About this house rental
Upon approaching The Gambrel Guesthouse the excitement and anticipation grows as glimpses of what lie ahead are slowly revealed. The first being the primitive log fence backdrop to the riot of native wildflowers at the roadway entrance. Upon entering the property, the gravel drive meanders more than a tenth of a mile through woodland terrain with breaks revealing more wildflowers and native grasses. Around the last curve you’ll get your first peak at The Gambrel Guesthouse. The gorgeous barn inspired log structure sits in the picturesque setting amidst the prairie and woodland surroundings. Take it all in as you make your way to the front door although it may be difficult to make it past the FRONT PORCH. Appalachian style rockers, a sitting bench, and a porch swing invite you to sit a while and let the worries of life melt away in this nature wonderland. Being offered to the general public beginning in May of 2019, your first step in the door will confirm what you already knew, this is the place! Hosts John and Claudia have turned a place with “great bones” into a Wisconsin old world charmer. Upon entering the CATHEDRAL FOYER, primitive farm implements, exposed barn beams, with antique touches set the tone and give a hint of what’s to come. Let’s take a tour:
-The GREAT ROOM features a gas fireplace boasting floor to ceiling stonework, a wagon wheel chandelier, exposed barn beams, western inspired leather couch, loveseat, and recliner amidst primitive accents and decor. 5 picture windows and a glass door reveal spectacular views of the back half of the 7 ⅔ acre retreat.
-The open concept floor plan joins The GOURMET KITCHEN with the Great Room. The kitchen was designed and installed with the help of local artisan, Glenn Olson of Port Wood Works. It looks more like something from a bygone era with the exposed beams, barn lighting, and whimsical touches that compliment Glenn’s millwork. The plan came together flawlessly giving the feeling of yesteryear while incorporating the luxuries expected in modern day living. They include: gas range/oven, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, cookware, utensils, dishes, highchair and a coffee station complete with a variety of gourmet coffees and teas. For the real coffee buffs, we’ve recently added all the pour-over paraphernalia including: coffee grinder, coffee scale with timer, electric gooseneck kettle, bonded filters, and a pour-over carafe. This fully equipped kitchen has a side door to the deck and multiple windows including a large picture window overlooking the native prairie and woodlands. A breakfast bar and kitchen nook make this space ideal for entertaining larger gatherings.
-Just off the kitchen on the far end is the DINING ROOM. Like every other room in the lodge, the dining room has plenty of windows including a large bay window to take in the views. The large farm table, also crafted by Glenn, seats 8 comfortably.
-The PRAIRIE ROOM (Bedroom #1) is more than just a master bedroom. This sleeping quarters is dripping with romance and includes a sitting area, handcrafted barn board king size bed, a charming gas stove fireplace, and rustic pine flooring with large area rug. Windows on two sides flood the space with light and boasts gorgeous views including the “Fox Trail”.
-Connected to The Prairie Room is The MASTER BATH. On any other property this adjoining space would completely steal the show. Among the amenities are: an antique style clawfoot tub with weathered corrugated tin wainscoting, slate tiled shower with sleek glass enclosure, barn door walk-in closet, exposed barn beams, gooseneck barn lighting, rustic pine flooring and plush area rugs, elegantly finished with a rock edge leathered black granite counter.
-Located on the upper level is The ASPEN ROOM (Bedroom #2) where you will enjoy a handcrafted king size bed made of Aspen timbers, sitting area, a barn door walk-in closet, rustic pine flooring with large area rug, and infrared stove fireplace with windows on two sides.
-The BARN ROOM (Bedroom #3) also on the upper level, features a handcrafted reclaimed barn board queen size bed, sitting area, a barn door walk-in closet, rustic pine flooring with large area rug, and infrared stove fireplace with windows on two sides.
-The HICKORY ROOM (Bedroom #4) is the third of three bedrooms on the upper level and features a handcrafted queen size bed made of bark intact hickory branches, rustic pine flooring with large area rug, and an infrared stove fireplace again with windows on two sides bringing in the natural light and capturing the scenic landscape.
-The spacious GUEST BATH serves the upstairs bedrooms. It comes complete with an exposed barn beam, rustic barn board tiled walk-in shower with glass enclosure, two sinks set in a live edge pine slab counter, circle sawn pine flooring, gooseneck barn lighting, plush area rugs, all in keeping with home’s barn theme.
