This is a stunning property on the lava cliffs near the town of Pahoa. The house is clean and spacious with a large comfortable kitchen/living/dining area overlooking spectacular ocean views. At night it was amazing to hear the crashing waves mixed with the chirps of the coqui frogs. It was easy to take nearby day trips to Hawaii volcanoes national park, Hilo, and South Puna. All our family agreed that this was one of our favorite rentals. We would love to stay here again.

This house...is just OK. Ocean in the back is amazing. However, it's far off the beaten path w no cell service. This house has 3 lockboxes. There's a non-working lockbox on the back porch, 1 non-working by the garage and 1 on the back side of a pole by the front door that does work. We kept sending pics & videos asking if we were trying the right lockbox and they kept saying yes and we just weren't pulling hard enough to open it. Clearly they didn't know which lockbox was the right 1 or what it looked like. We were outside in the rain trying to get in the house for over 30 minutes trying to contact mgt w/ limited cell service. We were late to our dinner reservations b/c of this. There's no A/C in the home (not in the description), and not enough fans provided to cool it down. It's not in the safest feeling neighborhood, and there was a rowdy party across the street playing excessively loud rap music. We were very nervous being there alone as we didn't have any cell service to call for help if needed, and you have to sleep w all the windows open so as not to die from the heat. We were nervous all night that someone from the party might make their way to the house. We hid our belongings before heading to dinner b/c we were worried about the types of people wandering about. The hot tub was broken. A curtain was missing in front of the toilet by the front window in the master bedroom. We stayed 1 night and cut our losses and found another place to stay

We had not realized that the house was not air conditioned, and upon arrival it was HOT, but truly as soon as you get things opened up it cools off pretty quickly. The property manager was very responsive to questions - the hot tub wasn't working and she was able to tell us what to do immediatley. And FYI there is an alarm system panel inside the door, but no alarm to set (this is not mentioned in the house book). The only thing we did not love about this property was how far it is from everything. This side of the island does not have as many restaurants or shopping areas, and it is a long drive to anything, anyway. I would recommend this place for a "get away from it all" vacation - the kitchen is well equipped and the home and yard really invite you to stick around and relax.

The house was exactly as advertised-right on the ocean. Our evenings were spent having drinks and enjoying the scenery. The pool was great for our kids. Unfortunately the hot tub was not working at the time, which was a bummer, but normally it would be running. The rooms were nice. The house is a little ways from restaurants and grocery stores, so be sure to stock up on food before getting there. Nice walks from the house as well. Be sure to watch the sunrise at the end of the road if you're awake at that time.

We stayed at this property for our honeymoon, it was absolutely perfect! Beautiful views from all over the home, pool is excellent, hot tub was great and the lava rock ocean views were incredible! We saw a family of turtles in the water every day that we were there! I recommend them to everyone! In addition to an amazing property, the customer service is even better! We had two issues (caused by us) and they were so helpful and very sweet even though we messed something up! :)

It was fantastic being that close to the ocean, having a pool to toss the kids in daily while the adults planned the next adventure, and seeing the stars come out at night. The beautiful carved doors throughout the home were a surprise bonus. They have a policy where you can leave your extra food or sunscreen or other things for the next renters if you don't want to take them home, which has resulted in a very well stocked house. Our kids had fun with the games and puzzle cabinet. I would recommend that the property management replace some of the window screens, as a couple have small tears where bugs can get through if you're opening the windows to cool the house down. Closing those couple of windows solves the problem, once you realize it needs to be done. Also, be aware that you will be hearing the coqui frogs at night. That was a bonus for our family, except one kid who had some trouble getting to sleep the rare evenings she wasn't worn out from swimming, snorkeling, beaching and hiking. You might want to discuss with your party before committing. It worked well for us, though, and we'd happily stay here again!

