We loved our night on the river. Our hosts were the nicest, welcoming people. We had just come from fishing and they shared their freezer space with us. Every thing was clean and we had great views. There is easy access to the river if you don't mind a few steps. Consider it a bonus workout. Check out the "kenai flip" technique before you stay so you have the right gear to enjoy the river. The neighborhood was nice and quiet and a great place to get a run in.

This is a different sort of review since my wife and I unexpectedly found ourselves unable to enjoy this property. That said, we still want to leave a review to share the outstanding efforts, communication and understanding this host showed us. Even though we weren't able to make our trip, it was the outstanding communication and empathy to our situation that we want to comment on. If you choose this property, you will find an outstanding host experience.

Lovely property. Beautiful view of the Kenai from the deck.

and ready access to the river. We used it as a pit stop in a longer trip with a different destination, but if I wanted a place for fishing, I'd be hard-pressed to imagine a better one.

Great location, accommodation, and views
We stayed here on two separate occasions and will come back when revisiting. Janet and Marv are great hosts and wonderful people. The bed was very comfortable and the place offered everything else we needed for our stay. The river area is a nice place to sit and take in all in, we shared it with a moose on our last night there.

Fishing fun!
The property is on the Kenai River and the view is fabulous. My husband was able to catch fish on the bank of the river! Cozy and warm accommodations and well stocked kitchen. There is a washer and dryer available which is a must with the Alaska rain. We definitely would stay here again!

Great condo on the river
We had a great stay in Soldotna and at Riverfront Vacation Condo. The condo was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. It is centrally located on the Kenai Peninsula so everything is a short drive away. We just missed the Red Salmon run but everything else went just great. Thank you Marv and Janet.

This riverfront, two-unit condo on the river was perfect for our family visit to Kenai. Weather was gorgeous (80 deg), so sitting on the balcony to eat breakfast/dinner with the Kenai river flowing by was fantastic. Condo is one of two one-bedroom units (we were in Sourdough) that I believe are mirror images of each other - so could accommodate two couples or small families equally. Our unit (believe both) are one bedroom with sofa sleeper in living room area. Usually hate sofa beds, but this one has a blow up mattress topper that is fantastic (takes about 10 seconds for auto airpump to fill). Good HD TV and cable/sat with Wifi (a bit slow, but ok for non-millennials) Kenai river is just down some steps and along a walkway where you can fish or enjoy a 6 hour sunset (dusk) and watch the numerous bald eagles after dinner. The river was very high, deep and very fast during our stay, so wasn't able to catch fish, but owner has courteously provided access to rods/reels for use (provide your own terminal tackle). Also, a freezer is available for fish you might catch there or from taking any of the numerous nearby guided tours. Condo is well furnished for cooking and there is a pay washer/dryer available. Deck is great (partially shared with other unit) and has nice barbeque which we used nightly. The unit is on a very quiet, private street, but main street Soldotna (Safeway, etc) is just a couple of miles away.Janet and Marv live just next door and are very accommodating. We were unsure of our time of arrival (driving from Talkeetna) but Janet provided excellent instructions on how to find and access the unit. They are as available/responsive as you need them to be and likely great resources for information on local services/guides/etc. In addition to the fishing equipment available, there is also a basketball hoop in the driveway, badminton rackets/birdies and a nice lawn area (with swing set) next to the wide, flat parking area in front. One note: I mentioned that the river was high and fast (running 15mph according to local guide) during our stay. As shown in picture of chairs by bank of river, there is no fence or barrier (nor should there be given focus on preserving natural riverbank) so need to be careful and parents in particular should not allow children to play/run or be unattended in this area if water is up.Look forward to staying with Jan and Marv again.

Wished we would have stayed longer.
Loved the view of the Kenia River from the deck and would have fished the river bank if we would have stayed longer. Janet greeted us with a filet of salmon which I cooked on the BQ, it was the best salmon we have ever eaten. Janet made great suggestions on who to call for a guided river fishing trip and a day of touring the Kenai Peninsula. We were provided with cooking utensils and dishes for fixing crab and any gear we might need for keeping dry on the river banks or in the boat. Thank you for helping us make the most of our way to short stay. Hope to come back!