-No barn inspired/themed home would be complete without a LOFT. Rounding out the upper level, this well appointed casual gathering space nestled in a canopy of barn posts, beams and planks overlooks the Great Room with windows on two sides. It has a sofa that pulls out for an additional bed.
-The LODGE ROOM is below level and takes on a completely different feel from the upper two levels. Finished with drawknifed logs harvested onsite, it boasts a true northwoods lodge feel. Included are: a bar, a premium pool table, wood burning stove fireplace, TV/family room (with large flat screen smart TV), and a dart board. This space has posts, beams, and pine ceiling and flooring to compliment the log walls. It’s furnished with log style white spruce pub tables and chairs for the cherry on top. There is a futon that provides an additional sleeping option.
-The BEAR’S DEN (Bedroom #5), is also located below level just off the Lodge Room and in the same spirit plays up the northwood’s theme in a big way. The kids don’t get stuck with what’s left here. Rest assured they’ll be fighting over this room as bear, deer, pine trees, fish, cabins and the like are all worked into the decor. It features two handcrafted aspen bunkbeds. One with a full size bottom and twin top and the second bunk is twin over twin. It also has a sitting area, infrared stove fireplace, and rustic pine flooring with a large Northwoods area rug.
-The Northwoods theme continues in The LODGE ROOM BATH and includes two more works from Glenn, the vanity and mirror to go along with a shower and sauna!
-The LAUNDRY ROOM, also below level, is equipped with washer, dryer, and laundry detergent for your convenience.
The large DECK is a griller’s dream. It’s equipped with a large premium gas grill and A Ceramic Kamado Grill with hardwood lump charcoal provided. Whether hanging out with loved ones or friends or just tending the grill this space oozes relaxation. Enjoy your favorite beverage in a comfy Adirondack chair amidst annuals planted in weathered tin tubs and an old whiskey barrel with views all around!
-What better way to enjoy the beautiful natural setting and extend the day than making smores over an open campfire. You can do just that at the FIRE PIT located just off the back Deck. It’s lined with large stones and surrounded with Adirondack chairs and plenty of backup camp chairs available to accommodate larger gatherings.
-There’s over a half mile of NATURE TRAILS onsite weaving between the Woodlands and Prairie. You don’t have to be a birder or prairie enthusiast to enjoy the native prairie. The striking contrast between the woodlands and prairie is quite beautiful for all to enjoy. For the enthusiast or those interested in the native prairie this is a must see. The prairie contains over 40 native species and begins to pop with color around the first of June with Lupine and Prairie Smoke and continues up until the first frost with Asters and Goldenrods providing the grand finale. The native grasses take center stage in the fall turning brilliant shades of red and orange. We have four sets of snow shoes to enjoy the property even in winter. Installing and nurturing the prairie has been a labor of love for John over the past 15 years. It becomes more dramatic every year as it continues to mature and new species are introduced. The prairie is a magnet for butterflies and colorful birds, to go along with a host of Wildlife that the property supports such as: Deer, Wild Turkey, Fox, Hawks, Owls, Sandhill Cranes, and Eagles to name a few.
-Once onsite it’s understandable that you may very well not want to leave. However, the area boasts many LOCAL ATTRACTIONS, not the least of which is the world renowned SAND VALLEY Golf Resort just minutes away. Other championship golf venues include Lake Arrowhead, Northern Bay, Sentry World, Stevens Point Country Club, and Bulls Eye Country Club all within 40 minutes of The Gambrel Guesthouse. If you’re into fishing, hunting, biking, boating, snow shoeing, skiing, ATVing, snowmobiling, hiking, or just hanging out at the beach, the opportunities are plentiful in the area.
-Although the accommodations are large and suited for families or groups, there couldn’t be a more ROMANTIC GETAWAY destination than The Gambrel Guesthouse. If you want to wow the love of your life for that special occasion, The Gambrel Guesthouse is way over the top.
-ADDITIONAL AMENITIES include: high speed internet (400 MBPS download
20 MBPS upload), Amazon Alexa, iron and ironing board, hair dryers, high chair, pack-n-play, desk/workstation, flat screen smart TV, and usable 3 car garage.
Perhaps the most prominent feature of the homes exterior is the Gambrel (barn-style) roof. We decided to run with the barn theme throughout the home thus the inspiration for our name “The Gambrel Guesthouse”.

