About this cabin rental
Due to bedroom layouts - may not be appropriate for children under 12
A true "cabin in the woods" experience. 5 private acres but one mile from the town of Custer. The cedar house has ceramic tile floors throughout, leather furniture, new kitchen appliances and LOTS of windows.
The main house sleeps 2 in the master bedroom, 1-2 in the attached 'western room' (accessed outside from the porch) and 1 in a portable twin. The guest house sleeps 2 in the main studio room and 1-2 in the small bedroom.
The master bedroom is furnished in aspen log with a queen bed and master bath. A utility room off the kitchen sleeps 1 in a twin bed w/access to the main bathroom and its own entrance. The porch outside the utility room gives access to the 'western room' which has a full size bed with beautiful rock and cedar walls (not appropriate for children under 12)
The Guest quarters is setup like a studio apartment (minus a kitchen) but with a bathroom/shower. The main room has a queen size bed, sofa, tv, armoire, small fridge. The second room has a full size bed a separate entrance and all the character of a cabin setting. (not appropriate for unattended children)
The property has 2 security cameras outside. One on the carport and the other on the northeast corner of the house
We also have a pak'n play and a booster chair w/tray.
There are 4 covered porches the favorite and largest is partially enclosed with comfy wicker furniture. It's a favorite spot for morning coffee, watching thunderstorms or sipping cocktails in the evening. From any porch you can enjoy the view, peacefulness and wildlife.
Custer is in an area known as the 'heart' of the hills and local attractions include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel and Wind Caves, the scenic Needles Highway. It is also 6 miles from Crazy Horse Mountain, several lakes and approximately 45 miles from historic Deadwood and the Rapid City airport. This area also attracts motorcyclists especially during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We also welcome hunters for deer, elk and turkey season. In the fall Custer State Park hosts the famous Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival.

The overall stay was great. The house was exactly as described. We enjoyed the solitude of the location while being so close to Custer.

Great cabin and location. Love the property with space for our 4 boys to roam. So convenient to run into Custer for supplies. Easy trips to Sylvan Lake, Stockade Lake for fishing. Would definitely stay again!

This property is very well stocked and maintained. It has a lot of space for everything you need to do and has an area that family can hang out and spend time. It is an awesome VRBO. This is my second time staying there with my family.

Very clean, with lots of wildlife. A few cars pasted each day. Quite and private. We had a great time. Nothing bad to say.

Being from the flat lands of Illinois we had a lot of goals to check off. Our cozy retreat was just perfect! It was close to town for supplies, central to all our destinations and serene in our down time.

We found this rental to be in an excellent location. We wanted to attend the evening show at Mount Rushmore. From the house it was easy to get to and especially coming home in the dark. It was nice to be so close. Custer, with some excellent restaurants was also close by. The house had plenty of space for two couples traveling together. The detached bedroom and bath made it easy to have some individual quiet time.

Cabin was very clean and furnished very well. We loved how quite it is there even during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We got lucky and had a full super moon that was absolutely beautiful. Coffee in the morning while watching deer and turkeys was a real bonus as well. We had a great time and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay in the Black Hills to stay here. Short drive into town and then explore the beauty of the Black Hills.

Multi generational family and friends
A very unique property. We had the maximum number of allowable guests (9) and it was just a bit tight but very manageable with just a small amount of flexibility required. I personally loved the Cowboy Room (a special sleeping porch) - while it does not have direct access to the house, the laundry room and second bathroom are just a couple of steps away (with a covered porch overhead so no issue with getting wet if it was raining - which it was). The property is just minutes from Custer - but feels a world away. We did lots of tourist things - and the location is central to lots of activities. We loved all the porches - makes the property "live" even larger than it is. The living room with a comfortable sectional and seating for 9 at tables made for a great gathering/dining area. The kitchen is laid out to allow several cooks at one time. The five acres has lots of trees and a large grassy area for lawn games. The separate cottage allowed our youngest family (with young kids) a place to get away from the rest for nap time or just some private quiet time.

Great accommodations. 4 clowns, plenty of room and sleeping arrangements. We all live in the country in northern Mn, so setting was almost like home. Only 3/4 mile of dirt, so bikes didn’t mind.
Would recommend.

Awesome location!
Just returned from a week long stay. This property was perfect for my family of seven. The location serves as a great home base to see all of the sights we wanted to. Really great decor.
My husband and I stayed in the master bedroom in the main house. There is no AC but a combination of ceiling fan and stand up fan kept things cool enough. It was high 90’s one day and then low 60’s the next! Reminded us of home in New England! I would suggest replacing the shower head in the master stand up shower. It’s old and streams of water shot every which way on one setting so we could only really use the three stream pulsating. I didn’t realize until our last day 🙄 that there is a full bath with bath tub off the laundry room.
One word of advice to potential renters…if you can, stop in Rapid City and pick up groceries, before you get here. The local “DakotaMart” has got to be the worst grocery store I’ve every been to! Flies all over the produce, no decent sliced American cheese just the cheap mainly oil stuff and the selection of bread…just plain white bread…was atrocious! The loaf we got was so gross it essentially crumbled in my hand. Many former renters leave some things there like soda or condiments. We grabbed paper towels, plates. But cleaning supplies like dish soap, sponges, laundry soap are well stocked.

