Beautiful waterfall!
The breakfast was not good.
I do like that the money supports someone who does so much for his community.

We stayed in the river cabin and it was the most beautiful location. We could hear the swimmable waterfall (just a few minutes walk away) all night long. So peaceful and a very special memory! A once in a lifetime opportunity to stay in a place like this.
The place was not very clean. It didn't matter to us too much as we just treated it like camping BUT it doesn't take much to get a cleaner to give a place a thorough clean every now and then. This was our only complaint!

Breakfast vouchers for Mr.Ed’s Bakery were a great extra gift in addition to the excellent stay. The house manager (Housten) was extremely welcoming and attentive as well.

Super nice property in Honomu. Staff was friendly, helpful, easy to contact via Whatsapp. A lot of things can be borrowed, to the beach or for a day out, which is great. Can cook on site.
It’s dirty. I guess guests are meant to clean up after themselves but that means that it’s a mess. we could deal with it but if I had kids I would expect better. Can see in photos gecko poop all over (that was bedroom table), and fridge was straight up nasty. Can hear everything through the walls of main house so better hope your neighbors are quiet!

The location is beautiful. We loved that it was secluded, yet not far from the local attractions. I appreciate the availability of beach toys and chair to use during our stay. I also loved the balcony and living room area.
Unfortunately, I don’t feel it was made extremely clear that this property is a shared/communal home. Nor did I know that it is an earth friendly home. Those details would have been nice to know because we were looking for more of a comfort stay, since this stop was at the end of your vacation. Our stay ended up being more of an adventure than a relaxing retreat. I also wished I would have known that our room would be upstairs with the bathroom downstairs. I was traveling with my elderly mom and she mentioned it was difficult to get to the bathroom at night and would have been much more comfortable with a room on the same floor as the restroom. But truly the only thing that made our stay less than a 10 we’re the other guests, which is out of your control. There were two young girls who would come in stumbling around at 2am, slamming doors, felling around, talking and laughing as if they were the only ones staying there. There was also a couple who roomed downstairs who thought they owned the place and had their clothes and other items laying over all the chairs in the balcony and their food in all the shelves in the fridge. We would have not stayed if we knew we were sharing space with others so my only recommendation is to make it super clear that this is a communal property, similar to a hostel.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of the house. Cats were good company! I loved the waterfall swimming hole! The upstairs room was warm but, it was quite humid in the afternoons. I loved without using my curling iron…😁

Running water
No river view from “cottage”. Place feels sad, worth $50, not $170. Plastic under sheets crinkles and makes one sweat. Dirty pans with non-stick surfaces scratched and shedding. Bugs in the plastic box of utensils. Sink appears dirty. Kitchen primitive. Bunk bed swayed every time one turned over. Lots of mosquitoes.

Every single thing!!! this place is magic!!! I almost don’t want to share it with anyone to keep it for myself:) but also want more people to experience the magic of it and for this earth friendly, self sustainable, beautiful small business to thrive! I couldn’t even imagine the place this amazing! if you’re looking for all inclusive high end hotel - look further. but if you want to really experience island life in its natural habitat - this off grid gem in the middle of the rainforest offers all you can need and so much more! I lack words to describe how amazing this place is. there’s 5-6 rooms in the main house where you share kitchen, living, and two bathrooms with other guests (never were any inconvenience). one of the bathrooms is open air - you have to experience it! so magical!!! there’s also downstairs kitchen for the guests who are staying in cabanas. we had a great opportunity to experience both. our first night we spent in one of the cabanas - which, when I read what it is I was cautious - hammocks - hm, don’t know how that will work out - but it was amazing! and cabanas have all you need, and are very nice and protected. there’s also two grills and a beautiful porch for your bbq nights. big territory with fruit trees that are shared with guests on season, drinking water from the filter on tap, fridge, stove, all the needed kitchen supplies, complimentary coffee, and amazing atmosphere!!! while we we’re staying in the house we got to meet 5-6 cats that hang out outside and got to know manager Aaron - super friendly, helpful and just amazing person! Thanks for everything Aaron! there’s umbrellas (we never used), flashlights, bug spray, and even coolers and snorkeling gear you can borrow. the view is breathtaking! the drive is so beautiful, that it was a highlight of every morning!!! the rainforest in all its majesty on your way to and from the place!
loved everything!!!!

The location is just divine and the hammocks so so comfortable to sleep in. It was an exceptional experience for our first trip to Hawaii - unique and such value for money.
Nothing - it was fabulous! the only thing I would say is that you don’t want to be worrying about an expensive or low profile car on the road in and out - it’s a little rough and pot holey

Beautifully kept property in tropical paradise. Outside hammocks comfortable for all shapes and sizes. Central areas clean and well equipped. Staff and other guests v friendly. Good wifi for the teens. A wonderful unique travelling experience and the private waterfall an absolute showstopper.

