A propos de ce maisonrental
Eco Friendly Spacious Caribbean House with private pool.
L'EAU:
?avoir notre propre puits

We really enjoyed our stay in Cahuita. The property is unique , clean and comfortable. Loved the pool. The location is great, walking distance to supermarket, restaurants and Cahuita National park, oops cannot forget the ice cream shop too. Kitchen could use a few small things and maybe a toaster but no big deal. Doris is a pleasure to deal with, had problem with internet on arrival and she had it fixed by next day. Overall exceeded our expectations.

Doris was a wonderful and accommodating host. The property is full of beautiful tropical plants and well maintained. We found everything in working order. We enjoyed mornings and evening sitting on the edge of the double doors listening to the birds and keeping an eye out for agoutis, frogs, iguanas, squirrels. Really enjoyed Casa Magdalena.

My only regret is not being able to stay longer! Doris is so attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. I was nervous when we arrived because this is open air concept ( no window screens) and don’t particularly like the idea of critters being able to come and go. But after the first night I was hooked. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle is surreal. Howler monkeys, frogs and birds make for a peaceful morning! The pool was fantastic and a short walk to town and beach was just the right amount of shopping and sampling local cuisine. Thank you, Doris. We will be back!

We loved this property. It was surrounded by greenery and flowers.
we felt like we were in our own little jungle.
We enjoyed watching all the birds over our morning coffee. As per the listing a quick 15 min walk and you are in the middle of Cahuita.
The pool was absolutely lovely. So refreshing, a shallow and deeper end but not over anyones head.
The house has lots of windows that open, lots of air movement and light.
Doris was not feeling well when we were their but still made contact every day to check that we had all we need. She was very responsive to all our questions and concerns.
We would definitely stay again!

Lovely stay surrounded by nature with attentive property manager
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this home, and Ms Doris was kind and attentive to us while we were here.
She picked us up from the bus stop in Cahuita and took us to get groceries, gave us a ride into Puerto Viejo, as well as offered to connect us with local guides.
We loved the pool and it was always cleaned every other day. We really loved being able to get “so close to nature” and saw two sloths in her backyard while we were here, as well as agoutis, birds, iguanas, tree frogs, and heard monkeys at night. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at your home and making us feel so welcome. Loved the animals!!! I even feel closer to bats now, as they did such an amazing job keeping mosquitoes away!

Cahuita Cottage
Everything was pretty much as website presented, although upstairs shower was disassembled and ceiling fan was super noisy unless you turned it on high. Doris offered to bring over another fan but forgot. We made do with the noisy fan. Grounds were beautifully kept and pool was wonderfully refreshing. All in all a fair value in a relaxing location.

Experience Real Costa Rica
My husband and I are planning to retire in Costa Rica. Casa Magdalena offered an excellent opportunity to experience real Costa Rica.
The house itself is in good condition and very comfortable. It is typical of what you will find in a Costa Rican neighborhood. It is not a hotel or resort, and if that's what you want, then look elsewhere.
This house offers plenty of sleeping space, complete with mosquito netting, which is very necessary. The open, airy design allows for a gentle night breeze, and so long as you don't mind an occasional bat wandering in momentarily, then you will enjoy the feel of having the jungle right outside your walls.
The kitchen had enough space and plenty of dishes for the cooking we wanted to do ourselves.
My husband and I visited with four of our children 16-27, and we all enjoyed the stay.
Cahuita is within walking distance, although there is plenty of parking if you'd rather drive to the beautiful black sand beaches. After a full day at the ocean, you might not feel like walking back.
We used the outdoor table and the pool every single day. Most mornings, we cut up fresh fruit and made coffee for our breakfast. Then we'd hang out for a bit, listening to the monkeys, roosters and dogs, while the sun warmed the pool area.
Once we got back from the beach, we cooled off in the pool. The entire week was fantastic.
Doris was very helpful and gracious. She recommended restaurants, and gave us an idea of what life in Costa Rica is really like.
If you want a hermetically sealed room with air conditioning and absolutely no noise, then you probably ought to stay in San Jose, at the Mariott. This house is rustic, fun and charming. You get to experience what life in the jungle is really like. I will definitely come back to Casa Magdalena.

