We absolutely loved sitting on our balcony throughout our stay. It was definitely the highlight of this room, with stunning views and peaceful breezes (except the crowing roosters).
The location of this property gave us easy access to everything we wanted to do in the Hilo area, which was a big plus.
The price was more than reasonable and the hosts were helpful. The only downside was substandard pillows and a hard bed (which someone else might not mind, but I found uncomfortable).
All in all, I would recommend this location.

My wife and I spent one night at Hilltop as part of our 4 day trip to the BI. We stayed in the largest king bedroom . The house itself is impressive, especially the exterior and grounds and it is well located near downtown Hilo. I recommend you ask the owner to turn on the air conditioner at least 2-3 hours before arriving. We arrived to a sweltering bedroom. The only TV was in the downstairs shared common area which has no AC. And as others have noted, parking is a problem in a small driveway area. Expect to hear several roosters crowing right outside the bathroom window throughout the night. And don’t expect plush, fresh smelling hotel quality bathroom towels. At least that is not we were provided. Hilltop was ok for a one night stay, but I can’t recommend an extended stay here unless the owners make some improvements.

I liked that it was quiet the room was clean and restaurants weren't too far away for dining

The check in process was ok. The living room of the house and the front yard are stunningly beautiful. However once we got to our rooms we were kind of disappointed. It seemed like maximal effort was put into the first floor of the house but a bare minimal effort was put into the room. The bathroom walls were unfinished and the water pressure of the shower very low, the faucet was loose and barely hanging. The bed was too soft and uncomfortable that my spouse and I had a hard time sleeping. I have to give the hosts a point for providing earplugs though because the wild life is very loud in the morning when you're still trying to sleep. If only the interior of the room matched the living room. A pity! Location is great though.

The house is very clean and beautiful, the owner enthusiastically gave us the guide of checkin, if there is an opportunity we will consider living again :-)

The room I was in was large and had great views of Hilo Bay. The sunrise was amazing.

We loved our 7-night stay at Hilltop vacation rental! We had the economy room with a view of the ocean and it was very cool to wake up to the sun rising. The room was clean, there was a shower and bathroom and all of the necessary essentials for our stay—coffee maker, small fridge, etc…The parking was a bit tight, but our rental Jeep fit into the parking spots! It was a quiet and peaceful stay. Would definitely recommend!
4.5
Enjoyed our stay but did not like the lack of TV. Screencasting was the only option. Nearby roosters start crowing early am.

Place was more than we ever thought. Super clean, super cool. No lobby, self checkin. Pool table in great room. Just a really cool exercise experience. My wife was apprehensive as she likes traditional hotel, but even she was over the top

A short but pleasant stay. Beautiful view and everything was as described. Would come again.

We had an relaxing one-night stay at the hilltop retreat! The host was incredibly kind and accommodating, making sure every aspect of our experience was top-notch. The ocean views were breathtaking, and the sounds of the tropical rain throughout the night created a magical ambiance. The king bed was super comfortable, and I loved the creative floor plan of the unit—it added a unique charm to the whole experience. Five stars all the way for this charming and relaxing getaway!

Lovely place, great views of Hilo Bay

The home was once beautiful, a Bauhaus style architecture where a portion of the house was turned into nightly rentals. The view is gorgeous and gardens still show the original style.
Although improvements were made in our bathroom, the suite was basic and could use some updating, as well as the large living room available to guests.
4.5
The property is so cute and well kept, there was a pool table and the owners greeted us and made us feel right at home. Will definitely be back!

Sarge, the caretaker, was personable, helpful, and great!
4.5
Great place to stay in Hilo, cozy and quiet and yet still right off a main road down to Kamehameha avenue. Would highly recommend to anyone, though do note that parking is extremely tight.
4.5
A unique property with a view over the bay. I believe there are only 4 rooms, all on the second floor with good views. Checkin and checkout are self-service. You will receive access codes via text message, and you may not see another living soul. Expect to be quiet after 9pm. Nice place, would stay again.
4.5
The property is very pleasant, including not only the home, but the surroundings. The large backyard is very peaceful, and the three chickens are a nice addition. The views from the property (and from our room #1) are spectacular.
Parking requires a little maneuvering, but it wasn't a problem. Also, stone stairway to the house, and stairs inside the house to the rooms upstairs, could be difficult for anyone with limited mobility.
I highly recommend this facility if you want a quiet room and an "old Hawaii" experience.

We stayed 2 nights and had good experience. My partner said it is her dream home. Parking has enough space for jeep.

Owner is super nice, could improve the hygiene a bit more (i.e. the towels smell a bit funky).

Great host and excellent service!🌺 Mahalo

Such a beautiful and spacious property
Friendly staff and nothing was a problem
We relaxed whilst either looking at Mauna Kea or Hilo and the ocean
Very convenient to Hilo
Ate at restaurant recommend. It was great

Easy in, easy out. Clean little place.

