About this house rental
**LAST MINUTE SPECIALS**
Stunning custom home overlooking the gorgeous Lake Purgatory! Take in amazing views from every room in the house. Hike down to the trout-filled lake from the incredible wrap-around deck. And enjoy evenings under the stars in the picture-perfect hot tub nestled in a forest of Aspen trees and Evergreens. While you'll never want to leave this mountain gem, you're just minutes to Purgatory Resort and some of the best skiing and hiking around.
As you enter through the front door and walk up a few stairs, you're greeted by a warm and open living space. All new carpet installed as of September 2024. The family room features a dramatic stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings and a wall of windows so you can view the mountains and the lake at all times. Living room furnishings include leather couches, recliner and large coffee table—perfect for game night. There's also a Smart TV (bring your NetFlix and Hulu credentials and pick up where you left off), Starlink WiFi and cabinet full of games. Satellite TV subscription as well.
Next to the living room and centered in the house is the custom kitchen, featuring granite countertops, gas stove/range, toaster oven, griddle, toaster, crock pot, coffee maker, pots, pans, dishes and all your cooking essentials.
The dining area is furnished with Pottery Barn table, chairs and bench, and windows that face the north with great views of Engineer Peak, almost 13,000 feet in elevation. Additional seating can be found at the bar stools.
The master bedroom is located on the main floor and has its own private door to access the outdoor deck. Views from all rooms are exceptional, but the master is particularly great. The corner room gives you views of the trees, lake and mountain peaks. There is also a twin size trundle bed tucked underneath the king master bed (new cooling hybrid mattress in July 2022). The master bathroom features a deep soaking tub, double sink, and separate walk-in shower.
Head upstairs and you're welcomed by a large loft with a sitting area and small office work place. Not that you'll want to work, but if you have to, this is just the spot. The loft opens up to the living room and that fantastic wall of windows. A new couch and sleeper sofa (as of fall 2022) is upstairs so we can now accommodate 10 guests. Also upstairs is a TV, DVD player and assortment of DVDs. Perfect for a kids' movie night!
Also upstairs are two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The first bedroom includes a queen size bed and walk-in closet. The second bedroom is a bunk room with two sets of bunk beds (new memory foam mattress in July 2022). The bunk room can sleep 4 and also features a large walk-in closet.
Additionally, there is a full sized washer/dryer on the main floor and separate mudroom downstairs.
Since this property is right on the lake, there is a canoe at your disposal. It is Colorado state law for anyone under age 16 to have a life vest on (also available to you). Take some fishing poles with you and try your luck at catching some trout! Please catch and release.
During the summer months, there is a commercial grade, 8-person picnic table with umbrella and lights so you can enjoy all the views of Lake Purgatory and the San Juan mountains. The weather is usually very nice in the summer so there is no A/C, which is common for houses at this altitude. Just open the windows and enjoy fresh mountain air.
The family-friendly Purgatory Ski Resort is just 1.5 miles down the road. Winter activities include skiing, tubing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, snowmobile adventures and more! Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, alpine slide, zipline, scenic chairlifts, summer tubing, and the new mountain coaster.
Land line available in the house in case cell phone coverage is spotty. Unlimited domestic long-distance available at no additional cost.
No outside boats allowed on the lake. Only the permitted canoe that comes with the house has been inspected and tagged with a sticker.
Fishing is catch and release.
No pets allowed.
****WINTER months driving requirements (or when snow is present): 4x4 with great tires. If you don't have great tires, then chains are required, per home association rules. AWD vehicles require chains or snow tires. 2-wheel drive vehicles prohibited in winter or when snow is present. You cannot make it up the driveway without following these rules. This is a warning to take very seriously. Lake Purgatory drive is an unpaved dirt road and there are a couple hills that can make winter travel treacherous if you don't have the right equipment. ****

We enjoyed our stay at this home. The back patio, fire pit, hot tub were enjoyed soaking in the beautiful weather. Great house for a family.

Overall we give the property 3 stars. Home was clean, but not dusted, many furnishings were layered in dust. Light bulbs flickered most of the trip only to find they were not screwed in all the way, which could’ve been fixed had a maintenance assessment been completed.
It seemed like someone staythere frequently- baby diapers, baby gates, and personal clothing in master drawers.*** There is no access to the master closet which makes bringing clothes up and down 2nd floor stairs problematic.***
Seemed to be an electrical shortage in the home, several of us got shocked when turning lights on or off.
Good location with close proximity to Purgatory for skiers and those that want to be outside of Durango though.

