Just a heads up people traveling to Canada and the Province of British Columbia on the west coast in 2024 There has been unprecedented steps to stop Short Term Rentals and rentals less than 90 days. This small apartment is a fascinating place. The building dates back to between the wars and is furnished with old style furniture that is in keeping with the period. The huge north facing window lets in a lot of light for the sitting room and the remaining two outside walls have large fenestration that is also illuminating. Fortunately the plumbing fittings are modern but retro-styled to be of the same time period. The kitchen is small but fully equipped but I feel that you would need the skills of a rail-car chef to produce a large meal for several people. The shower I found to be challenging. The tub is an old claw foot cast iron or steel tub with rounded corners to the bottom. Standing in it I found to be unsteady. However we stayed for a month and became used to it after a few tries. We intend to return next year for a few winter months. Incidentally the heating in the winter was adequate and I loved the old cast iron radiators. Reminded me of my old red brick grammar school. The location is splendid. Local shopping available and downtown Victoria is less than 15min walk away.

Located in the heart of James Bay and within easy walking distance of Beacon Hill Park and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the apartment was spacious, charming and steeped in the history of one of Canada’s artistic icons. We loved our time there and would happily stay there again. Communication with the property manager was prompt and helpful. We’d recommend this stay without reservation.

The property was very well set up with everything that we needed. The apartment is beautifully furnished with antiques to reflect the age of the building and the period that it represented. The owner was very responsive and made our stay very easy. We loved the history with Emily Carr and had the opportunity to see the attic. Walking distance to downtown, close to parks and beaches. Will stay here again and highly recommend as a unique stay in Victoria.

Absolutely stunning historic suite. The light was so beautiful all times of day. Simple and tastefully furnished. Everything you need. We are going to book for next year immediately, I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. The location by Beacon Hill park and 2 blocks to the ocean, and 10-15 minutes to downtown (walking) was amazing.

Wow what an experience!
There's something to be said about staying at a historic and cultural significant place. Yes the outside is not at all what you would expect but the studio makes up for it. The light from the large north facing windows, the location to downtown and the Carr house, the horse trolleys that clop outside the window all add to the charm and personality of The House of All Sorts. Really is one of the most memorable places I've stayed at. The kitchen was fully stocked. Everything was super clean. I appreciate how the furnishing was in line with the era but has all the modern amenities one would expect. I highly highly recommend staying here if you have the chance.

The property was a great location. Enjoyed the history of Emily Carr. On your final night my daughter and I went to the attic. My daughter has told all her friends about her adventures. Yes she thinks Emily"s spirit is still in the house.

The studio at “The House of All Sort” will make you think of Emily Carr; you can also make an appointment to see the beautiful "Indian Eagles" she painted under the roof of the attic. The studio is spacious and full of charm, fantastic huge window in front of a giant tree with a view of the Parliament Buildings (magic lights in the nights). Very clean and comfortable in a fantastic location with everything to walk to.

Even that wonderful old library smell was incredibly comforting. This was one of the most beautiful and magical places we have stayed, not to mention the famous Emily Carr’s house of all sorts!
My husband and son stayed here for 2 nights and found it to be just what we expected - a look into history. From the huge window that overlooks the yard and beautiful cedar tree, to the mysterious attack doors above the shelving that piques your curiosity - this place was so unique!
Such an honour to stay here!
Would highly recommend if you’re ever in Victoria and want to be taken back into historic James Bay!

For those who love a heritage stay and value a good nights rest House of All Sorts is a must. Peter is an excellent, friendly and attentive host. The residents in the units below are quiet as is the street out front. The suite has a very cozy, homey vibe. The kitchen is the cutest you'll ever see. For those who appreciate lots of light there is no end to it here. Really unique architecture and floor plan feels like big English manor meets grandma's cozy cottage. Can't say enough about this place and can't wait to get back there again. Magickal!!!

The impressive "House of All Sorts"
The experience of staying in the historically significant home of Emily Carr was wonderful. The "Studio" is a clean and comfortable place to stay within the James Bay area. There is easy access to Beacon Hill Park, and the rest of Victoria. Peter has maintained the ambience of the original home, and was available to answer any questions regarding our stay and the history of the home. We definitely plan to stay here again. Thank you, Peter.

Wonderful vacation
The property was great. So close to the ocean, downtown and the park. We had a problem with the lock (just a misunderstanding on how to use it) Peter got back to us promptly and we solved the issue. One morning we bumped into Peter at the house and he let us see the attic where Emily Carr lived and painted. Very cool to see. One thing to consider, there was no hair dryer. Overall a wonderful stay.

Wonderful, spacious and full of charm
We loved our stay here. The space, amenities and layout are excellent. As we had to work online much of the time, we benefited from the different rooms. The sense of history is also great and we felt very lucky to get a firsthand glimpse into the life and inspiration of Emily Carr. The location is perfect: right in James Bay, a stone’s throw from Beacon Hill park, short walk from the water and Thrifties grocery store. In short, it was wonderful.
