Spacious loft overlooking the city ...

I gave 4 instead of a 5. I would give it a 4.5 if possible. We were in France for ten days with about half the time in Paris and half in the south with Marseille as our home base. We took a train from Paris to Marseille. The train station to the flat is about a half mile. We walked. Passed A LOT of trash, graffiti, and strong urine smell. The owner’s directions were to go to the middle of the tall buildings (there are three of them) and ring for a person. The area was not as bad as the walk from the train station but still not the best location. A man approached us and asked if we were staying in the AirBNB on the 18th floor. We never did find out his connection to the flat. My wife and I have five kids (ages 8 through 16), and we stuck out like a sore thumb with our luggage from the train station. The man let us into the building. The elevator holds three people. We had to take a few trips to the flat on the 18th floor. A neighbor of the owner met us in the flat. She did not any speak English but was extremely nice. She brought me down the elevator to the front door to show me how to open it. The key did not work. She showed me how to call some unknown person who buzzed in whoever called that person. It was really odd. I felt it was 50/50 whether we’d be able to get back into the building when we left. The neighbor’s adult daughter came home while we were standing at the door and offered to allow me to use her keyfob for our stay. Extremely nice. A keyfob from the owner would have been good since I’m still not sure how we’d be able to get into the building with our key not working. The flat was clean but with a strong aroma of spices. We kept the sliding doors open, which did air it out. The view from the pictures is spot on. Beautiful. We were only provided four towels for seven people. There was used soap in the shower with hair on it. Kind of gross. We arrived in the late evening on our first day, after getting into the flat, we bought some food and wine at the grocery store across the street. Had dinner at the flat. The next day, we walked toward the harbor. It’s amazing that within two block toward the harbor, it becomes very nice. Lots of nice restaurants on the right side. Not many cars on the right side. Walking down the 18 flights of stairs is not ideal, and the landings are pretty dirty. Overall, we went from not having a good first impression to having a very nice impression.

Very light, well equipped top floor apartment with amazing views over the old port
Very light, well equipped top floor apartment with amazing views over the old port
I booked this apartment for four friends and myself as we were visiting Marseille to watch a rugby match. The arrangements couldn't have been simpler and communication with Senami was easy; she always responded quickly and helpfully to any questions. The apartment is on the 18th floor (there is a small lift) and has fabulous views right across Marseille - the picture genuinely IS the view from the apartment. The bedrooms are all comfortable and three of the four are large doubles, the fourth being a single. There are sliding doors all around and a little balcony, so you can open up and enjoy the breeze coming through. The kitchen is very well equipped, although we didn't use it much because there are so many restaurants within a few minute's walk in all directions. On the practical side, there were two toilets, which was essential with five blokes staying there. Only one shower and bath but lots of hot water and no real issues. Great access to the old port area of Marseille, the railway station and the metro and trams system - ideal location. Minor niggles - the lift was a little slow and can only fit three people at once. And the downstairs front door key took a lot of jiggling to get it to work (you have to pull it out a bit) - but once you know - it's fine. Slight concern initially about paying such a large deposit, but I was assured in writing that it would be refunded in full if there was no damage and indeed it was within a week of returning home.
