Lovely ryokan with exceptional service. Our rooms were very comfortable and clean and more recently reburbished than the public areas which were a little dated in a good way. The baths were great, particularly the rotenburo (outside baths). The staff were very kind and helpful and the kaiseki style dinner was delicious. Breakfast is Japanese only. Also delicious. Access to Kamikochi by public transport was very smooth.
Nothing.

Such an amazing place, I would always come back. Such an incredible Japanese experience, enjoy nice onsen and delicious food with an amazing service experience. Perfect

Friendly staff. The complimentary coffee in the lobby was good.
The hotel is fine but it’s a little worn and despite its name, it bears more resemblance to a hotel than a ryokan. I found it a little expensive for what you get, with better options at the price in the area.
You are not allowed to stay in the lobby past 11 a.m.
The breakfast was surprisingly ill prepared by Japanese standards, with the fish and beef having been fried and reheated in the microwave so was tough like rubber.
The dinner was fine, without being anything out of the ordinary and was very similar to the kind of kaiseki normally served in ryokans and minshukus. I ordered extra meat for grilling which came in only half-defrosted, so I sent that out again.
I am assuming the ‘outstanding experience’ reviews of the fare is by travellers with little experience in Japanese cuisine.

would stay longer, nice room, nice outdoor bath, great japanese dinner and breakfast, near bus stop, afternoon coffee and snacks, good place, if you want to visit shin hotaka ropeway

Very beautiful spot. Service was wonderful. Staff were exceptional.
It was a bit out of the ways. The busses typically came around each hour.

The hotsprings was amazing! There's private onsen rooms to use that look gorgeous. The breakfast and dinner were delicious and a must try!
The location is deep in the mountains so plan ahead on how to get there.

Simply amazing. Possibly the best accommodation in Japan during our two weeks trip. The place makes you feel like being in the ancient Japan. The private onsens are marvelous and the breakfast is more of an unforgettable experience than some food. Absolutely recommended
Arriving by public transport is a bit difficult (normally only one bus per hour and almost 1.5 hrs trip from Takayama) but not impossible. And, this is part of the magic of the place

It was a pleasant stay. The room met our needs and enjoyed the onsen that included option for a private one as well at no additional cost. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast, both of which were enjoyed and served local cousine.
Perhaps better mattresses or option for queen size bed. Wi-fi was at times found to be spotty.

wonderful traditional Japanese rooms, enjoyed the on-site meals, and the private onsen was awesome. staff also wonderful, pleasant, and accommodating.
the wifi went in and out

- We loved the options of the public and private onsens. The outdoor private ones were also very clean! We only wished we could’ve used it in the morning as well but it seems they close for cleaning before check out
- The breakfast was delicious! We enjoyed our dinner out the night before, but were curious how the hotel dinner would’ve been since breakfast was so tasty
- Spacious room and comfortable beds, loved the seating area by the big window and view of all the trees
- Within walking distance of a delicious cafe/restaurant, you should check out: Yotsuba
- Everything was clean
- Friendly staff, who even helped me carry our bags in while my partner parked the car
- We are already looking for a reason to visit again! A great value, especially in comparison to other places in the same Okuhida area
- A very small complaint but there’s only one chair in the seating area by the window for the room. Its probably meant to be big enough to share but goodness knows we couldn’t fit on there together, so I wish there had been another available chair
