Well, as we knew very well, Sakishoin is not a typical hotel, it is a monastery playing hotel, or a hotel playing monastery, whichever you prefer. The room was large and contained a bathroom and toilet. Everything is clean, no complaints. The location is just great, very close to the old cemetery and mausoleum.
Well, the staff don't speak even minimal English, but they are friendly and try to help even if they can't. The food (breakfast and dinner) is terrible. I knew perfectly well that there were vegetarians in the monastery. But vegetarian food can and should be delicious. Especially if it costs like dinner at the best restaurant. But I'm sorry to say that the food was inedible. None of the guests liked it, not only us. Then they began to collect money for a strange ritual. You can offer anything, including rituals, prayers, and so on, but if you just go one by one to the guests during dinner and collect money, it sounds and looks bad. All in all, this inn is very expensive and definitely not worth the money spent.

Loved our stay at Sekishoin. The dinner and breakfast were so YUM and very filling. Location is perfect, within walking distance of everything. Very cool experience!

Very clean. Lovely experience. Very remote traditional vibe. The onsen was also good. Surprisingly comfortable sleep despite being on the floor (tatami I think?).
Very spacious rooms and a cute little balcony where you can enjoy their zen gardens in the morning with a coffee.
Not the biggest fan of the traditional Buddhist meals.

We felt very fortunate to be able to stay at Sekishoin. The food was splendid and everyone we encountered was kind and welcoming. You, one of the monks, was especially helpful when I asked to honor my father during morning prayers. We wish we could had stayed longer.
Nothing. We had read reviews before we came and didn’t expect the Four Seasons. This is an active temple and we were pleased to have the opportunity to stay there.

Great food. Friendly (staff), and when guests made mistakes they were patient.
Accurate comment in Japanese by an older monk about the impatience and youth of the guests during the morning service, but perhaps these comments could be made out of earshot.

It was my first time doing a shukubo and it was absolutely wonderful. Our japanese-style room was exceptional: we had a cozy kotatsu, a private spacious bathroom with toilet and bathtub, a wonderful view and direct access to the zen garden and a more private area for the futon (super fluffy and comfortable). There were even nice samue and a warm cozy haori!!
We had both dinner and breakfast included and it was the famous shojin ryouri, the buddhist vegetarian cuisine. It was the first time trying it and it was AMAZING!
We could also assist to the morning prayer and take a nice bath in the sentou, the public bathtubs. Everything was absolutely amazing and the monks were extremely kind. I absolutely reccomand!
To me everything was exceptional, but it is important to keep in mind that the check-in, dinner, breakfast and prayer times, as well as the sentou opening and closing times are extremely fixed: once you missed those you won't be able to get your room or your dinner anymore. So it is important to carefully respect the temple's rules in order not to have any issue.

we had a wonderful stay at the temple with extremely polite monks and staff who prepared us with delicious local delicacies for dinner and breakfast. morning prayers were quite spiritual and we had a pinyin text to read the Sutras along with the priests. Vending machines were really helpful in giving us hot coffee, tea and beer on-site. Japanese garden is very beautiful and has a direct access from the rooms which is really beautiful and relaxing. Room had an attached powder room, toilet and shower with 16-tatami comfortable stay. Tea table comes with the leg heating and the room had a centralised Ventilator, air conditioner and a personal heater which made our stay more comfortable than a hotel or a ryokan. We were able to offer prayers to our ancestors and the priests offered us with lucky charm plates and sacred threads for wristbands. The onsen was hot and really clean and one of the best stays we had in a 3 month long trip to Japan. We would definitely return back to this temple in the future.

Nice temple and nice rooms. You have kimonos in the room, cool to move around the temple.
Food served for dinner and breakfast was a nice variety of vegetarian dishes.
When on December, room had good heated to keep it warm.
Overpriced.
Onsen is very small, just 1 or 2 people can fit there.

The location for the night cemetary tour was perfect and also to walk around in the town.
It said that the staff spoke English and the morning service would be explained in English. This wasn‘t the case, it was only explained in Japanese. Since I was very interested in how the buddhist life is, this was very disappointing for me.

not much interaction with anyone, also the room was not very clean (e.g. toilets)

The location is excellent bus at stop no.10. Less than 1 minute walk to entrance of Okunoin cemetery, and the useful Tourist information center is opposite bus stop. The garden is beautiful. The ensuite room had a good heater. We slept very well on our futon beds. View from balcony is great.we were lucky we had considerate guests (all Japanese) who tried not to make noise. The walls are thin. I read a review where guest said she and her friends talked quietly into the night. There is no way they couldn't be heard. Dinner is in the dining hall. Morning prayers was a nice experience and the prayer hall is beautiful and well heated. You can leave your luggage before and after check in.
The onsen was too hot for me at 4pm when it opened. I think temperature would be just right by 6pm or later for me. My husband said once you get all the way into the onsen it is not so hot and he enjoyed it.

Loved the garden and how close it is to the cemetery. The food was good too.

good option if you want to be in contact with the Buddhist culture as all of the staff are monks, one of a life time experience as you get to try their traditional clothing and attend Buddhist rituals, perfect location about 50m from the closest bus stop

Simple, but comfortable, room. Snow scenes outside made it feel that bit more cozy. I liked wearing the monk's samu-e wear. Food was nice, nutritious shojin ryori (plant-based Buddhist monk cooking). Seemed like small portions at first, but it was plenty! Due to Corona food was served in separate rooms.
All was as expected really! But even though I've been in Japan for many years I found the onsen was far too hot.

The check-in staff was polite and fun. I am fine with overall staying there. The food is ok just a bit cold. The futon bed is comfortable but why the blanket is under the duvet? isn't we should use a duvet then a blanket to be on top of it.
The staff (i don't know who, and only know is a guy) didn't knock on the door on my check-out day and they were just opening my room "Midory" directly while I was in the toilet (Toilet door direct facing entrance door). And even no sorry announced and not even asked before they came to the room. That was about 9:30 am (when hotel check-out time was listed at 10 am). On the other hand, the description was mentioned breakfast and dinner served at the room, while during my stay, it's being arranged in the public area (I understand maybe because of the manpower issue), but the tempura was cold, the eating area also cold with no heater, lucky the green tea is hot enough despite the cold weather. The room is comfy, but the previous dirty tower was left behind on top of the basin area.

surprisingly more modern than expected with a beautiful and large Interior Garden.
- funny and friendly Staff
- comfortable Rooms with good Equipment
- delicious Meal
- the hot Water in the Bathroom was very relaxing
- Location, as well as Bus Stop were good and close
NO disadvantage, just Hints:
- from November it is very cold
- the Corridors in many Temples are not heated in Winter
- the entire Temple Area is carpeted and doesn't allow Shoes
- the Food is vegetarian!!! NO MEAT! (too many People ignor the Information about the Food and see it as a negative Point, but have no Idea about Shintoism or japanese Cuisine.)
- Payment via Cash. NO CARD ALLOWED
The Announcement of the Prayers early in the Morning was the only disturbing Factor in the entire Temple.

this is a temple with no ethics

Il is a temple, not an ordinary hôtel. Some tourists do not think about it. We were happy to follow the morning office. It is better for tourists to know some japanese words and to be respectful in such a place.
The way to wash the jimbei, they had a bad smell.

The temple is very beautiful and peaceful and it's near to the bus station and the Okunoin graveyard. The room was clean and warm with a great view of the japanese garden below. There is an onsen which was great! The dinner was really delicious!
