PERFECT LOCATION - LUXURY COTTAGE - STUNNING VIEW - HOT TUB
- Mt. Hekla

Perfect place to explore Island!

This is an amazing property, even better than in photos. Don't let the distance from Reykjavik deter you -- the drive to and from is breathtaking and if you are seeking a serene getaway then this is it.

There is a feeling you get once you walk in that sets the stage for your time in this cottage~ I can describe it as an exhale. We appreciated the attention to details in the communication from the owners. We stopped at a grocery along the way from the airport and cooked our meals. The kitchen had all that we needed to do this. The location was perfect for us as we ventured out each day to go exploring. Once back to the cottage we SO enjoyed the views of the fjord and amazing sunsets from all rooms! We gave ourselves time on the evening before we left to clean as requested and it was not that big of a deal… in fact you feel good cleaning knowing it will be for the next person coming to have a beautiful experience there. We hope to visit Iceland again and would absolutely book this cottage again!

First as other have mentioned the checkout chore list is quite extensive for those who are used to staying at properties where full professional cleaning is added in, especially if you have an early departing flight - which we did. HOWEVER, with some planning it’s easy to accommodate. We just packed disposable camping towels for our departure morning since the towels take about 4 hours to completely wash and dry and we had to head to the airport at 5am (but having access to a washer and dryer was well worth the added chore and allowed us to travel very light). Then we did the majority of the cleaning the night before - vacuumed and mopped right before we walked out the door. No big deal. Please, please do not let this deter you from renting this property - it’s perfect! The hot tub on the bay was incredible - we got several rainbows and rainbow cloud viewings, the sulfur smell from the geo thermal wasn’t bad at all - we used the hot tub every night after hiking all day. The location is perfect as well to adventure north or south and the hot springs at the end of the bay are amazing and very well priced and far less crowded than the mainstream ones. The king bed was beyond comfortable and the kitchen had everything (and more) to cook delicious meals. The Nespresso machine provided the perfect cup of coffee to match the morning views.

Before we arrived we received instructions on entering property, along with directions for hot tub, WiFi, etc.
When we arrived, we were very pleased that the description of the property was accurate, even exceeding our expectations.
We stayed end of April 2024. We knew we were at the end of season for the Aurora borealis, but were still hoping. On the third night the skies cleared, but no luck. The fourth night, clear skies again, very cold and windy, but kept checking, and they appeared for close to an hour long show. Again the next night while in the hot tub, she put on an amazing show, even able to see the colors with the naked eye, what a treat.
The hot tub was wonderful, instructions to fill the tub were clear and easy to follow. So nice to sit in the natural hot spring water. Great views from the tub, and the glass surrounding the tub area really helped quell even the gustiest winds.
The kitchen was very well appointed. Well stocked with dishes, cutlery, utensils, pots and pans. Everything you could need for any meal small or large. The Nespresso machine was a godsend. The tap water is as good as any spring water you could buy.
Having a washer and dryer in the cabin came in handy.
The bedrooms were as stated, cozy with comfortable beds.
Didn't use TV, but noticed large selection of DVDs.
The location was great, about 40 mins from the city, close enough for groceries, or a day on the town. Great for exploring the island, so much to see near and far.
Excellent!!

Hot tub, Hvammsvik Hot Springs and just 30 mins from Thingvellir National Park and start of the Golden Circle. Easy drive to Reykjavik. Majestic vista of the fjord. Completely lived up to our expectations!

This is a beautiful place in a beautiful location. We stayed also in a panoramic glass lodge before coming here on the south coast, and we liked this place better AND we saw the northern lights here! It’s a very spacious place which we very much enjoyed.
Because I believe in leaving honest reviews, I will tell you two cons that I thought about this place:
#1. We booked it for the location and also the hot tub, but we didn’t wind up using the hot tub at all due to the smell. Everything runs on geothermal which is fantastic and we support that 1,000%! But the smell was unbearable, I considered getting nose plugs just to sit in the hot tub and try to enjoy it. But I knew it wouldn’t have been enjoyable so we just went to the hot springs up the road instead.
#2. Make sure the day that you are checking out, you give yourself plentyyyy of time to complete the “chore list” that they’ve left for you. Not a fan of any place that gives me a cleaning chore list but this was the most I’ve ever seen. Washing dishes is normal. But this list went as far as asking us to mop the floors and make up the guest beds. Which makes me think that each guest is responsible for the cleanliness of the next guest. I understand this is a 2nd home to the owners, but I think you need to just build in cleaning fees and get someone to upkeep the property instead of asking your guests to do all that while they are enjoying their stay.
Overall, for the price, I would absolutely recommend staying here!

