We enjoy being on the “quiet side” of the island. But we still have easy access to hiking and biking. We love launching our kayaks from the back yard. And the view is fabulous. I’ll also add that the house is always spotless when we arrive.

This property was located in picturesque Bass Harbor. Filled with beautiful antiques, it was perfect for our little family. This house was well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. I loved the fact that it was on the quiet side of the island during peak season, but still close to many activities to enjoy. We particularly enjoyed sea glass hunting, Beech Mountain hiking, swimming at Echo Lake, and hiking Wonderland and Ship Harbor (all 5-10 minutes from the property. Not to mention all of the other wonderful things to do closer to Bar Harbor. Can’t wait to visit again soon!

This was our fifth visit to Blackacre, and it was especially welcome after not being able to visit Maine for the last 6 years. Suffice to say, once we first visited this quintessential Maine cottage, we didn't want to stay anywhere else. As others have said, the photos do not do this house justice. It is right on the water. There are gorgeous harbor views from the deck (and most of the house) and the sunsets do not disappoint! The house is roomy, comfortable, and homey -- and incredibly clean. The recent addition of fans and AC units is most welcome. We love staying on the "quiet side" of the island -- there are plenty of nearby trailheads; it's a short drive to Southwest Harbor, and it's not that far from Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, and everything else MDI has to offer. This house is walking/biking distance from the Seafood Ketch restaurant (dog-friendly deck), the Bass Harbor Nature Cruise (highly recommended), the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, the Swans Island Ferry, ice cream, and a mini mart with a surprisingly good selection of grocery items. You're down the road from the highly accessible (and beautiful) Wonderland and Ship Harbor trails and the Seawall, which we found to be great for quick dog walks at the beginning or end of the day. If you're visiting Maine and looking for the real-deal experience, this house is it!

Quintessential Maine home with a deck overlooking Bass Harbor. Leave your worries at the doorstep and relax.

The property was as listed. Beautiful sunsets, first morning greeted by a pair of bald eagles. House and furnishings were very homey. Kitchen was well stocked with good quality pans, dishes and glassware. Paul was very responsive, concerned when we lost power due to tropical storm. Despite being on a busy road felt very private and remote.

If you love Mount Desert Island, this is the place to go! The location is great, on the quiet side, easy drive to anyplace you want to be, and walking distance to a well-stocked store and great little seafood/ice cream shacks.
The cottage is more lovely than the pictures show. It has a well-oufitted kitchen (we love to cook in), lovely deck and yard, and the interior is really clean and comfortable.
The host was prompt to reply and very pleasant. This place is a keeper for our list.

We had a wonderful vacation to Maine the third week in September. Our arrival had a bit of drama due to Hurricane Lee approaching the Island. It was down graded to a tropical storm but unfortunately made landfall on the day of our arrival. Our daughters flight was delayed by a day. You can’t do anything about the weather! The good news is the weather was fabulous for the rest of our trip. Communication with our host was great. We loved the house. It has everything you need. I was sold when I walked into the kitchen and found a clean, new sponge by the sink! So many rentals leave dirty old sponges! We loved the quiet location and view by the harbor is lovely. It is a bit of a drive to the more popular attractions and hikes but we had our car and we’re prepared for that. I would highly recommend this rental.

The pictures in the listing do not do this cute little house justice. It is an old, charming home in excellent condition. It’s filled with useful and thoughtful antiques. An old weathervane pointing out the directions, a roll top desk to sit at and do work, antique book cabinets filled to the brim with interesting titles, beautiful wooden chairs to sit in… it’s a special little place. For our family of 4, it was the perfect size. My teen children opted to not share the second bedroom and my son slept in the TV room that had a couch that opened to a bed. The French doors even thoughtfully had blinds that could be rolled down for privacy. We also really enjoyed the beautiful night sky as we lay on the recliners on the deck. And there was a telescope and binoculars to use too. The owners really thought of everything.
The only downside of the home was the shower situation. The upstairs shower has the angle of the roof in it and cannot be used by anyone tall. There is a stall shower in the downstairs bathroom but it’s small and dark. That was my only complaint. But I’ll deal with it for the rest of the house!

We had a wonderful stay and after seeing the crowds in Bar Harbor we were glad to be staying on the “quiet side.” We spent our days enjoying all that Acadia has to offer and our evenings enjoying the house and everything IT has to offer. The harbor view is spectacular and instantly relaxing. Spectacular sunsets were followed by crystal clear night skies. We were lucky enough to be there during a meteor shower. The house was lovely and as advertised. We hope to be back.