Honest, factual review!
Very, rustic cabin “barn” in a Costa Rica.
The homeowner, Doris is a lovely, helpful hostess. The gardens and pool are awesome! The flora and fauna, neighbourhood sloth, howler monkeys, many different species of birds and flowers as well as interesting albeit, poisonous green and black dart frogs are an incredible Caribbean side, Costa Rican experience.
It is a short walk to the town: Cahuita is a very laid back town, lots of great restaurants, bars, stores, pharmacy, ATM and bank.
There are beautiful, nearly deserted beaches, Playa Blanca and Playa Negra.
Downsides: there are absolutely, no screens on the windows or doors, so you are at the mercy of mosquitoes, bats etc. On a daily basis we killed off numerous cockroaches! In the evening, if the windows are closed, it is too hot without any air circulation. Termites were also certainly active in this wooden structure.
The house is not like the outdated pictures on the website and is not very well maintained any longer.
There are not 2 full bathrooms: upstairs bathroom “en-suite” has one sink and toilet, but no real privacy door. The bathroom downstairs has a poorly, working shower and a leaky sink. There is a shower out by the pool that works quite efficiently.
The only bedroom/en-suite upstairs which has a double bed, plus a crib type or where a child can sleep. There are no other privacy doors on the other two sleeping areas which also have double beds, but one bed/sleeping area is completely open.
No place inside to hang towels or even clothes and no wine glasses or acrylic glasses to take poolside.
Not an overtly, tranquil area with neighbors playing loud music, dogs barking, roosters crowing, cats meowing/fighting and garden burning at any given time. Being close to highway one can expect to hear the big trucks gearing down too.
Fans for white noise when in proper working condition do come in handy, but the only ceiling fan made too much noise when turned at a decent speed for air.
Earplugs are absolutely, necessary!!
We left for 2 nights to tour Tortugero and then left 5 days earlier than our intended stay.
Overall, in our opinion, we do not recommend this particular place, we investigated others similar prices and one can certainly, find a much better place to “camp” out on in lovely, Cahuita.

Rough and beautiful
At first we were put off, you do have to go outside your comfort zone, it's total immersion into local culture, open windows, openings everywhere to the outside bugs and lizards running up and down the walls, ceilings and floor, the property reminds me of a tree house, but is surrounded by beautiful flowers, a lovely private well maintained pool we used daily, the bird watching is the best here. Close to the easy to use bus stop, beaches are pristine, Cahuita is a short walk away. The jungle amazing, The food is so fresh and delish. We did not have a bad meal. Doris is very close and eager to help with questions. A tip if the neighborhood dogs, roosters and howler monkeys make it difficult to sleep the fan works great for white noise at night.

Charming and eco friendly
Had a wonderful time in this house in August.
Short walk to shops, restaurants, bus stop, entrance to national forest and beach.
Pool was refreshing and property is well maintained.

Wonderful month spent in Cahuita!
I spent five wonderful weeks with my son in Casa Magdelena! Cahuita is a great base on the Caribbean, quiet, friendly town with great restaurants and nature literally out the door. Animal and bird viewing in Cahuita National Park is second to none! Woke up to the sound of howler monkeys every morning! Casa Magdelena is a beautiful little Oasis. Neighbors are all around but I felt like we had tons of privacy. There is some neighborhood noise at night but nothing too annoying. I felt very safe as a single mom in the neighborhood. It definitely felt safer than some of the tourist areas in town. Doris lives next door and provides wonderful service and a nice safety net, whom I felt I could approach with any concern (though I didn't have any). The pool is fantastic and we saw more birdlife then I did in the parks and were visited one evening by a two toed sloth! The cottage is rustic but there was nothing we were in need of - we really enjoyed eating on the porch and watching the birds and butterflies visit the garden. Definitely expect a rustic experience - no air conditioning, etc but to me that was part of the charm and it felt close to an authentic 'living in Costa Rica' experience.. We had the cottage 'cleaned' by army ants one night! The only concern was that it was not accessible for my mom who visited for a week and has mobility issues. The standard $10 extra per guest per night charge (common in CR rentals) was also disappointing as it added to the cost of property rentals when family came to stay. I highly recommend this home! Beautiful Oasis and wonderful host!!

