly to the unit. It's about 30 yards away. Easy to get to and use, but it's actually somewhat between this VRBO and the host's house.

Best Place to Stay in Maui
I stayed here a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed myself. So I returned to have an even better time than my last visit.
As soon as I stepped out of my car, there was a noticeable peacefulness that just enveloped me. The garden is beautifully maintained. There are fruit trees with yummy tangerines.
The view from the deck is absolutely breathtaking. The skyline is constantly changing. The view at sunset is absolutely breathtaking. The deck offers privacy. I had most meals here while I admired the view.
The inside of the cottage is kept sparkling clean. The fridge was spacious enough for all of my groceries from Mana. The kitchen had everything I needed to cook simple meals.
One of my favorite parts of the cottage is the bed that has an amazing view of the skyline. I can also view the sheep. The bed is super comfortable and the sheets were very nice quality.
The bathroom has lots of natural light. The shower is beautiful.
One of the biggest reasons for returning to this property is to see the cows and sheep. They are peaceful to be around. The walk on the road is special too.
The property manager is friendly and pleasant. Janice was very responsive as well.
Thank you for allowing me to stay at this very special place, Janice!

Blissful Relaxation
Love staying at Star Lookout so very much. This was our 3rd stay. We spend most of our time relaxing on the deck enjoying the view and cooler weather. Soaking in the hot tub, stargazing, roasting marshmallows at the fire pit, and sleeping in the clouds helped us all relax and have a great time. The house is clean and supplied with everything you need. If you can find an open date book it! You will not be disappointed.

Unmatched beauty in the Upcountry!
Absolutely loved the Star Cottage- unbeatable views and upcountry location. Spent evenings relaxing on the deck watching the sunset after day trips all around the island. Easy drives to the beaches, grocery stores, farmers markets, airport, and the mountains. Great starting point for the 'Road to Hana' and to drive to see sunrise on Haleakala. Owner is very nice and responsive.

Spectacular
Stayed with my wife and two kids age 10 and 11. The location is really amazing and very quite. We did day trips all over the island and returned to our quiet cottage every night. (we appreciated the seclusion due to the current covid situation). My daughter enjoyed the loft bed and playing with the two friendly cats. everything was perfect from checkin to check out and Janice was easy to get in touch with if we had any questions. Be sure to check out Kula Bistro if you are looking to eat out. (BYOW)

STUNNING VIEWS AND GREAT LOCATION ON THOMPSON ROAD UP IN KULA
This tiny house has the most incredible views and so peaceful. The Sunrise & Sunset was magical. Ideal for a couple but you can make it work with friends due to the Upstairs Loft. The only safety issue was the tile around the fireplace, which is raised and one of us stubbed our toe on it. We placed pillows around it to avoid this during our stay.
Great place for hanging outside on the big deck and eating on the outdoor dining room table. The hot tub was also so nice to use after a long hike as well as with morning coffee. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to prepare a nice meal.
The outdoor fire pit was so nice to gather around with my family / friends after dinner. The property manager is onsite and so helpful and friendly.
5 stars for the review and I will definitely be back again

Fabulous cottage - the best of Maui!
This is a fantastic cottage! The house was stocked perfectly, with just about anything you could need - including Splenda (my favorite) and Tony Sacherie's spice! The views are so relaxing and amazing, you forget that you are on Maui, and feel like you have been transported to peaceful paradise land! The beds were super comfortable, the grounds impeccable. The bathrooms were new and modernized, we felt pampered throughout. We even had a cat who kept us company, and made us forget about missing our own cats! The hot tub was an extravagant addition, star gazing from the hot tub was just amazing (temps at night got to mid 50's). We only stayed here for two nights, but wished for many more - now this is how we like to experience Maui! It was quiet, away from the hustle-bustle of the resort world on South and West Maui, and just completely relaxing. Not to mention the entire Thompson road - fantastic and fun road! We watched a herd of deer each evening, some males even fighting for territory - as a full on immersion nature show off the deck!. I would definitely stay here again - in fact, we are already planning how and when to return to this cottage next year! Thank you so much for this wonderful stay!

Stellar visit
Mesmerizing, constantly shifting view. Fascinating gently grazing herds of graceful deer. Enjoyed the space and the peaceful quiet here so much our only sojourn off the property was a stroll up Thompson Road.

One of our favorite places ever!
This was such a wonderful getaway. We were in Maui for work but stayed extra days to enjoy the island. We spent some time on the coast, and then came to this gem in upcountry. It was a whole other world. Spending time on the deck or in the star bed with the breeze blowing was so relaxing, and we loved star gazing at night from the hot tub. It's also close to a great winery and the lavender farm. The friendly neighborhood kitties were a bonus. :-) We would love to stay here again!!!

Incredible Country side Property
An absolutely amazing property, we had such a wonderful experience! We decided to stay here for only 2 nights and a resort the other 5; but looking back we wished we stayed here longer! We got in super late at night and Ray (lives on other house on property) kindly greeted us and showed us around. We cooked two meals in this kitchen and we felt like it was well equipped for almost any meal! Both mornings at sunrise, we were greeted by 2 goats traveling in front of the porch; as well as deer & Roosters (which I couldn't get enough of!). Linen & towels were provided. The views at this property are unreal - during the day its the most surreal overlook of Maui and at night the stars are unlike any night sky I have ever seen. Would highly recommend this propety to anyone looking to stay in Kalu, Maui! And will hopefully be returning soon :)

Quiet and a little pics of heaven in Hawaii
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Star Lookout. Both the owner and the caregiver were kind and helpful. Set in the slopes of Haleakala, the views are spectacular, breakfast outside was amazing, the deer, sheep, chickens, birds, and cattle offered morning cadences relaxing to the soul and mind. Escaping reality was easy here. Love it!

I have rented numerous homes on VRBO and this home was definitely the Best! This property is absolutely beautiful! Thank you Janice for sharing your amazing home with my family.
