the worst stay
staff rudeness and horribly bad breakfasts

The breakfast was horribly bad, and the staff were very rude. It really was the worst stay of my entire life. I don't know how they would earn a good review from others. Overall, this was the worst stay of our entire trip.
the attitude of the staff and the breakfasts

Very clean and wonderful views across the rice fields

Huge room. Very clean.
Wonderful local breakfast with a beautiful view.
Very helpful host with a lot of information on touristic attractions all over Sri Lanka.
Loved the welcoming Mango fresh juice.
The bathroom has no door, just a curtain which means a huge lack of privacy.
A lot of insects outside, which is understandable since we are in the middle of nature, but for sure impacts the experience especially by night.
No shampoo like many other hotels in Sri Lanka unfortunately.
There aren’t much activities to do.

Quiet place, beautiful surroundings. The owner was very helpful, arranged us private safari ride in the Yala.

Nice property in a village setting with rice fields on the backdrop. Good breakfast with string hoppers, eggs, fruits provided per requested. Tissa is a small town, limited food options, but a good gateway to Safari to nearby national parks and about 30 miles drive from Katargama.
No doors to the toilet/bath, just a cutain to sperate the room from the bath/toilet, was kind of wierd, otherwise no issue with the room.

Nice hosts! Rooms re big and comfy. Lunch was delicious. Safari was cool as well. Have seen crocs, a leopard, elephants, bears, buffaloes and so from distance.

Amazing host who also arranged us a safari and cooked us one of the best curries we had in Sri Lanka. Highly recommend!

Awesome staff and a really nice place! Unfortunately we only stayed one night. The safari was also really good and the guide did everything he could to serve us. I really recommend!
It was really loud between the rooms, you could hear everything the people in the room next to us said (or whispered) which was a bit irritating.

Beautiful accommodation with very spacious rooms. The host was lovely and very helpful at all times. He cooked amazing food for us and organised the whole Yala Safari. We will definitely come back and can recommend the Guest House to anyone!
Everything was amazing.

it was beautifully located in between the ricefields and Sanjeewa arranged our taxi from Ella to the guesthouse so we could share it with others. The rooms were great. Clean bed and bathroom and nice airconditioning. It also smelled really nice when we arrived. We could use the bikes for free to see the center and the food they made us was great. Next morning we were picked up by our very experienced safari guide who showed us all of the animals even on a rainy day!! Sanjeewa and his wife made us lunchboxes and everything was taken care of. We arrived back at the guesthouse at 12:00 and lunch was ready for us. They even arranged a free tuktuk for us to go to the busstation. Would definitely recommend! Such nice people.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with the warmest hospitality from Sanjeewa and his family. He picked us up from the railway station and back. Moonlight is located in a peaceful and serene area surrounded by stunning greenery of rise plantations and little green islands of palm trees, which made a truly tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.
The room is clean with comfortable beds and all the amenities you need for the stay. Delicious and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine for breakfast and dinner, one of the best we had in SL.
His family is expirienced in safary trips, be sure you book with them, you will see all the animals and Sanjeewa will provide you with free lunch, snacks and soft drinks.
Overall, we couldn't be happier with our stay, we will come back one day...

We were treated like Kings here! the owner is so freindly and welcoming The breakfast and dinner were just perfect. Lying in the hammocks listening to and watching the birds in the rice fields was so relaxing. The owner organised a full day tour of Yala National Park which was amazing with lovely breakfast and lunch prepared for us when we were there. The driver who works with the owner was brilliant and explained well all the animals and birds. we had the jeep all to ourselves which was worthwhile as it gave us lots of space to move around to get the best views. He was very patient and respectful of the animals. Before we left we had a very nice short walk to look at the nearby lake and the thousands of hanging fruit bats. The owner also organised a taxi for us to Ella for a very good price.
Nothing it was perfect.

Clean, comfortable beds, lovely food - good value for money as a guesthouse
We can’t recommend booking any safaris with the guest house - our assigned driver was rather a race car driver than a safari driver, even after asking to slow down, he continued to speed though Yala National Park to ‘hunt’ animals while we could barely sit tight enough in the jeep with no seatbelt or any protection. This sadly led to a head and nose injury, as the driver oversaw a mud hole in the ground while looking elsewhere at high speed and we hit the seat in front of us with our head. We have already done various safaris around the world, but have not encountered such a dangerous and careless driving style. Even without the accident, it’s not been an enjoyable experience, as we just rushed through the park to tick off as many animals as possible and barely stopped for 2 mins at one place!

