About this house rental
Welcome to Koni Kai, Hawaiian translation: Passionate Sea. Koni Kai is a beautifully designed, very comfortable oceanfront home. Considerable time and effort has been spent to ensure Koni Kai is equipped with everything one might want/need while on vacation.
Koni Kai is perched on an ancient lava flow on the South Kona coast in Milolii, the oldest fishing village in Hawaii. If you are looking for nightlife (other than some of the best constellation viewing on the planet), then this is probably not the place for you. If, however, you are seeking a luxurious personal refuge that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation, then you have found your perfect vacation destination at Koni Kai. Located 30 miles south of Kailua-Kona and just an hour’s drive from Volcano National Park, Koni Kai provides the perfect home base to lounge all day on the 1000 square foot sundeck, explore nearby black and green sand beaches, experience the dramatically different eco-systems in the rainforests near Hilo, or hike the volcano to search for petroglyphs and watch active red lava flow into the ocean. Regardless of how you choose to spend your days, you will be welcomed back to Koni Kai with some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, the perfect backdrop for the dramatically rugged landscape.
In the winter months (approximately November thru March), you will be able to sit on the sundeck and watch Humpback whales migrate, spinner dolphins perform and the occasional green sea turtle swim up to say hello. Some of the best snorkeling, diving and fishing can be found directly in front of the house due to a coral reef that spans the north side of the bay.
While we would hope the majority of your vacation is spent “un-plugged” from the chaos of the rest of the world, we understand there will be occasions when you need to check-in, so complimentary Wi-Fi internet and high-definition satellite television are provided. A brand-new, state of the art water filtration system, to include UV light, has been installed. The kitchen includes a Wolf gas range, Kenmore oven and microwave, Bosch dishwasher and every small appliance we could think of. There is also a laundry area with a brand new Whirlpool Duet hi-efficiency washer and dryer.
Koni Kai welcomes you with much Aloha, now and for all your future Hawaii visits. Please contact us with any questions you may have – we look forward to making your stay as pleasant and memorable as possible.

Loved this property. The amazing views from every room of the home were amazing. Nice and secluded - just like I wanted. Had a rental car so we were still able to tour so many beautiful sights on the island.

You cannot get better views than you can with this house. As mentioned in the description, yes, it’s out of town and the drive off the main road might be awkward the first time you go down it. But once down at the house, you’ll forget all about that. If you want to just unwind, disconnect and enjoy the gorgeous blue ocean, book now.
Sarah and her team are amazing and respond in a very timely manner, if needed. They all take great pride in the property

This beach house is in a great location. The house is clean, great kitchen, 2 bathrooms with amenities. The beds and pillows are very comfortable.
AMAZING VIEWS. Our last 2 days we watched whales.
The night sky offered plenty of stars. Beach front property. We cannot wait to return.

We especially enjoyed the spectacular surf, whale sightings, and big deck overlooking the lava rocks. The rooms are large and inviting. There were a lot of little touches we appreciated—snorkel gear, coolers, beach towels, sharp kitchen knives, a good supply of basic condiments. The surf was particularly high during our stay so we couldn’t swim near the house, but we appreciated the tips about other recommended spots.

We had a lovely time, unbelievable view and location! Spotted whales and dolphins our last day from the deck! Thank you!

Drive to house from Rte. 11 is an adventure, should be explained. Sliding doors to Master Bedroom screech loudly, need silicone, dining room chair (moved to corner) has a wobbly seat, needs tightening.
Overall, extremely enjoyable stay.

This is the second time my sister and I stayed at this property. It is very peaceful at this location and if we were any closer to the ocean we would be in it. The home is clean with excellent kitchen and bathroom amenities. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. I highly recommend the property and will always stay here when visiting the big island!

We couldn't have found a more perfect place to stay. From snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, to watching the sunset over the Pacific, this house is a must see. We traveled here all the way from Florida and we are already planning a return trip.