Custer property
We stayed here for four days and loved it. The houses were beautiful, clean, and comfortable. The main house stayed relatively cool despite having no AC, the guest house temp was a little more uncomfortable. The houses were impeccably clean and well stocked with necessities. We arrived after dark which made it more difficult to find. I would definitely rent here again.

Idyllic setting
Kids especially had fun exploring the hilly property - remote from other properties but close to town for groceries and close to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park as well as Crazy Horse monument.

Outstanding house
We were 3 couples on motorcycles and the house was awesome, the only thing was when we got into the lock box there was no keys. I got in touch with the contact person and we were able to get in. The house was very big and secluded and just what we wanted.

Great cabin and black hills experience.
It was great for our family. We even had some extended family stay with us one night on their way through SD and it was plenty of room. Location is great and the owner was very helpful with any questions we had.

Peaceful retreat
Beautiful, quiet location-unless you count the migrating geese! It was crazy how many geese were hanging out at the nearby pond and how much the sound of their wings and their honks carried toward the cabin. It was actually quiet beautiful. Saw many deer near the property, but not by the cabin. My kids were probably too noisy for that. Believe the owner when she tells you the sleeping quarters are quite separate. We are used to getting creative with sleeping arrangements on vacation, so this wasn’t a problem for us, but it did require my husband and I to sleep separate (one in guesthouse and one in main cabin). Well appointed kitchen with everything you need for cooking. Beds were comfy. It was a great stay!

Felt like home
Our entire family was delighted . The location was ideal, we had complete privacy but it was close to everything we wanted to see. The kitchen was as well equipped as ours at home and the utensils were very high quality. The porch was delightful, the decor was beautiful. It made our vacation a memorable and happy!

Great for multiple families with older children
This was a family vacation for my self, my son and his 3 older children, my daughter, son-in-law, their 10 year old son and my single daughter. This was the perfect location with the set up provided. We were all able to be together for meals, game nights and just good talks in the main house. But when we needed time just to ourselves it was easily accomplished. My son and his three children 15, 18 & 21 took the guest house. We moved the fold out bed from the utility room into the main house bedroom for my daughter, her husband and son (10). My other daughter and myself took the Western room. It was great that everyone had a real bed to sleep on even though we did have to double up. Everyone reported that they slept well. The older children were really happy that they could get away to the guest house. They stocked the refrigerator with their snacks and drinks and could just chill in there and watch TV. The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to make some wonderful family dinners. I would suggest that some of the utensils probably need to be upgraded and/or replaced. (Spatulas, whisks, cheese grater). The property itself is spectacular. The 5 acres provided plenty of space to roam and release some steam. The multiple porches were terrific. The main porch provided the ample room for family gathering and the smaller porches were much appreciated by my self when I needed some quiet time for reading or just getting away from the noise of teens and their parents. I would definitely recommend this place and everyone in my family is in agreement that they would stay here again.

Great stay in Custer
We recently stayed at this property as we were in town (5 of us) for our nieces wedding which was taking place in Custer State Park. The location was beautiful, a perfect cabin in the woods but close to everything. My husband enjoyed his morning coffee on the porch while taking in the nature. The cabin is wonderfully decorated and the kitchen had everything we needed. The beds in both the main cabin and the secondary were very comfortable, and loved the soft bath towels. The owner made it easy and was very responsive to my emails. We would definitely recommend!

Great Location
Easy to find. Great central location for Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Wind Cave. The kitchen is stocked with enough equipment to cook any meal. My only criticism is that it should be more clear that the second bedroom is in a separate building. So, if you are traveling with kids they need to be old enough to stay in a separate building.. There are lots of windows in the house and beautiful views of the forest, lake (not accessible) deer, and wild turkeys.. Drive the Needles Highway. It’s a must! Ans the Wildlife Loop.

Deer farm
We had a wonderful stay and Mary was easy to work with. Great location and great home, I think there is a deer ranch connected to property, deer all over. Fun to sit on wine porch and watch deer.

Great location
Main cabin was fine. "Guest quarters" were just adequate. As a handyman and remodeler, I saw so much potential. The guest house could easily be brought up to the same standards as the main cabin, so people would want to stay there, rather willing to
stay there. Trouble using the Wi/Fi and the cable TV in the "guest" area was very hard to figure out. Some written instructions could resolve those issues. Very quiet yet super
handy to Custer and other attractions.