Absolutely the Best!!
We just returned home after a two-week Alaskan vacation that included three wonderful days at this lovely condo.
Almost better than being at home, this property is beautifully decorated and sunny with great views from the balcony. So very comfortable you can't help but relax from the moment you arrive.
Our host, Jan, was very accommodating and available as needed for any special requests.
This was the perfect place to start our Alaskan vacation. Soldatna is a great place to be as a home-base to explore all that the
Kenai Peninsula has to offer.
We can't wait to return again!

Beautiful Place
We have stayed in places all over the world and the Kenai River Retreat is now one of my favourites.
We were in one of the upstairs 1 bedroom apartments which was very comfortable, well equipped, tastefully furnished with a flair for the outdoorsy motif and with a balcony overlooking the Kenai River and passing bald eagles. You can fish for salmon just below on their own private property of the riverbank and they even have some fishing equipment you can use. How cool is that !
Access is easy and in front of the house is a large parking area. Everything is well maintained. The owner/hosts live in a house right beside so you get a level of service, security and help you do not get with absentee landlords.
There is no dining table but instead is a counter with several chairs and a small table on the balcony for al fresco dining.
Nearby in the town there is a good selection of restaurants, shopping and services. We travelled to the Kenai for the scenery and to fish both of which are excellent. Many good local guides are available which is a good idea if you are not familiar with the area or fishing regulations and techniques.
We were pleasantly surprised at the size of Soldatna and the number of stores, supermarkets and services.
Communication with the owners was always timely and pleasant and we even shipped a pair of fishing waders to Janet at her suggestion so we would not have to travel with them.
The only thing that was missing - more time to stay there ! I highly recommend this place.

Outstanding place---- highly recommend
I do a ton of research and this was our third July in a row to the Soldotna area. The first two trips we had okay places to stay, nothing disaster but the Kenai River Retreat was a blast. We thoroughly enjoyed the shore access and all the available equipment. We had our own rods but theirs looked to be in good shape. Nets, coolers, freezers, waders, although you don't really towade in because the bank positions you right in front of the sockeye. We broke pliers, we borrowed theirs. Marc and Janet are both genuinely invested in helping you have a great time. The condo was just as the pictures represent. It was clean. All the appliances worked great. The oven did decide to not come on for some snap cookies I was obsessed with baking soooo I baked them in Janet's kitchen. HA! She insisted. I relented. Who can resist a cookie. Janet had the repairman in the next am and it was fixed. I liked the cross breeze from the deck screen door, flowing through to the back bedroom window. We were concerned it might be too hot. Not the case. The queen bed was comfortable and I would consider it a bigger than average queen. I rarely book anything besides a king but this worked well. I thought worse case, we will use the fold out sofa. We love the neighborhood area they are in. Not too far out of downtown Soldotna, about a 5 minute drive to Safeway, Fred Meyer a little further. So, we will definitely repeat stay here for another 10 nights in another year or two. The only recommendation I would have is a water filtration system. It took us a couple of days to get used to the slight sulphur smell (well water) you get when you first turn on the faucet. We buy bottled water anyway so it really didn't affect us that much. Bottom line. I know they have a ton of returning guests and we will be one of them.

Disappointed
We had anticipated having easy access to the river and a full complement of fishing gear available. We were disappointed to find out it was only rods and waders and not full gear, including lures/hooks, and that we had to walk down 60 steps and traverse a narrow walking path through overgrown weeds and wetlands (the weeds covered the boardwalk at one point and we couldn't see where we were walking). The kitchen is not well supplied. It lacked some basic supplies, including measuring cups and a spatula/scraper. There is not "165 feet of private bank fishing"; it was closer to 20 feet, although this may be because the river was high. The wifi is slow and hard to access. When we asked for a recommendation for a salmon guide, we were directed to the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce. The host was very kind, friendly, and welcoming, but overall I'd have to say we were disappointed.