I had four guys up to play golf at Sand Valley and this was a super location and outstanding cabin! The fire pit was perfect after a round to relax on a cool evening. The pool table was a hit as well! All the beds were super comfy, showers/bath had great pressure and plenty of hot water. It was super quiet for sleeping and great coffee in the morning! We will be back next year and in the years to come! John was a great host!!!!! Highly recommended!!!

Beautifully decorated barn-type house. Trails through wildflowers and trees. Big fire-pit with loads of wood to burn. Front porch full of rocking chairs, so peaceful; tons of bedrooms; a pool table, games & puzzles for rainy days. There were 10 of us, plenty of room for everyone. It was a great stay - thanks John!

This house was perfect for our family vacation this year. We had 9 adults and 4 kids and it fit everyone and more. The house had anything and everything you would ever need. If you want to sit by the fire and watch the stars, take a nice walking path, sit downstairs with the tv while people play pool, you can do it all. John and Claudia are amazing and willing to help in any situation that you would need. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to hoping to book again in the future.

Had a wonderful stay for Mother's Day weekend! A lot of pride and effort has gone into the property and it shows. The owner was very nice and attentive whenever we had a question. Would highly recommend and stay again.

It was a beautiful property both inside and outside and could not have been a more perfect setting for our wedding. We loved the warmth and whimsical touches throughout the cabin. The walking trails were a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors. We look forward to returning to this property in the future to create more magical memories with family and friends.

Amazing stay as usual!! This is a yearly retreat for our family and we thoroughly enjoy every last detail! Spacious, clean, comfortable, charming, unique, accommodating, cozy, great for anyone that loves the outdoors… walking trails are a wonderful touch. Anyone that stays here will not be disappointed.
Thank you. We will be back.

From the moment we drove up we were amazed. Beautiful house inside and out. The bedrooms were spacious, kitchen was fully stocked and the basement with a sauna was a hit for all of us. Living room was big enough for us all to sit around and chat and also have an impromptu dance party! Alexa was a hit! We enjoyed walks on the trail which was very relaxing. Even saw deer. Ended the day making a fire outside each night with hot beverages and just enjoying each others company. There wasn’t anything we needed that wasn’t provided by the hosts. We would definitely rent this house again. Thanks John!!

My (now) husband and I had the hardest time figuring out where we could get married that would be intimate but not crowded, gave some of our guests the opportunity to stay the night if needed, and checked the boxes we wanted in a type of “venue.” Although we had plans for using the yard and it rained on our wedding day, we are both incredibly happy and thankful we got married here.
I also cannot say enough good things about the hosts. John was incredibly understanding and accommodating with check in and check out. We also appreciate him letting us come to see the property before booking to ensure it was exactly what we wanted.
Overall, we absolutely loved our stay and cannot talk more highly of the overall house. We already have plans with some of our close friends to try to book a weekend every year for our anniversary.
Thank you John & Claudia for opening your beautiful home to others and giving us the opportunity to have one of our most important days here.

You will not be sorry you chose the Gambrel Guesthouse! We spent a week there with our family, ages ranging from 2 to 63, and everyone enjoyed being there. It is beautiful inside and out as well as very comfortable for a group. Special spots are the loft living room and the nature trail right off the porch. John and Claudia have everything set up to make your time there special. They are very prompt in responding to any questions and truly want you to enjoy your time there. We will not hesitate to return to see the prairie flowers or try out the snowshoes!

We stayed here for a hockey tournament in Wisconsin Rapids and this place was perfect. It was about 12 minutes from the rink and there was a ton of room so everyone could have their own space. The backyard and firepit area were ideal for a group and the yard was big enough for the team to play football in. The kitchen was big and had everything we needed for cooking for a large group.

Had mom’s 85th birthday party here and everyone had a wonderful time. Home is very cute and the yard super with walking paths, fire pit and grills. We had a lovely time!

Stayed at the house for four nights while on a trip to play Golf at Sand Valley and Sentry World. House is appointed as advertised and our hosts, John and Claudia made it easy to check in and check out. Plenty of room to relax in the living room and downstairs as well as out on the back deck or at the fire pit. The four of us enjoyed our stay.