Jakob and Elsa's cottage is a wonderful blend of comfort, quiet and accessibility. We loved the coziness of the space even on wet, windy days. The northern light viewing was spectacular on clear nights and the proximity to Thingvellir National Park was really nice. We cooked most every meal in the well-accomodated kitchen. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom met our needs very well.

This home was perfect, it was right on the inlet and close to glymor and Hvammsik hot springs.
The home was clean, bed linens were soft and comfy and everything was great for our stay! Perfect for our family, plenty of room.

Spectacular views from inside the house. Well stocked and clean. 40 minutes from Reykjavik, but the drive was beautiful and never got old! Plus, the location gave peace and quiet. Hot Tub was great too. I would highly recommend!

Pleasantly located next to an idyllic fjord and only a few dozen kilometers from Iceland‘s main attractions along the „Golden Circle“, the house offers a great hub for excursions throughout the southern and western parts of this beautiful country. The interior is furnished in Scandinavian design and offers all amenities needed by the adventurous traveller. Major bonus is the hot tub located on a cliff overlooking the fjord.

We had such a great time at this beautiful house! Everything was perfect. There are so many cozy places to enjoy the view over the bay. The hot tub was awesome and a great thing after a long hiking day. There is anything you need for a longer stay with your friends or family. We hope one day we can come back and enjoy this lovely place again. Jakob and Elsa were super friendly and answered pretty quickly to our questions. Thanks for everything!

We loved our stay here. The house was very nice, it had everything we needed. Great location to explore the Reykjavik area, the Golden circle or the Snaefellsnes pennisula.

My wife and I had a great week long stay at this quaint home located about 45 minutes outside of Iceland's capital city of Reykjavik. The views were amazing outside the home and from the living area. Communication and the responsiveness of the owners was excellent, they usually replied within 12 hours or less for any questions we had.
House was well furnished and had anything we needed to make our stay comfortable. While it was a little drive to get to any grocery store and/or gas station, but the views and the house itself were definitely worth it. Only 30-40 minutes from Iceland’s national park and a great starting point for any adventure you may want to partake in while in Iceland.

This is a wonderful, clean, well presented house in an amazing location with awesome views and the most comfortable beds.
The local area has a lot to offer if you do not want to go further afield.
I recommend Hestamiðstöðin Borgartún. for a local horse riding tour.
In answer to previous reviews - yes you do have to clean the house but this does not take long if everyone helps , towels wash and dry overnight , there is light from other houses but this does not stop you seeing the aurora.

This house is cute and cozy. We found it small but spacious enough and the kitchen had what we needed. The roads can be dangerous in the winter but we had decent weather. Communication with the owner was superb. However, the cleanliness was subpar. Our sheets appeared to not be washed. There were long hairs on the sheets and the pillow. That’s just disgusting. And they have a policy that you have to wash the towels before you leave and clean the floors. The towels seemed fine but the floors were not. Also, this all should be done by a property manager to ensure it’s done properly. The shower doesn’t have a way to block water from getting on the floor so we turned it towards the shower wall but it wasn’t as ideal or comfortable. Finally, the hot tub had sadly not been cleaned. The house is lovely and I believe if they just get a good housekeeper and stop relying on guests then it would be superb.

First we want to say thank you to Elsa and Jakob for the great time that we had in their really beautiful house. Our stay there at the Fjord was the best and most relaxing time of this year for us. The view over the fjord is absolutely fantastic and the house has everything you need. It is very well equipped with everything and very comfortably furnished. Our boys really enjoyed playing the table football. Elsa and Jakob took very good care of everything. We enjoyed the time so much and can absolutely recommend this house. The time there will be never forgotten for sure! Thanks very much again!

