Recent review - 7/15/2019. Beautiful view, comfortable house
We had a fabulous time staying at this house. Great location with easy access to lots of hiking (Lake Crescent, Sol Duc, Hurricane Ridge). Owners were great. My dad and my son went fishing with Rick and had a great time. The house was super comfortable for the 7 of us. The kitchen was well stocked and the view was amazing. We hope to make it back someday and would highly recommend this house!

House and Property Description:
River House, a 2672 sf home on a high bank above the Elwha River, features views of the River and the distant snow-topped mountains that are a photographer's delight, an ever-changing vista of light and shadow.

The spacious great room/dining area/kitchen is lit by a three-story prow window and invites day's end relaxation with television, wood stove and comfortable leather seating. The dining area features seating for six around a large teak table. The modern kitchen is well-equipped for meal preparation.

The "Sockeye Suite" a light-filled room with an en-suite bath, king size bed, television and walk-in closet, encompasses the second floor, assuring the greatest privacy. A balcony off the bedroom is a fine place to take your morning coffee. The adjacent "Steelhead Room," a cozy spot with a comfortable twin bed, shares a bath with the Sockeye Suite.

On the main floor, a third bedroom features a king- size bed, television, a walk-in closet and an adjacent designated bath. "Waterfowl Room" takes its theme and colors from exquisitely detailed duck prints and decoys. This room features double sliding doors allowing easy outdoor viewing of the River and mountains.

The fourth bedroom is the striking "Upland Game Birds" room featuring images of pheasants and grouse, walk in closet, unique color scheme and furniture, a queen size bed, and a designated bathroom.

A path down to the River allows a close-up view of the changes in the water flow since the the Glines and Elwha dams were removed in2014.

We are blessed with occasional and unpredictable visits from deer and the Herrick Road elk herd, as well as cougar and bear spottings.

Across the River is the Olympic Hot Springs Road entrance to the Olympic National Park. This entry leads to a recently built overlook to the former site of the Glines Dam. (At present, access to the Park via this entrance is limited due to winter storm damage.)

Lake Crescent is about 15 minutes west on Highway 101. The Lodge has a covered porch and outdoor seating fine for sipping your tea, coffee, wine etc and viewing a stunning 624 ft deep lake, recently voted the best in Washington. There are easy flat walking paths on the grounds as well. A mile-long trail leads to the 90 foot Marymere Waterfall.

Olympic Raft and Kayaking is literally "right down the road". Harbinger Winery's Tasting Room is about 6 miles east on 101, on the right side. Right next door is Adventures in Kayaking.

Fishing & Guiding:
Salmon abound in the rivers and ocean in this area with trout and halibut coming in second place.

The Elwha River salmon are recovering their former number since the Elwha and Glines Dams were removed four years ago. As of October, 2018, 5,300 chinook are expected to return this fall to spawn, 15,000 rainbow trout were counted in September and bull trout and summer steelhead numbers are multiplying apace. The Elwha will open to sport fishing in July, 2021 at the earliest. River House has generous frontage on the River that is available to our guests for fishing when it reopens. Rick knows the River like the back of his hand and will be available for scheduled lessons for those new to salmon and trout fishing.

Silver salmon and king salmon are running in the rivers from September (provided there is good rainfall during the month) to February. Steelhead are available from November to the end of March. Salt water salmon fishing season runs from July 1st to August 15th.

Rick guides river drift- boat fishing and can arrange for charter ocean fishing. He also provides guide services for the genetically distinct Beardslee trout found only in nearby Lake Crescent, a most beautiful place. The Beardslee trout season starts June 1st and ends October 31st. They are catch and release only and no license is needed as Lake Crescent is part of the Olympic National Park.
Scenic drift boat trips on the west end rivers are available. A minimum of two and maximum of three persons are necessary to book a drift boat fishing trip and a minimum of a two night stay at River House is also needed. Scenic drift boat trips can accommodate 1 adult and 2 children, ages 8 and up or 2-3 adults. A minimum of two persons is needed for fishing Lake Crescent.
Text Rick for further information at 360 477-1715.

Pet Policy and Fee
We welcome a maximum of two dogs per stay. The dogs must be a year old or older, be neutered or spayed, and treated with flea and tick control such as Frontline or Advantage 3 days prior to arrival. Please groom (brush) your dog shortly before your arrival. A dog bed might be helpul to make your dog feel at home and a crate is strongly recommended if you plan to leave your dog in the house when you go sightseeing or dining out. Please remember that the River House area is heavily wooded and near the Olympic National Park. If your dog gets loose, it may be a difficult, perhaps impossible, task to find him. In addition, coyotes, and cougars are commonplace and the occasional bear has been known to visit. The Herrick Road elk herd visits the field at random. Large antlered buck guard the herd and might react to an excited dog. Please take this seriously and save yourself (and us) some heartache by keeping your pet on a leash and using a collar with contact information on it.

We welcome your pet but can continue to do this only if care of the pet and the house and grounds is attended to.

The pet fee is $100 per stay for one dog and $150 a stay for two dogs.

Just what we were hoping for. Enough space to spread out or be all together. We got a little lost on the way back up from the river, but needed the extra steps! Wish there were window coverings on small bdrm upstairs. Other than that, just perfect! We will be back!

This was absolutely an awesome place with views to die for. We cut out some of our sightseeing so we could hang out at the house. It was a very comfortable house with well stocked kitchen with lots of spices and condiments. We cooked on the grill and used the hot tub. The artwork was very interesting. None of us wanted to leave. Rick was easy to contact. Checking in and out was simple. Overall this was a perfect place.

The house was so nice with huge windows overlooking an incredible view. Even better - the patio and firepit overlooked the same view. We had a great weekend staying at this property!

This home blew our minds. The location is stunning. It is right on the precipice of the hill overlooking the river. Winds blew in from the valley, we could see in the mountains. The sun shown. We really enjoyed our time here. The kitchen is very well stocked with all the pots and pans you need, glasses, etc. Unfortunately, the dishwasher did not work while we were here. Also the hot tub, we enjoyed it in the dark, but then took a look at it the next morning and realized it was dirty and low on water. Overall a wonderful stay!