This was our second stay at Gambrel Guesthouse, and it was wonderful! John and Claudia are great hosts. The house is beautiful, interesting, well stocked and very clean! We spent an afternoon at Lake Petenwell swimming and playing volleyball. The next day we rented a pontoon on the Wisconsin River. A great long family weekend! Thanks for the memories!

We brought our small staff team here for a 2 day retreat and it could not have been more perfect! The house is in incredible condition and every detail is taken care of! The property is stunning, the accommodations are extremely comfortable and we will absolutely be back!

This was a five star rental. Our family only uses Verbo when renting vacation properties. We were impressed with all the details the owners had in this house. We had things like plastic bags, extra towels and toilet paper. The three and one half baths were beautiful. The detail in the decorating was exquisite. The prairie surrounding the home was beautiful. On top of that, the owners were really fantastic to talk with when necessary.

This property was great for a large group with young children! There was ample sleep space for several families to spread out. The house also offered amenities for young ones, such as toddler dishware, baby gate, and high chair. A highlight was the setting, back away from the road with a beautiful nature trail and large yard for lots of fun and adventure! Overall a gem of a property!

Great place to stay! John and Claudia are great hosts, promptly responded to questions.
The walking paths on the property and the front and back porches were a hit with our group. Guesthouse is very comfortable and accommodating for a large group. We had 14 in our group. The lower level was a great place for the grand kids to hang out and sleep.

My family and I stayed at the Guesthouse in June. The place was immaculate. The owners are wonderful and responsive. They have thought of everything.
The kitchen had enough of all we needed. They had full length mirrors and comfy beds and cozy towels. There is a gas and a charcoal grill plus an amazing fire pit, not to mention indoor fireplaces and an indoor sauna. The private trail was a great touch too. I can’t say enough. Just book it. You won’t be sorry.

We had a fantastic time at the Gambrel Guesthouse! We did an elopement along the pathway in the woods-it was just beautiful. It was supposed to rain and there were plenty of back-up options for us. The large porch was a favorite hang out area. Our family loved relaxing all over the home. It was incredibly decorated and felt cozy. Plenty of photo-ops. The three car garage was an added bonus area to set up our dinner tables. Having a morning coffee by the fire was a perfect way to wake up. The trails are wonderful. We just enjoyed every bit of our trip. The Gambrel Guesthouse will forever be a part of our memories. John was such a pleasant and responsive host! I would 100% stay here in the future. It was very peaceful. Nearby supper club was delicious. We stayed on property but there was a lot to do nearby. I cannot forget they are welcoming to our two dogs! Our entire group raved about the place.

Wonderful place to stay. Get for dogs lots of space to roam. We biked a lot which was great in this area. Big house for a large family to spreed out in.

First of all, John and Claudia were a pleasure to deal with! Responsive. Kind. Upfront and Transparent are words that quickly come to mind. The property is stunning as you approach from the winding gravel road off the main road and only gets better as you explore each level of the home and each acre of the land. Everything was included that we could have possible needed (minus the beer ha!). The place was spotless when we arrived and the ambiance is second to none. Will definitely be coming back for another stay. My guess is you will feel the same way by the end of your stay...
Cheers!

We rented this wonderful home to celebrate our family Christmas. We were all very comfortable there. Plenty of room and the home was beautifully decorated. Our favorite part was our dogs were welcome there and there were paths through the beautiful wooded property that we could walk them on. Very peaceful and relaxing.