We had a great stay in this house. You have everything you need to make food and everything was clean. Doris was easy to get in contact with and offer us a ride from and to the bus station. It takes around 10 minutes to walk to restaurants and shops. The neighborhood is calm and safe.

Rustic but comfortable
My only real issue was the lack of sufficient hot water for doing dishes and minimal cooking utensils.

Einfach traumhaft!
vielen Dank an Doris.

Casa is ok...It's the dogs...
Located 15 min walk from the Cahuita Park Entrance in the West side of route 36...finding our way there the 1st time we asked locals as Google maps is wrong. It's a place for backpackers.
Bring loads of mosquito repeallant if you plan to spend night on balcony or inside. Overall the casa is OK...it's minimal cleanliness, old mattresses and has the rudimentary basic things needed for cooking. A microwave would be nice...but we ate outside mainly so it was not a concern. Pool is nice as we used it on a daily basis.
My big disappointment was: The barking dogs, namely stupid dogs that will bark at the wind and clouds..after ants or their own shadow...bark anytime all the time....@2 or 4am, you will enjoy the full concert between on site roosters and dogs barking plus the (nice) howling monkeys in background with trucks travelling on the 36.
I love dogs. The owner Doris is a nice person, owns a beautifull well behaved german shepard.
Bring good earplugs.

Great place to chill
I spent a weekend in Cahuita with some girl friends. We stayed at Doris' and we really enjoyed our time there. The house is spacious and has everything you may need. Doris was really nice and helpful both before and during our stay. I would definetely come back to Casa Magdalena.

Comfortable with pool as a benefit
Totaly enjoyed our stay. The house has plenty of space even for a family. It's just a bit rustic but private. If you figure out the coffeemaker in less than 2 minutes you win the reward of a great cup of coffee. The location is good for Cahuita restaurant s and park. Very relaxing.

lovely place
the house is spacious, open and clean and the kitchen well equipped. There is a gas stove and an electric stove, both with oven. The garden a mix of flowers and fruits and the private pool is a dream. Wifi fast and stable. We will be back.

comfortable house, nice pool, nice host!
My family stayed for 3 nights & we made ourselves right at home. It's a nice, large house with a great pool, & not far to walk to food & the beach. We also enjoyed the company of Lucky the dog, who watched over us & the property! Doris is a very nice lady & made us feel very welcome.

Fantastic tropical retreat
We loved our 5 days at this all wood house. It is away, but walkable to the hubbub of Cahuita town and national park, and very private. There are tropical fruit trees and gorgeous flowers all around. We saw more exotic birds among the palms and hibiscus that Doris has planted than we did in the park. The pool is a perfect way to beat the tropical humidity and heat. Doris is a helpful and unobtrusive host. Good restaurants and bars within walking distance in town too. (There is a 4 hour direct bus from San Jose.) Open stairways might not be good for small children.

Great deck and pool
We loved the well maintained pool and watched birds from the deck including toucans and honeycreepers. The owner was helpful and friendly and very easy to work with. We were a family that enjoyed the relaxed garden setting. Although we had to be careful crossing the highway to get to town and the great park we enjoyed the house away from the noise in town. It was close to a supermarket and great French bakery. There were a few dogs that hung around that were friendly. We had very few mosquitos but the nets over the beds were the best I have seen.

