Are you looking for a comfortable vacation home that has a luxurious, exotic feel? Do you enjoy watching the surf, being awestruck by colourful sunsets and gazing at billions of stars? Then welcome to Casa Colina.
Located only a short 5 minute walk to shops, restaurants and bars, our home features an open air living environment with a floorplan that flows onto the front veranda through 4 gorgeous custom built wooden glass doors that do not obstruct the views of San Juan del Sur Bay, the quaint town and surrounding jungle. Casa Colina was designed and built to North American earthquake standards by renowned architect Chris Robertson (Pier 39 San Francisco and Finca Las Nubes) on a ridge in the gated, boutique community of Paradise Bay. Our property features a large stone terrace that is an excellent space for yoga. Our guests can enjoy daily visits from exotic birds like white throated magpie jays, motmots, kiskadees, baltimore orioles, doves, hummingbirds and the occasional appearance of wild budgies. It's not uncommon to see Howler Monkeys in the trees surrounding the pool.
Casa Colina is more than a rental home, it is also our second home as we do spend several months a year enjoying the sights, sounds and our friends of San Juan del Sur. As a result, we take great pride in maintaining our home to the highest standards. Our guests comment that it does feel and look like a home, not a hostel or cold rental space like many other casas in the area. We would be delighted to share our incredible home away from home with you in our absence.
Our home is quite private, and while the 4 m x 8 m (12 ft x 24 ft) infinity pool, arguably one of the best in San Juan del Sur, is considered shared, it is only shared with the adjacent twin house and rarely would you find yourself sharing it with others. Because of the terracing, and the other house being below ours, anyone staying there cannot see into any of our spaces and vice versa. The pool is located behind the other house, but adjacent to ours. Anyone staying in the other house cannot see the pool, but there is a great view of the pool from our master bedroom and front veranda.
The bathroom in the master bedroom is only accessible through the bedroom, making it a very private space. The main bathroom is ensuite to the second bedroom but also accessible from the main living area through a separate doorway. Both bedrooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans while the loft bedroom has two wall fans directed at the sleeping area. Due to the constant gentle breeze, air conditioning in the main part of the house is not necessary.
Keywords: 2 bedrooms with king size beds, private loft with two twin beds, 3 twin sofa beds, oceanview, infinity pool overlooks ocean & town, covered veranda with rocking chairs and hammocks, separate large terrace and gas bbq.

Beautifully maintained. Only suggestion would be railings to n walkways, very steep and changing cookware as the teflon is peeling. Katarina, the caregiver is very pleasant and attentive.

We stayed for a month ‘workation’. THE HOUSE: well laid out, nice and open, loved the balcony that runs its entire length. The AC in the bedrooms worked great, the main part of the house does not have AC but has fans and there is always a breeze being at the top of a hill. Kitchen was well outfitted, lots of appliances, dishes and cutlery. Had a great BBQ. We worked remotely and the internet was great – we asked the host to increase the bandwidth speed to be sure for $90. Worth it. THE PROPERTY: The pool and its view is outstanding. The monkeys visit the trees around it. There are chairs and a hammock, the chairs are pretty uncomfortable. Would be nice to have more comfortable chairs or a loungers so you could hang out. The pool is shared with the house below but no one was ever at the pool when we went. They have done a really nice job with the grounds, lots of plants and bougainvillea, feels quite private. The house is called Casa Colina for a reason. The hill is steep, you are breathing heavy/have a good sweat on by the time you get to the house. We are in our late 40s and in good shape so we didn’t mind it. THE LOCATION: You can walk into the heart of SJDS in less than 10 mins. Lots of shops, restaurants and bars, car rentals, markets. This is a town where locals live, so you walk through a neighbourhood on the way in. It's rustic and gritty, but we never felt unsafe and people were friendly. Loved all the dogs, cats, and chickens cruising around.

My family of 5 including 3 children stayed at the house in February for 5 nights. The view of the house and pool was amazing, and the house was extremely clean and well furnished. The entire family loved sitting in the porch hammocks and admiring the view and breeze, day and night. The highlight of the stay was our property manager and cook Katalina who has overseen the house since it was built. She made two incredible meals of fish, chicken, and shrimp with fresh vegetables and potatoes that my wife and kids all enjoyed. She even made homemade french fries for the kids. Katalina assisted us with laundry, cleaning, and even helped us with our return transport. An amazing, friendly lady who provided a home stay unlike any other that we've ever done. The hillside view comes with a steep walk from downtown SJDS, but taxis are readily available and very affordable.

