About this apartment rental
A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by.
The modern, cozy kitchen will support all of your cooking needs. Plenty of inside dining areas, as well as dining al fresco on the deck, right next to the kitchen. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance (seasonally). There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views of our gardens, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. The gardens and expansive lawn, lead to a small pond where you can sit next to the fire pit and roast marshmallows.
Owls Head is a secluded and scenic buoy and lobster pot dotted peninsula, one of Maine's authentic waterfront colonies. Centrally located in midcoast Maine, it is the perfect starting point for day-trip adventures. Rockland is only 5 minutes away and 15 minutes to Camden, both offer great shopping, museums, art galleries and festivals. Next door is the "world's best" general store with "award winning" breakfasts and lunches served daily. Grocery items, soda, and wine available for you to take along on your daily adventures. A five minute walk down the hill takes you to a wharf, where you can buy lobster right off the boat. Only 3 minutes down the road is our favorite (award winning) farm to table restaurant, Primo's. There are so many amazing restaurants and lobster shacks close by.
Turns out, you can get there and almost anywhere from here!

Very clean, comfortable, and well-equipped apartment above the post office. Filled with nautical (and owl-themed) items. Just as described in literature. Outstanding and helpful communications with owner.

The post office did not disappoint! Our stay was wonderful! Such a charming and unique set up with so many handmade and antique details. We loved the porch and yard! The frog pond and dock/deck were such fun for our kids. Incredible location next to the general store and close to many beaches! We hope to stay again! Thank you!

Doug has created the perfect place to stay while visiting the Rockland/Camden area. The PO is so clean and such a unique place to stay. It is #1 of places we have stayed. Highly recommend this wonderful VRBO!!

Staying at the Owls Head post office was like staying in a storybook. We couldn’t have imagined a more enchanting location, next door to a precious general store with a restaurant, and also down the street from a gorgeous beach and light house. The beds are just right and the decor satisfies the imagination. Thank you for this special place!

Our stay was perfect. The photos online are good, but seeing it in person makes you realize how big the space is! Every inch is decorated with trinkets, heart rocks, and of course, owls! The air conditioning works very well downstairs. Pointing a fan up the stairs and keeping the cupola windows open helps with keeping the top floors cool. Being next to the General Store is a huge plus - delicious food and fudge within walking distance when you don’t feel like fighting the hustle and bustle of Rockland!
Doug graciously agreed to let us have our wedding reception here after getting married on the beach. He was extremely responsive, gave great local advice, and was even in the gardens the day before we checked in to make everything look good (it looked amazing!!!). The backyard garden was beautiful. It was large, yet intimate, and I couldn’t imagine our wedding reception being held anywhere else. Mosquitos weren’t an issue for me, once the sun went down the beetles came out, but that’s Maine for you! Whether you’re looking for a place to host an event or just wanting to get away, this is absolutely the place to stay.

This is the third time we have stayed at the Owl’s Head post office; it just keeps getting better!! We were able to get a couple of kayak trips, day trip to Acadia, and enjoy many of the great restaurants in Rockland. Probably our favorite is to go for a long kayak paddle and come back to enjoy the famous Owl’s Head general store “7 napkin burger”….amazing!!

The post office apartment is unique and wonderful. Its eclectic decor and open spaces make it a delight for guests. The private garden is a real bonus as is its access to the ocean minutes away. Having the famed Owls Head General Store next door is perfect for breakfast or an impromptu meal. Doug the landlord could not be more responsive or accommodating.

We've loved each of our five stays at the Owls Head Post Office over the past 10 years. Walking down Main Street to watch the lobster boats come in, running the Hendrickson's Point loop to Crescent beach, walking our dog at Birch Point, hiking Bald Mountain and the Camden hills, eating out at two of our favorite restaurants in the world (Primo and 18 Central), eating fresh seafood at home from Jess's, and reading on the porch, gazing at that beautiful garden -- it is such a treat.

Unique, spectacular couldn't have been better! You can't beat the location. The garden was spectacular and the little shop next door was so convenient. Thanks for a wonderful stay. We will definitely be back!

