About this apartment rental
Newly added AC in 2024!
We fully remodeled and upgraded what was already a popular vacation rental in Summer 2018. Details below:
Here is a unique retreat, set in the charming and historical Hilo beach neighborhood of Keaukaha, that feels like the old Hawaii. Large and luxurious studio with full bath, AC, and private covered lanai. Property is across the street from the ocean & surrounded by the rainforest. Beautiful room with comfy queen bed, HD Smart TV, full HD cable with Netflix (etc.) and high speed WiFi. Kitchenette includes small refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. Clean, comfy and relaxing.
Originally built as an artist studio, the 'Ohana was (2018) completely remodeled and transformed into a perfect get-away. It's separate from the main house (basically a guest cottage) and very private. There are lots of large windows, all facing the rain forest.
We added more space (higher ceilings and a little more square footage), a new private covered lanai off the back, new flooring, windows, custom kitchenette, recessed lighting, ceiling fan, AC, etc. It maintains that old Hawaii feel but everything is nice and new.
The kitchenette has custom cabinets & a granite counter. You can eat indoors at the bistro table or out on the covered lanai and enjoy the sounds and colors of the forest.
• Walking distance to ocean and Hilo's best beach parks for snorkeling, swimming, tide pools, sea turtles, kayaking and whale watching (in winter)
• Beautiful rainforest/garden setting and views.
• Remodeled July 2018, approximately 350 square feet plus lanai
• Full bath (shower, sink, toilet)
• Ceiling fan
• Tastefully decorated
• Large comfy new queen bed, 100% cotton sheets
• Just 10 minutes to downtown Hilo
• Beach gear available for use: towels, chairs, mats, boogie board
• Sunny part of Hilo
• Two private deck/lanais attached to Ohana
Just a short walk to the ocean. There are beach parks within 5 minutes of this property including Carlsmith Beach Park, Leleiwi Beach Park and the popular Richardson's Beach Park with black sand.
Hilo Town is home to one of the best Farmer's Markets in Hawai'i and some of the best restaurants around. Yummy dining options, shopping, gateway to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, orchid orchards, waterfalls, rainforest, golf, zip lining, hiking, and more. We are happy to share our knowledge about where to go and what to do while on the Big Island.
We also own a popular vacation rental in Volcano, Hawaii, VRBO #756303 and one in Klamath Falls, Oregon, VRBO #2406940.

The host and the property is outstanding. Very cool and comfortable throughout the stay, easy to find and drive into, short easy drive to the main part of town, and the best part is the walkable beach access that regularly sees multiple seaturtles for feeding and a wonderful snorkeling location with clear water and natural wave breakers. Its pretty much a perfect location to stay in Hilo and is very much recommended.

We enjoyed the attention to detail, cleanliness, and good communication. A perfect place to stay for two. Highly recommend!

Very accommodating, comfortable , well located location in a beautifully landscaped property. Hosts are pleasantly helpful but not intrusive.
6.0 / 10.0
We stayed for two nights and unfortunately did not enjoy our experience. The hosts were responsive which was a plus. There were also various complimentary sun care products to choose from. However, in our opinion, the current condition of the property makes it overpriced.
Cleanness:
- Foreign hair in our bed sheet and in the shower.
- Bed headboard has mold. The woven texture of the headboard and the humid local weather are not a good mix.
Noise level:
- Very poor sound proofing in the built structure. When all windows and doors are closed, the noise level is similar to when windows/doors were open. With the widespread of coqui frogs on the island, using ear plugs was less of an option but more of a must to sleep through the night in this property.
- The property is right off of an commonly taken road and you can hear cars passing.
We stayed at another place for the rest of our trip and did not need ear plugs when windows/doors closed.
Other:
- Bed (mattress and spring box) is on a thin-metal mobile frame. Not very sturdy.
- Kitchen breakfast table was quite wobbly.
- Washroom sink is loose with caulking coming off.
- No bug screen for the bathroom window - some insects will come in, especially when light is lit at night.
We can see the hosts put in lots of efforts for the outdoor space. There were a variety of flowers and fruit plants to view. It was very enjoyable to walk in the back.
Hope the actual studio can be maintained better.