Beach front property spectacular views. Far from city life. Make sure you stop at the store before checking in.
Friendly and quiet neighbors.
1 hour from Kona airport and approx 1 1/2 hours from volcano park.

This is a great hide away with some excellent snorkeling for one or two couples looking for quiet rest and relaxation. Close proximity to Volcano National Park. Not ideal for small kids.

The house is an architectural masterpiece, brilliant Polynesian design for air movement. We couldn't stop daydreaming about building our own someday. The beds are extremely comfortable (we are tempur pedic ppl, this was so soft and never a sore back). We loved jumping off next door launch for snorkeling, and I would 100% take-up spear fishing there if I lived close. We grilled every night and enjoyed sunsets and rainbows. Hawaii island west side is an extreme climate, everything is based on elevation. It gets very hot and arid by the water, but drive up five minutes and you can be in cloud forests. We were happy to arrange our days by leaving to explore between 11am and 3pm pretty much everyday which avoided the heat.
Husband and I travel frequently to Big Island. Milolii is a unique location, quite isolated and anyone from Kona will say "woa dats way down there!". It's a perfect launching point for adventures of the southern half of the island, which we had never dedicated time to before. Recommendations include Hookena beach (definitely stop at the Ranch store just south to buy fresh butchered steaks for a deal, tell Staci the firefighter and PA sent you), Makalawena Beach hike, Google 'Bay Side Adventures' for kayaks to Captain Cook monument snorkeling, 2 Step on weekdays, makuala ooma trail. The south hoghway 11 drive towards Volcano will leave you thinking you're in Ireland. For some R&R, in kona check out Hawaii Sanctuary Spa with Saima. Cute shopping in Captain Cook during monthly artwalk. Don't drive by the Coffee Shack without stopping for a meal and lillikoi cheese cake :)
To save money and eat like a local, base your trips on where the big Farmer's Markets are on certain days. 6 papaya for 2 dollars, talk about morning smoothies! We also like to keep a list of nearby Transfer Station opening days to drop trash/ recyclables on our way north or south.
We loved our 2 weeks at Kona Kai house, and will never forget it.

We spent three days at this oceanfront home. We loved the solitude, the ocean, the dolphins. The deck was perfect for hanging out all day while we were there in early April. As mentioned in other reviews and in the listing, this place is way off the beaten track. We felt like it might have been nice to have some basic cooking items available, like oil, soy sauce, sugar, a few basic seasonings. It's definitely the kind of place that you want to have provisions so you don't have to go out for meals with the closest restaurant being a good 45 minutes away. The stove was great and we really appreciated the counter-top oven since the main oven wasn't working. A tea kettle would be great addition to the kitchen supplies. That being said, if you want the solitude and only the sound of the ocean waves, this is the place for you!

Very nice place. Well maintained. I love just listening to the ocean every night and gazing at all the stars.
It is a rather harrowing drive down the mountain road so once here, we weren’t inclined to go anywhere. Luckily we went to the grocery store first and brought all the food we needed.

This property is on a gorgeous spot in a quiet, tranquil neighborhood! From the beautiful rainbows in the morning to the stunning stars at night, you can enjoy the beauty of the island without the crowds even on spring break! And the snorkeling was out of this world just steps away!

We loved this very open concept house right on the water. The view looking over the ocean is amazing. The neighborhood/village of miliolii is very rugged and rough, in every sense of the word. Overall, it was a good base camp for us for the first part of our trip as we explored the South half of the island and volcano national park. Would stay here again

My husband and I really enjoyed this property… the deck was HUGE and that paired with the perfect weather meant we spent a lot of time out there enjoying meals, sunbathing, and cocktails. They also had a great speaker which allowed us to enjoy music both inside and outside. The view from the main living spaces, bedroom, and even the bathroom were incredible!
The drive down to the house is steep and windy, but can be done with any vehicle. As noted in other reviews, grocery stores and restaurants are a 20-45 minute drive so stock up before you get there. Finally, bring mosquito spray— we’ve been several places in Hawaii and never had an issue, but on the north side of the deck they were pesky!

