It was OK. Too bad the restaurant was closed.

We only stayed one night on a family road trip. Our two double beds room was not in the main building facing the ocean but two streets away, which was not clear at booking. We did not expect a room with ocean view but was disappointed about the location. Room needs renovation. Wall paper and sitting chair torn with holes. Beds extremely squeaky, one of them unstable. Below 3 star standard. Restaurant and bar closed. We had great breakfast and coffee at the nearby Goodlife Café & Bakery.
The hotel has great potential with its amazing location but needs major renovation.

Great view from the balcony. Has a lot of character. Restaurant is closed. No elevator if you’re in need of one. They are remodeling in September. Will stay again after remodeling is completed. Great little town. Beach within walking distance. Overall a great experience.

We booked this hotel for our wedding anniversary celebration. We were disappointed. This hotel is tired and has seen better days. I heard it was being shut down in September 2024 for renovations - I hope they implode it and rebuild it. Because other than the view, the room was old and uncomfortable with a fully rusted door and nails popping-up on the splintering balcony. The staff that I saw were relatively nice and friendly. There is a coffee bar, but that’s it, and it’s closed strictly at 10am; I would’ve thought I would get more for what I paid. Alas, they are charging 4 star prices for a 1 star experience.

Our room was clean and fairly comfortable but the carpet, furniture and paint needs to be upgraded
3.8
The hotel sits mostly stagnant while awaiting renovation slated for 9/2024. The restaurant and bar are permanently closed. We were there for 4 days without housekeeping service despite using the hang tag asking for the room to be serviced. It’s a great location and has great potential, but not worth the daily rate in its current condition and operating environment.

This hotel may well be the best value in Mendocino. The bed was comfy and the room had the amenities "advertised." The staff is fabulous, and to their credit, they do the best they can with the hand they are dealt. That said, if you stay here, keep your expectations low. This hotel is in dire need of some maintenance. I was told that a complete overhaul is in the future, but in the interim, it appears that ownership has determined to invest absolutely nothing in providing current guests a modicum of aesthetic pleasure. The wallpaper and paint in my room was peeling badly. There were multiple holes in the walls from previous fasteners (or wall art?) that the hotel made no effort to cover. Overall, this place looks tired on a good day, and when considered with the historic portraits staring down at me from the walls, could feel downright creepy to some.

This was our second time here. We love the porch and the Old-fashion feel of the place.
3.8
The place is adorable but the bed was terrible; please get new mattresses!

The hotel was rundown. Wallpaper peeling. Furniture needing to be recovered. Bed was clean, but uncomfortable. The stairs were steep and scary to climb to the third floor. The second floor had while we banisters on the staircase. The beds and the luxury room was so high you couldn’t get into it. The bed in our original room was loose and almost folded up on us. And the top of it was so close to the slanted ceiling that you could bump your head if you went to get out of the bed. There was absolutely no privacy on the patios. The window frames were cracked with peeling paint. No refrigerators in any other room so you couldn’t even bring in drinks without bringing your own ice chest. We originally booked a room with a balcony. We could not stay in it because of the bed condition and the steep stairs. They moved us to a luxury suite for the same price, but the bed was so high you couldn’t get in it. We were then move to a regular king bed and it is where we slept the bed was clean but uncomfortable. And the suite that we were in was two grades down according to the service manager, and yet we could not get a refund our credit for the difference in the price. I tried to call Hotels.com and they didn’t respond with an answer to whether or not they would be able to give me a credit or a refund either.

An easy stop for a day in Mendocino. The place is in need of an update but we understand a major renovation/repair is coming soon.
3.8
Cool property but in dire need of updates and maintenance! The bones are there but it needs some TLC the restaurant was completely out of commission but was told they have plans to redo and reopen
3.8
Worst hotel we’ve ever stayed in 4 decades of travel. Falling apart, worn out, rusty and dirty.
3.8
Great older hotel with our buildings with additional rooms. A bit dated but still charming. Unfortunately restaurant and bar had been closed for a year or more and are slated for renovations later this year. Would have been great to have these active and have an active lobby scene.
3.8
Mendocino weather: fog in am, some sun in afternoon. Shops all open and great fun, especially Highlite Gallery, the bookstore and bakeries. People are friendly!! A great old hotel in a spectacular town.
3.8
Management oversight was terrible. No TV controller. Promises Presto Log for fire place was not there. Shampoo and body wash dispencers were empty. The only heat was a small oil heater that resulted in a very cold room. All in all, a very bad booking.
3.8
This hotel has beautiful lobby & gardens & the bed was comfortable but rooms need upkeep maintenance. I sure hope they do some up keep on walls, floors drapes cosmetic things could make a big difference.