Custer Cabin Stay
Our family very much enjoyed staying at this property. It was very relaxing and comfortable. The only complaint I have is that the house was dusty. I realize living by a gravel road is hard to keep up on that. The sample shampoos etc. in the bathroom need to be tossed. They are dirty and dusty and I can't imaging anyone wanting to use them. Besides these two things, it was excellent.

Great cabin, but disappointed in bedrooms.
The secluded cabin nestled in the woods provided for beautiful scenery and view of the wildlife.
The main house was nice and provided everything we needed. The master bedroom and bath were beautiful and I expected the other rooms to be of the same quality, especially since I paid an additional $15/person/night. However, I didn't feel that was the case. The "Guest Quarters" is in a detached garage. In order to get to the 'studio apartment' that was advertised in the guest quarters, you have to walk outside and through a woodshop area that had an overpowering smell that resembled tiki torch oil. The bathroom in the studio apartment had holes in the wall from an old towel rack and the paint wasn't complete on the bottom portion of the wall where a sheetrock repair must have been made. There were cobwebs in the bathroom and the window sills were caked with dirt. The "Western Room" was tiny, dark, and the floors were very dusty and musty smelling. The towels in all bathrooms were very thin.
I feel like for the money we paid for the cabin, we should have gotten better, cleaner bedrooms.

Relaxing Cabin in the Woods
The location of this cabin is terrific. Close enough to Custer to pick up whatever you need but far enough away to feel like you are really getting away from it all. It is very convenient to Custer State Park. The cabin was quiet & clean. Internet was reliable. Kitchen was well set up for cooking. Having a washer and dryer is a bonus. We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed the privacy and relaxation. Great spot to come back to after sight seeing or just hang out and relax. The covered porch was used daily for enjoying the forest and seeing the numerous deer visitors. We filled the bird feeders and enjoyed the antics of the chipmunks, squirrels and lots of birds. We would stay here again.

Perfect in everyway
Location, spacious, ammedities and comfortable so much so we wanted to stay forever. We arrived late for move in and our stash of food slim so it was nice to see that there were some starters things for us which was a blessing. The property is delightful private and cozy which added to our vacation. Plenty of room to spread out. Clean, lots of kitchen supplies, even laundry and bath supplies, lots of towels (thin and small though)(so if you want being your own but the dryer will take forever to dry them so keep that in mind). The satellite TV worked great as did the wifi. This location assisted in our ability to get around and see things without having to drive a long distance too or from our daily "go see it's". The Custer downtown quaint and had what we needed. Recommendations big thunder do their claiming gold mining 4 he tour, wild mustangs take that tour don't just show up the tour is more than worth it. Blue bell for dinner, Palmer gultch chuckwagon add their horseback riding the hour before. Cascade falls take your bathing suit. Mammoth cave don't miss it then eat at woolley's. Skip eating at laughing water, if you are driving skip the corn palace in Mitchell, do wildlife loop at dinner time you will be amazed at the buffalo, take the iron mountain South to north, grapes and grinds a must and bring your bikes we hauled 3 from Michigan and so glad we did. Our only warning would be to make it a point to show up while sun is still up the layout of the house is unique and works great hard though to see and figure out in the dark.

A mixed bag
I have stayed at cabins like this all over the country and found this one to be average at best. The location is ideal. We stayed there four days and had easy access to local attractions. The cabin was also clean and spacious with beautiful scenery (we saw deer every evening, many birds, etc). On the con side, I felt like this owner was just stingy. She could have invested so little to make things more comfortable. If visitors are coming from the East coast, they have a 12 hour travel day (this is by plane; longer of course, if people are driving) and it would be nice to just have some bottled water or something for guests when the arrive (this is typical of EVERY place I have stayed in the past). It would be nice to at least have coffee filters and coffee too, which is usually standard. There was ONE coffee filter in the cabin and no coffee (for four guests staying 4 days). Most places I've stayed even have coffee and tea. Again, this would cost the owner barely ANYTHING and make the stay so much nicer. The towels in the master suite were so shabby and threadbare that I needed 4 just to dry off after a shower (and I'm a skinny girl!). It looks like they had been bleached within every inch of their lives and were so small that if I held it up, it would not even reach my waist. The bed in the master suite is very uncomfortable and the shower would go from scalding hot to freezing cold about 15-20 times in the course of one shower. The first day I thought perhaps our friends were showering at the same time or using the washing machine, but they were not, as it happened the next day when I "scheduled" my shower. In addition, this woman has so many rules that we had to print them out, as we were afraid we would not get our deposit back (don't bother, as she has it plastered to the refrigerator). For some reason, we had to wash our own sheets on the day we left AND have a second load in the dryer. I'm not sure why, but I'd like her to have an early morning flight and have to get up at 4 in the morning to do LAUNDRY before she heads home. Ridiculous! We were paying a hefty cleaning bill and there was no cleaning while we were there, so why is this necessary? Perhaps she's had some bad guests but we found it OVERKILL and this left a very bad taste in our mouths.
