The Big House at Stepladder Ranch offers the unique opportunity to escape into the hills of Cambria. The South Master Bedroom features a King size bed, and en suite master bath.

The Office also acts as a bonus sleeping space and features a sleeper sofa.

We were a group of 15 from all over the country, including 8 adults and 7 granddaughters aged 14-24. We have stayed in many VRBO properties for our reunions but all agreed this was pretty special. The central coast of CA is just plain gorgeous, and we got to enjoy the views and sunshine and access to the coast, with Hearst Castle, Cambria and San Luis Obispo close by. The house has AMAZING views - morning fogs, beautiful sunny days, gorgeous sunsets, unbelievable stars. We were on the patio as much as possible. The indoor common areas were wonderful - the kitchen is exactly what you want for 15 people. We could all be in one place but it didn’t feel crowded. The house was clean and comfortable and modern - we were able to do a little laundry when needed, and never missed AC or cell service (the WIFI was great). We loved being on a working farm - the cows were hilarious companions. Much commentary on the road in other reviews. To get to those views, it is a bit of a drive up - but if you go slowly, it wasn’t dangerous, just feels dramatic to us city folk, perhaps? Otherwise, we really loved our stay and felt like the management team was helpful and very communicative.

The minute we stepped into the property our shoulders relaxed and we honestly never wanted to leave. We brought up all our groceries for our family and did not leave for the first three days of our stay! The sunsets are breathtaking and the morning sounds of cows "mooing" was a delight. The game room kept everyone happy. We hope to stay here again in the future. Also highly recommend the creamery tour ( need reservations)...the goats brought smiles out of all of us and the cheese is amazing to take back and drink a bottle of rose. Thank you for the honestly best 5 full days of family time and memories that were made.

Awesome place. Loved all the rain and fog and little critters that came out. Loved all the nosey cows. Kids loved the game room. We loved the space. It was a great time.

Stepladder ranch is amazing and the big house is large enough for a family of 16+ lots of open space room to play games run around huge kitchen. Our only biggest complaint the whole time was that there were only seven forks in the entire home and after we checked out they brought an abundance of forks but during the stay they did not bring any forks which was frustrating but beyond that the house is great location is super fun. The video of the home showed a hot tub so we all brought suits to go in the hot tub and there was no hot tub.

This property is AMAZING!! While the first trip up the hill was scary…we all agreed it was well worth it. The home is perfect for a large group, the view was spectacular, and everything in the home was high quality making it a pleasure to stay in and cook, play family games, and make memories. I am already looking forward to making another trip!!

We stayed the weekend with our large family. It was perfect. We did not mind the drive up the hill and were appropriately advised of the remoteness.

Steppladder Ranch is an amazing place to say for those with large groups needing plenty of room. The accommodations are excellent with plenty of space to spread out. The views in the evening as the sun sets towards the coast cannot be beat!

Perfectly removed from the fast pace of the pre-holiday week, but not too far to make a run to town anything inconvenient. The home felt like a castle in the clouds. We loved it!

The Big House was amazing, with plenty of room for people to spread out and enjoy the views. The furnishings are very nice, and the big fireplace was very cozy. We would definitely rent here again.
The road up to the house is very rough—more so than we expected—so it’s really only passable for trucks or SUVs, in my opinion.

The home is generously accommodating. Beautiful surroundings. Perfect for a group of family and friends. The tour of the goats, kids and creamery was wonderful for the grandchildren and the cheese tasting was great fun for the adults. The road to the site was challenging due to recent rains but we all made it up one way or the other. Beach and Bay did not return urgent messages but we called the needed help in directly and got the propane delivered and the pilots all relit promptly.

Arrived April 16th. Because of major rain over the winter, the hills were spectacular. House is beyond wonderful. We were told that drive from Hwy 1 to "driveway" to house was a slow process and that is true. That being said, the driver must pay attention but the rest of us in the car kept oohing and aawing at the beauty. Would recommend that once you arrive, you stay.

We weren’t sure if we’d make it up to the house due to the weather but management communicated with us throughout and were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again! The house is perfect for big group gatherings.

We had four generations celebrating the holidays at the house and it was wonderful. The property itself is a challenge to get to with a scary drive up a dirt road along the side of a mountain, particularly scary at night and in the rain, but once there it was beautiful.

We brought our extended family together for a week. There were 16 of us total. We enjoyed the huge kitchen (especially the large griddle). The two dishwashers came in very handy.
Grocery shopping was a 2 1/2 hour expedition so plan wisely. Of course, we had to visit Hearst Castle which we enjoyed. We played ping pong, pool, and did puzzles at the house.
The sunset views of the ocean were breathtaking. At night, we could see the Milky Way as well as shooting stars on occasion.
We really loved the place and hated to leave!

The drive is definitely harrowing but WOW, what a view once you're up there. We spent every evening watching the sunset and stargazing out on the front patio.

California Coast Getaway
We stayed at the Big House with our extended family of 15. There were plenty of bathrooms, huge kitchen and dining table and a game room. Well appointed, 2 refrigerators, large stove with a grill top, propane grill. The views from the back deck are amazing. We all ate at the dining table together at night. The drive from highway 1 is long and rural and takes about 15 minutes. It is fun to see the farms, deer, cows, turkeys on the drive. The only downside is that you don't make "quick trips" into town or to the beach. More planning goes into an outing, as we only wanted to make the drive up and down 1 time a day. Would stay again.