This home is first class! We stayed here while we skied at Wolf Creek. The home was an oasis and the perfect place for us to wind down by the fire each night! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and gorgeous views of the mountains.

Millions dollar views and so much more! Conveniently located to the ski resort with restaurants, stores for quick shopping needs, and just 20 minutes to Honeyville and the Hot Springs and 25 minutes to Durango. We enjoyed our stay gratefully and with hope of returning. The home was warm, cozy, functional and magical. It housed moments that created memories that we all will cherish for a lifetime. We are truly blessed and grateful! Loved the extra thought to place a real Christmas tree in the living room. It was such a nice welcome to this special home. ♡

This property is glorious. Seriously. It was beautiful, scenic, all utilities worked without a hitch. The hot tub, appliances and accommodations were stellar.

This house was perfect for my family of 4. We loved the location and the accommodations were great. More difficult to get to the lake than I imagined- but we made it. We were there when the leaves were changing and it was breathtaking!

Wonderful vacation home! Great location - not too close, not too far from Durango. Easy day trips to Mesa Verde National Park, Silverton and Ouray. Lots of great hiking very close too.

We rented for a long weekend. The house was amazing. Has everything anyone would need to relax and be comfortable. Beautiful location and we enjoyed every minute.

Our family stayed at this home for 3 nights and loved every minute! It was close enough yet far enough away from Durango! The home is very spacious, well equipped, clean and comfortable. We felt right at home and were welcomed by the property manager who was great! Fantastic views, even with an abundance of snow surrounding the property. The road to the home was perfectly clear and easy to navigate. Best part is how quiet it is and how clear the sky is to see the best view of the Colorado stars! We would stay here again for sure!

Great spot for enjoying the slopes and then returning to a cozy home with fire place and hot tub! If it is snowing making sure you have 4x4 drive and maybe even chains.

We arrived to a immaculately clean home that was already warmed up! Less than a 2 minute drive to the ski area. We loved our stay and would definitely return. Thank you. Just needed the outdoor trash can to be available..

This property was beautiful and in a great location. Close to Purgatory Ski Resort!
The property does need a deep cleaning, dryer needs maintained, and cook stove needs attention.
However the owner Dave was very helpful and apologetic and returned my cleaning fee. I believe any family would enjoy staying at this property if these issues are addressed.

We enjoyed our stay. There were no surprises or disappointments. The house was easy drive to Silverton or Durango. The owner was very easy to work with and wanted to make sure that everything was right for us.

Great house. Thanks for sharing.
Humming birds galore. Five or more on the feeders at one time. Plus there is a marmot family living in a den right off the deck.
All the other reviews are right. The house is awesome and has everything you need. There are a bunch of great hikes right in the area. Spud lake was easy and nice, however, the road to get there is rough. Purgatory flats to the Animas is a really nice hike that is minutes from the house.
Fishing at Cascade Creek a couple of minutes down the road is a lot fun and the brook trout over there love the dry fly (elk hair caddis worked great).
Recommend highly.

Second time staying here. Love everything about this place. Property is in great shape, and owner makes effort to keep things in top shape. We had zero issues with anything. Amazing view every morning. Only have been here during the summer and it is such a nice break from the heat. Thank you!!

I picked this house for our family's hiking vacation primarily based on its location. NAILED IT.
While Durango is a great city for restaurants, etc. (we drove there for dinner each night, about 30 mts), the good hiking IMO is N of Lake Purgatory where this property is. It was one of the best houses I could find where it was not a cabin-type feel (N of here there is a lot of that on VRBO).
All of our hikes including Ice/Island Lakes, Highland Mary Loop, Colorado Trail N of Little Molas, etc. were between 30 mts and 1 hour N of the VRBO. If we would have stayed in Durango, that would have tacked on another 30-40 mts of driving.
The house is big, well made and situated on a quiet lake. We did not use the canoe or paddleboat, but they are available. Very pretty. Great bathrooms. Only thing to note is that the throw rug in living room was dirty, but that didn't bother me - just surprised me b/c the house was SO nice. Owner was very responsive. Very low maintenance in terms of what he wanted us to do for check out vs. other VRBOS. I was surprised the WiFi was as good as it was for a house in the mountains. Much better than other rentals we have had (we were in Ridgway last summer hiking same area).
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone looking to hike or explore in/around Silverton, Lake Purgatory + Durango

Paradise in the Mountains
Stop looking and book this place! The view is incredible, and it’s conveniently located to everything you need.
The beds are so comfy, and the cabin is well stocked. The hot tub is wonderful, and the kids had an awesome time exploring the trail down to the lake.
We will for sure be back.

