authentic looks, vintage, very special, great location, good staff
small room, not even a two chairs for bags

The decor was nice and the location was excellent -- walkable to everywhere in town.
The room needs a thorough cleaning and update. Wallpaper was peeling in the vanity area, some mildew in the tub area. New paint and wallpaper would do wonders.

Such a quirky place! Absolutely loved it. It felt like we were traveling on an old timey train out west! The shared bathrooms are probably not for everyone, but we didn't mind and felt like it was part of the experience! Would absolutely stay again. Also the location is unbeatable, right in town, incredible views.
The bathrooms were a little musty, but honestly what can you expect with such an antique place! Didn't bother us. Just remember to bring your own slippers perhaps.

It’s weird eccentric old style is fun to look at. The location is great.
The walls are paper thin and you hear everyone in all the rooms of both floors snoring and talking all night long: you can hear full conversations. Sharing a bathroom was a nuisance, we had a bathroom hog. The room was so hot all night and the thermostat didn’t do anything, the bed was very uncomfortable and the room was tiny as a box.

The ocean view
The room was antiquated. Some of the furniture was broken or stained . The wallpaper was peeling. One of the windows would not latch shut creating a security problem.

Location. Main hotel on the bay
We were not located in main hotel. Had to carry bags down side of hotel across a road through a parking lot and upstairs. Room smelled very musty. Cold - had to adjust thermostat and wait- still had to sleep in a sweater. Only one brown dingy blanket on beds. Beds hard as a rock - woke up with backache. Couldnt get ancient coffee machine to produce hot water and had to move it onto a dresser to find a plug. No chairs to sit at table. Would have had to move sofa to watch tv. Restaurant was closed. Will not even think of staying here again.

Room was comfy, clean, and well appointed. Loved the Victorian period detail and the old fashioned phone. The period furnature, lighting, and carpet super cool.

Very central location, old world charm, clean and comfortable.
Walls paper thin.

"Old school" charm. Comfortable seating when not sleeping. Walking distance to everything in town.
The bed was a a little firm for me but acceptable.

close to the town, very clean
room was very small

In the main lobby, the vintage/antique details are lovely! The rooms have actual keys, and the property has tried to stay relevant to the period the hotel was founded which I appreciate. the staff were all friendly and helpful!
We stayed in the garden suites so I can’t speak to the rooms in the main hotel. Our room smelled like old things - difficult to describe, but like old carpet and old upholstery that holds smells. Some of the furniture was period appropriate, but some of it wasn’t and just looked and felt old and outdated rather than well done, purposely antique details. the fireplace tiles (redone) we’re cracked, and the bathroom was dated rather than “classic.” The bed was not comfortable, and the pillows were too full and stiff. There needed to be more pillows for sleeping other than the king sized shams that are difficult to sleep on.

location was right in town .Easy walking distance to all restaurants and shops , as well as waterfront just a couple blocks away .
Very deceptive picture of hotel vs actual rooms . We went to hotel only to find out the restaurant and bar were closed and that our room was not in hotel ,but rather in decrepit old building in back parking lot . The only view was of a bush in window that looked out to parking lot . The room was clean but very dated at best . We had to make reservations with only a few days notice , so we took what we could get . Would never consider staying here again . The guy who check us in could not of looked less interested in helping us find the place we were to stay or asking us if we had any questions . " you are not staying in hotel , go up street to water tower and take right turn . The rooms are back behind in a parking lot " . "Ok , thanks "

The location was great--within easy walking distance of the shoreline, shops, and restaurants. The staff were friendly and accessible. Checkin and checkout were simple. The balconies on the second floor are great when the weather is pleasant.
The hotel has "great bones" as they say, but could really use some attention. The wallpaper and carpets are worn and the shower door could be replaced. On the whole the hotel feels a bit tired for the price we paid through booking.com, which was nearly double the normal rate. The photos on Booking were not a fair representation of our actual room. The "queen" sized bed was actually a double. Given that it was winter and we had no control over the thermostat, we were rather cold overnight.

The location is the best in Mendocino. Sitting on the balcony watching both sunrise and sunset is priceless. And the authentic decorations from old days make this a different experience that you don’t forget.
The room was a bit small and the bed not big enough for two adults.
Wi-Fi was unstable.

Staff was great, Hotel is still beautiful and in a great location.
No mention that the bar, restaurant are both closed, the fireplace in lobby is out of order (?????) no housekeeping! It’s very very very bare bones at the moment. NOT at all like my last stay. New owners take note!!!

great location!
we only had HOT water. They had us shower in another room. Not at all convenient though doable. Coffee pot did not work.
Ownership is under change so much work needs to be done on this place.
