About this house rental
Visitors to this beautiful oceanfront home wholeheartedly agree — THIS is what a vacation retreat should be! Secluded, peaceful and tranquil, and surrounded by water on three sides, this beach home is a welcome escape from your everyday routine.
The ocean beach is only a few steps away from the patio on the front of the house, and the patio on the back of the house faces the lagoon with its white sandy flats. No matter where you look, Eleuthera’s gorgeous landscape of soft blues and pink-white sand highlight the unbelievably crystal-clear water.
This beach home setting is an ideal destination for families, but also for groups of adults looking for a bit of paradise. Spacious and comfortable living spaces are provided indoors and out, with quiet areas for reading and napping.
Several patios offer chaise lounges, umbrellas, tables and chairs to help you unwind in the continuous gentle ocean breezes with a book, a gourmet meal, or a glass of wine. The outdoor hot/cold shower is a welcome convenience after a visit to the beach. Luxurious green palms, vines, and other beautiful foliage add to the charm of the lovely tropical surroundings.
And as if all of this isn’t enough, the rate includes a daily housekeeper and on-site chef known for delicious al fresco dishes and desserts, along with her delightful personality. You pay for the food (or catch the fish yourself!), and each day one mouthwatering, healthy meals will be prepared for you using local fruits, seafood, and vegetables.
The lagoon in the back of the house with its knee-to-waist high water is perfect for those with young children, and the lagoon as well as the ocean is also where many guests enjoy the relaxation of kayaking. For the adventuresome, you can arrange a scuba trip, snorkel in front of the house or at Millars Reef, head to Surfer’s Beach for big waves, or charter a deep-sea fishing boat like the “Ocean Fox” out of Davis Harbour or Cape Eleuthera. If you’re partial to tennis, a public tennis court is only about 2 miles away on the route to Wemyss Bight.
Comfortably sleeping 8 to 10, each of the 5 bedrooms provides a lovely water view and has its own private bath. A master king bedroom includes private patios on both the ocean and the lagoon side. Additional bedrooms include a king bed, a room with two twins which can be combined into a king, a queen, and a single. A sixth bedroom/sitting room with private bath has a sofabed that converts to a queen sleeper.
Guests consistently give this lovely home an “Exceptional” 5 out of 5 rating. Many of those are return visitors. Visitors describe their experience as “arrived exhausted, but heading home refreshed and revived.”
If you’re not already familiar with the island of Eleuthera in the central Bahamas, it’s considered a remote tropical paradise, and part of the Bahamas archipelago. It’s known for pink sand beaches and turquoise water, green sea turtles and coral reefs, friendly, warm, and hospitable locals, and a rich cultural heritage.
Loads of natural wonders are also yours to explore on the island. You won’t experience the crowds that are often found on some of the Bahamian Islands. Shell collecting and simply strolling on the broad beaches are delightful activities.
Plan a visit to one-of-a-kind Ocean Hole, an inland swimming hole on the edge of Rock Sound. It’s a “bottomless” natural limestone formation with brackish water that some even claim has healing powers. Tropical fish and turtles populate the Ocean Hole; you aren’t allowed to fish there, but you can feed the fish and swim with the turtles.
Lighthouse Beach is considered a breathtaking beach that offers swimming, small caves and snorkeling. Some say it’s the best beach on the island but you may want to get a local to take you there, as the roads can sometimes be a challenge. Cotton Bay is another option for a wonderful place to jog or walk on the road or the beach.
Beautiful water views on all sides, the soothing sound of ocean breezes and rhythmic waves, comfortable furnishings inside and outdoors, a housekeeper to keep things tidy, and fabulous meals made to order. What more could you ask for?
Please note: Maximum occupancy of these premises at any given time is 10. No exceptions will be made. There is a $100/day surcharge to cover additional needed help if occupancy exceeds 6 people.
No smoking is permitted on the Premises.
There is daily housekeeping service, except on Sundays. Landlord provides a cook who will provide one meal per day. Meals will be provided for Tenant and those individuals identified in the lease agreement. The cost of all food shall be at Tenant expense. Food is available at the market in Rock Sound, however selections are limited.

Another great trip to the Bahamas!

The house and surroundings are beautiful. The pictures don’t do it justice. Ruth, the housekeeper, is extremely helpful and a wonderful chef! The beach and lagoon are excellent for swimming and snorkling. We enjoyed our stay very much and hope to come back

Cute house and very comfortable, and the location is fantastic.

