The staff, level of service that they provide, and the food are really what made this property special. Even though they didn’t speak a lot of English, they made us feel extremely comfortable and welcomed.
We loved having some space as we kicked back after a days of running around and sightseeing in other cities. The sitting room with view of the garden was amazing.
The in-room onsen tub was also a highlight. Even though the hotel onsen was lovely, it was so nice to have our own space to use, with the deep wooden tub.
I would definitely recommend staying here if you want to experience a more traditional Japan. However if you don’t want to eat traditional Japanese food, I would choose a different property as I don’t think they would be able to accommodate many changes to their menu.
The property is a bit older so there were some musty smells here and there, but nothing awful

Amazing atmosphere, delicious food, tentative and graceful service. This was the highlight of our honeymoon.

Amazing hosts, lovely location, beautiful rooms and private bath. Was able to use the public bath too which I ended up having to myself. Lots of information given by staff and in booklets, very attentive to needs and beautiful grounds. Great experience.

Everything - a great location, beautiful rooms (you live in a private tranquil Japanese house by Japanese garden with koi pond), fantastic kaiseki dinner and breakfast, and impeccable hospitality. This is a special place, one of the most memorable and beautiful accommodations we have stayed. We will come back again.
None. Everything was just wonderful.

The highlight was definitely the lovely kaiseki dinner, which we had in a private room as we had a big group booking with other friends. The onsen was also really lovely and private with no other guests present when we were there. The grounds were so tranquil and peaceful, and you feel transported back a hundred years once you enter. Rooms were large and the futon was very comfortable. Service was spot on as well.
Just minor things. We forgot to tell the staff to arrange kids dinner for our children and so they had to eat the adults' meal. The humidifier was also not working really well and the room became really dry with the heater on.

Gyokutei is a beautiful and very traditional Ryokan. The staff was extremely polite and friendly. Breakfast and dinner was fantastic. Huge apartments with private bathtub, beautiful public bath and garden. We had a wonderful time at Gyokutei. It's easy to get there by public transportation (e.g. from Tokyo/Kyoto).