The house is in a spectacular location. It's built at the end of the road on a lava flow at the water's edge. The views over the ocean are endless. The surf crashing against shore is a constant reminder of where you are. This might be an issue for some, but not for us. If you close the windows to help with the sound, the house rapidly becomes too warm as there is no a/c. With the breeze blowing through, the house was always comfortable. We didn't think the wicker furniture in the living room was very comfortable, but it was functional. The very large screen tv was nice, though there were big problems with the internet service while we were there. They were still working to truly resolve them when we left. We ended up using the hotspot on my phone for internet service to my laptop. There was always enough LTE service for that and for our phones to function.
The kitchen was well appointed. The oven was not working, but the range, m/w and a large toaster oven were. plenty for our needs. The master suite is raised above the living room by a couple of steps. It's a little different with king size bed in the middle of its floor, but is quite comfortable. The shower has a glass wall for a great ocean view while you perform your ablutions! The second bedroom and bath are also very nice.
Quick notes: Manager Suzi was very helpful. The road down is narrow and steep, but no big deal. Half hour drive to nearest services. We loved this place and would stay here again for sure!

Make sure you have what you need prior to getting to the house along with driving to the location in the daylight as it’s hard to find the house at night even with the directions.

We love staying at this home. It is absolutely beautiful in all weather. When it’s calm the snorkeling is superb, when it it’s raining and stormy, the waves are beautiful to watch. This was our 2nd time here and we plan to come again next year. Suzi responded promptly to a minor malfunction and had it fixed in minutes. Great area for those who want to relax and enjoy being away from the crowds. One of our favorites for sure in all of Hawaii.

As others noted this home is perfect if you want to chill and relax. Owners were very responsive. Listening to the waves crash against the rocks never got old.. if I could give 1 improvement it would be to have an extra floor fan or 2.. there is only 1 so we had to move it as needed

My wife and I won’t forget this vacation. Beautiful home and location. The view and sounds of the ocean, clouds, rainbows and night sky was so relaxing and mesmerizing. We had some of our best nights sleeping ever with the calming sea sounds and fresh air.
Everything you need, except for food and drink, for your stay is there including bottled water to drink and ocean sports gear too.
The only thing we would have liked was some AC to keep the heat and humidity comfortable as it was uncomfortable during the day after coming back from our day excursions even with the windows open and fans on. Being as it is sitting on a black volcanic lava rock field there is no way to escape the heat until after dark.

My husband and I stayed here for about a week and a half for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it! The house was beautiful! The view was beautiful! It was paradise on earth! The water is a little choppy by the rocks but if you just kinda jump in, it’s pretty easy to maneuver. The snorkeling was fantastic! We saw so many beautiful fish! We never wanted to leave the house, it was so beautiful.

Peaceful, relaxing, & great house
This place is in a safe area. We never felt we needed to lock up at night. So we could leave the windows and doors open for the cool breeze at night to sleep. The two times we left for all day we locked it up tight so the house was warm by the time we got back. But it cooled right down easily. We had a true relaxing vacation. We enjoyed just staying at the house several days!
The one thing we stressed about a little was the trash disposal. We never found where to take it. But the owner said to leave it bagged on the front porch and to not worry about it at all. So that eased our minds and was very nice that we could do that. This place is off the beaten path an out of the center of tourist town! All in all…. This place is just how they advertised it! And just what we wanted! Thank you for a great house! As others wrote… mosquitoes are a bit of an issue. We both came home with multiple bites. BRING REPELLENT! You will need it!even with that it was still great!

Beautiful home
The home was lovely. We knew there was not AC in booking, but it was definitely warmer than ideal. Additional fans could be helpful. Great location directly on the water. Thank you for a fun stay!

