Very charming old farmhouse , lovely pool and good breakfast
6.0 / 10.0
A charming old, former family residence-cum-winefarm with a handful of rooms just on the outskirts of Guimaraes and above the autostrada (which one doesn’t hear). Vintage wallpaper, floors and furniture, family memorabilia and photos from decades and a century passed; seasoned with a good number of ceiling and wallstains from pipe breakages over the centuries (which of course are impossible to cover as the beautiful old wallpaper cannot be replaced)-, cobwebs on banisters and railings of the patio, weeds on the steps and paths, long-dirty windows yet otherwise spotless clean guest facilities all add a certain charm to what expects the guest and hence it is rated 3-star.
A variety of plentiful sweet and savoury cold breakfast items plus eggs of choice are served at your table from 8:30 (they could vary a bit and upgrade to local cheese and ham instead of Lidl fare though) and a 3-course dinner upon request on some days.
Nice big clean pool in the beautiful garden with sun loungers. Huge communal lounge and TV area and honesty bar on the ground floor underneath the rooms.
10-min Uber or taxiride (6-8€) to Guimaraes. No bars or restaurants nearby or in walking distance. No walking to anywhere from here either, except on the vinyard and property themselves.
We commuted once into Porto, left the car at the free park-and-ride closest to Porto and took the Metro 5 stops right into São Bento station mid-town (train ride from Guimaraes: 70 min).
Sadly the charm of this property does not extend beyond its building and garden as no family resides here. The single owner did not show much interest in hospitality and the guests or their stay and so we felt the atmosphere strangely and sadly sterile for such a warm family home. Also there is no information on the property, area, town or tips for activities or restaurants etc in the rooms to help improve the guests’ stay but would have been appreciated.
The rooms are all but sound-proof of course and we did hear the owner’s TV above us long into the night and every step on the passage outside the rooms, however it did not bother us much and all guests were fairly considerate.
Sadly they leave you stranded with no dinner in-house on days when most restaurants in town are also closed (Sun/Mon).
All rooms face into the courtyard (however the size of a football field) and none has a nature view.

Wonderful place in a beautiful historic setting. Spacious room, modern bathroom, comfortable beds, incredibly big towels. One of the best breakfasts every. Wonderful dinner. Wonderful wine from the farm and tasting. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Garri the dog was also fun. Plush greens and super pool. Near to interesting places Guimarães, Braga, Ponte de Lima ...
Owners can't help it: the highway can be heard a bit from the terrace. But complete quietness in the guestroom area.
Maybe reuse of the gorgious towels should be encouraged to save water, electricity and detergent.

Lovely traditional estate. The owner still lives there, but much of the house is open to explore. We specified twin beds, and we ended up with a 2 bedroom suite that was just beautiful. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was great! Enjoyed talking to the owner and his daughter. Furnishings and antiques throughout the house really made staying there an experience.
We decided to stay for dinner. Thought it was a bit pricey, and not as "exciting" as I had hoped. Also, be aware the the Casa is a few minutes out of downtown. Although not at all far, just know it is not walking distance.

Beautiful surroundings, park full of flowers and plants, pool with shady areas and lots of peace. The breakfast was astonishing and served on the terrace. Excellent wine, incredible location full of history. Our room had a canopied bed, what a childhood dream! Guimaraes with its many restaurants and beautiful old town is just a 15 minute drive away. However, it's also possible to get lunch and dinner at the Casa - you can order it in the office. We were so happy in this little paradise, we didn't want to leave.
The bed was a bit hard, but with the blanket underneath it was fine :)

Lovely historic hotel, beautiful grounds, great breakfast, excellent service.
I did notice some cobwebs in the doorway to our room, and there was a bit of a musty smell. But that’s understandable for an historic property.

This was such a peaceful and restful stay in a well maintained manor loaded with history. The owner and staff were exceptional, giving us very individualized options for meals, snacks , vineyards and winery tour and generally making us feel well cared for and at home in the main house and surrounding gardens. We learned about Vinho Verde and the history of the Guimarães region, and the meals featured freshly picked organic vegetables from the garden and their delicious Casa de Sezim wines. Even the resident dog knew the exact way to charm us. Though my husband is not a pet lover, he fell for his game of “chase the rock” after dinner and was impressed that the dog knew exactly when to call it a night!
We loved everything!

WONDERFUL BREAKFAST
THE OWNER PROVIDED A LOVELY CHEESEBOARD AND WINE WHICH WE HAD IN FRONT OF THE FIRE ON THE NIGHT WE ARRIVED
IT WAS INTERESTING TALKING TO HIM ABOUT THIS PLACE WHICH HAS BEEN IN HIS FAMILY SINCE THE 1400's - a rich heritage
Cute dog

The building is a gorgeous piece of history in every detail. The gardens are stunning and have many wonderful nooks to explore. There is a lovely view over the valley from the gardens. Breakfast or a glass of wine on the terrace -- both great. Breakfast was delicious and comprehensive! The resident dog, Guri, is so companionable and welcoming, the consummate host. The staff were continually cheerful, gracious and helpful. The property is an easy hop into Guimaraes and other areas of the Minho.

The most gorgeous place - elegant, comfortable, affordable, peaceful.
Lovely fresh croissants and rolls for breakfast with fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs & bacon, fresh orange juice. Very enjoyable, especially on the veranda.
Unfortunately we stayed when it was the cook’s days off (Easter Sunday & Monday) so no evening meal was available. But other than that, everything was absolutely perfect!

This is an absolute 10/10 5* surprise. So much more than accommodation. It is a journey to a historic masterpiece. Make sure you visit the original living quarters and the gardens.. and listen to the birdsong. A wonderful place!!
A car is definitely essential.