The place is cute, clean and comfortable. Very nice for a short stay. The outdoor spaces are very inviting.
Lots of road noise, screaming neighbors, dogs barking at all hours and the frogs go all night you will love them or hate them, owner fortunately provided ear plugs.

Rain Forest hideaway was a perfect spot for my husband and I.
It was clean, uncluttered but had everything we required for our stay. The surrounding garden is beautiful!
As mentioned by the owners, the frogs are noisy but we ended up looking forward to listening to their chorus every evening.
The location is close to town, the airport, grocery and other stores. The beautiful beaches and parks are a very short walk away. Cathy was very quick to respond to our questions. Otherwise, it was a very private location.
We highly recommend Rain Forest hideaway for a “big island” stay.

This is the second time we have stayed at this lovely unit. It’s a great location for easy access to the beaches and activities of Hilo. The unit is very comfortable with all amenities including beach going items. Highly recommended with easy to work with hosts. Thank you!!

I had a great stay in this very private room. Although attached to the house, it was completely private and I had my own patio for enjoying my morning tea in private with the birds and palm trees. The unit was very well laid out and very clean and comfortable. I would recommend to friends who may travel here. Good size for one or two! Great hosts and gorgeous property.

Cannot say enough about it!

We like the cleanliness, the amenities were great and closeness to the beach. I lived in Puerto Rico years ago and so the coqui were a treat for me. We very much enjoyed being there and would come again.

A very inviting place to stay. Location is great and very easy to get into. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay in Hilo. Only negative and only my preference, is that it doesn't have a washer & dryer on site for use especially since it's hard for items to air dry due to the wetness. But truly nice space inside & out.

A beautiful clean relaxed studio perfect for two! Lovely lush plants all around. Thoughtful amenities and generous use of beach equipment. We loved it here and will definitely return!!

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay in Hilo. Cathy and Jeff were gracious hosts who made sure we had what we needed and were quick to communicate. The location to local spots was excellent for our excursions - farmer's market, Carlsmith Beach, Volcanoes National Park. It was also the perfect spot to relax in the morning with coffee or wind down in the evening after a long day out. Coming from a city, we loved falling asleep to the coqui frogs at night and waking up to rain a few mornings; such a nice break from the sound of traffic. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a getaway in Hilo.

We enjoyed the spotlessly clean
well organized simplicity of this little Ohana! Very private lanai off the living area afforded us peaceful ams and pms after returning from our travels of the day. Very much appreciated the excellent coffee beans provided, along with local juices.
Enjoyed chatting briefly with Jeff, sorry to have missed Cathy. Would absolutely return again in the future!

This property is precisely as described: a "studio" apt. adjacent to the owners' main house. It has its own entrance; and we always had the sense that we were in our own space.
There's no air conditioning, but we didn't feel much that we missed that, despite the definite humidity of the area and of the time we were there, early April. The coqui frogs are certainly present, but we didn't mind them at all: some background sound is nice in a residential neighborhood. (There occasionally was a neighborhood dog barking, which the owners could of course do nothing about; and we have a thing about that, which others might not.)
The location is handy to a lot of things we wanted to see and do, so during the week we were there we were able to use it as a base to explore most everything on the north, east, and south sides of the island. We got to Kona but spent very little time there, on the west.
One suggestion: for 2 people, a 10-12 cup coffee-maker is not especially efficient. It's difficult to make 3 cups, for instance, in a larger machine such as this. Adding a 3-cup or similar coffee maker would be perfect.
Overall, however, we recommend this unit highly.

The property was great - really beautiful yard and lanai, comfortable bed, very nice set-up. This was a perfect base for outings to Volcanoes National Park as well as the nice waterfalls and hikes around Hilo. The coqui frogs are undeniably loud, but they really added to the rain forest feel of the spot - and, at least for us, were a great way to fall asleep. Thanks Cathy and Jeff for sharing this great place.

We enjoyed this modern and peaceful little apartment. Beautiful gardens and away from the bustle. Short drive to good restaurants and the owners were very nice. There’s plenty of beach stuff to use if you want it and pretty convenient to Volcanoes National Park for amazing hiking!

