Usually, we stay at one of the houses right on Beach 69 (Wailea Bay), but none were available for our timeframe. We rented Blue Makai maybe feeling a little disappointed about not being at the beach. Once we got to Blue Makai we were so NOT disappointed! The oceanfront location and the tranquil lanai made up for being able to walk to the beach. The lanai has a beautiful antique teak daybed wonderful for just lounging and watching the waves. (Or napping!) We saw turtles and dolphins swimming in front of the house. Unlike the beach, it was very quiet and private. The trade winds and the lanai fans kept the mosquitos to a minimum. The house is old, charming, and well decorated. The kitchenware was super well stocked. All the pots/pans were stainless steel and there was a large cast iron enamel dutch oven (Costco's version of Le Cruset). I like a very firm mattress and my daughter likes a squishy mattress. Somehow the mattresses were comfortable for both of us. Some members of our family are severely intolerant of synthetic fragrances. Mary uses unscented laundry detergent in all her properties and low/no scent on all other cleaning products. The mattresses and washer/dryer don't reek of fragrance like most places. We usually struggle with fake scents when traveling but never at 2Papayas properties. Mary and team are always responsive to any issues.

Blue Makai was everything we were looking for -- private, beautiful, low key residential street. If you want to be near night life, music, or able to easily walk to dinner or shop at unique local businesses, etc, this is NOT the place for you. The closest places to really purchase food (the General Store is very bare bones) are malls with chain stores in big resorts that are almost 10 minute drive at minimum. That said, its isolation was part of what made it heaven for us. We loaded up on groceries and cooked IN every night, watching the sunset over the gorgeous ocean and lava rock. Terrific host, helpful check in, every desired amenity and incredible location on the water with tide pools, snorkeling and turtles right out the back door!

I almost hate to leave this review, since I want to return again and again and don't want other people to book it up before me! This is the house I have been looking for in Hawaii. On the water, quiet, a real home. The kids played in the tide pools all day long, we ate every meal outside on the porch, and the management company was easy to work with and responsive. We have stayed in a lot of places in Hawaii (condos, homes, resorts) and this is by far my favorite. Hoping to return next year

We love the Puako area and were so lucky to stay oceanside to watch the whales swim by the front of the property and look out at Maui in the distance. You can easily driver to many resort beaches or walk to 2 in the Puako area.The location is really nice for easily driving to resort beaches in the area and well as walking to 2 local beaches. And driving uphill a little for a fun farmer's market.The property management is first rate.We can't wait to return!

Location is perfect for exploring the west side of the island. Snorkeling and diving right off the back of the house. Back Lanai is full of comfortable furniture - outdoor couch, 4 comfortable chairs, table for 6. All kinds of kitchen equipment and enough dishes and cutlery tor a family of 4. Friendly neighbors, safe, shaded street to walk and bike on. Plenty of fluffy beach towels. And even a few house geckos to greet us. Convenient grocery shopping. 2 Papayas provided an excellent guide book with extremely current and helpful tips. We appreciated the filled fruit bowl on arrival!! We rent a lot of houses - this is one of those few rentals that is actually better than the photos. Absolute perfection.

Great place to stay. There are loads of turtles on the beach every night and a few to swim with during the day. Very secluded, we saw 3 people all week. Thank you for sharing your little piece of paradise with us!

Our time in Hawaii at this home was perfect! Everything about it from the home itself, where is was located, incredible snorkeling beaches 5 minutes away and the friendly neighborhood market just down the street made our vacation amazing. But what was truly the highlight was the herd of 30 or more turtles that came to visit and frolic in the water right in front of the home! I can't say enough about our trip. Mary our contact person was spot on with her knowledge of the area and was available when we needed her. The huge porch of the home is where we spent all of our down time. With August being the hottest month the porch provided the shade and the ocean provided the breeze making it ideal for hanging out. And the beds are really comfortable and cozy. Okay I've said enough. Just book this place you won't regret it!!!

