I stayed at the hotel twice and had a wonderful experience both times. Lovely place to stay in San Jose.

We made a reservation a month in advance but when we arrived we found the hotel overbooked !! We the had to wait for s shuttle to take is to a B grade hotel with no hot water ! It was am unpleasant experience. Why could they not have emailed is in advance, to let is know that are room was no longer available!

Here’s your revised review that follows the guidelines:
The worst experience I’ve had at a hotel. I prepaid a month in advance through a booking app, and when I arrived, I was told there were electrical issues on the floor I was assigned. The hotel had arranged a room for me at a different property, claiming it was just as nice and had comparable amenities. That was far from the truth. The alternate room was not equivalent in quality, and the experience felt like a significant downgrade. When I raised the issue, Barceló refused to offer any compensation, stating there was nothing they could do. I also spent an hour on customer service with the booking platform trying to resolve the issue, but received no meaningful support. After a full day of travel, I was left feeling frustrated and completely unsupported by both the hotel and the booking platform.
tldr; poor customer service, very disappointing experience.

The worst hotel experience I’ve had. It started with the hotel not showing up with the airport shuttle although we had booked well in advance. When I called to let them we know were waiting the just said it might in 25 min. We decided to take a taxi instead.
When we arrived at the hotel the receptionist hardly greeted us and after we’ve handed over our passports we were informed that “something” had happened at the hotel and we had to move to a new hotel. We were then transferred to the new hotel but the driver dropped us off at the wrong place so we had to walk to the new hotel. The new hotel was not even close in terms of standard and was just awful…. All this after 30h of travel. Will never consider this hotel again.

We enjoyed our short stay. Out flight left early in the morning, so we really appreciated the take-away breakfast and airport shuttle service. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Good hotel for a good price.

TV had to be repaired. Room phone did not work for rooms service orders. Maid came knocking at 8:30am to see if had checked out. She should be in touch with her management team, and not disturb us.

Everyone in the hotel was extraordinarily kind and helpful. I got sick and hotel staff made a bad situation totally fine. I’m grateful to everyone at the welcome desk, the concierge and the wait staff. The slogan for Costa Rica is La pura vida. Staff couldn’t have been kinder!

Beautiful old building, could use with some renovations but nothing major. Attention to detail was a little lacking. They usually forget about basic toiletries like hand soap or coffee for the machine, but if you call the front desk they solve it fairly quickly.

Despite being a gold member(qualifying me for room upgrades) and typically receiving room upgrades at other hotels, a lady with glasses at the front desk informed me that I would need to pay for an upgrade, even though rooms were available.

The hotel room is good. They don't get us from airport even though they said it is available. It cost us extra money

Check-in was a breeze at 0130 am. We had a decent room with a large balcony on the first floor. The bed was comfy and the amenities were very basic. Due to housekeeping issues, we were later moved to a suite, which we appreciate. The very spacious suite also had a comfy bed, but this time with L'occitaine brand amenities. The Poas Suite has a much smaller veranda than our first room, but we thoroughly enjoyed it! The grounds around the hotel are gorgeous! The pool is NOT heated and was too cold to get in, but it was very enjoyable to sit around in the hammocks provided. There is also a lush garden with a walking path to see the local flora that has labels with the names of the plans for educational purposes. The small gym has various equipment as well as a jacuzzi for about 6 people. The men's and women's dressing rooms both have a wet and dry sauna as well as showers and bathrooms. I thought the hotel itself was a bit old-looking but was still very nice.
The service of the hotel was most lacking. The carpeting of the hallway leading to our room always needed a vacuum. The housekeeping of the rooms was never consistent - sometimes they would throw the trash, sometimes not. Used toilet paper rolls and face tissue boxes were not replaced. The front desk staff tried to be as accommodating as possible but were never very friendly. The staff at Anfora restaurant were not attentive.
YORLENY - from the omelet station was an absolute gem.

This is the worst hotel I have stayed at in a very long time. The staff are not at all attentive. I sat at breakfast 7 days in a row and not once was I ever covered a napkin or coffee.
The complete hotel is run by 15 year olds with a chip on their shoulder.
The whole hotel smells damp and moldy.
I’ll never stay here again.