My second time there and won’t be my last.
4.5
Great views of the ocean and surrounding greenery. The property is well maintained and the communal area with pool table and games Is a great touch.
Jade and the team went to every effort to make sure our stay was amazing.
A 5 minute drive Into Hilo town but beware if you choose to walk it, the 20 minute walk back is all uphill.
4.5
We enjoyed our stay very much. The property was located close to the city of Hilo but high on a hilltop which made it feel secluded and private. The grounds were very nice and there were many places to sit outside and enjoy the weather and/or other's company if you choose. The only thing that I saw that needed attention was the koi pond, which I am sure did not have koi in it because the water was very murky. Parking was easy for us, but if the units were fully booked, I could see how it could become a problem due to a small parking area, and the area for overflow (down the hill next to the stone wall) was not adequate for mid-size to large vehicles.
Would I stay here again: Yes
Would I recommend this place: Yes

We had an amazing stay at the Hilltop rental! The host was amazing and all communications were timely and extremely clear. The unit was quiet, very clean, and well-equipped... and the host provided whatever else we needed. The view overlooking Hilo and Hilo Bay was breathtaking and it's just a short walk to town. We enjoyed the Hilo Farmer's Market which sells amazing local fruit, produce, and foods 7 days a week... and on Wednesdays & Saturdays is extended to include local artists and other vendors. I'm recommending the Hilltop Vacation Rental to all my relatives and friends... also to my friends in Hilo so they can recommend it to their visitors. Mahalo for a memorable and relaxing stay!

Amazing location with fantastic hosts, but not the most comfortable lodging. The hosts did a fantastic job of making us feel at home and were incredibly responsive at addressing an issue we had with the AC unit. We also the location: the view is fantastic and the house has a beautiful indoor/outdoor common area - complete with a few adorable and friendly outdoor cats.
Unfortunately, my wife and I never really managed to get comfortable in the room because of the heat, humidity, noise of the AC unit, and awkward layout. The hosts replaced the AC unit partway through our stay, which helped a bit, but we still never got a full night of sleep.
We enjoyed our time in Hilo and the friendless of the hosts (and their cats!), but we wish the room was a bit more comfortable.

This place has only one positive, the view sunrise over Hilo Bay. But it has several negatives for a tourist that are not disclosed while booking for obvious reasons. The parking situation is dangerous and requires you to reverse your car at side of cliff. They have some weird neighbors who don’t allow using driveway and have dogs barking in the night. You also have to haul your bags up large stairs. There were several insects and lizards in the room.

Beautiful house, loved the pooltable.

Amazing place to stay. Staff was so friendly and welcoming. They also had the cutest cat that stayed outside. Property was beautiful. Room was spacious and had an awesome hot tub with a great view. Will stay here again. Mahalo

The property is in a great location, with easy walking distance to downtown Hilo. It is very clean but old. The water pressure in the bathroom was very low. The bed was not comfortable as the mattress was very soft. There are no kitchen facilities (non were advertised) but the provided mini fridge and microwave was very convenient.
Note: Check in with Hilltop was straight forward and easy. They provided us with the access code at check in time as is their practice. Unfortunately Expedia had incorrectly informed us we'd be provided with an access code 24 hours prior to check in (not Hilltop's practice). This caused us needless concern when the code wasn't provided. Expedia should ensure they provide accurate information.
4.5
The facilities were very old, worn and in dire need of refurbishment, paint and updating. The mattress was very uncomfortable, the electrical outlets were very old and limited in number, the bathroom requires a complete renovation and, although the room is very spacious, the seating in it is limited. We were very surprised that there was no smoke detector in the room, especially in light of the old electrical outlets and overcrowding on the existing ones. The public sitting area is nicely done and the grounds are lovely. The location is fabulous. The view is amazing, the private balcony off our room was very nice and the neighbourhood is quiet and pleasant. With significant updating, this could be an amazing destination. As is, it is disappointing, outdated and not very comfortable.

Very cool home in a quiet neighborhood. The house has a 1920s Art Deco but

I loved the view of Hilo bay from sitting in bed!

These comments need to be taken in context of value. I had a 2-night business stay and just needed a place to sleep and shower. It was very, very affordable. Be sure to ask for Room 1, I think it had the best view and it also had a private balcony. It was a 3-room suite. The grounds were wonderful, lush and well-cared for. The house is obviously an old Hawaiian home, and it has been a while since there were any significant updates (like many decades). The room could have benefited from some paint, the fixtures in the bathroom were a bit dilapidated. The bed was old, a bit bouncy though I slept well. More outlets near the bed would have been helpful (I had to plug my sleeping device in to a 1940s-era plug in the closet).
The views overlooking Hilo were wonderful—the harbor, airport and beyond. All contact with the owners was virtual. I didn't opt for daily room service, and so didn't see staff the whole time I was there.
Would I stay again? Probably not, but it wasn't an unpleasant experience.