We were back this year. We love that the property is right on Bass Harbor. We sit and look at the water, enjoy the sunsets, look for birds. Also convenient to Acadia for hiking and biking. Close to Southwest Harbor. Went kayaking right off the property.

The house was very clean inside and out. It has a huge yard that would be great for kids to play in. We didn’t have an issue with mosquitoes as other reviewers noted. You can’t really get in the water as it’s located high into Bass Harbor and therefore low tide leaves it very muddy not sandy or rocky.
The house is very roomy and a little quirky in a charming way. It’s located on a little lane with one other house which is barely visible. There is one other house next to it (the pier shown in the pictures belongs to the house next door). The deck of the neighboring house is visible to the Black Acre deck. There is quite a bit of road noise but it quiets down at night.
While there, we hiked at near trails, ate at several restaurants (Thortons was our favorite), steamed lobsters in house (found a guy that sold them for $7 lb), drove up Cadillac mountain and rented kayaks on Long pond.
The weather was fair but we made the best of it. Overall good vacation!

Beautiful setting, convenient to Acadia trail heads, kayaking, boating, ferries, restaurants, lobster.
Very comfortable house with all the essentials. We ate a lot of our meals in, so, it was important to be able to cook. This small country kitchen was perfect and we even grilled lobsters two nights.
Great hosts and pet friendly. I highly recommend.

The property is right on Bass harbor allowing a fantastic opportunity to watch the tides and the amazing sunsets. I grew up in Bass Harbor and wanted the feel of my home town, this property provided that.

We were so close to any activity we did, I couldn't think of a better place to be! The cottage was immaculate and everything was as promised. Plenty of extra essentials and more than enough room for a weeks worth of supplies. We can't wait to come (go) back.

We loved our time at this home. It was immaculately clean, with more space than we anticipated from photos. The real showstopper is the view from most rooms of the house and the large deck. Despite a somewhat quirky layout of the kitchen, we had no issues making nightly meals. We enjoyed being on the quiet side of MDI, but ease of getting to most everything we wanted to do. Would recommend to friends and return ourselves.

Spent a lovely week enjoying sunsets on the deck, boiling lobster, relaxing, and kayaking in Bass Harbor (you can't beat the easy launch site!)
The house was exceptionally clean and more spacious than we expected. We converted the downstairs sitting room to a bedroom (couch folds down) for my father in law and the living room was still plenty spacious for our group of four adults to relax.
Location is great, five minute drive from Southwest Harbor and some easy walks on the ocean. Bit further from Acadia and Bar Harbor hubbub which meant less traffic and quieter evenings.
Would definitely stay at Paul's again!

We were stunned with the beauty right in the back yard. We watched the tide go in and out and enjoyed the spectacular sunsets. One night we used the fire pit and made s'mores. Often had meals on the deck. Very clean, lots of space. We like the quiet side of the island. Yet we could easily get to the national park for hiking and cycling.

Everything about our stay at Blackacre was perfect! The location on the quiet side of MDI was exactly what we were looking for, with plenty of space, impeccably clean and appointed, a wonderful deck overlooking the harbor, and easy access to launch our kayaks from the lawn. We highly recommend Paul and Blackacre in Bass Harbor!

We had a great time, Bass Harbor is located near South Harbor with good dining options. Nice views, close to everywhere, no more than 20-30min everything. I loved the house, well appointed, had everything we needed for a great week in Maine.

We had a wonderful week on Bass Harbor. The cottage was very clean and has much vintage charm. The location is great, views are amazing, the deck has beautiful views and sunsets (although it gets direct sun with little shade most of the day). The little beach is fun to search for crabs and seashells with the littles. The 2 bedrooms were perfect for a family of 4, and the queen bed was very comfortable. The living room/dining area is very spacious and the separate tv room/den was a nice added bonus. The kitchen was fine, although not much room for cooking. The owner was very quick to respond to any questions…. Would definitely stay again!

The location alone is fantastic, a grassy lawn that slopes to the water and magical sunsets. This Quiet Side home is quintessential Maine and very comfortable. From the furniture to the books on the shelves, I had a hard time remembering that I wasn't actually in my own house! During our stay we had a couple of questions and Paul answered immediately. We absolutely expect to return.

Family Getaway
What a beautiful place to spend a week in the summer! My partner and I brought our two young children and our dog along for the vacation and we had more than enough space in the house and the sunsets could not have been more beautiful. We loved playing by the water with the little ones and enjoying a glass of wine on the deck after putting them down for bed.
Bass Harbor / Southwest Harbor is a great place to stay for families looking for a little less hustle and bustle than Bar Harbor. The drive to Acadia is relatively short and we made the 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor twice as well.
Couldn't recommend this play more and definitely will be visiting again with the family!

