About this house rental
Go back to a simpler time for your Tucson visit with a stay in an authentic bunkhouse. This quaint vacation home has all the western charm of mid-century Tucson, but has been updated for the comfort of today’s modern traveler. Only recently made available for short-term guests, The Bunkhouse was home to real cowboys who worked the 75 acre ranch estate of playwright Clifford Goldsmith. Goldsmith’s work includes Broadway, Hollywood and television, but he is best known for “The Aldrich Family” radio show.
This unique and historic compound was built in 1947 by noted architect Arthur T. Brown and has been called home at one time or another by some interesting people. Other past residents include: Rudy Fick, the Kansas City auto dealer mentioned in the FBI’s 1950 memo regarding the alleged crash of flying saucers in New Mexico, Newspaper publisher Carl Winter, Oscar-winning actor Lee Marvin, and movie producer Larry G. Spangler.
Like other ranches in the historic Casas Adobes area, development gobbled up most of the surrounding land over the years and what remains today is a tranquil 8 acre knoll covered with natural desert vegetation and abundant wildlife. The entire property, which you are welcome to roam, consists of The Bunkhouse, a main house (occupied by a nonprofit foundation) and two other guest homes (see VRBO listings for The Tennis House at #767200 and The Ranch House at #4325448). The property entrance is off the main road, but all buildings are set back over 600-800 feet and hidden from view. It feels amazingly peaceful and secluded here, but in reality you’ll only be about a mile or so from major shopping, dining and travel destinations, such as Casas Adobes Plaza, the Foothills Mall, Tohono Chul Park and NW Medical Center.
Resort-style amenities on the grounds are exclusively for the use of our guests and include a tennis court, two pickleball courts, basketball, shuffleboard and a huge swimming pool (unheated) with views of the Catalina Mountains and city lights of the foothills and downtown Tucson. Sunset vistas over the Tucson Mountains are equally spectacular.
The Bunkhouse itself is a free-standing building of approx. 850 sq ft. with a/c, wi-fi, basic cable, full kitchen & bath, wood-beamed ceilings, tile floors, and generous closet, drawer & cupboard space. The bedroom has a king-size, gel-infused memory foam bed, TV, writing desk, and sitting area with a leather recliner. The living room has a leather sofa and chair, fireplace and armoire with TV and DVD player. The kitchen is equipped with a range, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, washer/dryer, and granite counters with seating for 4. The backyard is private and fenced with a covered patio (converted from the original horse stalls) with seating for 4 and a Weber grill (charcoal). There is also covered parking in an attached carport. Your stay in The Bunkhouse also includes: all linens & towels, dishes, cookware & utensils, cutlery, silverware & glassware, iron & ironing board, and a variety of books and DVDs for your use (many with local or western interest).
The Bunkhouse is ideal for short or long-term stays for two persons interested in Tucson's history and looking for a unique, high-quality travel accommodation. We love this place and think you will, too! So, come kick off your boots and stay awhile! Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

We had a delightful time in the bunkhouse. The property was immaculately clean upon check-in, and every amenity we could’ve asked for was provided. The location was perfect, and the pool, shuffleboard, and tennis/Pickleball courts were added attractions. We enjoyed our visit so much that we have already booked a month in 2025. Can’t wait to get back to see Jeanmarie and Kelly again!

Comfortable accommodation in convenient location
The photos of this property quite accurately depict the comfort and charm of the place. The Western decor is tasteful and interesting, the size of the space is more than adequate, and the kitchen is well-appointed. Communication with the highly responsive and friendly owner was very good. The only drawback for me was some ambient traffic noise, particularly later at night, much of which seemed to waft over from I-10, Others might be less sensitive to such an issue, particularly if you don't care to leave windows open at night for fresh air. All in all, I found my month-long stay quite satisfactory.

Relaxing and Peaceful Getaway
This was a relaxing stay in a nice property. Kelly and Jeanmarie are gracious hosts. The check in and out process was smooth and the communication was great. The Bunkhouse has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Plenty of Grocery Stores, Restaurants and Hiking Trails all within close vicinity.
Beautiful views of the Stars and Nature Life in this little tucked away Gem. Would certainly come back.

Love the Bunkhouse
The Bunkhouse was absolutely perfect for our stay in Tucson! So clean, so cozy, located near the hiking trails, and everything you need. Jeanmarie was the most responsive property owner we have ever met. We appreciated the yummy snacks that were ready for us after a long day of travel. The property is well maintained (my husband joked that he couldn't find anything to fix!) and the kitchen is equipped with everything you need for eating meals in. We loved the pool with the mountain views and refreshing water. Very private. The porch outside the Bunkhouse was absolutely relaxing and peaceful. We are definitely booking another stay there soon.