We loved this place! A very nice pool surrounded by trees and flowers, a banana a tree which seems to be a favorite of lizards so we were thrilled. Take your camera by the pool! The house is cozy, comfortable beds. Appreciated the mosquito netting over the beds. Doris is friendly and very helpful. Ask for her favorite taxi driver, she too is wonderful. Thanks Renata! You are close to the Sloth Sanctuary which is amazing. We would return to Cahuita and stay here again and visit our dear sloth friends again too.

We arrived at the house and was greeted by Doris with a big smile. The house is beautiful, rustic, and spacious. We loved the garden with all the flowers and trees, and the pool was just the right size for our family, and the kids (8 and 12) spent most of the first 2 days there! The house is well stocked for any cooking you need to do, and we were supplied with everything we needed regarding towels and bedding. The beds each had a new moscito net, and we used the fans to keep us 'cool' at night. I had the best nights sleep in the complete darkness of the room, with the fan sending us off to deep sleep. We loved the location of the house, as it was very private and peaceful, but still within walking distance to the shops and beaches. We had some amazing and funfilled days at Casa Magdalena, and will happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Cahuita. Doris is super sweet and helpful, and will be right there to help and assist, should you so desire. Not to forget Lucky, the House Dog, he was so friendly and helped us get rid of any left over foods! Loved this house!!

After 8 hours drive, we arrived to Cahuita and Casa Magdalena, where Doris came to welcome us. The Place was just as advertised, - open unique architecture, rustic charm! Doris showed us around, informed us about the neighbour-hood, shops and foodstore down the street and took off with friendly: good-bye I will see you tomorrow....and we did! A quick stop almost every day, answering questions, if we had any! The internet - TV worked fine, we even had a phone to reach Doris or call a cab etc. Really good service!
Rain or sun, we were out every day canoeing on a quiet river in the middle of a jungle - watching for animals like parrots, slots, racoons, iguanas - listning and seeing howler-monkeys etc. In the little willage, we would eat in afro- caribbean restaurants with reggae and calypso musik. People were always so friendly and the food was really good!!!
Coming back to the house, the Children (8-12) would plunge into the inviting pool, while we had caribbean strong coffee.... Sitting on the big porch, we would see the neigh-bour´s little white hen-sneeking through the hedge and lay down in the grass sunbathing!
One day three well-kept dogs passed by. One of them stopped, very carefully-looking at us
(or was it the food?!) He was handsome , humbled middlesized (brown/white). The children talked quietly to him and he came carefully close enough to get a snack or two..... then he cought up with the other two, waiting down the path, vaggig his white tail.
We felt "lucky" for his visit! The week went fast and we want to thank you Doris for your hospitality and beeing in touch! We recommend this place and one day, we hope to be back to Casa Magdalena and to you Doris and maybe Lucky!!!!(yes, we named him Lucky)

We spent 3 weeks in Casa Magdalena in May 2013. We had a wonderful time here.
During this one-year trip around the world, we stayed in a lot of places and this one was the best!
The house is beautiful. So is the garden. Because it’s all built in wood, we really felt comfortable and had a peaceful feeling. The house is very well equipped, the rooms are big and with the mosquitos fans, it’s gorgeous. We had a few rainy days but it was not a problem because there is plenty of space here!
The pool was a nice surprise for us because it wasn’t build when we booked. And it was perfect. Big enough so adults can swim, but not too deep so our three children can well play, even the youngest (2 years old).
The neighbours (and their animals !) can be a little noisy, but it is not that annoying. The children could have their nap on the afternoon.
There is all that we can need by walking distance.
The beach was a little bit far for us because we have young children, but you can easily reach the see in 15 min walk.
Doris, you are a very nice host, very thoughtful , we wish you all the best.

Doris is a wonderful host. Cahuita is a stunning location both visually and with an abandance of wildlife, but is a slightly dangerous location. We had 2 pair of shoes stolen from our porch and our car was rifled through. Luckily, we did not have anything in the car so nothing was lost. Although 2 pair of shoes is a small price to pay, it's something to be aware of if you plan to travel here. We were warned about being on the beach at night, but didn't realize the warning should be extended to our rental home. The home was very comfortable and we prepared most of our meals in - especially dinner.

