1.) The gardens were very nice with orchids and palm trees, and there was a nice hammock in the gardens. 2.) We liked all the windows and natural light in the loft room, and hearing the ocean at night. 3.) The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. 4.)

1.) The owner, Bernie, was very rude and condescending to me when we arrived and it made me feel very unwelcome. We hadn't communicated our check-in time to him, and he was very angry about it. I didn't know we needed to do this. It would have been nice to be treated with courtesy and given a warm welcome. I wanted to go to Hawaii for the aloha spirit, and Bernie's first encounter with us was terrible. To make check-in smoother, he should send a welcome email 2 days before check in and ask what time guests will arrive, and then give a warm and friendly greeting upon arrival. That would have made a huge difference for me. 2.) We were looking for quiet, and liked that this place advertised quiet hours between 10pm-7am. But it was so noisy. Other guests drank and partied well past midnight, and even rattled our door one night and woke us up. We had to get up and tell them to quiet down. 3.) I paid $2300 to stay here for a week which I think was outrageously expensive for a room, especially a noisy room without a private bath. You had to walk downstairs if you had to use the bathroom during the night. 4.) The coffee was terrible (Folgers), and my husband had to go out every morning to buy good coffee.

The hostel is in a great location, the property is lovely, everything is really clean, the spaces are very well thought out and have everything you might need.

The communication with the hostel before arrival wasn't great. (Struggled to get an answer to my question despite trying multiple communication forms).

Great place to stay. Fantastic location. Bernie is really welcoming and an excellent host. He had many insider tips on what to do and where to go. Highly recommended if you want to enjoy the North Shore!

This was the best place i've ever stayed!!! Created with so much love for details.A really nice garden with a cozy terrace,a kitchen with everything you need,comfortable beds and everything is abolutely clean. Bernie is the best host i've ever meet! Thank you for this wonderful time!

Awesome Experience!!

Very attentive staff. Ask Bernie anything and he’ll happily send you on your way. The location is perfect, just across a beautiful beach and near many great spots. I do recommend to have a car if you really wanna explore the area.

The location is great and the property is really beautiful with a big Lanai to hang out, talk to the other people staying there or just enjoy a relaxed evening. There's sun chairs and a hammock to hang out during the day, a big kitchen with everything you need and clean showers and bathrooms.

Aloha Bernie, words cannot express how grateful we are for your kindness and hospitality you provided for our family. Every day was an adventure and it was indeed the vacation we needed. Comfortable beds, exceptional clean, wonderful outdoor showers, use of boards, snorkel, close to beaches, hikes and the list goes on. It is evident that they love your property because it shows. Meeting individuals from around the world was a cultural bonus. Our only regret was not getting their names so we could stay in contact with them. We will be back to enjoy in near future.

very secluded feel, but was a minute walk to Sunset Beach. Bernie and Maria are the ultimate hosts. Maria took care of us and Bernie gave us all of the best places to go for the activities we wanted to do - hiking, snorkeling, botanical gardens. you name it - he knew where to send us.

Finding the property when first arrived was a little challenge. But honestly that was also a big part of the charm. NO ONE bothered us at all!

we loved our stay at Kalani. it was perfect for our family of four. we stayed in the large room with the bunk bed and our young adult children said it was very comfortable as is the king bed in the room. the common areas are great for hanging out - especially the hammock. there are both communal and semi-private areas for relaxing. we made dinner there one night and you can definitely save some vacation dollars by making some food there. we LOVED the outdoor showers. plenty of warm/hot water with some breeze to clean up after the heat of the day. quick walk to the beach. free parking available. close to everything on the N shore.

Bernie and Maria built a little paradise. I just loved it there. Very nice outdoor showers, clean rooms with comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen. The garden is beautiful und it just wants you to relax in the hammocks. If you have any questions or requests Bernie will help you.

This hostel was amazing. I've stayed in lots and this trumps all of them hands down. The grounds and shared spaces were all kept so well. So laid back and chill. 2 minute walk to the beach. Felt safe to walk around not like being in a big city. Met some excellent people on my stay and we all had a great time cooking and hanging out on the deck. Comfy beds. Outdoor showers were a nice touch. Bernie is amazing and will do his best to accommodate you in anyway.

Wish I stayed longer.

Far above expectations for a low-budget place to stay. It felt more like a home than a hostel in many ways - the garden, the many areas to hang out and chat to people, the warm furnishings and decor, and especially Bernie, the super accomodating owner, who was always checking in on me to see if things were Ok. I arrived VERY late on a Friday night and he came and met me at the bus stop to take me in, which I was super grateful for as a female arriving alone. I LOVED this place and would love to return someday!

The ONLY caveat was that (like many other low-budget places I've experienced) they prefer you to pay the rest of your booking (minus confirmation payment) in cash. I didn't mind this but would have appreciated it if they were upfront that cash is their #1 preferred method of payment so that I could have come prepared and not have had to pay the exorbitant local ATM fees.
