*Location
*The restaurant for evening meal & breakfast
Rooms dark, but room on street requires blockout curtains ( lights from across the street at night; bright morning sun); empty handwash container. One bathroom & toilet for 4 adults . (No deodoriser in toilet).

The restaurant food was delicious
The room was the furthest away and up two flights of stairs - with suitcases, that was difficult.
The room was old (expected) and very basic even though it was a "King Suite". Didn't have water of any sorts but able to use the wine glass provided to drink the tap water

Central location, friendly, professional staff, clean.
Fantastic Irish Pub and food.
3.5
Location is great as in the middle of town. The pub, restaurant down below is convenient.
It’s a bit noisy early in the morning with people heading of to work sites for the day from around 4am.

Rooms weren’t serviced at all, we stayed Friday - Monday.

On the road, room windows were broken. not a secure place to stay. the rooms upstairs had cockroches, loud noises from pub downstairs. bit spooky very honestly.

The aesthetic of the hotel was nice and check in and check out was easy.
In our twin room there was only a power socket near one of the beds so i had to charge my phone from across the room, not a dealbreaker though
4.5
The hotel is very centrally located in this most interesting town. We had the one-room suite, which was very comfortable. The furniture was a little dated, but this added to the character. The staff were very helpful and the restaurant food was great.
The early closure of the Irish bar and all the queuing to get food, and then again for drinks.
3.5
it has not changed much in last 30 years and actually more like 80 years . the town is dying and it shows theft of bits from car on street overnight was a pain and local cops don't give a damm
it's old but functional
3.5
Location was excellent.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Food at the Palace was excellent.
Room was reported to have been updated.
It seems only to have been painted and perhaps the carpet.
Bathroom was outdated, no storage and shower base needs replacing.
At times, baby crockroaches could be seen in the bathroom.

The history and view from the balcony was worth it
Maybe a little small and noisy

Location in the centre of town. Beautiful staircase.
Room small; bathroom too narrow. Bed uneven, it sloped in one direction. Noise from the corridor.

This property is outstanding as a significant heritage treasure, in an era when sadly this term is applied totally inappropriately, often spoiled with the use of the word “iconic”. Its presentation at reception level is breathtaking, with a soaring staircase supplemented by a substantial mirror, donated by a person who was a local engineer, but from the US. This person turned out to be a US president, Herbert Hoover, who fell in love with a local whilst there, and never forgot the lady concerned. I measured the main corridor (of rooms) at 81 metres. This is a local jewel, and I am so glad I stayed
Sadly, other aspects, some unfortunate, some unavoidable, militated against the wonderful first impressions. The room was, and is, as was conventional is those days (100 years ago), very small, but well provisioned in the circumstances. The help from reception (first point of all) was very good, but on the staff side things declined from there. Noting that the Balcony Restaurant was No.1 in the city, we wandered in on an early weekday evening. No one at reception there, we looked at where we might sit (looking for a pre-dinner drink at this stage), we close a table (only three of 40?50? were occupied at that time). Awaiting service, I eventually found someone at upstairs reception, who upbraided me for choosing my own table, explaining at length what suited her routine. Hmmmmm……we waited then at the forbidden table for service, eventually ordering some wine, and chatting away (this was around 5PM). The glass was emptied and I flagged that we were ready to order (there was no bar lounge: one went straight to the dining table). On renewing the flagging, the manageress there said “I’ll be back soon” at 5:02PM. Time went by, others were served and left, and we were forgotten/ignored. After 30 minutes, irritation commenced, and at last a very pleasant young man from downstairs (who was excellent in every particular) looked after us at 6:07PM. The manageress reappeared to apologise and said that she had forgotten us. The food, perhaps unsurprisingly, failed to match its high rating. I dined across the road the next night (I stayed loyal to the wonderful old building and its romantic tale for a second night)
