I was planning on camping a couple of nights near Keswick, weather not looking good for a late arrival so decided to stay at Derwentwater Hotel... so glad I did! - At check in I was greeted in a really professional manner, in the bar the staff were super friendly! That was my opening night. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic, set me up fuel wise for my planned ascent of Skiddaw (walking past a farm I camped at 47 years ago on my first Scout Camp!!) My hike up Skiddaw, descending to Keswick and then back to hotel was great (nothing to do with hotel of course) BUT on return all staff I spoke to were interested in my day, to the extent that I was chatting to the hotel manager for over an hour!!!! This level of customer service and interest is rare and is really valued by me! Thank you to all at the Derwentwater Hotel for making my stay so enjoyable. If you want a pristine, brand new hotel - well, pay the price for it - but if you want great service, an amazing breakfast and the perfect location head to Portinscale!!

We stayed 2 nights at the Derwentwater Hotel. It’s a bit of a quaint traditional English hotel. They seem to have a new and more modern wing and the original bits as we had 2 rooms and one looked a lot newer than the other.
We would highly recommend getting the package with dinner as you get a 3-course dinner, which is great value and not to mention delicious. Breakfast is a full buffet spread which was great too! Sheets were clean and good water pressure for the shower.
There’s also a nice little bar, and some board/card games in the conservatory. Parking at the back of the hotel is £5 per night though.

Thanks very much to the staff for accommodating my late arrival after midnight. Nice hotel, comfortable bed, good location, great staff.

Disappointing. Unfortunately this hotel really does need a lot of work to be anywhere near as nice as other places we’ve stayed in Keswick. The saving grace of this hotel is the staff members as they were all polite and friendly.
Cleanliness is a big issue, black mould next to the wardrobe, crumbs in the drawers, plates and glasses in the corridors. We booked this hotel from a point of it being a good location, walking distance to Keswick but other than that there really isn’t any other reason to stay here. It needs a lot of work, the sink in the bathroom had a huge crack in it, the bath panel had holes in it. We’re just lucky we were only staying for one night. The curtains weren’t long enough to cover the windows. We did all see the humour in it as we were on a trip with our friends but if you’re looking for something comfortable and relaxing I wouldn’t recommend it.

We booked a superior room and they gave us a classic (downgrade) we were too tired to make a fuss the night we arrived. Complained in the morning to be fair they refunded us the difference. The man on reception was a brilliant lovely man polite and helpful. The lady who was looking after breakfast did an amazing job in difficult circumstances. Some of the breakfast was missing as theyd been locked out of the store cupboard. It wasnt a particularly nice breakfast. The hotel was very run down. Which was a shame as lovely building lovely gardens. The grout in the bathroom was black round the taps were slimy. Carpets werent nice. Walls were plastered in places and not painted. The doors were chipped. Not good. I understand that covid knocked the hotel trade but the hotel was nothing like advertised. Felt sorry for the staff who were great

We cancelled our reservation upon arrival. The furniture is old and filthy. The bed was broken. The room felt cold and institutional. Property is old and not very well kept. Photos are very misleading.

Though we came pretty late to the property, we had staff to take care of our check in etc. And also morning breakfast was very good, and the staff were very nice and friendly. Overnight my friend had to work in lobby area for his work, and staff made sure that he was comfortable there.

Nice gardens and communal areas (bar, reception hall etc) were fine but my room was very dated and on a slant. The shower was difficult to work and made a very loud noise when on. Everything creeks and wallpaper peeling, hole in ceiling, most of the tv channels didn’t work. However, bed and towels were clean and I had a good stay for a no frills accommodation. Could be a beautiful hotel with some investment.

Location was ideal and grounds were lovely with good views from the garden, however the building was very dated and poorly maintained. The interior was old and in need of decoration. My room was just about adequate but once again needs updating and decorating. The bathroom needs modernising, floor tiles were cracked, tiling around the toilet was cracking. Mattress was poor and not very comfortable. The door furniture needs updating. Generally the room and the parts of the hotel I viewed looked unmaintained. The staff on duty were ok.

When we arrived we were taken to the apartments over the road although we had booked a room within the hotel. We found this apartment to be shabby and well in need of a refurbish.there was a hole in the bathroom door both settee/sofa beds appeared very dirty no tea coffee milk etc although there was a kitchen area and this was an upgrade we were told. When we complained staff were helpful in finding a room within the hotel which was also in need of a refurbishment

Friendly staff and room fairly comfortable. A great location and lovely garden. This hotel is tired and in need of updating. Breakfast was ok. Some issues with the hot water. Could be cleaner.

You cancelled my booking less than 48 hours before arrival because of a water issue.
Despite that, I continued to receive emails regarding my stay, asking if I wanted to upgrade my stay, check in experience and now this…
I was unable to find alternative accommodation in the Keswick area at such short notice and continuing to receive emails from yourselves (presumably automated and not checked?) were not helpful.
I suggest you modify your automated reply system.

Didn't get the room we booked, looking at a wall as a view until my partner sent bespoke an email then we got the room we booked in the first place plus they were no house keeping for the room unless you asked for it . Room needs updated. Dining room not open, had to order off bar menu. Staff painting in sitting area around us while sitting there.and will not be back at this hotel again

We booked an over night stay at this hotel for a great price at short notice. Love the location, a picturesque walk into Keswick takes around 25 Minutes. Our room although didn’t have a view was immaculate. The staff were extremely friendly and professional.

