About this cottage rental
HISTORIC ISLAND COTTAGE
Built in 1918, The Gills is an original summer cottage perched above the sea at the very end of Bailey Island. Secluded far from the road, nestled in a grove of pine and spruce, the house is pure tranquility. Each beautifully appointed room is both comfortable and authentic.
Enjoy naps on the porch swing or walk to nearby beaches, restaurants and shops. Explore tide pools along the rocky coastline. Go sailing or kayaking. Fish for striped bass from the rocks, just steps from the porch. Enjoy fresh lobster pulled from the ocean that morning by one of the local lobstermen.
Whatever you choose to do, it all comes back to the view. Clear and calm one day, misty and grey the next. Sit back and watch the sea and sky change with the weather. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Always beautiful. Always different.
The Gills will give you the opportunity to slow down, and remember how good it feels to do nothing at all, surrounded by friends and family.
THE GILLS sleeps 6 - with two queen beds and two twin beds.

THE OWNER
My name is Carter Smith and I am the owner of THE GILLS GROUP (The Red House #1063510, Jaquish Lane #733483 and The Gills). I was born on Bailey Island and after traveling the world I know that this little island is special. As both a photographer and filmmaker, I travel quite a bit and I've furnished the houses with things I've collected from around the world (and around Maine). These are not just "rental properties"to me . These are houses I've designed and furnished with love and attention to detail - places where I spend time with family and friends whenever I get the chance. Places that I love sharing.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This cottage is perfect if you're seeking an authentic Maine experience and love historic homes - BUT - The Gills is over 100 years old and has all of the quirks of an old home. There are changes in the level of the floor at several of the thresholds between rooms. The original horsehair plaster in the upstairs bedrooms and hallway is intact - and imperfect in places. The original canvas floor runner on the stairs is still in place - and shows it's age with the wear of the many people who have enjoyed this magical cottage. As the owner - and lover of historic homes - I have chosen to keep these original details intact. If you are expecting something glossy and perfect and new - then The Gills is probably not the cottage for you. If you love the authentic charm of a truly historic home - the quirks and odd details that can't fully be shown in a photograph - then you just may fall in love. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact our property manager David Johnson - [email protected]

Dating from 1918, vacationing in this cottage was a quiet visual delight. The view from the front porch, overlooking the evergreen trees and blueberry bushes, out to the ever-changing ocean will stay in my mind throughout the year.
The house itself is much the way it has always been, simple, rustic and quiet; off the beaten path, a retreat with few conveniences, a great place to look and contemplate, to read and draw.
For us, it was perfect.

The location and view were wonderful! The home
Itself is deteriorating. The rot on the columns holding up the porch was concerning, There was standing water outside the back porch. It needs work.

Disappointment is an understatement.
The location of the house was as expected but the disrepair of the structure was not ...nor was the depressing decor. We left early.
I will not trust VRBO again until they certify a property to a decent standard.

This is the perfect spot to just relax, forget about time and what day it is. Just sit and watch the water, fish off the rocky coast, play games and eat lobster.
The house is magical, a quirky old cottage with fantastic aesthetic feel.
We enjoyed every moment and will consider a return.

Oh my, where to start?? This is THE Maine house to stay at when you want peaceful, hidden and right off the cliff side of the ocean. The fireplace was so enjoyable for us coming from Texas and being on the colder side during a small storm haha. Carter the owner gave us such good recommendations on everything! The beds were very comfortable, we had all of the cooking utensils we needed and the wifi was strong throughout the house. I will admit I tried to buy the house from him but he politely declined. The history of the house is neat too and you can tell the years of love it had! We will be back!!!

The perfect escape; private, the sound of the ocean crashing on the rocks, my wife and our dog Gus. The 4 days we just spent here were rejuvenating. Thank you for making it so seamless Dave. We will be back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Gills. Dave, the property manager was very responsive and gave us great tips on kayak rental and where to put in. He was incredibly quick to reply with any questions we had and was very welcoming. The properly was clean and well maintained for an old home. The location can’t be beat and I could live on the porch overlooking the ocean- so comfortable and plenty of comfortable seats for everyone. I will remember that porch swing as my happy place for a long time to come. We look forward to coming back!

My family of four stayed at this beautiful property for a week and my only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. It’s like going back in time in a good way. Very peaceful property right on the water. Every detail was well thought out as far as anything you need. Bailey island and surrounding small towns have so much character and charm. We would love to come back!

