Custer is a great place to be central for activities in the Black Hills. We hiked in Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. We visited both Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We had a cave tour at Jewel Cave. We rented e-bikes in Hill City for a 35 mile bike ride on the Mickelson Trail. We also drove a loop that went to Devils Tower and Deadwood. Custer has good restaurants and shopping

This property is wonderful. Very clean and well arranged for several people to stay comfortably. Close to down town and area attractions.

The property is old and needs work. Everything from towels to toilet paper was cheap. The listing was not as expected, for example community pool doesn’t open weekends, which is when we stayed. Pool table was in a locked garage with junk on it! With a rental company adding fees, the property was overpriced for what we got. Would not recommend.

Great home with ample space for the entire family. Cozy. Already sent the link to a friend traveling there.

We enjoyed all the room at this house. Everyone felt they had enough space. We wished there were more windows that could be opened as there was no air conditioning and it was very hot when we stayed here.

Vintage home with plenty of space for family. If you are wanting sparkling new, this is not your place. Comfortable beds. Nice kitchen.

The basement stinks! If you unplug the Glade plug ins, it smells musty and moldy. There was a double bed in the downstairs bedroom and it’s supposed to be a queen size. There is mold in the bathroom. The deck is a hazard because it’s not finished. And it’s been that way for 2 years, according to past reviews. There is no working dehumidifier in the basement and the exhaust fan does not exhaust to the outside. Someone finally came to cut the grass but did no weed whipping. When I talked to Oatin about the downstairs he brushed it off.
We loved the upstairs and it’s wonderful charm. But we really needed that space downstairs that we couldn’t use.

We were in Custer for a graduation and the house was a wonderful option for our family. Plenty of space for people and a separate "wing" for our older parents so they didn't have to hear the louder activity when they went to bed in the evening. My mother uses a rollator walker and there was plenty of room to maneuver. We will definitely stay again... hoping for next year at graduation again 🙂

We loved this house! So cozy and homey. It’s definitely an older house but that meant there was so much charm to it! It was a great size, there were plenty of games, books and movies available for our use. The pool table was a great added amenity. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. We especially loved that a dog crate was available for use. We plan to come back with a bigger group and we know that the house will be able to fit everyone comfortably. Oatin was so kind, called to ensure we were comfortable and suggested things to do around town. The welcome book also had great recommendations. It’s in a great location, we could walk to many places plus an easy drive to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Black Hills. We can’t wait to visit again in the summer!

The location of this property is perfect for touring the Black Hills. However, as mentioned in other recent comments, the house is old and needs a lot of work, particularly the bathrooms. They are very old and in need of major work - no shower head in the basement shower, kitchen faucet on the master bath sink, torn shower curtain, among other things. The kitchen and living area were fine, but I expected something more up to date for the amount of money we paid. Very disappointed.

House was pleasantly larger than anticipated. Plenty of beds. The low rating is due to the condition of the bathrooms and general uncleanliness of house & yard. Bathroom toilets, sinks & tubs were gross with chips, stains, & hard water rings. Carpet in the king bed room was filthy with stains in multiple places. The bathroom towels were stiff and not present on the main level. We had to search the house & found them downstairs. The kitchen was dirty, dusty and not stocked well. It didn’t feel like house was ready for paying guests and overpriced for the value we received. For heavens sake, take the huge host fee and shampoo the carpets, clean the silverware, wipe off the front of the dishwasher, & be ready for the next client.

Very cute place which made a great base for our family as we spent time exploring the black hills. Good sized kitchen for cooking.
Was disappointed that the decks pictured were not usable due to being under construction of some kind.
No air conditioning

Outdoor areas were virtually unusable. Huge hole in the ground directly outside the kitchen door. Because th porch/ decking has been removed with no disclosure before we arrived. The weeds would have had to be mowed by us to use the fire pit. We brought an entire bag of s’mores ingredients which we never used. It was spacious but furniture is mostly like hand me downs. Super thin toilet paper and paper towels so we bought our own. Shower curtains are very grungy. Great location and easy checkin. I’m sorry but we wouldn’t stay here again unless it got some tender loving care from the owner.

The house accomodated our family very well and we enjoyed our stay there. The only issue was that the lawn needed to be mowed and the deck & deck furniture was in bad shape. A part of the deck was under construction.