We stayed at the post office while we were in Maine for a family event. We loved the uniqueness and beauty of the house and the property. While we didn't have a chance to use the yard it was gorgeous. The location was great, just a few minutes from downtown Rockland and the General Store next door serves delicious breakfast and burgers.we would love to stay here again when we are able to use all the amenities the property offers like the kayaks.
The owners were very responsive to inquiries and check in was very easy. We highly recommend this property!

We adored our short stay at the Owl's Head Post Office.
Unbelievably clean - almost uncanny lack of dust in places that I wouldn't even mind finding dust, like the ledge under the bathroom mirror or out-of-sight tops of beams. Special thanks to the cleaners for their incredibly thorough work!
Comfortable linens - After a couple nights on hotel polyester sheets, the Post Office linens were a dream. More blankets were found in the cupboard under the steps on a chillier night.
Our hosts provided a detailed list of local recommendations. (The Keag had the best volume-to-price ratio of the lobster/crab rolls we tried.) Refrigerator and coffee pot are mini-sized, so we made several pots of coffee each morning, which we carried up to the...
... cupola! - A highlight of our stay was reading in the cupola each morning as the sun rose! The trees are filled in by May, so you can't see the ocean then - no problem for us. Mostly steep & narrow steps at the Post Office (& possible head-bumps in the cupola) - also not a problem for us, but physical ability should be a consideration when booking here.
Provided kayak & gear 😍 - we were the only people on Monroe Island, a comfortable trip even without a ton of experience. SUCH a special experience. USE BUG SPRAY!!
Delightful, picturesque area: hiking, lighthouses, & SO MANY independent bookstores! Friendly shopkeepers recognized us on repeat visits.
Thank you to our hosts for the thoughtful curation of this vacation stay!!

My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing stay at the “Post Office”! It was just as advertised and more! It is so unique, you have to experience it to appreciate it! The Cupalo up top is my newest “Happy Place”❤️. From the birds at the feeders, to the beautiful gardens and the general store next door, you want for nothing. We plan to return‼️ Kris

Magical for us and our 10yo, who started asking to come back about 2 minutes after arriving.

This apartment above the Post Office in the tiny village of Owl's Head is one of the most-unique places we've stayed during our world travels. We were there over New Year's weekend, and in winter things tend to shutdown around here.
However, the magnificent solitude and coastal walks out to the beautiful Owl's Head Lighthouse was just what we were looking for as a serene way to welcome in 2024.
For such a small place, there's a ton of room in the apartment with a queen bed on the main level and more upstairs. We appreciated the well-stock galley kitchen, where we prepared a NYE feast of fresh local seafood.
Off the back is large, elevated deck, which wasn't a great place for sitting in winter, but must be spectacular overlooking the gardens in summertime.
Doug was a very helpful, gracious host who checked in via the app to ensure that we had everything we needed, and even let us have a late check out on New Year's Day.
We'd highly recommend this lovely apartment, and definitely hope to come back when the weather is warmer.

We enjoyed a long weekend in this lovely and well appointed property. It was clean, had everything we needed and the outdoor private area was the icing on the cake! This property is right next door to the general store and seven minutes from downtown Rockland. Over all very happy!

This is the second year in a row that my husband and I stayed at this charming place. It's so cozy and the gardens are beautiful and serene. I loved drinking my coffee in the crow's nest while watching the sun rise over the gardens. Bonus points for being near the light house and several beaches for sea glass-hunting. The General Store's food can't be beat, but It does get a bit noisy from the customers at the General Store during the day. There were several customers who wandered into the backyard a few times where we were sitting by the fire pit. If you can deal with these minor annoyances, this place is fantastic!

Already missing this place! Beautiful property, and full of character. The cupola is a perfect spot for reading with a cup of coffee. Lovely backyard with gardens and a pond. Close to Rockland and Camden (great restaurants/shopping--don't miss Primo for farm to table dinner) and the Owl's Head General Store right next door for coffee, yummy breakfast sandwiches, chowder, and the famous 7 Napkin Burger.