Family get away
Family with two teen daughters and one mother-in-law. The property was amazing! We would stay here again. Everything in the pics seemed bigger to me, but overall this location and view are spectacular. Host has the process down beautiful. I brought things I thought the house wouldn't have, but was pleasantly surprised to find everything stocked. Splurge if you are on the fence.

Phenomenal property...
Jonathan does a great job with the upkeep of the place, and helped us out track down an escaped canoe. Everything great about the rental has already been mentioned, so I'll just throw out some random notes that I don't recall being posted:
-if weather permits (it was just about perfect in mid May) and you keep the windows open, you'll probably want to close the bedroom/bathroom doors. When the wind picks up a bit, it tends to slam the doors shut. The first time it happens is liable to give you a jump scare.
-Speaking of winds, make sure to keep the hot tub cover strapped down. It tried to escape quite a few times.
-You may want to stop at the property before going grocery shopping. Besides some of the expected basics, the pantry has random food and tasty snacks (I assume left over from previous visitors). We left some non-perishable food and drinks there ourselves. You could end up saving some cash, and the Hermosa grocery isn't too far away (~20 minutes). The Needles convenience store is also very close and well stocked, so you won't have to trek all the way back to Durango to shop.
-If you're from a low altitude area, definitely give yourself a few days to acclimate to the elevation before strenuous hiking. Adjusting from a lifetime living below sea level (New Orleans) to ~8000' elevation was a bit of a struggle.
-The lake bank is a bit of a steep slope, but you can still set up folding chairs there and be comfortable. There's a rocky and fairly flat spot about 2/3rds of the way down with great views that we preferred for lounging.

Beautiful cabin, prefect location
The cabin is beautiful and well maintained. It’s even better than the pictures. Super clean. Great location, 1 mile from Purgatory ski resort. 15 minutes from Durango. The owner is super responsive, and the property manager, Johnathan, is very professional.

Second stay at a great Durango property
We had stayed at this property 2 years ago and it was such a great time, we could not wait to stay here again. From the moment we arrived with flowers and a candle our long weekend stay was magical. The caretaker Jonathan was attentive as needed and paid great attention to the details. The views are breathtakingly majestic and location perfect. We had beautiful fresh snow with great days to build a snowman/sled followed by time in the hot tub under sky lit with stars. We look forward to our next stay at this grand and magical property.

Great little home
Good for our two close families with four kids. Rooms are small, but the house is comfortable. Kitchen had nice cookware and utensils. Not many spices so bring your own. Regular coffee maker, no keurig - just a heads up. We got 45” of snow during our stay and the plow was working hard to keep neighborhood roads and driveway passable. They did a great job. You will need 4x4 in winter. satellite TV didn’t work and upstairs TV was not working, but we didn’t come to sit infront of the TV. Hot tub was nice, needed water, but we added snow. LOL. BBQ worked great. All-in-all a great little spot, convenient to Purg.

Could be luxury with some improvements
Overall this was good. Beautiful property and home. Amazing hot tub. Tons of good DVDs and 2 forms of internet was very appreciated. Kids loved the toys and coloring books. Tons of dishes and spices. Overall the floors and counters were pretty clean but we did have some complaints. The property managers are extremely helpful and easy to contact, but there is just a lot of things that need updating/repair/replacement. As a guest I don't think I'm responsible for quality control; I contacted them for items that needed immediate attention and they were responsive.
- All very uncomfortable beds, very smushed old pillows, inexpensive old polyester bed linens, comforters were old and stained, not sure if those get washed every time. Sleeping did not go well here. Was also tough getting the heat right, it's just hard in these multi level buildings
- many light bulbs were burned out, and there were also no lights outside, requiring use of cell phone flashlights in the dark.
- majority of walls scuffed, need painting and patches
- couches very smushed, and not enough throw pillows not very comfortable to hang out at
-lots of board games available but nearly all the pieces were missing for the majority of them, they should really just be thrown out
- no Tupperware, dull knives, cheap worn pots and pans with nonstick coating peeling off, broken microwave literally duck taped together, some of the burners on the cooktop don't work
- no access to the garage which would have been nice given the icy condition of the driveway. It never sees sun so it's like a super steep skating rink. Do not dismiss the requirement for 4WD to get there.
Overall, with some attention this could be an extraordinary luxury home. We would be glad to stay again due to the location.