Amazing stay in town. Perfect location for walking into town (steep hill coming back though). Katalina was awesome and I highly recommend having her cook for you as the food was amazing and plenty of leftovers.

My group and I love love loved staying here. The house is so beautiful. The deck with all the rocking chairs was our go to spot in the evening to chill and watch the lightning.
The nook up the ladder was so perfect for rainy movie nights.
The grounds were perfectly kept and the pool was the absolute best. It overlooks the bay of San Juan. Best pool views hands down!
Katalina is the Nica mom everyone wants and needs. She kept the house clean and cooked up some amazing dinners for us. Highly recommend booking her cooking services while you’re here!
We would most certainly stay here again.

great location, very near town as well as experience the wonders of a jungle setting. gorgeous views, rustic, but comfortable with everything you would need to enoy your stay. It is open to the elements, with the best outdoors, so make sure you are ok with the occaisional encounter with the local wildlife.

Everything about this rental was perfect, from the airport pick up to the departure today! I wouldnt change anything. Towe was extremely quick to respond to my messages, and we had zero issues with the house. The housekeeper, Katalina, is a joy to have around and an incredible cook- be sure to book her for a couple dinners. The pool is great, beds are comfortable, filtered water is included, house is secure (alarm system with security guard), wifi is reliable, location is convenient, and the view is wonderful. Would definitely stay again!A tip for future renters- the walk back to the house is a little bit strenuous for the last few minutes, as the house sits on a steep hill. With that being said, we were a group of 20-somethings and had no problem with multiple trips per day. A car was not necessary.

Best house in SJDS
Casa Colina is beautiful and well maintained-- has all the comforts from home. 7 of us adults fit comfortably, the loft space was a bit hot so the guys ended up sleeping in the living room which gets a nice breeze at night. The view is breath taking at all times of the day, but is especially cool at night when the town is lit up. As expected in Nica- the electricity did go out twice during our week stay, but that is no reflection on the home itself. even though the pool is quite small, it was such a luxury to have one after walking up the hill to get home. We all got massages at the house, which was incredible! Highly recommend doing that! Catalina is the best ever. Can't say enough good things about her! She is so helpful and brought us a ton of laughs and fun times. Another positive- There is a security guard station before reaching the casa and a guard outside the property at night, so we all felt extremely safe. I highly reccomend staying at casa Colina if your considering staying in SJDS.

Casa Colina Extraordinaire
My sister and I stayed here in San Juan Del Sur for one month. Although, it it was the rainy season, it did not have any affect on our trip. This property is by far, the best property in all of SJDS. We spent many days walking and exploring the town and saw nothing as nice as this. The views are phenomenal, a private pool (which you will be very happy you have), and the lovely Catalina. She will cook for you, shop for you, clean for you and is wonderful. There is a lot of construction going on in this area in the way of new homes, so a tad bit of traffic and workers, however, very tolerable. The walk up the hill to the property is not for the weary. Doable, but by no means easy. We had a slight refrigerator problem, as our food was all freezing, but that was remedied quickly by the owner with a new refrigerator. Karen could not have been more helpful and concerned with any of our issues. I hate to give this property such a great revue, as I don't want you all to be there when I want to come back, but it is The Best in all of San Juan Del Sur and I did extensive research. You will not be disappointed if you choose this property for your visit.

Great home for families!
Our group consisted of 2 families with 4 children ages 1-5. This home was a perfect place to stay. We were able to walk to town every day (though we often took a cab back UP the hill), and we were within close proximity of nice beaches. Having a home base with a kitchen, air-conditioned rooms, and the pool made traveling with young children fun and *somewhat* easy. Katalina, as mentioned by many, is a wonderful cook and we all adored her. We also highly recommend finding the blue jeep beach taxi (driven by Martin) to visit some of the beautiful surfing beaches. Great home in a great town.