I cannot say enough about Ruth! She is a fantastic cook and concierge! We had something break on our boat and couldn’t get the solder gun we needed to fix it at local hardware stores. Ruth knew someone that had the tool we needed and had it at delivered to the house the same afternoon. She is warm, friendly and has excellent attention to detail. She is flexible and patient and just an all around good person. Though the house itself may look a little dated it is functional, comfortable, incredibly roomy and well stocked.

This is a lovely older home, with large bedrooms and great living space. From the east patio, the ocean is just a few steps away; from the west, a beautiful, peaceful lagoon with a soft, sandy bottom: a great place to relax in the calm water. The kayaking there was great, too. The house has 3 kayaks to enjoy.
Ruth was amazing. She hunted up fresh fish for us several nights, made conch fritters and even some desserts and lots of homemade bread! What a great treat to have someone do the cooking!
The house sits on a beautifully landscaped large lot. It’s the last house on the road and surrounded by water on three sides.
We had a lovely, relaxing week.
One thing: take plenty of bug repellent!

This property was a perfect fit for us (7 people), though could easily have held more. Though the house could use some updating in terms of screen doors, etc, it could not have been more perfectly laid out, situated, clean, and welcoming. We very much appreciated AC in every room and the perfectly positioned bedrooms (most with their own doors to the outside) and were continually stunned to be at the tip of the peninsula between the quiet bay and the more raucous Atlantic. Ruth was patient, kind, and helpful -- it was hard for all of us to leave!

While the path to the property could use major improvement, the home has an amazing setting and Ruth's hospitality, kindness and cooking made the entire trip!

There were 10 of us that stayed at Sanderling! This was a magical trip for our family! The house is so much more beautiful than the photos! It is like you’ve stepped back in time, a time when life is cool and carefree! Five bedrooms have a private bath and the sitting room also has a private bath! The views and the sound of the waves crashing all day and night were incredible! Ruth was the icing on the key lime pie!! She welcomed our group and she treated us with warmth and kindness, we were so comfortable! We spoke to Ruth at the beginning of our stay and we put together a loose menu for breakfasts and dinners we shopped and she prepared the meals! Staying at Sanderling is like staying at your own private mini resort! - Dani Blythe

Really fun place to be! Spent Spring Break there with family and friends. There were eight on our party, with kids from 5 to 16, and we all had fun! Ruth is a gem and more!

The location of this property is perfect. You are surrounded by water. The breezes and the views are restorative. What makes this wonderful house a home is Ruth who treats you and greets you like family. This was an ideal stay for us and I can't imagine it being any less for anyone else. Do not hesitate to stay at Greencastle. And tell Ruth we miss her!

We absolutely LOVED our time on this property!! It exceeded our expectations and we enjoyed every minute. The house is so pleasantly situated where you can see water no matter which window you look out of. Ruth added a lot to our vacation too. She is a wonderful cook and went above and beyond in helping us with various things. She arranged for our rental car and helped us with the conch shells we found. All her food she prepared was delicious. It truly was a magical vacation and everyone in our family had a marvelous time. Wray was also very responsive and helpful in answering my endless questions before the trip. If we ever go back to Eleuthera, we will stay there for sure!

We had a restful vacation at this beautiful, secluded and spacious home on a lovely private beach. Ruth is a gracious host who cooked us fabulous dinners and took care of us all. South Eleuthera is a truly special place and we hope to return again and again.

When I was at this location, I was in paradise. I could not have had a better time and both Ruth and Sid were fantastic. My son and I really enjoyed fishing in the Billfish Tournament. I could not have been more relaxed and I definitely want to return.

I grew up going to Cotton Bay and still cant believe my grandparents sold the house! I recently returned for the first time in 30+ years and stayed at Sanderling with my wife. Other than the fact that the golf course and the clubhouse are overgrown and unrecognizable, nothing has changed and I mean that in the very best way. Many of the people are still the same and if they have died its their children or grandchildren. The diving, fishing, hospitality and peace and quiet are all world class. We will be back early and often!!

My friends and I had a wonderful week at Sanderling. The house was designed for groups and entertaining. Four bedrooms are ocean-front, each with spectacular wake-up views. Ruth is an incredible chef and expertly cooks your daily catch, the fresh fish she procures, or what you buy at the store in Rock Sound. Her bread, muffins and desserts are delicious. Arrange to go fishing as much as you can. Sidney is a pleasant and experienced captain. We can't wait to go back!

The house is wonderfully situated on the ocean and lagoon. The pictures only begin to show this piece of paradise. The beach is lovely and uncrowded. Great walks, swimming, shelling and kayaking. Deep Sea fishing is available and good fun whether the fish and biting or not. Ruth is an added plus. She is a marvelous cook providing delicious meals each day.....One of the best meals was our fresh caught fish. Her desserts are a real treat. This is a perfect spot to get away, relax and enjoy tropical surroundings with friends.

