One of the hotel's best features is the front terrace and view. My room was at the front so also had a great view. The poolside views are also good. It is a vintage building with historical features. Wifi is available in the common areas not in the rooms.
My room was carpeted and had a old stuffy smell; however, once the windows were open, it helped air out the room. The night I arrived there was nothing on offer as most staff was off. Breakfast was a typical Portuguese continental breakfast. Breakfast is served at 8am and something to factor if you are expected early at a pick up point for a day trip. They are also very strict about towels. I had a double room which came with two sets of towels. The next day when the room was cleaned, they took the clean set and left the set I already used. I support environmental initiatives but this time I felt the need for a fresh towel. I asked for a fresh towel and was refused.

It was located only a 15 minutes walk from the town centre. The room was large and clean. It was very reasonably priced and good value for money . The restaurant was also great value and food was good

Quirky, faded grandeur, city view from the terrace (and our room), comfortable beds, some friendly staff (though not all), rooftop pool. Good location too, especially if you like exercise!
Breakfast was, as most people say, a bit rubbish. Poor quality food, not enough of it, dreadful coffee and no hot water for tea?! Pool furniture was just a handful of broken pool chairs, no loungers.

The hotel was very cool and beautiful, and the staff very nice. Our room was huge with a view of the whole town. There was a lovely hotel terrace where you could have drinks and food, and it was so nice to sit there at the end of the evening looking out over the town.

Very cozy and authentic hotel with interesting history - remind us a hotel from the movie Grand Budapest :)
Not is suitable for people who prioritize super comfort and luxury. But this is perfect option for those who appreciate good atmosphere and nice old furniture and interior.

Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Breakfast options were below expectations.

The room was a good size, housekeeping was very thorough and the staff were very polite. I liked the outside seating area and enjoyed reading my book there and appreciating the view.
The breakfast was a big let down for me, not much option at all, sometimes the milk also didn’t taste right which completely put my off other days it was fine. Only on the final day there was bread which I believe was because they had more bookings.
I also found there was a lot of noise during the night or early hours, including people going back and forth up the stairs and hallways and the reception phone ringing so I didn’t have the best night sleeps here unfortunately.

The view from the terrace is spectacular. The stuff is very professional with respectful attitude.
The breakfast could be more diverse and warm in case of eggs for example. The wifi connection is only common rooms which I think nowadays should be in every room.

Location and friendly staff.
It's a really old and noisy hotel. It felt like the place was haunted. There was mold in all over the bathroom. The breakfast was the worst of all. Frozen bread and no organization what so ever.

building, place, wievs
Kitchen. Poor breakfast, terrible dinner. Pool not alloved after 19:00, difficult parking in hotel.
The building is about 100 yeras old, It has own chrarizma. Building seems good from outside. Inside is like museum. Somebody like It. Me too. But the bathroom can be cleaner and need some new paint on the wall.
Kitchen is at your own risk. We tried breakfast. Is verry poor and mostly cold. But the dinner was really fault.

Nothing. Place was falling apart. Had bloody cat.
Broken furniture. Cat. Ants. Cold water. Showers that didn't work. Sheets that didn't fit. Boring food, breakfast, and dinner. Noise and staff that have basically given up.

The view from the terrace is amazing, and a great place to relax with a cocktail before exploring the town of Funchal below you.
This is an old hotel with creaking wooden floors. Fine if you are on the top floor, but not so fine if you are trying to sleep with late arrivals or early risers creaking, scraping, and shrieking only several feet above your head. Carpets were invented for this situation!

The whole atmosphere of the hotel was really amazing. It felt like we were living in the 30s as the floor was creacking on a lot of spots and thats what made it even more enjoyable.
The sight from out window was beautiful, the room was really big and all was clean.
The best of all of this was the staff and the service they provided. They were really generous and always helpful. After 2nights every time we came back to the hotel to sleel or to realx we felt like coming home bcs of the amazing people/staff and the service they provided.