You won't be disappointed
The Casa Colina was wonderful. This was a girls getaway. The house has everything you need, is spotlessly clean, King size beds are very comfortable, and you should definitely have Katalina cook for you, we had 3 meals prepared and she was top notch! I run several restaurants and can tell you that she is on par with my chefs! You will have left overs as well! We had Beef Tenderloin, lobster, mahi mahi and chicken.
The hill is very steep, but you can take a cab if its too much for you to walk up, about 150 cords. We walked down, and took a cabs home. The wifi didn't work, I think they need a new box, they checked it out, but couldn't get it up and going. If you bring a laptop you can hardware in. If you use an Ipad or tablet, a walk into town for you. All the restaurants and cafe's in town have wifi so its not a deal breaker by any means.
Harry the property manager arranged rides for us to different beaches, Hermosa and Maderas and we swam and watched some surfing. We had the best fish taco's ever at Maderas beach. Both beaches have a restaurant and bar. Lots to do, we chose to hang out, sample the local restaurants, make daqairies in house and swing on the hammocks at night. The price is right for this location, the food in town is very good. Service is exceptional.
I felt safe, we even slept with the doors to the bedrooms wide open. You will need to adjust to the barking dogs, and Egg Horn Foghorn Roosters, but that was only the first night it woke me up, and because it was our choice to sleep with doors open.
I have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone.

Unbelievable luxury and view
One amazing, high end casa! The home was beautifully and comfortably furnished and was so close to town....you felt like you had no neighbours,as your view was so uninterrupted. Katalina came to cook a wonderful pineapple pork with local vegetables and the best mashed potatoes ever tasted! She is lovely!
We loved the pool, the home and will definitely recommend it to friends! A great home to explore the west coast...wish we had longer

casa tranquilla
Very nice home. Beautiful views. good location. Housekeeper, Katalina was very helpful. Tho she speaks very little english, we had several in our group who spoke fluent spanish so this was not a problem. The house is set high up on a very steep hill, hense the amazing views, therefore anyone with physical limitations may have difficulties. I highly recommend having Katalina cook dinner, at about 10$ per person it was a real treat.

Great spot
Very nice villa. We thought it was nicer than the pictures . The road is steep and requires a double back further up the hillside to access the small driveway. Might be a challenge for some. Property manager and Katrina very pleasant to deal with and handled one issue promptly.

An amazing place!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Casa Tranquila. It is a muy tranquil place:) Katalina, the housekeeper, is a superb cook. She cooked two wonderful dinners for us. The house fits the description perfectly. The location was great and it was extremely neat and clean. We enjoyed the pool even on days that we went to the beach. San Juan del Sur is a great place to decompress and relax. We definitely will be back for another visit!

Home base with a view for adventure
I am a single father with 2 children 13 and 15 years old. We came to SJDS to experience a new culture, relax and learn to surf. The visit exceeded our expectations.
Positives: The house is just as it appears in the pictures. Everything worked in the house. The pool was a wonderful spot to be on a hot summer afternoon. The view of the town and beach is fabulous. There are a number of beautiful birds that visit the surrounding trees. We rarely saw or heard our neighbors below. We did not use the TV but it did work! The wifi worked. The house was cool in the evenings without need for the airconditioning. Excellent cell phone coverage. The walk into town was short and felt very safe even at night. The traffic was minimal and the roads finer than most "developed" countries including the US. I would have been comfortable driving had I known in advance. The housekeeper is a gem and she prepared a fabulous dinner. Dario from San Juan Surf & Sport was extremely helpful and we loved our fishing trip with his company. The food in town was delicious and inexpensive. The surfing lessons were great and the beaches were empty; perfect learning conditions. Street vendors were surprisingly friendly and not pushy. The stores in the market likewise and there was a nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. We did not drink the tap water but none of us suffered any stomach issues from brushing our teeth or eating out! My daughter loved the Zen yoga studio.
Need to Know but not negatives: We were aware there would be a hike to get home up the hill and it was! Most taxis could not get past the bottom of the hill (there is a small unpaved area damaged by the rain) but we welcomed the excersise! We had several power outages during our weeklong stay, but none so long that it caused any real issues. There was a lot of traffic up the road one night but most nights it was quiet. Selection in the grocery stores was very limited. There are some noisy nocturnal lizards that take some getting used to.
Beautiful home in a beautiful little town with uncrowded beaches, great fishing and lots to explore.

Great House with Perfect Location
Casa Tranquila lived up to all the 5-star reviews we saw before booking this house. The location is perfect; close enough to town to walk anywhere in San Juan del Sur, yet in a private area on the hillside that feels safe and doesn’t have people walking by the house. The house has A/C in both bedrooms which was nice for this time of year (July), and it’s located high enough on a hill overlooking the bay and town that a nice breeze cools down the house. The infinity pool and views of the bay are amazing. You don’t need a car at this location. Owner, property manager, housekeeper, and neighborhood security are all helpful and easy to deal with. I would recommend this house to anyone wanting to visit San Juan del Sur. Very reasonably priced for what you get.