Great stay!
Had a great stay at the Bunkhouse and enjoyed the peaceful surrounding property. The Bunkhouse had everything we needed - a comfortable bed and all the little extras in the kitchen. We liked star-gazing on the front porch at night and a game of pickleball on the tennis court in the morning. The location is good -- close to stores, restaurants, as well as hiking and golf. We'll be back!

This place is so great - We want to go back and stay there again!
Everything about this property met our expectations and then some. It was SUPER clean, set up with everything we needed, comfortable King size bed, quiet and private. If/when we go back to Tucson it would be disappointing if we couldn't stay there. Jean and Kelly are great hosts and deserve all the positive compliments they receive. If you like to hike it's a great central location to so many great hiking spots. We had a wonderful time. Thanks again Jean and Kelly!

Bunkhouse stay
Our stay at the bunkhouse was perfect for the two of us. The house was well appointed, very clean and in the perfect location. Jeanmarie and Kelly are very knowledgeable about the area and gave us great suggestions for sights to see. The property is large and fun to explore. The cactus wrens were a bonus to watch in the morning while drinking coffee on the front patio. We'll definitely stay at this property again!

Loved the Bunkhouse!
We loved our stay at Casa Adobes! Imagine having breakfast on the front porch watching the birds and the coyotes passing through, then later taking a walk through the 8 acre desert property. This property was extremely clean, fully supplied and the owners responded quickly with the few requests we had.
The cowboy themed bunkhouse was extremely comfortable, including the king-sized bed and the rest of the furniture. It was fun seeing the pictures of Lee Marvin who resided at this property for a time, along with the pictures of the early years of the property.

Quiet, comfortable and close to everything
This is my second stay at Casas Adobes. This time I chose the Bunkhouse. It is perfect for 2 people. The kitchen is up to date and just large enough to actually cook a meal if desired. The living area is very comfortable but I loved the bedroom with its king size bed beamed ceiling and L shaped space. It is very roomy with a desk, bookcases, dresser and corner reading chair. It is a lovely sanctuary in the afternoons for reading or napping. The outdoor space has iron and tile topped table for dining and two lounge chairs. They are located in the former stables which are open to the back, shaded with dutch doors that open to let in the breezes. The front long porch has two chairs also great for reading or just watching the quail run back and forth.
JeanMarie and Kelly have made it a point to provide all the essentials for a stay in a home environment. Provided are all the laundry items cleaning essentials, paper towels, napkins, plenty of towels, hangers etc. They seem to take pride in setting up the guesthouses so you don't have to worry about anything and just enjoy your stay. Photos from the past of the former stable hands and the property add a nice personal touch.
Leave the property and you are within a mile or two of restaurants, grocery stores, hiking, movie theaters.
A visit to the Bunkhouse is highly recommended!

Perfect Vacation Bunkhouse...
We just stayed there for a month, and really enjoyed our stay there. The property, pool and tennis court were very well kept. We spent lots of our time there outdoors so the front porch and shady back patio were nice for relaxing.
The inside was extremely clean and kitchen was well stocked with cooking & cleaning supplies. Bed was comfy, and place was decorated nicely as photos show. Jeanmarie & Kelly were great hosts, super friendly, and were on site often if a question would arise. We will definitely stay there again if it is available next time we come to Tucson.

Top Notch With an Authentic Taste of Tucson
It pains me somewhat to write this review, because I feel like I am giving away a precious secret, but the Clifford Goldsmith Ranch is an extraordinary property. It is very well appointed and maintained, but the real attraction is its location. Its on a fairly long driveway that winds into a very private desert setting. In spite of it being surrounded by the conveniences of the city along Ina and Oracle Roads, it gives the impression that it is far away from town.
We stayed in the Bunkhouse which has a front porch for when you want to catch some sun, and a rear enclosed patio (formally a stable but nicely convened into a patio) for when you want shade - so there is always somewhere to sit and enjoy the desert view. And the wildlife - nothing dangerous - quail, prairie dogs, rabbits, roadrunners, etc... and coyotes. While sitting on the porch reading a book I had a coyote run past chasing a rabbit down the driveway in the middle of the morning oblivious to my presence. The owners have done a marvelous job in restoring the place without losing any of the authenticity and even possibly adding to it. Also, I would suggest that anyone considering the location check in to its history (too long to go into here). We fully intend to stay here again - if I haven't too badly blown the secret (so please don't come in January).

