We loved our time at Portasal Living. The villa was amazing, with lots of space and the pool was amazing for a dip every day.. From seeing toucans and parrots right before us to the amazing dinner by our private chef Desiree, it was such a great time. Heriberto was great in getting our tour and trip tickets for all the sights. They even greeted us with a Bottle of wine for our anniversary. They also stocked the fridge with cold beer for us to have when we arrived. We are already talking about a return trip!!!

Overall we absolutely loved this home and the jungle experience it provided. The location was ideal for us as we wanted to be close to nature and in a smaller more local setting. (If you’re using Waze to locate the house you can enter “Calle Portalón” which is the road that dead ends at the neighborhood gate.) The AC and ice maker were luxuries that we appreciated. Heriberto was very attentive to our needs and gave us many recommendations for nearby activities. We always felt extremely safe in this home.
We were there at the end of June (rainy season) and typically the rain rolled in by 2-3pm and continued into the night. As long as you are up and out early then the rain is no big deal. There were bugs but we used the bug zappers and fan during movie nights to help. We considered the “visitors” part of the adventure of this house and had a lot of fun watching the geckos, seeing the giant Cane toad (DO NOT TOUCH!), toucans and iguana during our stay.
It is important to note that ALL family shared spaces are open air (not enclosed and not air conditioned). We stayed 7 nights and were pleased to find out that our stay came with two cleanings, which was wonderful. The rooms are NOT connected so I would NOT recommend this house for people with small children. We have 3 teenagers so it was fine.
Overall, our stay was AMAZING and this house played a huge role in making it magical!!

Stayed January-March, 2024. The house had everything that we desired and the hosts (Portasol) took great care of us.

The location was inaccurate it takes close to 5 hours to there from San Jose the people drive real slow so it takes a lot longer than three hours. The house and host r wonderful but it is a long way away from San Jose and u don’t just need a 4 wheel drive u need a high profile 4 wheel. If u like nature and quit which we do it is great will go back but now no what to expect.

it was a great place if you want privacy. Its in the middle of the jungle, but a short drive to different places. Matapul Beach is gorgeous, and a quick drive. i would stay there again. and definitely go to the waterfall.

It was simply amazing and the view are spectacular. We had a wonderful time. The host was very commutative and very friendly. The area is very peaceful. Just one recommendation bring off spray the mosquitos a bit too much. We would come back for sure.

Just WOW! The property and the management team are amazing. If you are looking for a "jungle" getaway then look no further. The house is immaculate and perfectly secluded near an amazing waterfall for swimming. We loved the pool and the outdoor seating areas to enjoy our daily encounter with all of the birds (especially the toucans). All of the amenities are wonderful and the team managing everything are so easy to communicate with. They were available anytime we needed them. We would all stay at Casa Monos Locos again on our next trip to Costa Rica.

The house is nice, located in the rainforest with beautiful sunsets. Everything was extremely clean, the cleaning lady is top! We were enjoying the pool and sunbathing at the terrace which is nice sunny. All parts of the house and garden are very private, you never see the neighbors. There is beautiful natural pool for swimming in the river and picnic area just next to the house. Communication with the property management was outstanding, they were always attentive and helpful. We had problems with electricity shortages (most of the times problem outside of the Portasol area), which was creating struggles for our remote work due to lost internet connection. Just another day we received a backup generator which was really amazing and appreciated. Unfortunately, we had bad luck with cicada invasion, they overpopulated just around the house and there was nothing we could do about it. The cicadas created noise of 82 decibels nonstop from 8:30am till 6pm. Then in the night we couldn't sit in the open living/dining area because they were flying around like crazy and bumping into us. I would ask in advance what is the current situation because it happens only during mating period just few weeks per year. Other than that, we had good time with my husband,

Dream trip of a lifetime
I don't think words can do justice to this picturesque property in the rainforest. Not even photographs can capture the peaceful, tropical paradise in the treetops. The house is both elegant and practical. My mother and I spent 7 days at this beautiful retreat and swam every day in the private pool...even in the rain. Our favorite nearby town was Dominical, although The Montapala beach was very nice and just a 10 minute drive. Surprisingly, we didn't see any monkeys or tropical birds while at the house, (we heard birds) but we were able to go to Manuel Antonio, 40 minutes away and see them. If you are afraid of insects and lizards, this house isn't for you....but what do you expect in the Rainforest? The nearby waterfall and river were nothing short of breathtaking, and we always felt safe at Portasol. I will remember this adventure forever and always, and am so grateful for the opportunity!

