This is a fantastic place to stay. Beautiful room, comfortable bed and in a great location.
Thankyou John for your welcome, and for letting us have our breakfast early so that we could catch the ferry.

Very comfortable, close to Wellington city center so you can walk from the guest house. Nice continental breakfast as well. John is a very nice kiwi guy who likes to talk with all the customers.

Unique and comfortable
Nice old house with antique charme
Clean
Good quiet area but really close to central city
Free parking
Tea and coffee free around the clock
Free laundry
The headpiece of the bed was the kind that is not attached to the bed itself, I would have preferred a more sturdy one, but that might be personal preference. Other than that everything was great!

Good location, an easy 15 minute walk down to the waterfront, Te Papa Museum etc. We arrived very late due to delayed ferry but the owner arranged that we could let ourselves in and tiptoe to our room. He also gave us a parking permit so that we could park on the road outside, which was great. Unlike most bland, corporate-looking accommodations, the GH is full of nice furniture and interesting antiques, very colourful. Very comfortable bed and our bathroom looked very new, with an excellent shower. Lots of places to eat nearby and a fantastic old cinema (The Embassy). Good value for money

Great location close to town. On street parking available directly outside property, parking permit provided by host. Our host John was very welcoming and helpful - thank you very much. Room and all amenities were excellent- breakfast very nice. Would highly recommend.
Everything perfect.

Location is close to the cricket ground and buses
Very run down. Shower was changing temperature from too hot to cold. Dirty TV remote control. Room smelt of mould and damp

We enjoyed our stay at the Richmond Guest House and its location was the key factor as we had come done for the cricket test against Australia and it was only a short walk to the Basin Reserve cricket ground. The Guest House was also conveniently located to Courtenay Place where there were plenty of restaurants although with the sold out cricket test all restaurants were pretty full and the place was alive. The test finished a day early so it meant we had one fullday to ourselves on a cold and wet Wellington day to explore.
Shuttle to the guest house from Wellington airport was only $24 for the two of us.
As far as the guest house facilities were concerned we had a large double room which was spacious with Sky TV and tea and coffee making facilities and our bed was very comfortable. Only one complaint was the room was very dusty with the walls and bedhead being very dusty and a sweep across these areas would be helpful to people who suffer from asthma and chest complaints.
John the proprietor was welcoming and very helpful when we had problems before we arrived with spam hitting the Booking.Com website and us receiving emails that our card was not valid and requesting us to provide details or our accommodation would be void if we did not pay. We immediately phoned John who said that he had had many similar experiences from other customers and told us not to pay until we arrived. John could be quite abrupt in his manner towards people but nowhere near as bad as some of the reviewers have said as we found him very chatty and likeable.
Very enjoyable stay.
Room needs a through dusting and vacuum as there was a coating of dust on the walls and behind and on the bedhead.
Otherwise perfect for a short stay

Location was excellent very clean and tidy and great value for money
Bed could have been bigger but that is probably because I'm used to a bigger bed

Loved the classic guesthouse vibe. John is an excellent host with a ton of stories. Breakfast was great. Our room was towards the back which made it very quiet - I felt at home immediately. It was also spotlessly clean and very spacious. We were able to park our motorcycles off the street in a small fenced area, but don’t count on this if you’re riding a big cruiser or dresser - it will be difficult to wriggle it and the corner in the small gap.
This is a very dense area so it can be difficult to park nearby if you are driving a car. However, due to the central location it’s a good place to base yourself if you are travelling on foot.

My room was tastefully period decorated with a view and en suite facilities and the location good with street side parking for the car in easy walking distance to town
The approach and manner of the owner manager. Forsook the breakfast to get away from the prevailing atmosphere

Was handy for the town
Bit dated surrounded by back packers accommodation bit loud shouting playing loud music
3.5 / 5.0
Super comfortable bed, in a bright & airy room, situated in a quiet, residential area of town. Easy access to the city centre, the harbour and Mt Victoria. Great value for money, and access to washing facilities. There was an option to use the shared kitchen, which had everything you needed.
We expected a little more from the breakfast, to be honest. It's sold as 'continental' but it's literally just toast and some cereal. Facilities were dated (like a gas cooker you had to light a match for), and staff weren't super clear on how to use the facilities (the washing machine took tokens, which we had to ask multiple times for).

Quiet property with quirky charm, feels very homely. Everything was clean and comfortable. Easily walked into center of Wellington.

Loved the Olde world charm of the place. John is a genial host. Everything is spotlessly clean. The continental breakfast is very generous and the location just can't be beaten.
3.0 / 5.0

Big room with enough place for our stuff. WIFI connection was good. Room and bathroom offered all we need. Host was friendly and gave us good explanations about the area. Parking was no problem.
Not all of the guesthouse was 100% clean. Furniture in the breakfast room is not in the best shape.

Good location.
The single bed did not have adequate bedding, just a sheet and a thin bedspread. Had to use towels for extra.
The owner was unfriendly. Told we needed to hurry up as there were a lot more people coming. Quite an odd experience.

Spacious, pleasant, clean, felt like home in the sixties.
John was a very kind and pleasant host. I defenitely recommend to stay here!
No shelves in order to empty the suitcases, but that is a general problem in hotels in New Zealand

Friendly host. Felt like home and gave me the experience of living in Wellington rather than staying at a hotel. Nice breakfast atmosphere in the mornings.

The web site for the Richmond Guest House provides a ‘what you see is what you get’ introduction. The host, John, prides himself on providing a refurbished ‘clean, fresh, quaint, charming and affordable’ two star bed and breakfast on Wellington’s doorstep. The restored two storey building is decorated in an idiosyncratic style with classical greek and roman motifs on the walls of the hallways that also have small tables with a variety of porcelain figures mostly reflecting those I’d expect in a house of the mid 20th century.
The dining room has its feature three substantial oriental figures featured on the guest house web site and a cabinet topped with smaller Christian figures. The rooms are simple and adequate with toilet and shower (with hot water and good pressure) and a cake of soap is provided. At night the building is whisper quiet, which I suspect is part of John’s careful management for the comfort of guests. Despite most guests arriving after us, we heard no noise at all during the night.
Included in the cost of the stay was a continental breakfast overseen by John. A wide variety of cereals were available. We had checked soon after arrival that no yoghurt was provided so we brought our own. John also made toast for us when we finished our cereal. There were many spreads available on each table in the breakfast room.
The Richmond Guest House is well situation for access to Wellington and surrounds. It provides two star accommodation at reasonable prices run by a host who aims to give customers value for money in his own style. We didn’t use the laundry or request a car parking sticker during our stay but these features are advertised as available and other reviewers have appreciated the provision of parking so close to town.
John supervises the continental breakfast also in idiosyncratic style. We were the only guests in the dining room during our breakfast period so we had John as a fourth person with us at breakfast from his vantage point at the breakfast bar. From the comments of other reviewers, women particularly seem to be at risk of being put off when addressed by John about contravening a house practice or two they didn’t know about. The lady of our party was non-plussed by a couple of comments over breakfast room etiquette that may have been John’s idiosyncratic sense of humour about his expectations of guest behaviour.