The front desk staff and dining staff were very welcoming. The room had only one towel for 3 guests. We had to continuously ask for towels and wash cloth which took over 24 hrs to receive any.

This hotel used to be the premier business place in CR back in 2003 when I first stayed here, Since then, it now caters less to business patrons and more to the international travel crowd. the hotel is very classic with lots of rich wood tones and great landscaping. the pool is nice and clean, and the staff super friendly. The breakfast buffet is very nice with many options available. Unfortunately, it's starting to show its age and the rooms could use an upgrade, especially the showers. Over all it's a great bargain.

Great Staff and clean.

Overall, the quality of the building and rooms are great . However, we arrived a couple of hours early and were told we could not check in until 14:00. We had expected to wait but when we returned to check in, our rooms were still not ready. We waited another hour and a half but the rooms still hadn't been cleaned. Finally, one of our rooms were ready. About an hour and a half later, the other room had been cleaned so I checked in. There were no towels so I had to wait another hour for those. When we suggested a free breakfast for the inconvenience, we were told no, just free coffee.
I was very satisfied with the quality of the room excluding some minor irritations. For example, the bath door is on the opposite side of the faucet so you have to get in the tub to turn on the water. There's no mechanism to lift the drain plug so you have to try to pry it back up with your bare hands. The remote for the TV was not entirely functional and the TV doesn't include any streaming options. Also, one of the locks on thw door gets stuck. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to get it to open again. There was a slight opening in the window that I could not get to shut entirely so outside noise filtered in more. And, the cordless phone did not work. Like I said, these are all minor irritants except for the check-in situation.
Room service food was subpar. Also, when I ordered, whoever picked up just put the phone down, not on hold, without even greeting me.

My stay at the hotel was pleasant my only complaint is the communications through the app to book airport to hotel transportation wasn’t successful the hotel never got the messages .

Classic ambience, garden surroundings, great staff, good retaurants. However property and rooms need some updates

Some nice things: The rooms and property were comfortable and clean, albeit dated in their style. The evening live pianists were wonderful. The on-sight gardens and pool were lovely. The staff was generally very nice to us.
A few noteworthy cons:
(1) The main restaurant was frustrating. With few diners, you might wait 10 minutes or 40 minutes for the same order. One night they're out of pizza (1/4 of the menu). No French onion soup. They're out of salad dressing (!) tonight, but here's the $20 salad you ordered anyway. There was a buffet one night, but they don't know when it's coming back. Oh, now there is a buffet but it's only for this tour group. There's no predictability to these things, and the hotel is isolated so you're out of luck finding other stuff. To pay for the food you go to a plexiglass-walled bank-teller window, give your room number again (you gave it on arrival), and despite all the room-tracking they still don't know that you're reservation was supposed to include a food discount.
(2) There is a strange VIP lounge on the top floor that our reservation gave us access to. There's always someone working there to take your room number. There are some finger food, coffee machine, etc. Don't you dare try to take a banana or a coffee cup out of that small area to consume in your own room. Not allowed. What about a tea bag and a paper to-go cup? Could I take that out of the VIP area? After a solemn pause for consideration, I was told "yes."
(3) Horrible Wi-Fi

My room wasn't ready in time and they didn't pick me up at the airport, even though they said they would. I waited 30 minutes extra and after calling them, they would say that they were coming in 20, always. I also saw small cockroaches in the bathroom at night. Other than that it's a beautiful place.

Booked a two bed (queen) room 3 months ahead of time and showed up to a room with only a king and small tiny bed next to it. I spoke up to the ladies in the front and they said the hotel was full so they gave my room away. I asked why and they said they had too give my room away since it was full and had no regard to my booking even if it was booked months in advance. We were a family of four and it made things difficult. Super disappointed in this property and hotel. That is no way to treat someone’s reservation! Especially 4 in one room!

The staff were friendly and accommodating. The rooms were comfortable and the pool was our favorite part. It’s a great place for families.

The hotel is centrally located and in a safe area of San Jose.
We did not use the dining facilities since we visited family.
The rooms are a bit dated but very clean and functional—nice quality sheets and towels. There is a safety deposit box, fridge, coffee maker, and minibar. The in-room coffee and bottled water are free of charge and replenished daily.
In the evenings there is live piano music. The hotel atmosphere is refreshing and peaceful. Definitely will visit again.