We enjoyed our stay. Very rainy for our time which wasn't the worst thing for the rainforest. Big round table to gather around and play cards.

Amazing property!
This is an amazing place! It’s quiet, and beautiful and has everything you need to spend time soaking in nature. We saw so many animals here. We saw an anteater coming home one night, and lots of frogs and lizards. The river and waterfall is within very close walking distance & you should definitely plan to swim there—it’s breathtaking! The staff was so helpful & easy to reach. We appreciated the gated security, too. We would definitely stay here again!

Very nice if u know what you’re getting into
The place is very cool in a really interesting place. Everyone told us the road in would be a problem but it wasn’t and we didn’t have a 4x4. Security is very nice and helpful. The house is nice and done well. We are 9 people and it is meant to fit us but almost everyone is in two bedrooms with one one bathroom between them. That was a bit of a struggle as well. The pool is cool and has a cool view but we went during rainy season and it was too cold for us. I’d def think hard before going during rainy season though. Everything is outdoors. Each bedroom and the kitchen are indoors but to get from one place to the other you have to go outdoors. The seating and eating area is also outdoors. It’s covered from the rain but the wildlife is very intense. There are bats flying around and massive lizards and frogs and grasshoppers and insects. So if you’re really good with bugs etc, go for it. If that makes your kids nervous, it can be stressful. The waterfall nearby is so cool but unfortunately we kept getting poured on so we didn’t get to enjoy it. If u go during the rainy season, go out early all will be fine. I’m summary, if u love the outdoors, got for it. If u want some space between you and the outdoors, look elsewhere.

Needs a remodel
Although the property was amazing and the waterfall nearby was to die for, the house is in need of work. The downstairs bedrooms which house 4 of the 5 beds was absolutely infested with spiders and bugs. It took me 2 hours to kill them all, but still kept coming in. There are cracked in the ceiling, molding, and doors that allow every bug from the forest in. We also found out the hard way that you need to turn off every light in the home and use candles for light after 5pm when the locusts are in the area. We were attacked by hundreds of them. With the outdoor living area, we were pretty much banned from it after 5. I'm sure it's not a problem when the locusts aren't there. As for the rest of the house: It was nice and as advertised. Wifi doesn't work downstairs (just a note). As for the property: It's a 500 acre secure property with amazing rain forest. It truly was a paradise. The waterfall and swimming hole made us forget all about the bug infested room. The swimming hole is 15 feet deep and there is a cliff you can jump off of into the pool from about 20 feet up. It was so awesome! If they would remodel that downstairs I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. The fact that they think it's ok boggles my mind. It's dated and in obvious need of serious attention.

Away from it all in the Central Pacific
This was our first trip to Costs Rica and had just 5 days to experience as much as we could. Staying with Portalosol Living in Portalon allowed us the experience of being nestled away from tourists surrounded by lush rainforest. The house is as it’s described-all the mechanicals and appliances worked well. It was nice to have our own space to cook a bit. An advantage for our 2 families who enjoy being able to have a refrigerator stocked with favorites. Because it was a first trip of just 5 days, at times I might have wanted to be closer to Quepos where our adventures generally left from. Or if the long dirt road were paved that might have helped. So being in an area that is remote had its challenges, but the privacy afforded us by the house and beautiful property was a reasonable trade-off compromise.

