The New Inn a13th century former coaching inn is an iconic building located in the heart of Cerne Abbas a quaint charming village that is world renowned for the Cerne Giant, a 180 ft high ancient chalk figure carved into the steep sloping hillside representing the Roman god Hercules or is a Pagan fertility symbol. The village of Cerne Abbas grew around a great Benedictine Abbey, which was founded in AD 987 however the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century sadly saw the Abbey destroyed. The Inn set in Hardy country Dorset Dorchester is located adjacent to the Palmer Family Thatched Brewery 1794 on the banks of the River Brit one mile from the Jurassic Coast. Arriving Later than anticipated from a delayed ferry crossing 2000hrs - Julian, Annette and Hayley were all informed of our dilemma only to be informed that the kitchen was closed for the evening (dinner service New Inn - 1800-2030hrs) - Disappointed, hot and tired settled for a cold tapas type snack cheese/biscuits and ham/salami/olives served with iced cold beer and gin/tonic.
Our designated room was Wrackle quite spacious however the room had not been air was rather stuffy and smelt fusty - we were not able to open the sash windows as they had been painted shut. The Bed was comfortable although could not breathe due to the lack of ventilation.
Lack of ventilation as the windows had been painted shut and the room had not been aired. We were informed that Breakfast was served 0800-0920 and we confirmed 0915hrs would be perfect. After our snacks were served we were told 0900 sharp was the last breakfast serving kitchen would be closed. At 0855hrs we had to wait to be seated as the breakfast waitress was busy resolving a guest bill. This guest involved actually stopped us from sitting down for breakfast until 0930hrs (we had to wait away from the bar) After this we were hastened to hurry breakfast - although service was laboured and clumsy - Breakfast was adequate and certainly not the best. On viewing the room/bar bill - Room was as expected however dinner comprising of tapas style snack/starter (both the cheese biscuits and bread were stale) with 2 drinks was in excess of over £60+.

A little more light in the dining room.

Friendly, helpful staff
All good

An attractive restaurant providing good food and an excellent breakfast. A lovely courtyard provides just the right ambience for a pre-prandial drink. The pub is in and ideal situation in a very attractive and historic village and is a good base for touring the area, with Hardy country nearby, and within 3/4 hour to the coast.
Nothing.

The staff were excellent and the meals very good
The stairs to our room were very steep and the hand rail was wobbly

The breakfast was excellent. Our room was very comfortable with a proper wardrobe and a comfortable bed. We felt we had enough room. There was also a lovely view of the high street. It is an old building, so no air conditioning, however there was a fan, which helped. Off street parking was convenient and very well kept. There was an event on when we were there, so we went to another pub for lunch (The Giant) which was also good.
The stairs down are old and a little uneven, so a little tricky if you have to take care on stairs.

The room, with ensuite etc was in a converted stone outbuilding/former stables, probably. Very comfortable. Everything you needed was there and everything functioned as you would hope. All good really. The pub is in the centre of Cerne Abbas, so perfectly located for walks around the village and beyond.

Our particular room , although fine itself was above the entrance arch and was noisy at times with people congregating below .

If you’re looking for a quintessential English pub, this is it. Cozy, comfortable and delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. The pub owners are rightly proud of their beautiful inn, reflected in the care and excellent service they provide their customers.