Loved it & would definitely stay again
We stayed for 4 nights & used this place for day trips to Homer & Coopers Landing. Great central location, very quiet & we fished off the riverbank below the unit & walked to the park down the street. Comfortable unit, great views, very friendly hosts & only a couple minutes from town & stores & restaurants. Laundry too which was helpful. We would highly recommend this homey place to others!!

Don't pass this place up
Stayed at the Sourdough unit for three nights and was one of the best places that we stayed on our two week vacation. The unit was perfect for the two of us and Janet and Marv were great folks and their hospitality just added to our great time spent there. This place is perfectly located for all of your adventures on the Kenai Peninsula. Having traveled all over the state from Denali to Seward and Homer, without a doubt on our next trip to Alaska we plan on spending all of our time at this location.

Excellent place to stay in Alaska!!
We stayed a week in May and could not have been more pleased with the facility. The facility was immaculate and very comfortable. Marv and Janet were so kind and welcoming and were there if we needed anything but just let us do our thing. Beautiful view of the Kenai river and very centrally located to anything in Soldotna. We fished the Kasilof river that week and it was about 11-12 mile easy drive. The owners were so nice they offered to let us come back and clean up on our last day of fishing prior to departing for flight in Anchorage. Check out was noon but no one else was checking in after us so they were very accomodating. We will definitely return to Kenai River Retreat and have no hesitation about recommending this facility. It was very quite and the washer/dryer came in very handy!! We had a very pleasant stay and could not have asked for a better place!

Great place to stay
This is a great place to stay and the owners were very nice and helpful. We arrived late in the evening and the owners helped us to order a pizza and get it delivered. I would highly recomend this property and would stay again the next time I visit Alaska. Soldotna is a nice town and this property is very close to town. We also traveled to Homer Alaska which is only a day trip from this property.

Kenai River Alaska experience.
We arrived for a late season stay just before winter set in. The condo is very well equipped, spacious, and has a wonderful view of the Kenai River. There is a nice boardwalk that leads down to the river right in front of the condo. I tried my luck at catching a late run silver salmon while a bald eagle sat perched on a rock nearby. We went hiking at the Kenai Wildlife Refuge just minutes south of town. The staff will give you excellent directions to nearby hiking. Our stay felt like a real Alaskan experience! Your host, Janet, is very warm and friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Second Time Around!
The first time we stayed at the KRR. was in 2011. We had such a wonderful experience we returned September 9, 2012. The location is perfect. The view is fantastic and the hosts are "the best".
I have been traveling to AK yearly since 2005 and have experienced alot of different accomdations, and the KRR is TOPS in my book.
If comfortable, clean, quiet, and fantastic hosts are what you are looking for in accomodations....look no further! Kenai River Retreat is the place for you!

Kenai Riverfront trip
Kenai Riverfront was relaxing and a very wonderful place to stay. We stayed 5 days there and the location for hiking, fishing and seeing sights was excellent. Janet was very helpful but never in our way. If you needed them they were their with helpful tips on fishing which they had or eating out. We mostly cook our own dinners after long days of hiking! We would go again and agaIn if we could!
They meet all our needs and more! Thank-you for a wonderful stay and your are great host!

KRR-Great location, people, wildlife, fishing, accommodations, value
Stayed at KRR for a quick 3 night in October 2011. The accommodations were perfect. Janet was very flexible with our tentative travel plans, even up to the last minute. She stayed up late to welcome us to the property, which was greatly appreciated. Marv and Janet provided a number of great tips and hints about local places to eat and drink, shop, fish, and hike! One of our favorite parts of the trip was cooking a big breakfast (with all of the supplied kitchen utensils and cookware), and eating on the porch overlooking the Kenai. The location is ideal, as you're away from civilization, yet anything that you may need is short 2-3 minute drive away. During the salmon season, you can catch plenty right off the back yard. 10/10, couldn't ask for more. Thank you!