Lovely garden, nice room, good position to reach the Yala National Park without staying too close to the park (it's more expensive), abundant breakfast.
Pillows are not very comfortable

Great and big room, very nice garden surrounded by paddy fields in a quiet location. The city is easily reachable on foot or a short tuk tuk ride. Very tasty lunch after the safari and super friendly people - they even made sure we got on the right bus to our next location!
They also organised a nice safari for us during which we saw a lot of animals, though we would have liked some more explanations about the wildlife we've seen

We loved EVERYTHING! Our host and his family were so welcoming and accommodating, the rooms and grounds were spotless and perfectly maintained and the gardens were a peaceful place to relax. We went on a full day safari and were recommended the best guide and the packed lunch the accommodation made for us was the best meal we had in Sri Lanka! Honestly incredible. Cannot fault this place. We will be back!
100% happy with everything

Everything was perfect.
The service was the best we had in Sri Lanka.
The food was delicious, with also the best breakfast we had in the country.
The property is in a quiet location, you can go to restaurants by a short walk and to the lakes with a short ride with the bicicles.
They gave us all the facilities to do a safari, which was a great experience.
I totally recompend this place.
Once again, the service was sensacional.

Staff was exceptional (very helpful to organise a safari, friendly and generous). The homemade mango juice was delicious. We also very enjoyed our bike ride 😀👍🏻

Perfect guest house for Yala National Park. The host Sanjeewa takes care of everything you need and organizes great Safaris. We had been staying in many different accomodations like villas, resorts, guest houses and hotels, but sanjeewas guest house was one of the best! We felt so welcome and great taken care of. We also highly recommend to have lunch/dinner at the guest house, it was super delicious with fresh fish and original Sri Lankan dishes. also the coconut pancakes were the best by far! You can also rent bikes for free to check out the small city of Tissa and the lakes/nature nearby, absolutely amazing! Sanjeewa and his family are also super well experienced with safaris, since they are offering them more than 14 years already. We can highly recommend staying here and relax in the super beautiful and relaxing garden with hammocks between the trees :)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Moonlight, they organised our very reasonable priced taxi to collect us from Hiriketiya and then after our stay drove us to Ella.
This is a home from home stay, family run. Nothing is to much of a bother for them, they cook you a home cooked dinner ($7), very big portion and some of the best food I’ve had in Sri Lanka, they even wash you clothes for free.
We stayed for two nights and did a full day safari, that they organise and provide everything you need for that day. It’s a day I’ll never forget, truly amazing experience seeing all the animals.
I will be back!

Staff here were amazing, went into so much effort to make sure we had a good time - organised our safari to Yala, made us amazing meals and helped us get a great value taxi to our next place! Really good size room as well.

Everything was perfect. Sanjeewa, the owner, went above and beyond for us. He organised the pick up in our previous guesthouse as well as the drop-off in our next hotel. all of that for very reasonable prices. He also arranged everything for our full-day-safari in Yala, which you should definitely consider doing. Our guide Samit was exceptionally polite and engaged and we were well taken care off with a huge package of food, snacks and drinks by Sanjeewa. Even if you plan on doing just one day of safari, you should definitely stay at least two nights. The amazing view on rice fields, outstanding food and quiet and idyllic rooms are just breathtaking!

We were extremely satisfied with our stay, the guesthouse owner Sanjeewa took great care of us and he helped us to book a safari which is also run by the guesthouse and even made a breakfast boxes when we had to leave early for the bus next day. The guesthouse house has beautiful view over the rice fields from garden as well. The safari experience was great and all thanks to our driver Ishan, we couldn’t ask for anyone better! He was experienced and passionate about the National park and very knowledgeable as well, especially his favourite leopards (we spotted 2 on our safari tour) and birds. You could tell he cared about the nature (went to pick up the plastic rubbish he found on a road after other visitors). Can’t recommend enough!
Thank you Sanjeewa and the team

Everything worked as it should. Good value Safari booked with guesthouse. Food ok but nothing exceptional. Would stay there again .
Was told on arrival that there would be no dinner that evening. Had a longish walk to the town to get food only to return to find 3 new arrivals tucking into a nice meal. Maybe he didn't want to cook for one.