Would love to have had more of a
180° view of the ocean but the view we had was terrific and the 1918 home exuded charm and great style. Large living room fireplace was comfy and warm especially when we had some rain our first week. Walking down to the rocks was enjoyable and gave us wonderful memories.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Gills! The view was beautiful! The house was amazing and perfect for our family. We spent a lot of time on the porch swing, and fishing off the rocks. We explored the island on bikes and did some sea kayaking and hiking nearby as well.-

This home has a lot of character. This is our 2 year in a row visiting. As accurately described in the listing, it is rustic without washer, dryer, dishwasher and ac; however, the peacefulness it provides are worth it. Compared to our first visit, it is in need of some tlc, elbow grease and some repairs to the porch. We hope that plans are in order for a little extra love prior to next season because this home and location are incredible.

Thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at this quaint cottage. After spending a week camping on Hermit Island several years ago, we were looking for an alternative that provided the same throwback and rustic feel, with the comforts of a home. The Gills certainly delivered. Jumping off the rocks and watching the ocean for hours on end were the highlights. We spent our days relaxing on the front porch, reading and admiring the sea. We were also fortunately to kayak out of Mackeral Cove. The Gills was just as described, and we appreciated all this home offered. We hope to be back, as Bailey Island may be our favorite Maine destination yet. Thanks for this special place!

We had a fantastic week at the Gills. It is everything we could have hoped for. Stunning location, warm feeling inside. Short walk to a gentle beach. Dream trip for our family. Hope we can come back soon!

Our group of 5 with two "seniors" and three 20-30 somethings all loved our stay at The Gills. We had a hard time pulling ourselves away from the view on the front porch to enjoy all the other fun things to do in the area. Big front porch with comfortable furniture was the biggest hit with our group. We will definitely come back again.
Our group loves to cook and we had great meals. Beds were comfortable, fans in the bedrooms were perfect when we found ourselves in a heatwave. Very private location and quiet.
If you like to relax and watch the waves roll in and the boats go by, this is the place for you. Special treat was going down to the rocks very early and watching the sunrise!

Quirky old home
Very quirky old place, had a couple of issues which were promptly taken care of by Dave. Great view and porch, coffee maker makes the worst coffee. Just bought from the local store and microwaved in the morning. Salty water obviously due to location rather off when brushing your teeth. But all in all a unique experience.

The porch, swing and view were amazing. Coffee on the rocks was breathtaking. The house had a lot of character and quirky charm. First few days were unseasonably warm but having the fans was appreciated.
The location is perfect.

Rustic Retreat
The Gills was a great place to relax and unplug from all the busyness. The location is off the beaten path and feels very secluded which was a plus for my family. My favorite part about the placed was to sit out on the porch swing and read a book. The house is rustic but has a lot of character and feels homey. The place could probably benefit from some decluttering.

A wonderful fall retreat
Four adults in our party and we all enjoyed our fall retreat to The Gills. Beds were very comfortable and the cottage cozy and warm. The fireplace was a nice touch as we dined in front of it with our many lobster dinners. David delivered fresh lobsters daily and spoiled us royally. The kitchen could be better equipped with sturdier pots, a heavy frying pan and some wine glasses. But then again not everyone wants to cook on vacation like I do. Other than that we enjoyed our visit and the cottage tremendously.

Our new family tradition!!
I fell in love with the description of this property and location when I booked it but boy arriving and seeing it in person was even better!! We have been on many family vacations throughout the years and some overseas and you can't even compare. The Gills took our breath away. So relaxing... peaceful and time just being a family. The house itself was just perfect and and full of love... the decor and age of the home is just priceless...You can tell how much work has been put into this classic home. ... It's like going back in time! The view isn't bad either!!! Sitting on that swing or sitting on the rocks down by the water reading a book was just what we needed. The kids enjoyed riding their bikes around the corner to Lands End store or down the street to another beach exploring the island. My husband and I have already booked again next year and hope to many years to come!

