Location, staff and convenience.

The mattresses were absolutely horrible. Theres a metal bar that run through the middle for support and it just makes sleeping extremely uncomfortable. Other than that everything else was pretty great. We did notice that in the day room and couch area there were little insects also biting our exposed areas not sure if its a common occurrence or what but our ankles and arms were ate up.

It is located in Old San Juan. You can visit the castles and La Perla in minutes.

It could be very loud after midnight because drivers can honk the horns outside.

The location is perfect. I spent a while looking for the best spot in San Juan for staying 6+ days and I have to say that this hostel went beyond my expectations. The staff is very kind and help you every time with recommendations or any requirements you have during your stay. There are a lot of restaurants nearby, supermarkets, touristy places and of party places as well. You can walk to go all these places.

The hostel has no breakfast included.

The hostel is very cute! and i love the open sitting area. It is very clean and the rooms are a decent size

There are no plugs for the top bunks. When charging my phone at night i would have to leave it on the floor by the bottom bunk.

Nice location, clean facilities, even greater staff. they were so friendly, if you need anything; they were quick to help you. It was my first hostel, so it sets the expectation bar really high, but I know not all will be like Fortel Hostel unfortunately.

refrigerator did not work, but I have heard staff say that they are working on getting it fixed on different occasions. Also, some nights the street can be noisy due to noisy people or construction, but the construction occurs in the early morning.

The location was fantastic, the cleanliness amazing. It was my 1st Hostel experience, but not my last. When I go back to PR I would definitely stay there again. Did not feel any danger walking around by myself.

The Uber I called needing to go to the Port never made it (apparently due to traffic) Not the Hostel's fault, but something to keep in mind if you need to go somewhere.

The central location gives the ultimate historic and cultural experience in a beautifully restored building: simple and comfortable—like olden times. Jaye was a fantastic host and comrade. one night we sang, danced and toasted to life with rum.

Unfortunately the refrigerator gave up due to no fault of the hostel’s but there was a small one

Great location, very helpful staff, comfy beds. They also provide a small breakfast for free if you want to (free instant coffee and oats).

I stayed at the hostel twice in a week and they never had hot water. Bathrooms don't have windows nor proper air ventilation correctly working so it's super humid, the floor is always wet and dirty due to the water coming from the showers that can't dry, with consequently lot of mosquitos everywhere. The wifi didn't work in the room.

100% would recommend this hostel. location is unbeatable in viejo san juan, the hostel is beautiful and just very comfortable and convenient and the staff was the best! i stayed in a 4 female dorm, Carlos, the manager helped me plan my trip to culebra and even drove me to ceiba so I could take my ferry at 4:30AM, I AM SO GRATEFUL and will definitely be back!! also got to meet a couple of solo travelers and had amazing conversations with them.

The location is awesome, and the people staying at the hostel were pretty nice and social. I would stay here again.

I couldn't get a consistent wi-fi signal in my room. Also, the restrooms could use a little detail cleaning (on top of the soap dispensers, the toilet paper dispenser).

I met a fellow dorm guy whom I met the following week in Vieques Island .

Carlos at the front desk was extremely frightening and downright rude to me on arrival. He had charged my bank card though I had repeatedly explained and sent messages saying that I will pay cash . Prior to arrival. He stood up and told me to leave and go find somewhere else to stay . I was tired after 10 hours of travel. I was shocked as he shouted at me. " I am the king ". I can tell you now with 100% certainty that I will never ever book Fortel Hostel again and I will tell anyone I know, never ever to stay here . This was a horrific experience and nothing was done about it.

This hostel is in a very central location with easy access to the old city. It is within walking distance of a lot of sights and restaurants. The hostel is charming with a nice common area. Very large lockers in the rooms. I also appreciated the security with key cards to enter the building and each hostel room. Overall, it is what you would expect of a hostel.

I don't usually stay in hostels anymore and this validated that choice. While the hostel was nice and the beds were comfy enough, the floors of the communal restrooms were always wet (as to be expected with many people showering) and the 'quiet hours' were not adhered to at all. If you are young and like to stay up and party then this is a great option for you.

The staff were really nice and the other people staying at the hostel were lovely and respectful. The location was incredible as well, right in the centre of Old San Juan.

There was construction going on on the same building as the hostel, which started at 7:30 or 8am with what sounded like jackhammers. I didn’t know about this until it woke me up on my first morning and continued all day. I know the hostel has no control over this but it would have been good to know before getting there. I also think the kitchen and bathrooms could have been cleaner. I didn’t see them being cleaned while I was there. It’s a shame, because it could be a really great hostel.

The room for 4 people was very spacious with tons of room and had really big lockers in the room, where you could fit a fair carry-on luggage and other stuff without a problem. AC was great, the common area was beautiful and the staff was friendly. The location is ideal, right in the center of Old San Juan and it's a short walk to all the city's major attractions and great restaurants and bars. Overall, a good place to stay in San Juan.

The wifi connection in our room was pretty bad (but it was working fine in the common spaces) and we had to use our data to have internet in our room most of the time. The bathroom floors were often dirty (just the floors, toilets and showers were always perfectly ok), as people were leaving the floor wet and then the next person would enter with their shoes on, causing it to be muddy. Having bathroom mats available would probably solve this problem.