A tennis lover's desert oasis
The property is beautiful -- gorgeous cacti and a feeling of total privacy, even though it is close to shops and services. We are tennis players, and it was great having a quality private outdoor court just steps away from the bunkhouse. The bunkhouse itself is very comfortable, fully equipped, and nicely decorated. The private pool is a great bonus. We even enjoyed the DVDs of old cowboy television shows. Also learning about the interesting history of the property from one of the owners. If we ever return to the Tucson area, we will definitely want to stay here again.

A remarkable historic Tucson vacation spot!
A very private, modern, clean, and well maintained property with an interesting history.
We found the Bunkhouse to be a quaint modern place to stay - clean and well maintained. The five acre lot provides an oasis of peace and quiet in a relatively active area. The pool area is clean, spacious and a great place to hang out and relax. The tennis/pickle ball court is in fantastic shape. Although we did not have time to use it, it is a nice option to have.
Jeanmarie and Kelly are wonderful hosts who are friendly and personable folks. I commend them on researching the history of the property and their efforts of restoration and ongoing efforts to preserve the this rural-urban Tucson gem.
We certainly would love to return and if given the chance would recommend this property to anyone who may be considering a stay in the Tucson area.
Most of our stay was spent out of doors hiking in the endless hiking areas in and around Tucson. The downtown and University area is worth a day trip. I recommend using the Suntram as a way of traversing the downtown and University areas.

Western Bunk house Casa Adobe March 2016
I typically stay away from hotels and find houses or condo's to stay in because they are quieter, no children running up and down the hallways and just more privacy. I certainly enjoyed my stay here, the history adds to the charm and the owners are very knowledgeable on this property. The bunkhouse is exactly as the photos depicted, It was perfect for my husband and myself. It was clean and well appointed with the southwestern theme but not over done.
There were lots of extra touches , which I typically did not find in other rentals, ironing board, toothpaste, spare linens, laundry detergent, dish soap, popcorn, cocoa, bottle water in the fridge, tortilla chips and salsa. I would like to build a house just like this , the layout is perfect for us.
The property itself is beautiful sitting in the foothills of Tucson you would never know you were only blocks away from restaurants, shopping malls and the like.It was quiet and peaceful which is what we were looking for to unwind and regenerate which is what I did.
The pool was beautiful I only wish it was heated, even though I was told it wasn't heated I still didn't expect it to be as cold as it was and felt it was an amenity I really could not use in March. Perhaps the owners would consider heating it in the earlier months for us northerner's that come down to soak up the Arizona sunshine.
JeanMarie and Kelly were friendly, informative and helpful. I found them pleasant and delightful. I would recommend this property to those that want to regenerate but dont' want the spa experience or price. I would stay here again but perhaps later in the year when it's warmer so I can swim.
Thanks for a great experience your place is beautiful.

Charming, relaxing vaction spot for two
We thoroughly enjoyed our four week vacation in the bunkhouse. It exceeded our expectations with a large bedroom, relaxing living room, and kitchen with all new appliances and all the essentials for cooking if you desire to.
There were no down or feathers anywhere in the bunkhouse, for those who suffer from allergies to such, as one of us does.
We particularly enjoyed sitting on the front veranda for our breakfast - drinking coffee, eating and reading. For afternoons, two lounge chairs were provided on the back patio for quiet sunbathing or, by moving them in the shade, just to enjoy sitting outside.
The location is great. The property set back from a main road and is quiet and nicely landscaped. Many shopping and dining options are within five miles or less.
This was our third winter vacation in Tucson and we found we liked this Casa Adobes area best. Hats off to owners Jeanmarie and Kelly for making sure we had everything needed for a wonderful stay.

A wonderful stay!
My wife and I stayed here while visiting family in Tucson for the holiday. We had so much fun! First, you can see that it was a REAL bunkhouse at one time and there are photos in the living room to prove it. The house was very up-to-date but still felt "westerny" right down to the cowboy hats left for us at the front door. Everything was spotless and in perfect working order. We didn't use the tennis court because it was too hot, but we did spend lots of time in the pool and enjoyed that very much. It was really private and quiet and we felt like we had the place to ourselves for the whole week. The grounds are spacious and well-kept. If you are interested in desert flora and fauna, bring a camera because there's lots to see right outside the front door. (And if you want more, you can walk a block to the Tohono Chul Botanical Park and see more varieties of desert cacti than you will ever need to know exits. ) The kitchen was well-appointed. The bathroom is rather small, but cute and we had plenty of towels so it was not a problem at all. The bed was very comfortable and all the linens nice quality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and intend to come again in the future.