I grew up in this town and was in this house often over my childhood at birthday parties, play dates, etc. This house has so much history!
It was great for our group of 7—plenty of room to cook, dine, and watch movies in the basement as a family. The front porch was also a great place to have an evening cocktail and watch the rabbits and deer in the neighborhood. And the location was perfect for walking downtown and to many restaurants, etc. Also, the city pool is two doors down!
The only disappointments were the grass wasn’t mowed on the property, the pool table wasn’t accessible as the house “manual” suggested we enjoy. And the back deck was gone/in the middle of being repaired. It was a big pit of gravel. So instead of being able to walk right out of the kitchen onto the deck to grill, we had to walk down the stairs on the side of the house to the grills in the grass. The top step of those side steps was rotting and one of our family members fell. So if you plan to do a lot of outdoor cooking and eating, I’d confirm the back deck is actually there as is in the pictures.

The kitchen, utensils, and equipment was in rough shape. All very old. Getting door code late and getting rushed at checkout wasn’t great. Outdoor space wasn’t usable due to in-progress patio construction, so only eating in doors was a disappointment.

Came to Custer, SD for a wedding. Weather was great & house was perfect. Communication on day of arrival was perfect and instructions prior to arrival was very helpful.
We enjoyed the location of the house to downtown Custer. Also, loved waking up and watching the deer in the yard.
Recommend the house for someone looking for a place with room and great location.

Overall, this was a nice home for our family with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. It was nice to have a separate family room downstairs to stay up late and watch a movie. Internet and appliances all worked well. A nice easy walk or drive to downtown Custer. The only negatives are that the basement shower needs some repair, back deck was being replaced and could not be used by us, and the lawn and borders could use a little maintenance and TLC (i.e. around the firepit, etc.). But overall a nice place and would stay here again!

Family vacation
This was the perfect location for weekend vacation with family. Having to drive many hours, this was perfect location with short drives to everything we wanted to do. Had great family bonding game evenings at large dining table. Disappointed back (morning shade) deck was removed, once sun rose higher was able to sit in front deck for morning coffee.

Custer SD Stay
Overall the stay was great. Very convenient to all the activities we wanted to do. The inside of the house was great. There were plenty of sleeping space for our family of 9 plus our 3 dogs. We didn't spend much time outside as we were busy sight seeing, but it would have been nice if the lawn was mowed and trimmed a little more often.

The house was big and roomy, it would’ve been perfect for everyone who was supposed to come with us! We enjoyed the house and all the surrounding sights. Would love to go back during the summertime and stay again.

Check in was easy. Received the code ahead of time and everything looked great. Plenty of bedding in the bedrooms, in case we got chilled or the kids moved rooms. Plenty of room for a couple families comfortably. Loved the uniqueness of the home. Warm fireplace. Appreciated fans in each room as we are fan sleepers. Plenty of utensils in the kitchen for anything we needed. Great place to stay. We hope to be back to the area next year and the place available again. Close to downtown . Loved seeing all the deer! Great sun light in the windows!

Christmas Vacation at Custer House
Our 4 nights stay at the Custer House was great during Christmas 2020. (6 adults, 2 sm children). The home was very welcoming and decorated with a Christmas tree, twinkle lights, red table cloth and poinsettia. The home was clean and comfortable. The property was spacious both inside and out. Both fireplaces worked and added to the festive atmosphere. There was also a lighted Christmas tree in the downstairs. The couches were very comfortable and lots of room for the kids to play. We enjoyed watching movies in the main room. We met both hosts and enjoyed learning the history of the home (about the rock fireplace, year the home was built, builder, etc). Our host Oats was very responsive to any and all questions and/or texts. We would highly recommend this VRBO!

Accommodating and Convenient
We stayed just one day and 2 nights so did not have much chance to have a full experience of the home and town. I will say that the house is very spacious with a few sitting areas and tables, etc. It both rained and snowed while we were there and the electric fireplace was both warm and cozy. One can walk to the main street of Custer where there are shops and restaurants, and Custer State Park is not very far of a drive.

Great location
Cute house and is bigger than the pictures shown. Great location to downtown. Lots of accessories in the kitchen which makes it helpful when cooking. Just about everything is supplied minus your personal items and food. Loved having a dishwasher, washer , dryer, and the front porch swing. Added bonus was the pool table in one garage. Loved seeing deer around the house.
Only draw back was there was no air conditioning but the nights got cool enough the fans they supply cool it down. Overall a great place and nice guy to rent from.
