The location and staff were great, the general vibe there was nice. There are extra toilets downstairs and showers for use. There are 3 dogs and some cats that live there who are friendly 🥰 bikes available if you like too.
The pillows and beds were pretty uncomfortable and the shower basically didn’t work. You got a dribble of water and it wasn’t warm. Super hot rooms, 1 fan across two beds but it wasn’t easy to sleep.

Un hostel muy chill, con buenas áreas comunes, cortinas en las camas, mucha naturaleza, con bicicletas para alquilar
Se cobra un extra por pagar con tarjeta

The hostel is great! The staff is very friendly and helpful and the location is perfect. You could walk in town or rent a bicycle from the hostel to get around. If you prefer a bigger bed it’s possible to upgrade. The animals give the family feel. I would definitely book again.

Good location to get to the beach or the town. Nice chillout area and helpful staff.
Most rooms get pretty hot during the night.

My stay at La Ruka was amazing, the hostel is so spacious, has various little corners to hang out and so many hammocks everywhere! The staff is amazing, so friendly and helpful, they have been a joy and all added a special something to my stay, as well as the dogs and cats. They offer free classes in the morning which was a great way to socialize and develop new skills! I also went into the ice bath that I couldn’t recommend enough! The mattress and pillow were super comfortable, and the bathrooms clean at all time, the open communal kitchen with free bananas is really nice as well!
It is a bit outside of the city center but perfectly centered to visit all the beautiful beaches that the south Caribbean has to offer, all easy to reach with a bike. They advertised this place as a home away from home and it really became just that!!

Location
I was expelled from hostel as a result of a European woman tourist complaining that I disturbed her sleep while I was trying to find my insulin vile at night. I was thrown out ,without having a chance to explain to the manager what happened. It was deeply disturbing to be kicked for trying to find my insulin in an emergency in the middle of the night. I will file a complaint with the costa Rican ministry of tourism. They pack so many tourist I a small room, that you don't even have space to open your suitcase fully because it's so crowded. This is the worst experience in my 40 years of extensive travel. I would not recommend that hostel to my worst enemy.

- Quiet and closer to the beach than the hostels in the town
- clean
- friendly people
- cute rooms and shared spaces
- double beds available in dorms for not a lot extra!
- quite loud at night since more in forest area with wildlife and/or rain, but earplugs should be fine
- not a great equipped kitchen but fine if you’re eating out
- a bit of a walk from town but great if you’ve already experienced staying in town
- no social activities and generally a quieter hostel than for meeting loads of people

the location is perfect for getting to the beach & main strip in puerto viejo, the staff were so friendly and helpful
The shower/bathroom for us to use was also the main bathroom that other guests in the hostel used (it was by the kitchen) and the shower was outside with only a small curtain to close it, so privacy was a challenge. This bathroom was also pretty far away from our room.

One employee was really rude

Cool enclosed vibe with lots of plants, friendly staff, can rent bikes $10 for 48 hours. Location is a bit further out than the town centre but closer to the best beach
Not as social as I expected given communal kitchen and common areas. Lockers outside one of the rooms, and rooms quite small so can be dark and get smells from bathroom. Communal kitchen not the best equipped.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hostel was very clean and tidy. The kitchen and shower facilities were also very good. The outside area was very nice and well covered and the pool table was a nice thing to have.
There was nothing I didn’t like about the property

Common area had a good vibe
Room for private bunk beds was higher than anticipated for what it was. There was also construction work which meant belongings were covered in dust, I think a price deduction should have been given for this. The room was very noisy, completely understand they have no control of the dogs barking but the 5am wake up call from them wasn’t ideal so if you’re looking for a quiet place I wouldn’t recommend as there’s also a lot of traffic noise from the road

Very kind staff, all places are clear, lovely common areas, adopted dogs living there makes the experience even more enjoyable.

The beds are comfy and I like that you have a curtain to get some privacy.
The kitchen area is nice and they have a pool table.
I didn’t like that the lockers were outside of my dorm.
Also there is one bathroom for 8 people (plus one additional shower and toilet outside), which is definitely not enough. I often had to wait to take a shower.

The kitchen is well organised.
The staff was not flexible at all - disappointing when you're used to the nice Costa Ricans. They only reminded us about the things we were not allowed to do, they are very strict with their curfew. One day we were reminded three times to be quiet at 10pm even though we weren't even loud in the first place. I didn't feel welcome at all, the whole hostel gave me very bad vibes.

Nice reception area, nice location
The staff weren’t friendly to us, their manner of talking made us feel bad when asking for stuff (e.g. towels or turning on the light outside), the sockets in our room didn’t work and at the start the light also didn’t work. Felt pretty expensive for what you get.

Very cheap, nice garden and free coffee…
It was too hot in the room! The fan doesn’t help as we have curtains in each bed in the dorms… It’s a little bit far from the centre… The man at the reception was kind of rude and unfriendly and seemed to be annoyed when I asked him some information at the morning… The ladies were ok… you can find much better and more central for the same price to be honest…

The lady who owns the hostel is really lovely and gave us a full tour of the hostel and was really helpful. You can hire bikes here, and the communal space, kitchen and bathroom facilities were fine! Nice cold water filter and there was free coffee advertised for the morning.
We found the dorm quite claustrophobic - it was very hot and only 2 tiny fans blowing intermittently on 8 beds. Even though each bed had a curtain for privacy, you felt quite close & intruding on other people's space. Not really any natural light coming into the room so it's not so nice to hang around in there.
We thought the price we paid for 1 night was expensive for the quality of the dorm - after this hostel we stayed at accommodation much closer to the centre of town, with a private room, private bathroom and balcony for exactly the same price per night.

So many lovely details! They had yogamats, free bananas and plantains, free coffee and everything was clean. There were hooks in the bathroom for the towels, everything worked well. They thought about everything a traveler needs in a room :)
the staff was friendly but kinda distanced. They were a big group but we as guests didn't feel welcome in that group. Also, they had strict rules about when to be quiet and when to stop using the kitchen and the common areas and then they had a party in the patio (common area) of the hostel until 3 in the night and it was impossible to sleep.