We loved this cabin. I originally thought it would be difficult for 4 adults and two children to share a bathroom but this home was perfect and comfortable. They had a high chair and travel crib available for our baby along with games for our 5 yo. The location is amazing for spotting northern lights, we were fortunate to see them twice during our stay. We used the geothermal hot tub when the weather was decent. Wonderful after sightseeing all day. I would note that the hot tub and the laundry machines both take a vary long time to complete their cycles. It was truly the perfect home base for day trips throughout the west and southern areas of Iceland.

My husband and I stayed here as a home base for traveling through Iceland for our 20th anniversary. We loved coming back to this home each night. Relaxing in the geothermal hot tub under the northern lights will be a memory we forever cherish.

The house is compact but has everything you need. The view to one side is rural however looking in the other direction there is an industrial complex with lights on all night. It may be an Icelandic thing but surrounding houses also had there lights on all night as well, we had been expecting complete darkness.

We spent four glorious nights at Jakob and Elsa’s house. The location is perfect. Easy to get to Reykjavik and the Golden Circle star sights. The house sits on the edge of a fjord - we saw whales twice! It is extremely well equipped. Everything in the kitchen we needed and a good powerful shower. The beds were very comfortable and good quality. The highlight is the surrounding deck and views. On one particularly sunny day we didn’t move. It was captivating. Jakob was always responsive and friendly. We couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend.

We could not have loved our stay more! The cottage was amazing, the view was outstanding and the hosts were excellent. We have never seen such beautiful sunsets as we did from the cottage deck and we loved all the thoughtful touches in the house. We had a wonderful time and can’t wait to visit Iceland again!

Jakob's house is beautiful, clean and quiet environment. We enjoyed very much our stay there. I do have a comment regarding the house rules for future travelers' reference:
When I searched and reviewed the house description before I booked, I did not see any mention of guests needing to clean the house and to wash bathroom towels/dry them before checking out. They do have the check-out time set at 1:00pm, so if your flights or schedule not rushed, you do have some time to clean the house and wash towels. Just want to make sure that travelers are aware of this requirement by the house owner. However, I guess if your schedule does not allow you conducting the house cleaning, I am sure you can pay a certain amount as the cleaning fee. Just double check with the house owner and make the arrangement.
Other than the above, everything was fine. I use VRBO services all the time and this was the first time that I had to clean the house, so a bit surprised. In the past, mostly the US VRBO house rental, the houses list the cleaning fee and I am used to that. The house we rented in Akureyri before this house did not list the cleaning fee and the house owner did not ask us to clean the house.

We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay! The cottage was in a perfect location, just outside of Reykjavik. After a long day of exploring it was nice to come back to such a peaceful, tranquil place. Soaking in the hot tub was the perfect way to end the day too. Highly recommend staying here ❤️

Cozy cabin on a beautiful lake!
We enjoyed our stay at this very cozy cabin in the mountains outside of Reykjavik very much and thought the cabin was very cool. The cabin is well kept and charming. The beds were the highlight in that they were the most comfortable of our trip! We all slept great and the views were stunning. We loved it. But if you book it in winter there are some things you should know though. The cabin is a 50 to 52 minute drive to the heart of downtown Reykjavik where the tourists want to be, not 30 minutes. So if, like us, many of your activities are in the Reykjavik area this may not be the best place as wonderful as it is. We had friends in Reykjavik and did some night excursions there that meant we drove a dark mountain road in snow for 50+ minutes to get back to the cabin. One night the northern lights followed us which was very cool and why we wanted to be away from city lights in the first place. I wouldn't recommend planning night excursions or morning ones either as it is just a long, but beautiful drive. The hot tub was great but took about 2 hours to fill. And you need to clean it thoroughly so an early flight out is not ideal. but if you are looking for a place to hunker down, not spend much time in the city and hope to see the Northern Lights then this is the place for you!! It's pretty spectacular!! we would for sure stay in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Great experience
This is our second visit to the house and that in itself explains how happy we are with the property
It once again ticked all the boxes, the owner was extremely helpful in arranging with the local farmer to snow plough our drive and with the amount of snow we had this was a regular occurrence
We could not have asked for anything better for our stay

Perfect Winter Vacation
Beautiful house in a great location! We really enjoyed our winter stay and we were treated to an amazing view of the northern lights from the deck during our last night there. Cabin was well equipped and owner, Jakob, was very responsive and helpful…Couldn’t have asked for anything more! We would definitely stay here again.