Beautiful off the beaten path
This home LITERALLY sits on the edge of a lava flow and the ocean. It is about an hour south of the airport which nicely puts you in the center to visit the northern shore and the southern shore/Volcanos National Park. It is a great place to relax. Beautiful deck to eat or have drinks. Beautiful sunsets. Get groceries before you check-in. We didn't snorkel here as we thought it was a bit rough but they have gear at the house if you need it. Suitable for a family of 4 or two couples. The road from 11 is STEEP but accessible with any vehicle. Super clean and has everything you need including washer/dryer. Definitely would recommend if you are looking for something other than an urban setting.

Stunning view, quiet neighborhood
We loved this house with a breathtaking view of the coast from the huge and comfortable patio. The house is well stocked with toys and supplies, the living area is large and comfortable and the master shower has an equally stunning view! Suzi was super helpful with ideas and information. The house is in a quiet neighborhood not very close to resorts and restaurants - which we loved! It is wonderful to have the peace and tranquility of the area. But plenty of interesting places to visit that are pretty close. A part of Hawaii many people don't see. We would love to come back again! Aloha.

Paradise by the Sea
Koni Kai certainly lived up to its name! My wife and I enjoy finding off-the-beaten-path rentals. This was a great find! You have read about the four-mile drive down to get to this place. Twists and turns and you feel like you are never going to get there. But, well worth it when you do. Tip: Drive slow, stop and buy fresh papaya or avocado at one of the farm stands. Pictures on VRBO website do justice to the beauty and views you will enjoy! Another home is built right next to this rental, but with blinds and the way the house is configured you have privacy on deck and in the home. The shower in the main bath allows for an almost full view of the ocean! You are right on the water and get to hear the crashing waves lull you to sleep each night. You drive a lot to get to amenities(food, restaurants, gas) and activities. But, you chose this place for its peacefulness and serenity. Koni Kai was a hard one to have to say goodbye to! Mahalo Sarah!

Spectacular view!
We loved the house and our stay here. Confident snorkelers can go out at the lava ledge with steps and ladder nearby. Clear water but it can be turbulent so wait for a calm day. This house was better than the photos. The back deck- oh it’s fabulous! We loved our stay here. Clean and well equipped and everything functioned perfectly. Netflix included on TV, beach chairs and SUP and boogie board. We would definitely come again. Everything we needed.

Could be great, needs better cleaning & TLC, Great location
Very nice, great deck & view. We were disappointed in some things. Raw bacon in sink drain, coffee grounds still in coffee mKer, some of the blinds need to be replaced, screens didn't stay in place allowing green geckos in. The place needs some TLC (tender loving care).

Fabulous Place to Get Away from it All!
This is a wonderful property if you are seeking a mix of seclusion and privacy with activities. The view from the back porch is amazing. The location is fairly remote to many activities on the island, but everything is still within reasonable reach. Kona, South Point and Volcanoes National Park are each an hour away. Hilo is 2 hours. the drives are stunning.. Our 25 and 23 yr old adult kids would have preferred a more active area, but still loved the home and the views, so running into Kialua was a decent option. There is no A/C and house was pretty warm when we arrived, but leave the windows open and use the ample fans and you will be very comfortable, even a bit chilly by morning...perfect for me! Would definitely stay here again!!!

Best honeymoon spot!
What an amazing start to our Honeymoon vacation on the beautiful Big Island!
To say the least, Kona Kai was a breathtaking amazing experience! You cannot beat the beautiful ocean views on your private deck with turquoise water splashing the lava rocks! The sunsets are spectacular on the back deck and enjoying my coffee in the morning by the water was the best!
The house was so clean, there was even Hawaiian music playing when we arrived! An open concept that was so inviting with big sliding doors allowing the ocean breeze through!
The ONLY downfall was that it was an hour’s drive to Kona with lots of winding roads that leads to a secluded neighborhood right on the coast. It’s definitely worth the drive!
I would love to come back again!
