Booked a one night stay for birthday trip away, first time in this hotel. Our privilege room was on the top floor with nice view of the cathedral, it was spacious & comfortable the bed was big & particularly comfy & I had a great sleep. Large tv, fridge, good coffee, nice toiletries, robes & slippers all made for a very enjoyable stay. Room was a bit cold on arrival but we plugged in electric heater & it warmed up super quick. I would agree with other reviewers that the hotel it’s self needs a refurb yes paint work was a bit marked & chipped & the window catches were certainly passed their best, the window sill area was all a bit scruffy looking & the table top particularly marked & very much in need of replacement. However the room & bathroom were spotlessly clean so no complaints there from us. Breakfast was a very pleasant experience, good selection of hot & cold food, pastries, cereals, fruit etc the coffee machine takes forever as does the toaster but we weren’t in a hurry so didn’t cause us any issues. All in all a good time was had by us.

Hotel parking was a nightmare we have a disabled badge but this made no difference.parking spaces were sealed off apparently for the use of staff but were empty,so disappointing start to the holiday.

Ok stay. But room was not available at 1500 hrs as advertise, but half hour later ( apparently previous guests did not vacate on time ).
Given it is an old property, condition is pretty good !

Staff friendly, clean room although bathroom needs updating as does the carpet in bar area. Got lucky with the parking to our relief and the close proximity of the hotel to the centre is great. The biggest bug bear of our stay was the price of a bottle of wine at £36.00 that costs £16.00 in Tesco. The cost of the stay was expensive also.

Staff were friendly. Great location. Room/bathroom just a bit tired. Shower wasnt great.

Ideally situated in center of town. Loads of car parking around

This is our second booking this year, so the hotel must be doing something right! We like the easy parking, friendly and relaxed welcome and good sized rooms. The location is perfect for a weekend break exploring Winchester.

Lovely over night stay with the added perk of a cathedral view. Paid extra for a slightly larger room which was worth it. Only negative was online it stated £15 for late checkout but I was charged £20.
Great location especially if you’re going to the Xmas market.

Very uncomfortable bed, left over food found in drawers on arrival, duvet was lumpy

Really good place to stop in central Winchester

Heating wasn’t on in my room so used convector that was in wardrobe. Shower was hit and miss with hot water

Room was clean with a tv with many Channels, kettle, heater, fan, iron, towels and extra pillows. Bed was very comfy. Breakfast was great, had a bit of everything, was hot and tasty and was being refilled to keep products available. Only one issue which isn’t with the hotel but feel should mention, there is not much parking. ‘Hotel parking’ is also for pay display general public. The parking spaces out front are also very small, you wouldn’t be able to open the door at all to get out of a couple of the spaces leaving them pointless. Spaces in the back car park past travelodge are normal size if you can get one.

Very friendly staff on reception. Efficient check in, room and bar were good and bed was comfortable. One or two parts could do with some upgrading, but overall a good hotel. Location is great in the centre of the city.

We came to Winchester to visit my daughter, she’s at the university. Hotel was central to the city, parking nearby. Room was clean and comfortable. Receptionist was very friendly. Would definitely stay her again.

This is the first time when I found myself disappointed with the Wessex Hotel. The food was not super - the batter around the fish was soggy and when removed it was a task to find the fish :-( After a long journey I was super tired to retreated to my room early, only to find the bed sheet was not clean and did not look changed. Reception provided another room - though of course I had to repack my belongings and move myself. This experience is not typical of the Wessex, so my surprise and disappointment were evident. The hotel location is super in the heart of Winchester, and is not a budget hotel. But perhaps this was my last stay at the hotel.

The room was not ready at 3pm and when we did eventually get in it was not as clean as you’d like . The bathroom sink in particular was very dirty . The hotel is dated and could do with a complete revamp

Great position. Parking could be better. Staff excellent. Large comfortable room. All interior facilities could do with freshening up.

First class service and attention to detail. Although the decor is a bit dated it was clean and comfortable. Great location.

Mercure Wessex is an older boutique style hotel offering amenities such as restaurant and bar among others.
While it is an older hotel/building the location of the Mercure is excellent! Right on the corner of Hight St with all of the great shopping and food options and steps away from the Winchester Bus station the hotel has an. incredibly convenient location

The hotel is well situated just off the high street, we managed to park on site, which was a bonus. The hotel was clean but fixtures and furnishings was very out dated and worn. The reception staff were nice and pleasant but we didn’t eat or drink in restaurant so cannot comment on that. The room was very spacious with lovely view of the cathedral but as mentioned before room needs a make over!

Good room and bed.
Choice of menu in the evening very limited. Mostly burger type food so didn’t use the dining room. Realise that it is off season and the hotel very quiet so, unfortunately, no atmosphere in the bar which we also didn’t use.

Staff very nice! Felt very welcome! Very clean! Warm and comfortable. Just need to modernise rooms and upgrade corridors. Some carpets patchy and stained. Some lights not working!
But breakfast was great and service was excellent!
Thank you.

Staff were welcoming, friendly and very attentive. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good; I enjoyed my porridge which was made as soon as requested. The bar area had very pleasant staff and a very relaxing atmosphere. This is one of the best hotels I have stayed at.

Gorgeous front of house Magdelaina was perfect.
What a skill she had of interacting with customers on a real personal level. Knowing how to converse with different clientele at different occasions is a unique personality trait which so many do not have. First class. Thank you.

Nice hotel... lovely city..
The only complaint I could have was that the television in my room wasn't up to scratch... neither was the remote control!!
2.0
The hotel overall is really dated.
The TV in my first room didn't work and so I had to walk all the back to reception just to move 2 doors away.
In the new room the hot water tap in the bathroom wasn't fixed to anything so when you tried to turn it on, it just twisted and twisted.
The room was very hot with no air con, and so I had to get a fan to try and cool things down.
There was a shower over a bath, which makes no sense unless your one of the weird ones who like taking baths in hotels.
Think I'd rather stay in the travelodge next door.

Location is very central, hotel lobby is fine, room was nice and tidy but a little tired, bathroom needs updating however it did have a de-misting mirror. No air-con but it did have a good fan and the windows can be opened as well which I prefer anyway. Door lock for our room happened to be dodgy and needed fixing (didn’t unlock and yes it was our room), the night time staff (a lovely gentleman at the reception) was super helpful. The view outside the window was on the street side this time and some building work was happening opposite the hotel. The bed was comfortable so we had a good night sleep despite someone singing their heart out and some loud bin noises happened briefly which both are uncontrollable circumstances by the hotel.
Overall I would stay there again if I found a cheaper rate for street side room or if it was facing the cathedral side.

We booked for location to meet up with friends. We have stayed before but over the last 30 years nothing seems to have been upgraded. Furniture was very dated and bed not very comfortable. We even got upgraded to an executive room but with the mass of trees outside the room was dark and no view. Having said that we were only there for 1 night and it suited our purpose. The receptionist was very cheerful and made us feel welcome. The Wessex could do with a total upgrade in my opinion though!

It was clean, however, it is an old building so all the taps, plugs etc are d. Very old fashioned but comfy. Terrible access to car park. Breakfast was 6 out of 10