our weekend stay
The home is fabulous! It has the most fabulously views!! Inside is open which gives your group a place to feel inclusive. With a 2nd level area with tv for some to go be apart if they wish .This also had a printer (in other homes we never came across)
The kitchen was fabulously equipped a LOT of cookware and big drawer of cutlery. Several drawers with junk drawer type things that can be useful . has games & movies. Many items in pantry laundry room. The fireplace was great with plenty of wood. We did not use the hot tub but it was running when we got there.
Watch out for ice falling off the roof , it sounds like thunder when it hits the deck ( we noticed in the snow in front of garage broken car windshield, probably from getting hit with ice). Drive is steep and even though plowed nicely it is icy and could use some salt where you get out of car.
Re: cleaning : the home is very clean & tidy Well-kept & fastidious.
But the cleaners need to pay attention to things . there was silverware out back on patio with trash and open charcoal bag. Under the couch cushions is popcorn and under couches trash. While looking at pans to use noticed that many cookie sheets had lots of stuff stuck to them .
The manager Jonathan :: avoid him. He showed up at the home and instead of courtesy knocking on the door he climbed up over snow to the porch around back and announced himself by banging on the window and walking further around back .Who DOES that? ( which is some thing no one should do not knowing if the occupant has concealed carry. one of our group started calling 911).
He is rude, condescending, insulting, and kept calling me a liar ,When he started an argument about ADA law & VRBO rules, which he clearly has no knowledge of. David was also involved in the discussion and tried to get Jonathan to leave which took some time . We were pretty upset by the interaction and ruined the mood for our last day there. (He also left with a one finger salute).
The Owner David was courteous and communicable .

Great View, Dedicated Team
We loved staying at this home. The hot tub and the TV were both affected and not working for part of our trip but both the host and property manager did their best to find a satisfactory solution.

Beautiful Mountain Cabin
We spent half of our CO family trip at this beautiful mountain cabin just a mile from Purgatory Ski Resort. Loved our time there!! It was perfect for the 8 of us to be comfortable and everyone had a great place to sleep!! House was well stocked with everything we needed so we could cook and not have to drive into town to eat all the time. Just make sure you get groceries in Durango before you drive up the mountain!! Really enjoyed the fireplace and all the cut wood available for us!! We got probably at least 18 inches of snow the day before we left, but they were very good about clearing the road and driveway for us. Would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a GREAT place to stay near Durango!! Thanks for sharing your home with us for our first family trip to CO!!

Amazing!
Despite it not snowing at all, we still found some amazing things to do! The house is great enough to stare outside the window or walk down to the lake and canoe.
Lime Creek Road (around the corner from the house 6 miles away) was really intense, but worth driving on it all the way through. I’d recommended walking it or taking an ATV or 4 wheeler. There’s some narrow parts that made you wonder why you drove down the road to begin with. Haha! Beautiful views though!
The area the house is in is amazing. So many different hikes and trails all around. Purgatory is a sneeze away.
The house location is awesome. The house itself has stunning views. 5 stars all the way. Thank you.

Perfect Mountain Getaway
My husband and I booked this property for a full month as a way to celebrate our retirement and decompress from years in corporate America. It was absolutely perfect. The views were spectacular and the cabin was everything we had hoped for and more. We got there while the aspens were changing and also got to experience the first snow fall - both were amazing. We spent a lot of time enjoying the fabulous deck during the day and stargazing from the hot tub at night. The property owner and property manager (Dave and Jonathan) were both wonderful to work with. We are looking forward to our next visit!

Best cabin and host in Durango!
This is our 3rd stay at this beautiful cabin home! Every year we add a few more days. We just can’t get enough. It is so clean. The kitchen is well stocked and the host and housekeeper fulfilled our every need during our 10 day stay.
We’ll never bother looking for another rental in Durango. This place is the best. Thanks Jonathan and Regan family, see you next year!