Great house, Amazing Pool
The pictures on the website accurately displayed the look of the house and pool - it was quite clean, but we had to purchase some necessities, eg coffee filters and toilet paper (we also purchased drinking water, but we expected this). There was no propane for the BBQ, but opted to use the stove in the kitchen instead. We enjoyed the location of the house as we did not rent a car and were able to walk everywhere, including at night - we never once felt un-safe. The house is also quite private, and the security hut is directly below the house. Some of the beach restaurants were quite good and we spent quite a lot of time on the beach due to the very hot weather during our stay. The yoga class at Zen Yoga was great and we also did the sunset cruise on our last night which was lots of fun. The owner was very available for questions before our trip, which was great. If I knew someone who was going to Nicaragua, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house, just not at this time of year as it was much too hot and humid, although the air conditioning in the bedroom and pool were lifesavers.

Beautiful
Very nice, clean and tastefully decorated beach house perched on a hill with a beautiful view of the San Juan del Sur bay. I like this house because of its proximity to downtown San Juan (you can walk) where you can dine or shop or you can also choose to stay home and sit by the pool. The owners offer the services of a cook for the day and her fees are incredibly low.
The only problem is that this home is not handicap accessible.

Family Vacation
We had a really awesome time at Casa Tranquila. The house has everything you need and is tucked away in just the perfect spot. We traveled in January and the weather was great. The house sits up high on a hill and we got a great breeze throughout the house. We shopped at the Pali and we bought seafood at the local market. We had some great dinners and got to relax and enjoy the town. You definitely do not need a car but it is a good walk up the house. We had our 3yr old with us and the walk definitely tuckered him out. The only negative for us or more me was that the veranda wasn't very secure for a little one. But that depends of course on your kid, ours is pretty rambunctious so a little stressful for me but everyone survived.
Katalina is pretty awesome, anything you need she can arrange for you. My husband wanted to go fishing and she setup that morning.
Barrio Cafe is really good for breakfast and Katalina recommended Vivienne's for dinner and it was good and well priced.
I definitely recommend Casa Tranquila, it was clean, quiet & met all our needs. Can't wait to stay here again.

Tropical Heaven
Great place for a vacation. Wonderful view of the bay from the veranda up on the hill. Pool is a great addition.
You have to see the night view to really appreciate the area. Very lush vegetation, (we went after the rainy season)

Perfect San Juan Del Sur Home Rental
We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Tranquilla. It was the perfect setting up on the hill just a short walk from town. Everything in the house was very westernized and the AC was very nice to have at night. The pool is set in the most amazing spot also and it's truly a tranquil spot to spend a holiday. We would highly recommend choosing this place to stay and in the future we will be considering this place highly again if we come to SJDS.

Perfect end to our trip... amazing pool and views!
Our group of 4 (2 couples around 30 years old) stayed at Casa Tranquila at the start of January and absolutely loved it. We never were able to connect with Harry while we were there, but Catalina was around quite a bit and was one of the sweetest people we'd ever met. My friend and I were walking back from town one day and she happened to be going up to the property in a cab and offered us a ride which was very thoughtful.
Beds very comfortable, A/C in the rooms wonderful, always had hot water showers which was a bonus, lots of channels on the TV (not that we used it much!), wifi worked perfectly throughout our stay... pool fantastic (especially after hiking up the hill to the house and being able to cool off instantly!) It's an easy walk into town, I'd say under 5 minutes for sure. Coming back is pretty steep for the last part but anyone in ok shape would have no problem. We took a cab back once and it was only 100 Cordobas so that would have been a great option too, and lots of cabs easy to find.
Being up in the hills, we did come across a few creepy crawlies, but as everyone should know - if seeing some bugs is going to ruin your holiday, stay home or at least don't complain about it (and I hate bugs as much as anyone!) Lucky for us, our boyfriends didn't seem to mind taking them outside for us so problem solved!
We had spent the first week in the Corn Islands (LOVED), but also really enjoyed San Juan del Sur and the huge assortment of restaurants/bars to choose from, and also having a full kitchen to pick up our own food and drinks to just relax and enjoy the house. Perfect end to our holiday, would absolutely recommend! Oh and if you have a large group travelling together, there is an identical house below which shares the infinity pool.