Great staff and service, hotel dated, could definitely do with a kettle in the rooms, the location is awesome

The hotel was undergoing some redecoration work during our stay but this did not spoil the experience. The staff are very helpful and made our stay a pleasant one.

Our room was fine but the bathroom had a puddle next to the toilet and as a whole could only be described as grotty. The grouting had black mold on it and where there had been handles in the bath (broken off) there was also black mold. We asked to change rooms but unfortunately there were no other rooms available. Reception did move us the following day to a deluxe apartment which was lovely but we had no idea if was self catering with absolutely nothing provided like soap, tea, coffee and having had a drink at lunchtime couldn't drive anywhere to buy these. Dinner in the hotel on the first evening wasn't great, my burger overcooked and onion rings had disintegrated, wrong puddings came out and when the correct ones did, cold custard and the inside of the puddings were stone cold. The staff were lovely and did everything they could to help but I would never stay here again unless it was completely refurbished. It may be cheap for the area but you get what you pay for.

Stayed for 2 nights with a dog. Hotel in the process of refurbishment. Our room was lovely, great view of the large beer garden with a short walk to the lake. Very friendly staff and good food. 20 min walk into Keswick which is very dog friendly too. Will be back.

Avoid! The hotel advert is not a true representation of what we had seen. The hotel was so outdated it was like going back to the 80’s, the bathroom was disgusting 1) unfinished filler everywhere 2) mould everywhere 3) cobwebs everywhere so not been hoovered in a while. All in all waste of money.

Great hotel and although not spanking new it has the most fabulous location on banks of Derwentwater and is super dog friendly, Keswick town just a 20min walk away. Fresh decor in bedroom and super comfortable bed.Lovely staff especially Sue, breakfast and bar meals were good. Beautiful sprawling gardens were the perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the evening sunshine. We can’t wait to return!

This was an excellent hotel if travelling with your dog; the welcome and outdoor facilities are very good.
The room was warm and attractive.
It was a shame the nice restaurant wasn't used for evening meals. The bar area got pretty crowded and is fairly basic. The TV was very obvious and needed subtitles on if it's to be helpful.
The staff were helpful and courteous.

Very basic, very dated. Shower was cold only

Out of date, not very clean. Mold on walls and gross shower curtains. Good location with a beautiful walk onto Keswick

Whilst staff on check in were pleasant and location great. The hotel needs condemned. The corridors smell like an ash tray, stained carpets lead you to your room. Nothing like what is advertised. Beds as hards as rocks, rotten broken furniture. Black mould in the bathroom and a missing part shower screen. Management who refuse to refund you.

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights at quite an expensive rate and was hugely disapointed.
The hotel is dated and in need of extensive upgrading. The room was a reasonable size and comfortable enough, however, the shower barely worked the whole stay. The water trickled out and it wasn’t that warm. I asked if it could be repaired on day one and the staff said they’d try. It did not get fixed the whole stay and this seemed to be a common complaint from friends who were also staying in other rooms.
On check out I complained and was told to email the manager for compensation. The stay was 3 weeks ago and after 3 emails and a phone call I am still waiting for a response.
The breakfast was also pretty poor. There was hot buffet which was overcooked to start with and then left sitting out for a while with it being refreshed regularly and very little other options.
The staff were all helpful and friendly though.
The standard of this hotel vs the cost really doesn’t add up. A perfect example of hotel in a tourist area that doesn’t need to try hard for the business.

Location is great nice walk in to Keswick about 20 mins. Food and drink very nice and a good price. Staff all friendly and helpful. Hotel needs some renovation work but for a couple of nights it's a lovely place to stay.

Service was excellent as were the staff.
A coat of paint in places would lift the appearance of the hotel greatly.
Slight issue with shortage of hot water.
Location great and would definitely return.
0.5 / 5.0
To start with the positive - the lady on reception couldn’t have been friendlier and more helpful. Also, the room was good value compared to other locations in the area.
Unfortunately, the above can’t make up for the state of the room. It’s the worst hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. Everywhere you looked there were issues. Peeling wallpaper, holes in the walls, mould, bodged repairs, broken furniture, stains on the carpet, heaps of dust.
Furthermore, the bed itself was like sleeping on a concrete slab. We had a horrid nights sleep.
There was a strange smell from the bathroom and the bedroom door was rickety and made a loud bang every time another guest shut their door.
As we were only there for one night, we didn’t raise the issues with staff. We just left as soon as possible in the morning.

The hotel used to be very busy in spring and summer but when we were there it was not. Breakfast service was hit and miss for our 3 night stay due to staff not turning up for work. Laying out the self service hot food before the tea, coffee, bread for toast etc which guests would normally choose first was inefficient.the staff who were there for breakfaxt service were very polite but it was clear this was not their normal work. On the other hand, dinner although served in the bar was efficient and the selection from the bar meals menu was extensive. The best option to choose is half board. The rooms were not serviced during our stay and we were invited to ask at reception if we needed anything.

The garden around the hotel is in a beautiful position on the lake but is overgrown and unkempt. The hotel could do activities from the lake side ie canoeing and lake tours
1.5 / 5.0
It was in a great location however the rooms need updating and cobwebs removed. Beds were comfy enough but we only stayed for 1 night.
The bar area etc was ok and outside was lovely just the rooms that let it down.

Nice old building in need of a complete make over. Breakfast was ok. Keswick and civilisation a good 25 minute walk away

Greeted by the loveliest chap on reception, couldn’t be more helpful or friendly. Room was huge with amazing view over the lake. Dinner was lovely - short staffed but young lad who looked after us was fantastic. For the location and price you couldn’t ask for more.