Breathtaking
From the moment we arrived at this historic home with the ocean view, we were in love. My sister claimed the chaise lounge by the huge window overlooking the water and my mom and I ran out to the rocks which overlook the water. We spent quite some time the following days sitting and climbing the rocks and enjoying the crisp, New England ocean air. We enjoyed sitting on the porch with our tea and walking through the town. The house is at a convenient location, but incredibly secluded at the same time.
The beds were comfortable and of good quality. There were plenty of blankets and pillows to choose from. The shower and bathroom worked great. The house has kept it's historic charm, but all the necessary amenities (kitchen appliances, heat, bathroom - shower and toilets) were in top working order. The bedrooms are all unique. One room overlooks the water. It is bright and airy. The other room (master) is dimmer and has a couch and sitting chair. It's filled with a cabinet of books that we enjoyed looking at. All three of us would have loved to have the furniture in these rooms at our own homes. ;) They were so charming and beautiful! The third room is smaller and dimmer as well. It was equally charming and the beds feel new and are firm and comfortable. Lamps all over the house are plenty, which give sufficient light to enjoy our stay. There are thermostats in every area of the home. The house is very clean.
The home had some amazing quirks and personality. The chairs and couches in the living room were so unique. The huge wooden front door and green screen door were kept according to the time of the building...very authentic. The tapestries and furniture were also from that time period. There was so much to look at. If you enjoy a home that has been well preserved, with furnishings included - this is definitely for you. **One thing to remember with old homes is the dust - if you are allergic to dust (as I am) don't forget your allergy medicine! There are old books in every room as well as modern books. There are magazines that date back over the decades so we could enjoy seeing the change and consistency of the island and surrounding cities.
The charm in this home is the best I've ever seen. We met David, who was incredibly helpful and kind. My mom said she met Carter (the owner) one morning and he was so friendly. The neighbors were easy going.
Thank you David and Carter for preserving this gem and allowing so many of us to enjoy it!

The best!
We’ve been returning to the Gills for 7 summers, flying or driving cross country from California to return to our favorite place. And each summer we think of trying something new but cannot miss a week at the Gills. You cannot ask for a better stay; the location is tucked away and nestled in pine trees to have privacy from the neighborhood but with a big open yard and front porch to enjoy the sun and view of the ocean. The Gills is a beautifully maintained gem of an old Maine craftsmanship and every inch of it is so photogenic! It is impeccably decorated with antiques and the most enviable textiles on every bed, I love that it’s charm and history is in tact but extremely luxurious and comfortable. I’m an avid cook and I’ve never stayed at a better stocked rental kitchen, there is everything you could need or want here, no shortcuts or cheap rental supplies here - excellent coffee maker, sharp knives, a charcoal grill out back. Our favorite part is the big fire place and starting our day with a morning fire and having coffee on that big front deck. There’s a path through the front yard to the rocks and a few spots to jump off an swim when the tide is right. Aside from grabbing supplies - which there’s great wine shops and farmers markets nearby- you do not need to leave the property, it’s heaven! We’ve come with friends to the Gills, with family, or just the two of us — all of our greatest summertime memories are in this house. It has become out favorite family tradition.

GORGEOUS PROPERTY WITH AMAZING OCEAN VIEWS
If you are looking for a quintessential Maine cottage with privacy and with the most incredible views, then look no further. After researching countless rentals in Maine on VRBO, I discovered this gem which checked all the essential boxes. From the moment we drove up to the house, I knew this rental was special and uniquely different from other rentals nearby, and for that matter, any other houses my family has rented around the country. Walking into the house was like harkening back to the days when life was slower and simpler. From the wrap around porch, cedar shake architecture to the carefully curated decor, I knew right away our vacation at The Gills will forever be cemented and remembered fondly as one of the best vacations we have experienced as a family.
Every day, my kids, best friend and I would explore the rocky coastline to see if we could find marine life in the nearby tidal pools and we also go to explore the the local shops, art galleries, visited my alma mater, Bowdoin College, shopped in nearby Freeport, kayaked around the coves, hiked Devil's Back Trail and sailed on a wooden schooner during sunset. We also ate our weight in "lobstah" rolls from nearby restaurants and hired Zach's Lobster House so we could dine in privacy from the comforts of our porch, which I highly recommend, or have Dave, the wonderful property manager, who also happens to be a lobsterman and will catch fresh lobsters for you right out of the ocean so you can cook them yourselves if you are so inclined.
Our time at the Gills and Bailey Island was so magical and special and what we ALL enjoyed the most was just being able to reconnect without the usual distractions of home or the white noise from electronics. We all did not want to leave at the end of our trip. I cannot recommend enough the Gills or any other Gills properties Carter Smith owns. He truly loves Bailey Island and I can see why he takes great pain in making sure his guests experience what he loves most about Bailey Island, which is a slower pace life surrounded by incredible beauty and ever-changing ocean views.