This was our second time staying at the house and it was just as incredible. The house is in a great location with water views. The host is also very accommodating and helpful.

Beautiful Location
The house reminds you of the old coastal cottages. The views are beautiful! The location is close enough to the park to access it, but far enough away to be peaceful.

A Perfect Stay on Acadia Quiet Side
A perfect fall stay in Bass Harbor. The house had everything we needed to enjoy our time in Maine. Great view of sunsets from the deck, and lots of interesting bird activity in the harbor.

Wonderful fall visit !
We had a wonderful week at Blackacre ! This house was very quaint and relaxing away from all the bustle of Bar Harbor but close enough to all the amazing parts of Acadia National Park. The view of the harbor is gorgeous. The beds were very comfortable.
Our dogs also throughly enjoyed their time as well :)

Family vacation with teenagers and dog in Bass Harbor
We had a wonderful time staying for our one week family vacation. The main part of the house (downstairs kitchen and front living room and upstairs) seemed to be the older, original part of the house, while the downstairs den, with kitchen extension and bath downstairs were all newer - all parts of the house were in very good condition and nicely furnished and decorated - exactly as the photos on the website showed. The den was much bigger than my impression of the photos, and was where we spent most of our time relaxing on the couch, or eating at the dining table. The den also opened up on to a spacious porch, with gas grill and the beautiful views of the harbor and sunsets. The kitchen was two connected rooms, with limited counter space and no dishwasher - if you like to prepare and cook big meals, it's not the ideal setup, but we cooked our meals there, and all the appliances/plumbing/etc were all new and kitchen was pretty well furnished. The bathrooms were all clean, well maintained, good hot water - upstairs shower did not have much head space for taller people, but downstairs shower was fine - washer/dryer seemed rather new. We used the deck for breakfast in the morning or to relax - I took our dog for walks on the lawn around the house, but I did either wear long sleeves or have bug spray to avoid the mosquitoes in the yard, which seem to be part of the nature in most parts of Acadia. The bed in the master bedroom seemed to be antique - the mattress was soft, not firm. The owner Paul was very responsive to us during our stay - we only had one issue when the gas grill, which worked fine the first couple days, had some kind of blockage, and he sent the caretaker up who fixed it the very next day in time for our next meal. Overall, we were very pleased with the rental and had a great vacation.

Fabulous spot!
The view, water access, charming decor, and impressive library offered something for everyone in our family. We look forward to returning!

Beautiful Sunsets
This place has beautiful back yard sunsets. You can walk in the harbor & look for sea glass and shells. We didn’t utilize the back yard as much as we had hoped to due to all the mosquitoes. The actual house felt more like a rustic cabin or grandma’s older house. The house has some cool antique furniture & old charm. However, the kitchen is not practical for a family to cook dinner in. It’s fine for breakfast, but there is no island or counter space for making dinner, which unfortunately resulted in us needing to eat out with littler kids. Lastly, the master queen bed needs replaced. It’s extremely uncomfortable and disappointing. The kid twin mattresses seem newer and more firm. The sunsets are unbeatable tho.

Authentic Maine Experience
Classic Maine house with view of inlet with sweeping tides and a pair of eagles. Clean, open lovely property. Great location and Southwest Harbor infinitely better than Bar Harbor side! Thank you Paul!

Great cottage
A great property, TV snug with doors, great west facing deck with awesome sunsets, minimal bugs. Some road noise from the adjacent main road. Waterfront muddy at low tide, pebbles at high tide. Decent internet speed.

Beautiful sunsets!
This was a quaint location with a quiet ease to get us into a much needed vacation mode! Soothing bay waters and magnificent sunsets were an added plus. Conveniently located away from the touristy places was an added bonus.

Outstanding location and house
The house was better than advertised. It was in an ideal location on the water on the quiet side of the island, but still only 25 minutes to Bar Harbor and Acadia. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and had the house well stocked with everything you might need. We highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for the quintessential Bar Harbor experience.

Perfect Acadia getaway
This property is a charmer - near the tip of Bass Harbor and the Bass Harbor lighthouse, it is a quiet seaside property where you can have your morning coffee (or afternoon cocktails) looking out on the lobster boats. The house is a comfortable and pretty beach house, fully stocked with all the necessities plus a few extras (warm blanket throws, frosted beer mugs in the freezer) to make you feel at home. The owners are beyond gracious! Highly recommend!