The kitchen was well equipped and the large tables both inside and on the patio nicely accommodate our family. In addition to the spacious eating areas, there was also a large Island, which enhanced our meal preparation. The pool was nice and refreshing while the hot tub was great for relaxing after a day of touring. Hale Mar was nicely appointed and had many furnishings that allowed for an enjoyable experience.Hale Mar is about a 30 minute drive from Hilo, so we tried to organize our shoppings and sight seeing to reduce the driving time in order to maximize our time at this oceanfront property. The local (close proximity) restaurant Kaleos Bar & Grill is highly recommended.

Loved our stay at the Hale Mar! It was the perfect get away house for our family. It was quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed reading books in the hammock. Swimming in the pool and sunbathing on the lounge chair. The master bedroom is spacious and comfortable. Would def recommend a stay here.

This house has the most beautiful view I’ve ever stayed at!! The yard, pool, and hot tub were wonderful! The house was perfect for our family of five. Had all the necessities needed for our stay. Our kids kept hiding out in the upstairs master bedroom because of the view and the ocean breezes! It was nice to get some laundry done and relax poolside after a few busy days of touristing. You won’t regret staying here-it really is paradise!

This property is breathtaking. We spent a night on the other side of the island at this place and it was everything and then some.

We loved our stay! The house is well equipped, beds are comfortable, pool was a blast and the yard was beautifully landscaped. Plenty of space to swim, play football in the yard, swing on the hammock, have a cocktail on the porch, etc.. The best part of the house was the views and sound of crashing waves as we slept. Plenty of towels, linens, and blankets. They provide beach towels for the pool. A few notes- there is no air conditioning (as is common in Hilo due to high energy costs). So, when you first enter the house it will be stuffy. Open the windows and turn on the fans. It will air out in no time and we never felt hot after that first entrance. The road to the house is 4 miles down a slightly hilly road. It is no big deal to most people, but it did make our kids sick to their stomachs. This does not change my overall impression of the house nor location, but just something to be aware of. About 45 minutes to Volcano National Park, 15-20 minutes to the grocery store and 30-35 to downtown Hilo (airport and restaurants).

Loved our stay here. The view of the ocean right there in front of you is so amazing! And the kids loved the pool. If you love being right on the ocean then I highly recommend this home.

Our family had amazing stay. The home was impeccably clean, thoughtfully furnished and professionally appointed. No detail was spared. The groundd, pool, and hot tub were wonderful to enjoy the ocean views. It is a little further from Hilo than we had anticipated, but that was mostly due to the rush hour traffic. We will definitely stay again!

Our family of 5 loved everything about this house! It was spacious enough to spread out in, and has a wonderful yard, filled with many beautiful Hawaiian plants and trees, and lots of birds and gecko friends. We spent a very relaxing 5 nights here at the end of March, and enjoyed the pool and hot tub and wandering the cliffs out side the fence. My favorite memory will be sitting on the lanai outside the master bedroom with my coffee, watching the sea turtles swim in the waves. There always seemed to be a number of turtles playing around and keeping me fully entertained! The master bathroom has been renovated since the listing pictures were done, and we were surprised with an enormous, beautiful walk in shower. Our teenage daughter was thrilled, as she loves nothing more than a good spa like shower! The kitchen was well stocked with everything that we needed, and there was plenty of towels and beach towels. The laundry room was great, and I made good use of it, as we spent a lot of time snorkeling at various beaches nearby, and swimming in the pool. There was a great cooler and lots of beach supplies which we used for our excursions. Laura really has thought of everything, and was wonderful to communicate with. We fully recommend this wonderful house, and hope to be back again some day!

We had a great stay; very different from our beach stay on Oahu, but in a good way. The surrounding tropical foliage makes you feel like you are in a beachfront rainforest. The Indonesian vibe of the house is pleasing and very much complements the landscape. This is a great place to stay to visit Volcano National Park. The master bedroom is amazing. The sound of the ocean and the tree frogs lulled me to sleep each night. I have not slept that well in a very long time. The pool and hot tube are great amenities as there is no ocean access.