The only thing I liked about this place was the beautiful exterior and that the hotel had a rooftop pool.
The owner of this hotel really need to take a reality check, because this does not qualify to be a three star hotel. The exterior is beautiful, but the inside could really need some improvement. I would say that the hotel saw its glory days in the early eighties. The room I was assigned was not at all the same as the pictures in the ad. It had no windows at all, and no balcony with a view over the ocean as promised. What it had was in fact a sort of whole in the ground with dead flowers and no view at all. Very claustrophobic I I asked the staff multiple times for a better room, because I had ordered I “premium room”. I was told that the hotel was fully booked, even though it did not seem like it at the time. The bathroom in my room was not cleaned properly and on more than one occasion I had to get rid of huge bugs (see picture). The shower curtain stank of mold. The complementary breakfast must be the poorest one I have ever eaten. Dry white bread, sweaty cheese, something resembling egg, cooked bacon, and a thin yellow liquid to drink (not juice). Not even a vegetable in sight, just some fruits from a can. One day it was brown bananas. Small black ants crawled all over the cutlery (see picture). On the day it rained there was a hole in the ceiling and water dripped onto the food buffet! (see picture). The staff was not really polite or welcoming. I wished them good morning and all I got was a “grunt” back. I was told not to leave the hotel on some of the night due to the lack of a concierge at the night shift, so they had to lock the doors. If I had come back later than 12 pm I would’ve been locket out!

Fantastic view of Faunchal and the Atlantic ocean. Cool breeze from the sea kept the room cool.
Steep hike up from Funchal [took taxis most of the time, only about 5euros].
Booking .com booking conformation sheet stated 'Tea/coffee maker', there was none in the room, also states 'Cable channels', there weren't any.
Rooms dated and in need of refurbishment.

All of it ,I wouldn't recommend it to the Adams family.I thought I had walked into the stone age,Don't think this hotel has been touched since it was built

The room was very big and spacious and had a lovely seaview balcony. The view was absolutely breathtaking in the morning and an amazing view of funchal lit up at night.Breakfast was very enjoyable with good variety and options.
The monte carlo hotel is located in a great area only about ten minute walk to funchal.I would highly recommend staying here but may not be suitable for the elderly as there is a bit of an up hill climb.

- Wonderful view from the hotel terrace with the swimming pool
- Quiet atmosphere in the hotel
- Fresh fruits for breakfast (not every day, but it is better than nothing)
- Absense of WiFi in rooms (it can be found in public areas but low-speed)
- Absense of vegetables & greens for breakfast (veggies are cheap on Madeira, it was strange not have them)
- Artificial yellow liquid called 'juice' served for breakfast

We actually liked the position up high as it’s a lot cooler than on the water front. My group appreciated the historic features of the property. Room was large, bathrooms due for a bit of a revamp but still functional
Nothing substantial. Yes it’s mildly annoying that the wifi is weak unless on the terrace or in the lobby. Otherwise for the price and location it’s fine. Did expect at least a ceiling fan

exterior is amazing, price is good.
worst experience I’ve personally had. owners were controlling. wanted time to always leave my key, apparently for cleaning reasons. but even at 10PM, they wanted it when we went to get water. the 2 male workers, I think one being the owner were so strange. I honestly felt uncomfortable with them there. they were constantly asking why we were doing things; why we were leaving, staying, paying with this credit card, it was so strange. Every night they asked us to be back at midnight. it’s Europe, we stay up late. awful experience.

The staff are amazing people. Very helpful and polite. The view is absolutely beautiful and we had some live music too. The location is good but you do have to walk uphill about 15 mins to get to the hotel if you’re not driving.
This hotel offers the bare minimum. The pillows are super flat and the switch’s are hanging out. The wifi is basically non existent. It could be a really amazing hotel but it needs a good fix up.

Good size room with comfortable bed and great views over Funchal. The hotel has a lovely terrace at the front to enjoy breakfast in the morning or a drink at night from the bar, listening to Edith Piaf again with fantastic views over the city. Helpful, friendly staff with very attentive barman.
The hotel is a bit dated inside and there was a slight odour coming from the bathroom. The selection for breakfast was a bit limited but despite this we did enjoy our stay. It is situated up the hill from the marina which means a steep walk up but also provides the great views.