The winter scene here is absolutely stunning! To this Houstonian, it's simply magical. The snowkissed trees, the deer leaping in the backyard, the fields of freshly fallen snow....Mother Nature didn't disappoint and neither did our hosts. The entire home is filled with little visual “Christmas Hugs” at every corner. This place is like walking into a Hallmark greeting commercial for the holidays. Every room, every nook and cranny draws at your heart strings. If you're looking for a postcard getaway or hungry for a cozy Christmas cottage away from the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect retreat. It truly is a sight for sore eyes. Our family gathered together in honor of my late father-in-law, a native of Wisconsin Rapids. We were looking for a place to have one last hurrah with all the grandchildren under one roof. It was just the perfect match for us. We couldn't have been more grateful. It's really what I believe my father-in-law would have wanted for all of us. The cabin fit four couples and six singletons (ages 13, 9, and four adults, comfortably). Both futons and one blow-up full-sized mattress were used. Our hosts had two more twin blow-up mattresses and one more full-sized mattress, but we only ended up needing the one. They had a pile of extra blankets stored in the same linen closet. The only thing I thought we could have used more of were bath towels. The coffee/tea bar was well stocked and the kitchen (including spices) was ready to use. The hosts provide all the kitchenware and dish ware. My husband and a nephew made use of the very awesome sauna. The bottom floor also housed the billiard table which was gorgeous and loved by our sons, and the big screen TV provided an excellent way for us to cheer the Packers on Monday night! Go Pack Go! The top floor full bathroom was spacious and outfitted with lots of drawers, which were helpful. Make sure you lock that door though or you will be on full display. The shower is easy and comfortable but there is only a transparent glass barrier between you and whoever happens to open that door unaware. And when half of our party had flight delays on the last day, our hosts were most attentive and accommodating. Luckily for us, the cabin was free for another two nights so we were able to extend our reservation quite easily with their guidance. Thank you so much, John and Claudia. We are happy and thankful your property was the backdrop to all of the new family memories that were made.

Our family had a great time just relaxing in the cabin and enjoying our early Thanksgiving celebration together. There was ample space, and everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare our meals. The rooms were beautiful and we loved the gaming area for entertainment. We wished the weather was a little nice so we could have used the fire pit ... maybe next time. Saw deer running through the back prairie in the morning on Sunday - beautiful area.

Truly an excellent property. The bedrooms were comfortable and beautifully appointed. Kitchen contained everything imaginable for our 2 "gourmet" family chefs. All rooms easily accomodated 10 people. The billiard table in the basement was a special feature for us. The location offered lovely walking trails and parks with amenities for youngsters.
Recommendations: 1. brighter lighting for evening reading, especially in the great room and 2. animal owners should clean up the yard after their pets' visits.

This home was even better than I expected! The large, beautifully groomed property was a perfect place to play and relax. You'll feel like you're the only people for miles and miles! The home was spotless and had everything you could possibly need. Our group was 4 adults, 2 teens and a newborn and we felt perfectly cozy. Likewise, we're hoping to come back with 4 more adults next time and I know it will feel just as spacious. Do not hesitate to book this wonderful home!!

I rented this property for an executive retreat. The building is really impressive, custom woodworking throughout leading to a rustic cabin feel. It has incredible amenities including walk in tile showers, a sauna, pool table/hang out area, and a large deck overlooking a meadow. We were there only one day/night and saw deer and a bobcat! The contact, John, met me when I arrived and provided me a short tour including some information pertinent to the place. He was very helpful and ready to answer any questions. The home was spotless and well-appointed with everything needed. Truly a great property! Would definitely return.

This property is absolutely breathtaking. the photos posted don't even do it justice. It is a beautiful, cozy, relaxing getaway, Perfect location for a small intimate wedding. Everything about this place is outstanding. John and Claudia go above and beyond. Love the little extra perks (coffeebar and fall scented shampoo/conditioner they provide for you). The only thing I would suggest is maybe having a brighter light option outside on the back porch. As it got darker outside it was hard to see that first step of porch. Other than that we can't wait to come back!

We have stayed at many large vacation rentals. This one is at the top of our list so far. We celebrated a birthday, golfing at sand valley in Nekoosa, WI, a mini vacation getaway for our group. This vacation rental was perfect for our multi generation family gathering. Large in size and the photos do not do it justice. The interior decorating and attention to details to make our stay more comfortable did not go unnoticed. We loved the nature trails through the property and enjoyed the fire pit under the stars. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was fully stacked with everything we needed to prepare large family meals each night. The hosts were super to work with and you could tell they really care about the property and their guests. Thank you for making this milestone birthday party an amazing trip.

Stunning! My wife and I had our wedding in the backyard and it was absolutely beautiful! The cabin was perfect and has everything you would need. The property was gorgeous which was perfect for wedding photos. The owners do amazing job taking care of the property. A tent fit perfectly in the backyard and is a perfect location for smaller weddings. We will definitely be returning for more of a relaxing vacation. Would recommend to family and friends!

The Gambrel Guesthouse was a wonderful place for our 13th annual family summer get together! The house is immaculate and well stocked. Lots of activities available on the property and in the area. John and Claudia were great hosts and quickly responsed to questions before our visit. We had a great time!