Lush tropical perch in the rainforrest canopy!
This was our first visit to Costa Rica, and we could not have gotten a better first impression of this amazing country upon arriving in PORTASOL. This home is even MORE amazing than the pictures can capture. The feel of a canopy treehouse has to be experienced, and that is really what this is! We were a family of 7, so the bunk room with the 4 kids was great, and then the other downstairs queen went to Mama, and my husband and I had the upstairs master. The open air living room and dining room was great. The regular evening storms were so refreshing sitting on the porches. The sounds of the jungle surround you and interesting flora flow from the grounds into the natural growth. We had a tree frog visit nightly near the pool, as well as a giant toad of some sort. The nearby river is magical. Our first morning we saw a blue morph floating by as we scambled in the riverbed for a few hours as well as a Jesus lizard! The staff is so helpful and friendly. You MUST have a 4wd car for this off road approach to the home. The gravel road is steep, but we never had any issue at all. We made the ultimate great decision to hire a chef for several nights during our stay, which made the vacation extra special. The management arranged it all, and we had a menu planned for each night that exceeded my expectations! They also helped organize all of our excursions and each day felt more amazing than the one before! I cannot wait to return. This is a special place in a special country!

Casa Mono Locos BLISS
Casa de Mono Locos was easily the most relaxing place I have ever vacationed. The serenity tucked between the sounds of the rainforest animals communicating, and trees rustling with showers of intermittent rain drops, was blissful. The infinity pool drops off into green lush forest with an opening just wide enough for a sunrise/sunset view. Sitting on the wrap-around deck with a cup of coffee and a book was honestly one of the highlights of my trip! I can't describe the peace-of-mind and clarity-of-heart I recieved from my trip to Casa de Mono Locos. I am so thankful to have experienced this private oasis that is just minutes away from the adventures of Manuel Antonio, Dominical and Quepos! Book your trip here... YESTERDAY! Don't wait. It's beyond worth it.

Casa de Paz
This review is for Casa de Paz, as the original house we booked ( shown in this picture) was not available upon arrival.
Casa de Paz was a very nice house near to the Casa de los monos locos that we had reserved at VRBO. The Portasol loving area is a beautiful area in the middle of the jungle, up the round from the main highway about 2 kilometers. It is a convenient location as it is about 20 or 30 minutes to Dominical and Quepos and just a little farther to manual Antonio and Uvita. The house was comfortable for our family of 8 and the air conditioning in the bedrooms was a valuable necessity that made sleeping comfortable. We had many little visitors such as frogs, toads, and all kinds of insects including a praying mantis that were so cool to see each evening. The Portasol living property has its own beautiful waterfall to spend a peaceful afternoon. The staff of Portasol were also very helpful with providing us with information. Only a few minor problems. One is that the house we rented had a room with bunk beds to fit our 4 kids, while this house didn’t so we had to figure out sleeping arrangements differently. We had originally booked the Casa de los monos locos due to the features of the beds in the 3 bedrooms, so we were a bit disappointed about the change in house without any notice until arrival. Also the Casa de Paz has to share its WiFi with another house and is extremely slow. It says high speed internet, but it was not that at all. Overall the house was very nice in a nice location with nice amenities such as abundant hot water, air conditioning, fans, washer and dryer. It

Truly a spectacular property and location!
Seven of us stayed at Casa Monos Locos between Apr 28 and May 5, 2018. The experience was authentic Costa Rican rainforest and an amazing adventure for all. The 3-hour drive from San Jose Airport is excellent, with new paving in the area of Portasol. The gravel road climb to the property from the highway is a thrilling yet safe drive (note 4WD required). The drive through the small village of Portalon on the way to the property is wonderful and authentic. Upon arrival, you realize how private the property is, with no other villas or structures in sight.
The bedrooms of the villa are extremely comfortable and A/C controlled. The kitchen is well-equipped for all your needs. Wifi is good, and the satellite TV with some English-language stations was great for background music. The deep pool beside the deck is perfect for re-energizing after a long day, and was amazing to stand in, in the rain during the one tropical thunderstorm we experienced. The waterfall and pools that are a five minute walk from the house were equally amazing. There is a diversity of fauna and wildlife to be seen without ever leaving the property. The night-time sounds of the jungle are amazing!!
The property is completely safe and secure with 24/7 security access control at the entrance to the Portasol properties. The property is also perfectly situated for short drives to Dominical, Manuel Antonio Park, zip-lining and white water rafting on the Savegre River. David, of Portasol Living was a perfect host and point of contact for us. As a former guide, he is a wealth of local information on everything from shopping to the best tours in the region. I highly recommend this wonderful property for first-time visitors to Costa Rica! It will leave you fulfilled, completely relaxed, and just like us - waiting to return!