This house is beautiful! When we arrived, all of the windows were open and it felt very clean, fresh, and homey. It is surrounded by a nice garden, which attracts lots of birds and other small creatures. The house feels safe and secure; there is no reason to worry about your things as long as you lock the door when you leave and put special belongings in the small safe Doris provides. Also, the mosquito netting over the beds assures comfortable sleeping. The town is about a 10-minute walk away, but there is a bakery and grocery store nearby. This is helpful if you prefer to cook and save some money on meals.
Doris was a very friendly and helpful host. She picked us up right on time at the bus station and gave us a small tour of the town. She was very accommodating and understanding about our first visit to Cahuita.
While this house is lovely, it is not for people who would prefer a secluded place. A good amount of neighbors live very close by and have many pets which tend to wander onto the property. Also it is beneficial if you have a bike or a car, as it makes the trips back and forth to town, the beaches, and the national park easier.
Suggestion: If looking for a tour guide for local sights (canopy tours, Bribri, national park, etc.), seek out the man named Kenry. It is a small town, so he is easy to find. He gives cheaper rates for local tours, speaks English well, and is very fair to tourists. DO NOT USE WILLIE'S TOURS!

This house is gorgeous -- beautiful surrounding gardens make it feel secluded from the neighbors, a symphony of birds chirp away and a porch and a balcony are great places to relax. We came here for five nights and it was a fantastic place to just decompress and relax. It's in a small neighborhood about a 10-15 minutes walk from the town of Cahuita. There's a grocery store and an awesome French bakery 5 minutes away.

The four of us had an enjoyable, comfortable stay in this house for a week, while exploring and getting to know Cahuita. Doris is a gracious host and was instrumental in us having a good experience in her house. We loved the open floor plan, spacious equipped kitchen, and the grounds, full of birds in the morning to watch! Would recommend this as a place to stay while visiting the Caribbean side of Costa Rica

After staying in hermosa and chirripo, we decided to visit cahuita and stay at casa magdalena.
Doris was nice enough to help us with a ride to the house from the bus station and was waiting for us when we arrived. The house was gorgeous, surrounded by giant trees and flowers. I liked that we were in a neighborhood located just outside of town and not in the whole tourist-mix of cauhita, it was very relaxing.
Everything we needed was there-towels, linens, etc. The fully-equipped kitchen was wonderful to have- with the mercado just down the street, we could make our morning coffee and stay in to eat if we chose to do so. My favorite thing was to get up early, make coffee and wake up to the sounds of the monkeys and birds(a few roosters, as welll....but expected here!) on the front porch.
My husband and I were traveling with another couple and we had plenty of room and privacy. We rented bikes from town for $6/day so we could get groceries and such, but it's not required to get around. Cahuita is a beautiful town that has not yet been spoiled by tourism and i highly reccommend getting to know some of the locals; we had a lot of fun meeting some of the people.
Also--upon coming to the Carribbean side, I was told to be so careful about everything--I was super paranoid! This side of CR has a bad rap. I had visions of people stealing my purse or breaking into our house--it kind of ruined it for me at first. Just be smart. From what I could see, the people of Cahuita are kind and laid-back---the monkeys on the beach were the only ones that came close to stealing my stuff! Doris, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful place with us! We hope to be back soon :)

My family of four plus one other adult really enjoyed this spacious home with lots of windows. The internet worked great, we made ample use of the kitchen, and our favorite thing was lying in the beds under the mosquito nets at night with the windows open watching fireflies in the trees. We liked the "get away" feeling of the house and the owner is local and very responsive to questions. Just a note to families with very young children: access to the beach and town of Cahuita requires a short walk along and the crossing of a highway. The walk is about 15 minutes to the beach. Our 5 and 8 year olds maneuvered this fine and enjoyed the walk, but a stroller might be needed for younger children of families with no car.