We come here alot. A favorite. Just pay attention to when things close.

Very Nice location and friendly front desk staff. The Mendocino Hotel has lost its luster an is badly in need of an upgrade. We stayed in a garden suite which had a strong moldy smell, it was very cold and had no thermostat, only a portable heater; we brought some food from a restaurant, left if out for a couple of hours and when we went to eat it it was full of ants. This used to be a wonderful hotel, unfortunately it no longer is.

Hotel apparently had new owners and they need to renovate the property, including new bed mattresses!
3.8
Old hotel with that said it’s old feel is its charm. Affordable and needing some TLC.
Walking to everywhere is a plus too.

I would not stay here again. I booked via Expedia, its list of facilities is woefully out of date. There is no food or drink available on site, the tea and coffee in the communal area is over the road and only available for a few hours in the morning. The property may well have been built in the late 1800s the cobwebs hanging from the ceiling help to authenticate this. The bed mattress has been upgraded since Victorian times but probably only the once. It’s a fight to sleep in the middle as the edges have no support and you roll out of the side. I booked a queen size bed but it seemed like a standard double, although I didn’t have a tape measure to check. It would have been nice to have a bedside table on both sides of the bed, we had to make do with an upturned drawer. On positive note the bathroom was nice and bright. The shower head was intended for Victorian guests as it was only 5’6” high and the hot water flow miserably poor.

Did not like anything about the property for advertisement Very sad to see what they’ve done with the place

Reasonably close to town, but requires a walk.

The staff especially Angel was amazing. They really made this stay great. The Mendocino area is wonderful and the hotel was centrally located and perfect for visiting.
3.8
A perfectly reasonable priced quaint hotel in a romantic fallen down town. All of it vibrates California history and charm. Lobby is wonderful.
3.8
Rooms were quiet and quaint.
3.8
The hotel is in terrible shape. Our room had torn curtains and there is mold in the window panes.
The steps to the room had dry rot with holes. Definitely a hazard.

Great stay

I liked the renovation of old 1850s properties into comfortsble, affordable rooms

Rooms need to be updated. Rooms are very cramped.

Second stay at this hotel. The first visit was wonderful, this one ... the room seemed run down, and there was no heat, space heater and the quick start fire logs that were offered were no help. It made the evening very uncomfortable.
3.8
The location is great, but the maintenance on the property appears to have been neglected for YEARS. Sadly it’s not as nice as it once was.
3.8
This a very old hotel of course but it could definitely use some tlc. The price was reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for!

This hotel needs some love. It was okay but nothing special (even though it should be, given its historic nature.) I did hear that they are going to close for a year for renovations starting in July.
The main hotel lobby is beautiful and original, but dusty/could use a good cleaning (floors, furniture). The hotel is actually several different buildings so I can't speak to the quality of the rooms in the main building. Our room in a building a block up was just ok. It could use fresh paint, a new mattress and new bedding (one thin blanket and two flat pillows). It was clean enough (it didn't give me the willies) but really in need of updating/refreshing. We didn't pay a lot for two nights so that helped make up for it.
The hotel could be a real gem, I imagine the pandemic was probably not very good for business. I hope they can bring it back to life!

Awesome place we have stayed many times. Had an awesome view room to watch the sun rise & set. Beautiful
3.8
the front desk staff was super helpful and kind to us last night! thank you!
3.8
My only complaint was that online information was not accurate. They need to update. The restaurant and bar are closed. They do not provide a towel change and room cleaning during your stay unless you ask for it.
3.8
Despite the hotel being practically empty, they put us in a room in the annex with creepy haunted children photos on the walls (all good, easily covered with towels). But our toilet ran constantly, the fan didn't work in our bathroom so we had to keep the door open, and they don't regularly change the batteries on their smoke detector so it BEEEEEPED at one minute intervals all night long. Seriously, every minute, on the minute from 11pm until the next morning. No sleep was had.
When I mentioned to the front desk lady in the morning, she was great about it and offered a refund. But she told me I'd have to initiate through Expedia, then they would call the hotel and the hotel would confirm. Well, I did that. But when Expedia called the hotel they refused the refund, even with several tries.
Mendocino is an adorable town, but stay elsewhere.