Best bday ever!
It was almost a year ago I decided to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends at Monos Locos in Portasol, best decision I could have ever make.
We went for the whole week and had a great time. The house has everything so we even had a BBQ night, watched the sunset, side of the pool, then a starry night with the jungle concert... Words can't describe.
And the service was the cherry at the top of the celebration!
Seriously thinking of going again (for the third time actually) this year at least for a weekend cause it is less than 30 minutes from Quepos airport anyway!
Strongly recommended for going with a group of friends or vacation with the whole family!

Rain Forest Hideway
What a beautiful place in the jungle! My family of 5, (2 adults, 2 large teenage boys and 1 teenage girl) had a wonderful time with plenty of room for more. The next trip we'll bring at least 3 more friends. The house is amazing and has every amenity. Anyone looking to relax, could just stay in the pool or on the huge deck overlooking the lush green vegetation. Then there is the staff. Guillermo, Alex and most of all David, plus the cooks (If only they would come to our house to help out :). Everybody was attentive, very helpful, flexible and worked hard to make the trip perfect. The zip lines, horseback tour, scuba diving were all professionally operated and focused on safety. I travel weekly and this was the best location in the last 2 years by far. Highly recommend everyone visit and experience "Pura Vida" in person with the Tico people. Oh, and the waterfall 5 minutes away. Make the jump - we all did!

Jungle paradise!
Amazing place to stay. This location was the highlight of our trip. We stayed here for eight nights with two families. Four adults and four kids (ages 8-13) fit comfortably. Guillermo and Alex, the care takers were very helpful and arranged a last minute rental car during the high peak season. They also arranged our trips such as rafting, canopy tours etc..The house felt very "Costa Rican" in comparison to the other places we stayed. The living room and dining room are outdoors and the bugs were never a problem even at night with the outdoor lights on. We did not even use bug spray. There is an amazing waterfall on the property as well that we went swimming in. Make sure you bring groceries on your way to the house! Loved the gated area so much that we considered buying. You will need four wheel drive to access the property, but that is almost a requirement if you are doing any adventuring in to the wilderness in Costa Rica.

PURA VIDA
Wow, where to start? How do you review paradise? Heaven on earth? I think the people of Costa Rica "Tico's" say it best in the phase you will hear over and over "Pura Vida" This was my sixth trip to Costa Rica having fallen in love with the country some 10 years ago. Although I have always understood the meaning of "Pura Vida" to be pure life, it took this trip and a week at Casa de Mono Locos for me to experience it. Whether it was walking out my bedroom to jump in the pool every morning before anyone else was awake, doing a few leisure laps or floating on back in silence or seeing the beautiful flowers and birds everywhere. Maybe it was sitting on a large piece of driftwood on the beach every night watching the sunset over the Pacific without another person besides us in site. I got it !! The nature in this region of Costa Rica is remarkable. I highly recommend a hike in Manual Antonio Park. Hiring a guide is the way to go, as you may miss allot. I have never since so many monkeys, iguanas and sloths in all my life. The wildlife around will not disappoint. We also went white water rafting close to Portasol and it was mind blowing. I know you should keep reviews short but I haven't even mentioned the water fall, the beauty of the house or the staff at Portasol. All of which are great. The house is beautiful. I loved the hand carved rails, custom kitchen and large deck overlooking the rainforest. I wanted to get away and recharge my mind, body and soul and I did. Some of my friends stayed plugged in with internet access available, but I choose to turn everything off. No TV ad's !!! Trust me when I tell you the deadlines, emails, voice messages and to do lists will be there when you get back. You owe it to yourself to experience "Pura Vida" for yourself. I have already booked my next trip. See you next year, my Tico friends and as always "Pura Vida"