This is our second stay at the post office and we still all adore it. From the teenager who likes having her own loft room to the husband who loves the views and the light from the copula - everyone has their space. The porch is a perfect place for tea and a book and you can’t go hungry with the general store next door. And it’s so easy to get to Camden or Boothbay or Acadia. Being able to kayak around bay was one of the highlights of the trip this time. We didn’t want to leave.

Unusual interior, but fully functional and very beautiful. Convenient to everything from Owls Head to Camden. Lovely deck and great “crows nest.” We had a perfect week.

We stayed in the post office for a week in Maine. The beds are comfortable, the water pressure is good, and the food at the general store next door is awesome!
We could have spent a week just at the post office, as lovely as the back yard is!
Would absolutely rent again!

For several years we have bee trying to vacation in Maine, staying at the Owls Head Post Office. Our week there did not disappoint. What a fun place for us and the children plus our two dachshunds. Every day we discovered something new in the apartment. The bunks in the cupola were a great hit with our granddaughters. The backyard grounds are super as is the deck just off the kitchen. We made use of the General Store next door; the food was great. We are already thinking about a return trip.

This was our fourth time at the Post Office, our second year in a row for a full week in June. All the glowing reviews we've posted over the years still hold: it is such a wonderfully located, unique, comfortable space. Bravo!

We arrived the first Sat in June and the temp was 42, so we were very happy that the heat worked very well. This cottage is so cute, just as advertised. Very clean, comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. The gardens are beautiful. We highly recommend!

I loved this place. The owner was helpful when the cable went out. The grounds are beautiful. There is not much to do in the area, which would be the biggest concern and nothing against the rental itself. A couple of things to note that I wasn't aware of: there are a lot of stairs to get into the main part of the unit (I had to carry my blind dog up and down each time it needed to go out), none of the bedrooms have 4 walls (the master is in the living room), and you can hear the post office opening up on work days (not a big deal, but it caused my dogs to bark every morning). Overall, we loved the place and would go back. It was convenient having the store right next door and the house was stocked with many extras that you may need. It was probably the cutest rental I've ever had. I loved the charm of the place.

We had such a lovely holiday at this property. It was everything we wanted for a trip after the busy Christmas season. It comfortably fit our young family of four. The crow's nest was a great hangout for the girls, but was a bit to nervous to let them sleep there (a bit steep for a 3 year old).
We have returned home very relaxed after a week of enjoying the best seafood and taking some amazing strolls around nearby scenic areas (it reached almost 60 degrees in January!)
Several restaurants and stores are closed around this time of year, but there are plenty still open. We just had do to a bit more research and made sure to make reservations. ALL of the suggestions for food were greatly appreciated and exceptional! We've been to this area before, but missed some of the restaurants suggested. We look forward to returning!

A delightfully eclectic and unique accommodation perched above the post office! Loved the fun themed decor. Kitchen is well stocked with a very comfortable dining area. Everything very clean with comfy beds. The gardens were amazing. Despite cooler weather during our October stay, we enjoyed the lovely deck just outside the kitchen. A great stay!!

We loved the location, the antique and vintage decor - this spot is eclectic, charming, beautiful, and comfortable. Plenty warm despite cold weather and a strong wind. We can't wait to come back.

This was a trip for our 19th wedding anniversary and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay! This is the most unique place we've stayed and it is everything we wanted for our trip. The living space was cozy and comfortable, particularly the queen bed in the living area. The amenities available in the house were beyond adequate; the hosts left everything needed to make our stay enjoyable. But, I think our favorite part is the gardens and the view from the deck into the gardens. Simply tranquil. We enjoyed gazing at the full moon in the garden, and having a cozy bonfire at the fire pit.
This is a pleasant little town and you definitely should not miss the Owls Head General Store! We ate the best pizza and breakfast sandwiches we've had on a vacation. Even better, the folks at the store were wonderful to both us and our dog. We're glad we took the hosts' advice in regard to dining. Thank you very much for making our trip so special!