This is a very cute unit. Everything was very clean. We were close to town in hilo but tucked in an area that felt very safe. Be prepared to hear frogs. We loved that though! We highly recommend this place!

Cathy and Jeff’s place in Hilo was the perfect choice for my husband and me. The space was immaculate, inviting and comfortable. We were out and about during the day and appreciated coming back each evening to relax and enjoy the sounds of the coqui frogs. When we return to Hilo, which we will, this will be our place of choice!

This was our second time staying at this cottage. We had another wonderful time, want to keep coming back!
10.0 / 10.0
Pros: The place is a beautiful and peaceful as per the pictures.
-Loved the small jungle enclosed patio-felt very private.
-The place was clean and the bed was comfortable.
-On a dead end road, so not much traffic noise
-Close to Richardson's Park-great snorkeling (go right/south, don't go to the other ones to the north)
-Excellent supply of beach/snorkeling equipment
Cons:
-The place is about 10-15 minutes from Hilo, so there is a drive to get to restaurants.
-Mini fridge has a very small freezer-barely cold enough to make ice
-The place does not have A/C so it got pretty warm. Cooled down by 10-10;30 with three fans
-The Coqui frogs are fun but very noisy. They do quiet down after a few hours at night, but then you can hear other noises (rare road noise, rare neighbor music, rare planes flying into the nearby airport).

Perfect Rainforest Retreat
Everything about this charming studio was perfect! We especially appreciated the private, quiet lanai out back- listening to the rain while having a cup of (fresh beans!) coffee. It's cozy and adorable. And so close to Hilo's best beaches!! We loved every minute.

This was a lovely studio apartment attached to the house, but very quiet and private! Super clean and surrounded by beautiful gardens! It had everything we needed to eat a simple breakfast and prepare lunches for hiking, 30 minutes for Volcano National Park and 10 minutes from town (loved the Wednesday Hilo farmer's market!) Nice beaches nearby and chairs/beach towels provided. So easy to book. Thank you!

Lovely Hilo cottage
We spent 4 nights at this Hilo property. Everything was as advertised - easy access location, well furnished accommodation, rain forest feel and excellent hosts. Cathy and Jeff were very helpful in any questions we had about the unit and the Hilo area. Strong 5 stars!

Peaceful, Tropical Paradise
This property is located in a beautiful, green and lush location. The room looks just like the picture-bright and cheerful and open to the beauties of the outdoors. The owners are very nice and helpful. They've created such a beautiful space to relax and hear the peaceful sounds of nature, like the croqui frogs. This is located just a couple of minutes by car from Carlsmith Beach Park in Hilo, where there is swimming, snorkeling and sea-turtle watching. The owners have some beach chairs and other assorted items you need to go to the beach. One night, we took the chairs and sat on the beach and watched the waves roll in. We highly recommend this beautiful property and would love to stay there again.

Light, airy, tropical
This lovely suite is next to the main house in a lovely, private setting. It is bright and light, with large windows all around. The feeling is almost like being in a treehouse because the windows look out over lush, tropical plants. The suite is spacious and immaculate. The main shopping area in Hilo is only about a 10-minute drive. We very much enjoyed our stay.

The studio is spotless and has a lot of natural light. It combines a fresh modern design with a few cool and curious items (the kettle, the rustic coffee table, etc). The patio is pure heaven and really gives you the feeling of having your own private spot in the middle of an incredibly lush rainforest. The Hilo side of the big island on which this studio is located is definitely my favorite and it reminds me of the lush tropical greenery of Kauai but is better value for money and a lot more down to earth.I was slightly taken aback by the sound of the coqui frogs on the first night. They commence their singing ritual around sunset but they do quiet down in around 2-3 hours or so. I prepared my earplugs on the first night just in case as I’m a very light sleeper but ended up not needing them at all. On subsequent nights I got so used to them that I hardly even noticed them anymore. If anything they became a cute reminder of the tropical paradise that Hilo is in.Met the owners a couple times. Nice people but they give you space and are very responsive if you ever need anything.
