I was there in April. It is a great place to stay right in the middle of Appenzell Old Town. My room was lovely with a wonderful roof window that opened and looked out over rooftops and I could see the Sutter Schloss. The price was reasonable, very clean, and the breakfast spread was excellent. I wish the desk staff, who were rarely there to answer questions, knew more about the town and places to eat. I ended up eating at their other hotel, Hotel Santis. The staff didn't know there was an Alpen horn group that performed/practiced outside their door, or about the yodeling group of women who just appeared in street clothing, sang for about half an hour or so. It seemed like they did this every Saturday for practice, and of course it was lovely to hear the different style of the Appenzell yodeling which is more harmony and soothing melodic sound, both were lovely!

The parking was the difficult part every lot I went into you needed a disk parking. Which I did not have. I needed a overnight parking lot and after 234 attempts I finally found a parking lot that took coins… But a local girl help me put the coins in as it would not except my credit card…

This was such a convenient location from the train station. Loved the little details: Appenzell specialty treat on the pillows, rubber ducky in the showet and bottled water upon checkout. They even let us put our sandwiches in the frig overnight. The staff was very friendly and polite. Breakfast was good and plentiful!

A nice but confusing town to negotiate. It was difficult to find the hotel and then find parking because of pedestrian-only streets. Once we dealt with that, we really enjoyed the town and the hotel.

Only issue was that the Lowen was closed and we stayed at another property upon which my rating is based. Please use English in notifications of in unavailability notices.

A cute character hotel on the main street in Appenzell. It had a cool sloped ceiling and decorative painted furniture. It was clean and the man was very helpful at the front desk My only complaint would be that it was kind of hot because there was no air-conditioning but they did find us a fan. The breakfast was decent.

Great location, in town center, fewer minutes walking distance to train station, also a nice place for parking . Staff are friendly, helpful and all around worker !! Breakfast buffet was great!

We were switched to stay at the sister hotel Romantik Santis. It was a very quaint well maintained traditional property. Location was great right at town center, easy short walk to explore around and access car park. Staff were super friendly, we felt very cared for in this hotel. Good sized room with very comfortable bed.

An upgrade from this 3 star hotel to Saentis Hotel which is a 4 star hotel . Breakfast was good and easy parking

This was our first time in Switzerland and we really enjoyed ourselves! The hotel was very charming and we had an awesome room with great views of the historical buildings across the street. The town is great and pictures don’t do it justice. My husband and I are from Texas and we are avid AC users and this hotel did not have AC but we were able to open the windows at night and feel a nice breeze so it really wasn’t a big deal! A few tips when booking through Expedia we got free cancellation up to 24 hours and we had a hiccup with our travel arrangements and unfortunately that rule was not honored. BUT the lovey staff made us feel like we were at home and were extremely accommodating with our travel arrangements so we were able to end up staying instead of paying for a night we weren’t going to use. Last, when looking at the weather in Appenzell, do not trust any weather site. Even 2 days before we were supposed to arrive it said 100% rain all day on all the days we were there. Didn’t get a single drop except at around 2am. It actually ended up being very sunny and gorgeous!

Wonderful Appenzeller decor. The person at the desk could speak English. Very clean. We had a glass of wine in their beautiful wood and stained glass bar. No restaurant on the premises but great breakfast buffet which was included with our room. We walked the three or so blocks through the center of town to their sister hotel where we had been given a free cocktail free and enjoyed the great food. There were people on the street on a Tuesday afternoon just out of our room window who yodeled. Close to info center, shopping, many restaurants and cafes. If you want a workout center and pool, etc., don’t stay here. This is a great Swiss small hotel.