Great stop to go to Yala safari park. Sanjeewa is a great host and is very responsive via messages. I would strongly recommend their safari, which is conducted by Sanjeewa's family. They have been safari guides for a very long time and are quite experienced. We managed to see both rare animals - the leopard and the bear, in addition to plenty others. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. Everything was very clean. The post-safari lunch with rice and curry was probably the best we had in Sri Lanka over the 7 days that we stayed there.
Shower had good pressure but luke-warm.

A rather small room sparsely furnished with the bed pushed up against the wall. We've stayed in much nicer rooms for half this price in Udawalawe and Ella. And it wasn’t the room we booked. They have double, a single double bed, no patio area but a window view over the garden. A deluxe double and single bed, no patio area and a win-dow facing a fence 2 metres away. And two family rooms overlooking the garden with seats outside them. We booked a deluxe double, preferred the deluxe but should have just opted for the family room but they were full for our nights. Both mornings breakfast was while on safari so can't be judged against the normal breakfast. It was unusual. Crisps, a nice sandwich once, soggy toastie the second time, bananas and a chocolate milk drink. Choco-late? Water and coke included for later. A strange and not appetising selection. And none of it in a cooler box in an attempt to keep it cool.
Dinner on the first night was a very nice whole fish between us with many accompanying dishes. Good taste and fair value 1600R each. The second night was chicken, not a lot of meat on the bones, less side dishes not good val-ue at 1600r per person
And the main reason for choosing this place, several email promises of personal attention, maybe I'll drive you my-self, if not a person with many years experience will be your driver. Well someone aged 25 in an unmarked jeep so no idea who he worked for arrived. Ok driving and spotting but very lacking in the safari experience we are used to. We have had many safari experiences in Africa, we had no expectation to see a leopard, they are wild animals and don't work to plan. But someone who doesn’t do the basics of helping you with a breakfast hamper in and out of the jeep and chooses a breakfast rest stop area overrun with monkeys trying to steal food needs a lesson in sa-fari service. The second day we said don’t' use the monkey stop, if we are going to eat in the jeep just stop at a nice view overlooking a waterhole, there are many scenic spots. He didn’t stop at all, eat while we move!! And there is a glass screen between you and the driver, no window to open, so no explanations of animals or flora and fauna as we moved. Very poor, just trying to find a leopard, and failing. And for all the much vaunted best experi-enced drivers with great safari contacts, when a leopard was spotted and the calls went out between drivers no one rang our driver. So no leopard although we did see the rarer black bear at very close range for a few minutes. Not one I’d consider again.

The host was incredibly welcoming and treated us with great hospitality. The food was outstanding. Monkeys living in the garden and view is excellent, we enjoyed watching lots of birds from the terrace. Its much more nice IRL compared with pictures we looked at before. We did the safari with the hotel and spotted sloth beer and leopard.

Great accommodation if you want to go on safari in Yala National Park. The owner is very kind and helpful and organises the safaris himself. He has great knowledge as well as he used to be a safari driver himself! We enjoyed delicious dinner and breakfast and amazing safari. Our room was clean and very comfortable. Very good value for money. I can only recommend! If you want to go on a full day safari (recommended!) you have to book two night - with only one night only a half-day safari is possible.

We booked a night at the Moonlight Guest House for the 29th of December. I contacted the owner Sanjeewa in advanced cuz we planned a whale watching trip in Mirissa the early morning and I had the question if it was possible to do an Safari on the same day.
Sanjeewa is very flexible and humble. He thought with us and together we managed to do the Safari as well.
There was an warm welcome. The location is super relax and quiet. The room was very clean and cozy. We got a very tasty lunch with fresh Mango juice. Sanjeewa told us in a briefing about the Jeepsafari in Yala National Park.
Sanjeewa is honest and told us which animals we probably would see. The Safari was amazing the driver spotted many animals. We saw baby elephants, wild pigs, Buffalo's and much more. Sadly no Leopards or bears because it was to much traffic in the park cuz of the national holiday.
After the park did we had an amazing dinner with fresh fish white fried rice and eggs. It was soo good!!
Thank you again Sanjeewa for your amazing hospitality and care.

They welcomed us with mango juices and knowing we have a safari in the afternoon, quickly prepared a lunch for 4 of us. The dinner and breakfast was also like king. The meals were the best we had in Sri Lanka. Sanjeeva and others are very generous and helpful.