This home is wonderfully situated on a peninsula with ocean on one side and lagoon on the other. House has continual sea breezes making it very comfortable. It is huge and the pictures do not do it justice.
The highlight of this home is Ruth the cook and her friend Loretta. Nothing is too much for them. Ruth prepares three meals a day if you wish and they are always delicious and healthy - she makes a killer chocolate souffle and her key lime pie and her curries are to die for. Both of them also do daily housekeeping. Ruth has a huge personality and humor. She is a delight to be around.
Cotton Bay was obviously a vibrant area in its day but is now becoming very underpopulated and in places uncared for. The golf course does not exist any more and the tennis court is barely playable. There is world class diving about 20 minutes away and the snorkelling is good at many locations on the island. A car is a necessity as this home is about 20minutes from Rock Sound where there is a good but fairly over priced market. We advise taking as much food as you can from US.
This is a WONDERFUL vacation spot for peace and tranquility and just getting off the beaten track. The beach in front of the house is wild and rugged. Great for strolling on and swimmable in places. There are fabulous aquamarine blue sea beaches within a very short drive of the house.

This is the place to go if you truly want to get away from it all!!! To get away from the crowds, the noise, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life...to fully decompress and just relax. This magnificent place boasts a virtually private beach, amazing scenery on all sides, and incredibly comfortable accommodations. I can’t wait to return! Oh, and the cook is magnificent!

This was my third trip in Feb. 2010, and each time my blockbuster memories fade in comparison to how stunning this unspoiled, private Carribean beach is in real life. Cotton Bay was developed by the CEO of Pan Am in the hay day of his airline serving as the flag carrier for the US worldwide. After flying the globe to compare the most jaw-dropping resort locations, he and his wall street buddies chose Cotton Bay to develop their private resort, including a Robert Trent Jones golf course.
This remote location at the southern tip of Eleuthra, was strategically chosen since there is a narrow peninsula that provides nearly 360 degrees water views. The front patio sits about 25 feet above the calm, pristine, turquoise waters of the Caribbean; while the back patio overlooks the tidal bay where we enjoyed undisturbed water skiing.
The house is very comfortable and well appointed, and seems bigger than its 4 bedroom / 5 bath spec. sheet -- perhaps because it sprawls all on one level. Because of the continuous Carribean breezes, my wife and I slept with the sliders opened so sea breezes and surf sounds serenaded us to sleep each night.
Coming from the DC area, there is nonstop service to Nassau, with a short hop to Rock Sound, Eleuthera. It is worth the extra hop to return to this pristine paradise, and get to live for a week or two the dream of Juan Trippe and his jet-setting friends.

This gorgeous house is located on a peninsula at the end of a road, with water on 3 sides: a lagoon and the ocean. You can snorkel right off the beach or charter a boat at the nearby marina to take you to other snorkel/dive spots. You can also fish in the lagoon & ocean and there's tennis & golf just a short walk away. The house is super comfortable for a large group with large rooms to mingle in as well as cozy nooks to have some solo time. There is a constant breeze as the house doors open up so the breeze wafts from one side of the peninsula to the other. Ruth, the cook & housekeeper, is a gourmet chef and every meal was delicious, often with fresh local fish and vegetables or fruit from her personal garden. You'll want the recipe for her muffins and oatmeal cookies! We highly recommend this spot for a totally relaxing getaway. It really is a paradise! We'll be back!

A week at this house was a week in paradise...empty pink beaches, crystal clear water, coral reefs, privacy and Ruth. The setting is spectacular with water on three sides. The house is lovely, open and comfortable with many wonderful indoor and outdoor spots for reading, games or naps. We snorkeled, kayaked and walked the lovely beaches. Tennis was a short walk away. Scuba diving and fishing were available within a 15-20 minute drive. Ruth, the chef, stole our hearts! Her meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) were absolutely incredible, but it was her enveloping warmth and humor that none of us will ever forget!
5.0 / 10.0
This house is PERFECT for a getaway with friends or family looking to spend time with one another. With its own semi-private beach (shared with about 6 other houses on the same road) it is extremely relaxing and particularly good for recharging batteries. To have housekeeping included just gives you more time to relax and Ruth, the cook, is worth the trip to Eleuthra alone. Being on a penninsula between the ocean and a lagoon allows for vews from every room. It is worth an extra flight to get to Eleuthra (one stop in Nassau or Ft Lauderdale) and you can really check out at this IDEAL location. If you are more of an adventurer, Tennis and Golf are a short walk plus a day trip to Harbor Island or Governor's Harbour are great options as well.