Four of us stayed at the Blue Dragon and had a fabulous time. My daughter and son-in-law spent hours at the tide pools watching and filming the turtles and eels. We all enjoyed the wide open spaces in the house and on the lanai. It was such a comfortable house. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

My husband and I recently returned from two weeks at the Blue Dragon Bungalow, and we loved it! The home is well equipped and generously supplied, and 2papayas is a wonderful rental/management company. I loved starting my morning with coffee overlooking the water, and each day we spent time exploring the tidepools, replete with turtles and other ocean life. The snorkeling is fabulous, with clear water and so many fish! We thoroughly enjoyed the nature surrounding us, from the gekkos on the lanai to the trees, flowers, and the lovely sound of birdsong. We also enjoyed the unique vibe of Puako, with its neighborhood feel and General Store (I recommend their fresh and delicious ono poke bowl). We did get out to Hawi, Waimea, and scuba diving with the mantas, but it was always great to get back to "our" peaceful bungalow. After 20+ trips to the Hawaiian Islands, including about a dozen to the Big Island, this was our most authentic experience yet. We hope to be back someday soon!

A very comfortable home and property. Nicely stocked kitchen, very private, quiet and right on the water - perfect for what we wanted to do - which was to unwind, relax and watch the whales and the turtles. Thanks - we will be back!

We have stayed at the Blue Dragon Beach Bungalow several times over the past 6 years and highly recommend it! The photos on the website say it all. You can relax under the shade trees on the lounge chairs and look out at the beautiful ocean and the turtles sunning themselves. The beach, in front of the house, is a rocky beach which is not good for children. Hapuna Beach is 3 minutes away by car. Hapuna is a very large beautiful sandy beach. The neighborhood is very quiet. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots and pans and utensils. Air conditioning in bedrooms works very well.

Puako is a local community representative of old and new Hawaii. The property is expansive with lovely views of the Pacific. The house is a typical Hawaiian style with great living spaces and a well-stocked kitchen. The master bedroom is small with limited closet space. The house was clean and well managed.

We vacation in Hawaii for a month each year and this lovely beach home is one of our favorites. We were warmly greeted upon our arrival and shown around the property and any questions answered. There is a booklet in the house that tells you about the surrounding area and recommends activities and restaurants. Every convenience you could ask for was provided for our stay. Well equipped kitchen, reading material, movie, grocery store nearby, washer and dryer and extra towels. We loved this place! The tidal pools - amazing! One day we counted 30 turtles lolling on the rocks and shore. Snorkeling was fabulous. We booked the night dive with a local company to see the manta rays - don't miss it! Although we usually like to try new places we will return to this beach house again. If you just want to sit in a lounge chair, listen to the waves and read a book, you could not find a prettier spot. We recommend it to all ages and interests. Puako is a great location for those who prefer to stay away from the general tourist areas and go local. The lava rock beach is a home to turtles - everynight! This home may not look like much from the road but offers plenty of comfort and indoor / outdoor eating and sitting areas. I was impressed by the well outfitted kitchen, the cleanliness of the beach house and it is perfectly comfortable for two couples - plenty of space. The managers are top notch to work with and made themselves available if needed. The beachline offers long walks, awesome snorkeling, three local sand beaches within a 10-minute drive and a local general store is a walk away. Would stay here again. AND really nice quality bedding and towels which is always appreciated and washer / dryer located outside near the clothes line. It's Hawaii -what more do you need! Aloha

This was our 2nd stay in this home. I is the most relaxing, beautiful place we have ever stayed. If we could spare the time, we would make it a regular, yearly vacation.

Being an avid snorkeler I was looking for a convienent place to stay so that I could experience the snorkeling in Puako and other South Kohala locations. What we got was so much more! The house was not only central to great snorkeling spots it was clean, comfortable and charming. The photographs of the property were acurate but didn't do justice to this home's bright and eclectic decor. The AC in the bedrooms was a real plus. The staff at 2 Papaya's provided a lovely welcome after a long day of travel with cold juice and cool cloths for our faces as well as a personal tour of the house and garden. Mary even put me in touch with a local dive master to answer my questions about snorkeling in Puako. We have stayed in many different vacation rentals in the Hawaiian Islands but 2 Papaya's is the best property managers we have ever delt with.

Awesome grounds. Even had our own coconuts. Comfortable couches, great little bed/couch on back deck. Wonderful sunset watching setup...with swing, hammock, & lounge chairs at water's edge. Great service. Was missing a salad spinner and garlic press in the kitchen; but Mary provided one within 6 hours of my request.That's amazing. My entire family (17, 19 & 21 yr olds) enjoyed exercising in the back yard, watching the wildlife (in and out of the water), using the outdoor shower, & going to nearby Hapuna Beach. We loved the little blue house and it's garden and can't wait to stay here again!