Very cool location. Pretty close to Hilo. Hammocks were comfier than expected. Dirt cheap. I felt way more at home here as a solo traveller than other places which seemed to attract more couples etc. The people who worked there were super friendly.

We really enjoyed the location in the middle of the forest.

I woke up in the middle of the night and I saw one of the best sky of Hawaii.
The sounds of nature surrounding the cabanas are amazing.
A taste of real wildness in a cozy accommodation
We arrived very late in the evening (after 9pm) and the staff was not able (in conditions) to help us finding our accommodation: in particular the cabin is very far and hard to be found autonomously in the dark without detailed indications. Do not plan to arrive after dark, or be prepared to spend an hour looking for your bed.

our cabin needed some upgrades

Beautiful location in the middle of the rain forest. Nice to fall asleep to the sounds of nature.
We used the cabanas - very comfortable hammocks and shared areas were clean.
We also had the river view family house - very spacious.
Not the easiest place to get to - had to drive through a ravine.

I was so surprised! I was little scared about my back to sleep in a hammock...BUT I havent slept that good and felt so fresh in a morning in YEARS. Staff was so nice, little patch of old forest nearby, waterfall. Can be access from Hilo by bus FOR FREE. just a short walk from Honomu. Chockolate famr nerby worth to visit, ..a lots of staff can be borrowed for free (water shoes, snorchel , beach chair etc..) Magical outdoor shower. Would deffinately come again if on big island, but this time maybe with a car :)
bikes can be borrowed but were in a bad shape and cannot be used in reality, ton of mosquitos near watterfall...good to know before you go there for the first time :D. At least one electric socket would be nice in cabana (electricity is there so it is not a huge problem. Almost no shops /groceries nearby even in Honomu, can be a problem without a car.

Beautiful property. Unique experience. Liked swimming at the waterfall.
Kids didn’t like the mosquitos, spider and bugs that come with the rainforest environment.

The location was awesome. The beds were comfy. The breakfast was great!
The room is in a quirky house that is sooo hot with only two ineffectual fans to keep cool. Everything is "Off the Grid" which means, the toilet takes 10 minutes between flushes to generate enough water to flush again; they don't provide paper towels in the bathrooms...you share a germy towel with all of the other guests...limited electricity (which I assume is why there is a lack of strong fans). The driveway entrance needs more gravel so cars don't bottom out so badly on it. The outdoor bathroom needs blinds on both sides so girls can take a shower without flashing all of the cows. It's my fault for being in a hurry when I booked, but from the photos, I was expecting little individual cabins rather than the shared house. I knew there was a shared bathroom, but I thought it would be more like a campground...not waiting around the house for a bathroom hog to get out of the shower. Also, the bottom of the bedroom doors could probably use a door sweep on them. We had a gecko in our room, which took 10 minutes to get out. We were trying to catch and release him, but he ran out of our room and crawled under our neighbor's door instead. We kept a towel rolled up on the floor the rest of our stay.

The location is close to the Akaka waterfall, which is definitely a place you would like to visit if you stay in this place. The shared kitchen and bathroom is just downstairs and very convenient. You can see clear stars and sunrise when it's not cloudy. Most importantly, you cannot beat the price

Talk about an Oasis! Staying at Hamakua House and Camping Cabanas made the trip to the Big Island that much more magical. Sleeping in a hammock seemed silly to me at first, but it was more than accommodating and honestly quite comfortable! The location is amazing, you really are in the heart of the rainforest. Falling asleep to the sound of the rain and waking up to the most beautiful lush green vegetation was pure bliss. And the outdoor shower is definitely a highlight, might I add. Staying in a shared space, I was afraid of not having privacy or just feeling plain uncomfortable being around strangers, but I was surprised just how private our space was while also providing the opportunity to make some new friends. I am so happy this place popped up when I was searching for a place to stay on my trip! I would 100% come back here and I tell all my friends they have to check it out also.

It was perfect! Secluded, but not too out of the way. The staff was nice, sat and talked to them for a little bit one night. I was off the property by 8:45am and didn't return until 9-10pm, so I basically just slept there. I did not have an issue using the bathroom or showering at these times. It was exactly what I was looking for! Highly recommend Mr. Ed's Bakery! Stopped in every morning for coffee, and ate a breakfast sandwich there 3 out of 5 days I stayed (closed on Sundays). The personal waterfall is amazing! If you don't need a lot of amenities and plan on exploring, this has everything needed.
The zipper to close the curtains at the front door was broken in cabana #4. Wasn't a huge issue, I crossed the drapes and put a chair leaning on it to keep it closed.