Cambria Ranch
Just 5 miles away from the hustle-bustle of Cambria. Close enough to go wine tasting, elephant seal watching and shopping in town while remote enough to relax, chat and play games with family and or friends. Walks through the cow pastures and around the pig pen are fun for us city folk. Canyon and night sky views are incredible on clear days. This was our second stay at the ranch.

beautiful house, perfect for a family reunion or retreat
The house itself was beautiful and well-kept. However, the road to the property was much too tough to navigate, especially at dusk and at night. The fact that the VRBO listing keeps this fact completely hidden until 3 days before the rental, is not right. It is possible that someone may need to opt out of such a long, winding drive up to the property. The fact that there is no cell service immediately as soon as you turn from Hwy 1, is also a deterrent given that the road to the property is so winding and long .It is a dirt road up to the property and not all cars can be comfortable with this, without any access to help due to lack of cell service. Perhaps Beach-Bay Getaways can address this, or give their rental guests a note of what to expect, clearly.

Wonderful stay
No complaints- everything we wanted was there. The view is spectacular, the house is big and comfortable. Lots of history up there too. We look forward to coming again!

Spacious with amazing views
Would highly recommend this beautiful remote setting. Lots of wildlife en route! Fortunately weather was gorgeous so the road was not a problem but I can imagine it would be a little more treacherous during rain. Overall the home was in good condition but there were a few aesthetic issues, primarily with the flooring. There was only one “modern” tv in the game room which was by no means a deal breaker, especially if you are looking to unplug from technology and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Although we did make the trek into town everyday to explore and enjoy the beach and the quaint charm of Cambria, this location would be especially conducive to hunkering down and staying put. The views are unmatched and it was lovely to enjoy hawks flying at eye level and gorgeous views from every angle!

Amazing house with spectacular views.
Loved it and would highly recommend.
Suggestion: put lock on main hall bathroom. A little inconvenient with kids around.

Long getaway weekend for a group of close friends
The house and property was perfect for our group. Really enjoyed the kitchen and Great Room, for communal meal prep and dining. Nice hikes, beautiful sunsets, and star gazing that could not be beat (easily saw the milky way). Hope to come back!

Enough room for the extended family!
I was a little nervous on the first drive up the narrow road up the hill, but wow. It was worth it. Walks up to the yurt, the pug pen, “buzzard leap” kept the adventurers busy. We had enough room to accommodate all the gourmet cooks, and seating at the dining table for everyone.
We had grandparents to teens and all had the ability to join in the camaraderie or find solitude, and the wildlife entertainment was amazing. We pet the pigs. But, the best aspects were the spectacular vistas from every window and the temperate weather …in August! We will definitely come back.

Pleasant Surprise
The property pictures do not do the Big House justice. The home, property and views are amazing. The gourment kitchen is the best we have ever enjoyed for a family gathering. The game room was a big hit for everyone. We did not want to leave. We look forward to our next visit!
Thank you to our hosts for providing a wonderful memorable experience.

There’s a reason it’s called the Big House
This house was a pleasant surprise since I booked it last minute and didn’t have time to look up details before getting there. The house is huge with amazing views. Just make sure you get there during daylight and watch out fir the cows.

This property is amazing with some very nice hiking trials. There really is no need to leave the home to enjoy a nice well deserved vacation. The home was very clean and the views were breathtaking. I would definitely stay there again. If you love nature, look no more.

Beautiful home awesome views
The house is awesome lots of room for everyone. Loved the big recreation room upstairs with views all around. Would no bring the dogs back again. Be nice if they had a small grass area for the dogs to relieve themselves. To many prickly plants on the ground for them. Was sad to see the dog kennel outside of the house. I would not suggest putting any animal in there. Property manager was very nice and we enjoyed our stay.

Peaceful And Restorative Retreat
The house was a wonderful place to have our family retreat. Roomy and well appointed. We enjoyed all of the animals on the ranch; pigs, cows, wild turkeys, deer and even turkey vultures. However, we did miss seeing the goats at the creamery. We hope to come back.

We enjoyed everything about Stepladder ranch. From the daily hikes to the beautiful viewpoint at the top of the ridge, to the sunsets from the back patio. I highly recommend escaping the city and getting the nature therapy that the ranch provides.

A perfect getaway
If you want seclusion, breathtaking views, a perfect big house for 14-18, A jacuzzi, a game room, a huge kitchen and everything else you may need already there, except food, this is the place for you. The drive up can get a little bumpy on a dirt road With ruts but the end result is worth it. Bring enough food so you don’t have to leave and even if you do, like we did to go to Hearst Castle, it’s not that bad. Highly recommend. our 4 year old grandson said when he saw it, “it’s a mansion”!!!

Thanksgiving in Cambria
The description of the Big House was completely accurate. It may have even felt bigger than the photos! The massive kitchen and grill were a dream for cooking Thanksgiving dinner. The dog enjoyed the fenced in yard when it wasn’t raining. The rain offered us rainbows! We booked tours ahead of time at Stepladder Ranch and Creamery and Hearst Castle. Everyone in our family agreed that this was the perfect place to spend the holiday weekend together. Thank you!
