Lovely atmospheric pub with rooms right at the northern edge of the historic central district. The room was a nice size, but no really good place to put the luggage I was living out of. Mugs for hot beverages, but no glasses. Be aware: no washcloths. Bring your own if you need one.

Good central location. Walking distance to everything. 31 Rooms in various parts of historical building and annexe at reasonable prices. Good food service and atmospheric pub.

This place is ok, well placed near the centre of town. It was my second stay here; the first time I had a perfectly nice quiet room towards the back of the building. This time I was in Room #1 which is directly above the bar area and very noisy. I was told the hotel was full and there were no other vacant rooms. If you do stay here, try to ascertain which room you will be given. Otherwise it was fine, I particularly liked the rain-head shower.

Room itself (no 17) was clean and pleasant. Very noisy as door opened straight onto the street. Twice we had people attempting to get into the room…. Two very drunk guests argued outside then tried to open our door. I jumped up and shouted at them it wasn’t their room. Unfortunately when I’ve checked the door was shut to I believe I inadvertently pushed the door latch - around 20 mins later someone literally walked into the room
As we were just getting back to sleep! He apologised and stumbled back out. The hotel manager dismissed my concerns on hotels.com messenger and said it was impossible for it to happen. Maybe check your CCtV and see for yourself David. I’ll accept an apology when you see I’m telling the truth! more visible signage on the door that it’s room 17 and not the entrance to the other hotel area may be helpful also! Won’t be returning which is a shame as the location and breakfast were great.

I stayed for only one night and did not partake of everything on offer but was very happy with the room, and cleanliness. The staff should get a special mention because they were all friendly and welcoming

Had a main-floor courtyard room this time, which saved our having to tackle the stairs. Got to enjoy the beautiful back patio and other spaces.

Not letting us check in at 252 as check in wasn't till 3pm was petty. Said on booking has 2 double beds but wasn't the case and no apology. Nowhere near enough staff. Room ok with a view of rubbish bins.

Noisy from outside and bottle bins being emptied at 6am. Needs double or secondary glazing. Room was nice and clean staff were friendly

A beautiful hotel very central location near the Cathedral our room was in the cottage which was beautifully decorated.
Breakfast is extra £15 pp we declined as there are so many nice little cafes and coffee shops near by.
The bed mattress was too hard which I know is a personal choice.
Would definitely return.

A bit disappointed after looking at the reviews. The room was very small and cramped. Very basic for the price we paid. The staff were friendly and helpful. Just missing a few frills.

On arrival we were moved to another twin room due to my mobility as we had been allocated a room at the top of the house with no problem.

Perfect location, loved the history of the building, the staff were amazing and breakfast was superb. The reason that I did drop a star was that the booking on Expedia stated that there would be 2 double beds in the room. I assume this must have been a technical glitch. Not a major problem, but I was a little disappointed in the room. The pictures on the website were somewhat misleading. The room was tiny with absolutely no storage and the soundproofing from the adjacent room was extremely poor. However as we were only there for one night we managed. Had it been longer, then I think I would have been rather upset. We weren’t in the room long, but when we were we were literally falling over each other.

This is a fantastic place to stay. Right in the heart of Chester above (and adjoining) a brilliant pub. The only thing I'd be aware of are the walls are quite thin (I didn't hear anything from the pub just from other guests). Other than that, an excellent hotel, with great service, and certainly somewhere I'd stay again

Nice old pub in the centre of town.
Bar and staff were good, although very rowdy customers into the early hours (3am on Friday!)
Evening meal was very good.
Room was a little tired and odd things like the sheets weren't wide enough to tuck-in properly, Bathroom was good.

Staff and service were very good. Evening meal and breakfast very good. Room was clean and tidy. Only down side was I had a front bedroom and so there was a lot of street noise from the pub next door and unfortunately night road works going on so again noisy.
Overall lovely old pub.

Stay was awful from start to finish. Hotel not very helpful with issues raised even before trying to settle down for the night. We expressed concerns with the noise coming from outside the building from the neighbouring pub and the street, we were told we couldn’t be moved as there was nothing else available despite rooms being available on other booking sites.
We then had to endure noise until 3:30am in the morning from drunken students, again we were woken up around 4:40am with bins being emptied and again at 5:30 with the council cleaning the streets. Hotel doesn’t have double glazing, walls are paper thin and management are not helpful in the slightest, they also didn’t process a refund as was promised when discussing our problems with Hotel.com and have now withdrawn this offer. My advice would be to ignore the ‘Exceptional’ or 10 out of 10 reviews as weirdly they are scored highly but with no comments to back this up.
Please do your self a favour and avoid, you’ll be saving yourself the worst nights sleep you could possibly have.

Great location, friendly team, clean, good value for money.
Only downside is noise combined with single glazed windows - but if not joining the fun then a set of ear plugs solves the problem.
