À propos de cette location de vacances
The Oar House - Gippsland Lakes Retreat
Located in one of the prettiest villages in Australia, The Oar House is nestled into a bush block in a quiet street on the outskirts of Metung.
Positioned on a small spit of land, Metung sits between Bancroft Bay, with Lake King at its back. It is a photographers paradise, a natural environmental home to amazing birdlife, dolphins and fish and a wide variety of native animals.
The Gippsland Lakes also offer sailing, boating and fishing in sheltered inland waterways free from rocks, reefs and tides. Even if you don't sail or have a boat licence you can hire a boat locally and explore these safe waters. Just contact our friends at Riviera Nautic to help you out with all things boats and fishing.
Just a short drive or 45 min walk outside the main village, The Oar House is a unique property which has recently been renovated and brought back to life after many years of neglect.
The three storey weatherboard cottage is painted a striking Ironstone Blue with white trim, reminiscent of the houses in the Hamptons. Beautifully decorated with hints of its location and as its name suggests there are oars aplenty, nautical references and artworks. Each window has an individual leadlight window adding character to this unique property.
Relax as soon as you enter this peaceful retreat. You will find all the conveniences of home here, from wireless internet to Smart TV with Netflix and Stan to a fully equipped kitchen and laundry. This charming country cottage has a whitewashed wooden interior and features characterful furniture throughout with polished floors to maintain a comfortable cabin feel. The towering gums outside surround the property and are visible from the very large picture window.
Living Areas:
Walk into the large hallway with under stairs nook and elevated dining space and the largest picture window looking out over the bush. There is a library with a book exchange (take a book, leave a book).
To the front of the house is a cosy lounge with log fire and wall mounted 43 Smart TV.
The dining area has a country pine table and 6 chairs and authentic Welsh Dresser and attached is a fully equipped kitchen with pantry and modern appliances including dishwasher, microwave, slow cooker, blender and sandwich maker.
There is also a laundry with washing machine and dryer.
Bedrooms:
The house is split over 3 levels and can sleep 6 comfortably in 3 bedrooms.
Walk up the stairs to the second level and marvel at the vaulted roof with half moon leadlight window. Here on the landing, it is large enough to have a seating area in the sunny full length north facing window with sliding doors and balcony to the deck.
The bedrooms consist of a super spacious master with more vaulted ceilings (with overhead fan) and king size bed. There are a wardrobe and 32 inch TV in this room.
The second bedroom also has vaulted ceilings (with overhead fan) and a glorious view over the trees down the gully. It too has a TV and inbuilt DVD Player.
The third bedroom has two single beds and is at the front of the house and has a huge picture window overlooking the garden.
Bedroom 1: King Bed with fitted robes
Bedroom 2: Double Bed
Bedroom 3: 2 x Single Beds
Bathroom:
Level 1: Powder Room
Level 2: Full Bathroom with Bath and overhead shower
Outdoor Area:
There is a small first floor sunny deck with two outdoor lounge chairs.
There is an undercover outdoor area at the entrance to the property with outdoor table and 6 directors chairs and a Webber BBQ.
Surrounded by native bushland (the property is on 1 acre) with its own private walkway down to the lake and Cantrills Jetty.
Take a fishing rod (you will find a couple together with fishing tackle in the property for your pleasure) and a packed lunch and wander down the pathway to the Jetty to catch something for dinner (you will need a fishing licence but you can pick that up from Riviera Nautic too). Picnic on the beach before walking back the few minutes home to The Oar House.

The property is a few minutes drive or a 45 minute walk to Metung where you will find a tiny village with excellent local pub (it is advisable to book), a general store, a few cafes and fish and chip shop.
Lakes Entrance is only 15 minutes away by car where you will find all the fishing trawlers and it is here that you can buy fish direct off the boat, walk 90 mile beach or get a great view of the Gippsland Lake system.
We also love Lake Tyers a few minutes drive further along where there is a great pub on the water and kayaks for hire.
Alternatively, go inland to Bruthen where you will find a pretty country village and great brewery.
Further again explore the Buchan Caves, a honeycomb of caves full of spectacular limestone formations.
There is also an excellent Rail Trail between Bairnsdale and Newmeralla.
Then the obvious choice is hire a boat and sail the lakes or fish off one of the jetties or boardwalks or simply do nothing and enjoy the serenity.

We enjoyed our stay at The Oar House. It was very clean and comfortable. Had everything we needed. Was a great place to stay with the dogs.

It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy time with the family.

House is beautiful. Would love to know the history, so quirky. Loved it. Views are spectacular. Very peaceful surroundings. Really enjoyed our stay. Must note the Beds are extremely uncomfortable. The mat in master really needs a good clean or replacement. Understand it’s pet friendly and we did have our fur baby with us but the mat was very off putting for a bedroom. Wouldn’t normally note these things just a little unfortunate for the per night rate.

The oar house
The house is a combination of recycled materials and as such some parts are very dated - e g kitchen. There is also unpleasant smell that you can't get rid of. There is no mosquito nets on the kitchen windows so you can' t let the fresh air in. The location is awkward - and makes it difficult to get both to Metung and Lakes Entrance. The proximity of the so-called private jetty doesn't' help - the path there goes through a swamp and if you don't have a boat is not useful. Far from an ideal holiday accommodation.

Clean & Beautiful
The property was impeccably clean and very beautifully presented - lovely presentation and we felt very comfortable. A few minor issues with check in as the instructions directing us to the key lock box were incorrect and directed us to where it used to be, so we spent half an hour in the dark looking for the box. Also being an older property the windows rattled in the wind and the wind blew the windows in the kids room open as the latches were broken. These minor things would be easily fixed. Overall we would happily stay again and it was easily the cleanest rental we have ever stayed in.