Severely Overpriced
There are no misrepresentations in the descriptions or pictures, but at the price paid per night (and apparently I can't divulge what that was) I expected a lot more. I have used short-term rentals several times, so I have a base level of expectations.
I expected to have interior and exterior doors that open and close without excessive physical effort. I expected to have a handrail on the main outside steps that was not in danger of failing over because of rot, and not have numerous rot spots on the deck. I expected to use the front door in a normal fashion, and not to have to bolt it from the inside and padlock the backdoor. I expected to be able to open the downstairs windows, and I expected the front screen door to stay closed close without the aid of a twist-tie.
I did not expect massively flaking paint in all the upstairs rooms. I did not expect to be ankle deep in water at the end of a short shower, nor did I expect a moldy shower curtain. I didn’t expect the TV room to contain a single wooden chair. I didn’t expect 3 of the 6 dining room chairs to be coming apart. I also did not expect the dining table to slope 2 inches.
I did expect to be able to see in the kitchen – the lighting is horrendous, even during the day. All other rooms are under-lit as well. I expected a better selection of pots and pans, not ones with burned-on stuff on the bottom. I expected a couple of storage containers for left overs, or at least some aluminum foil or cling film.
This place is not for people who need a handrail to use stairs. The interior stairs are “quirky” with several portions having no hand rail. Also, the interior thresholds are of various heights and widths, which may cause minor or major trips.
It is peaceful and has a wonderful view. The kitchen has plenty of cutlery, plates, mugs, and glasses. Bottled water is supplied. A little gift basket of Maine products was left for us. But all in all, not worth the price per night.

Perfect Maine house on the ocean with beautiful views
The Gills ... ♥️♥️♥️ ... The place has stolen our family’s hearts ... We are fortunate to have been able to stay at the Gills ,the last two fourth of July’s .. We love the layout and the Awsome porch overlooking the ocean .. The boys all fish off the rocks , they catch stripped bass .. This house and island is a true Maine experience.. Dave the caretaker isca nice guy . He is around if you need him but he is not intrusive at all .. The only thing is the fridge would not keep our food cold enough .. But I think we just had too much in to be able for it to work at full capacity.. The only thing that I miss is a dishwasher that would be incredible.. Nobody wants to wash dishes on vacation .. But not a deal breaker for sure .. We will be back to Baily island next year .. Thanks Dave

Step back in time
This was our second stay at The Gills. It's a wonderful turn of the century Maine cottage where you can unplug and relax. We started each day on the porch drinking coffee, watching the lobster boats, sea birds and the changing colors. We were also lucky enough to be on a monarch butterfly migration path and saw large numbers of them each day. The cottage is eclectically decorated with antiques connecting you to the past. Highly recommend.

Quintessential Maine Experience!
This home is truly the quintessential Maine cottage that made our time here so memorable. We loved exploring everything around the house - lots of history, art, and special touches that are reminders of the past. The views - the sounds - the smells - all this we will take back home with us. Thank you for sharing this home and preserving such a special place.

First time in Maine- Did not want to leave!
The Gills could not be anymore charming and comfortable, and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing week with family & friends. The attention to detail was amazing and found myself roaming the house just looking at everything which really pulled in the essence of Maine and Bailey's Island. The ocean views are spectacular and were especially enjoyed from the large deck around the house, with swinging chair. Their is a secret swimming hole right out front of the house where we spent our afternoons jumping from rocks. The house was very clean, the beds super comfortable and I think the upstairs shower is now one of my favorites ever. Staying at the Gills really made our vacation one of the best ever and can not wait to comeback!

return to the gills
this was our second year renting the gills for a week, and it was just as magical and special as the first time...
the gills is a true blue maine home, and every room feels like it can tell a story. on a rainy foggy day, we used the (real wood burning) fire place in the main room - for sunny days we jumped off the rocks out front and spent the days swimming.
looking forward to a third summer at the gills already!

Paradise found
There is no place in the world like the gills. It was my first time there, but felt like coming home. There is above and beyond any amenity you could wish for in a rental property, no corners cut. Was one of the best vacations we've shared - and wonderful for sharing with friends. the best was mornings on the swing on the great porch, and laying out on the private rocks out front on the water. Already looking forward to returning. Thank you!
