About this house rental

Settled far out in the Tallgrass Prairie of the rolling Flint Hills, with wide and endless views in all directions from a private hilltop, the True Prairie Home stands up to its name. In all seasons the house is surrounded by the magnificent and unique sea of grass. More than half of the year, the grasslands present the black dots of roaming cattle, everywhere. In late March / early April, the winter grasses are burned, with the prairie fires and their black earth aftermath a sight to see—the more so when knowing the young grasses will sprout up immediately after and color the rejuvenated prairie in fabulous greens. From the house, the prairie opens up a large pasture to hikers, painters, photographers, and dreamers. On all four sides the house has inviting porches for lazy gazing, reading and, again, for dreaming away…
All rooms in the True Prairie Home, which was custom built by local craftsmen from native limestone blocks, have huge windows which frame the natural art of the prairie. Handmade walnut doors, cabinets, floors, and staircase, complement the extensive interior stonework. The ample wall space and soaring ceilings provide a backdrop for the truly great, original art collected by the owners. The style presents a tasteful blend of the old days with contemporary design. On the first floor the living area is centered around a beautiful twenty foot stone wall and fireplace; the kitchen is fully equipped with tasteful materials and modern appliances; and the rustic dining table seats eight. The master bedroom features an interior stone wall, a large adjoining bath, and French doors opening to the expansive porch. On the second floor, you will find another large bedroom, bath, and a spacious den; complete with Western art and a queen size leather sleeper sofa.

As good as it looks! All the amenities you need, excellent AC, bug beautiful grill. Quiet and peaceful place, our 3 year old loved chasing the grasshoppers and flying a kite in the yard. Easy short day trips to Tall Grass Preserve and nearby historical town. Recommended for a great family getaway.

The view in all 4 directions is amazing. Despite some clouds and the wildfires in Canada and way out west, we were able to enjoy the milky way and the meteor showers, right from the back porch. The house is lovely. Kitchen, living room, bedrooms, office, all fabulous. I think that one car passed the house on our first day. We did enjoy watching the cows in the distance. If you have ever been in Kansas during a tornado warning... you should know that this house has a deep, totally safe, dry basement! That is a plus not mentioned in the listing. A storm shelter needs to be comfortable enough to make you want to use it even if you're not sure a tornado is coming right at you. It would even be easy to convince the kids to play games in this basement while you're waiting out a storm. The gravel roads were no problem for my Toyota Camry, by the way. Driving instructions were perfect, and house was also easy to find with GPS, but we arrived before dark.

Really tasteful and comfortable. A healing place—the wind and birds and views. We did not really want to leave the property at all during our stay, but did go to the Tallgrass Prairie for great hiking and to Cottonwood Falls for nice, fresh lunch at the Grand Hotel—all a convenient easy drive.

Directions are good and check in was easy. House is beautiful, modern, and is well outfitted for cooking. Plenty of space for the four people on our trip to stake out a spot and watch the rain, and cows, move across the hills. Looking forward to going back for some stargazing.

This was our second time staying at this lovely house. The building itself is a work of art and Debbie and Jerry have filled it with more art, lovely furnishings and interesting objects. The porches are the best ever for sunrises and sunsets, and in our case, a full moon. The kitchen is well-equipped.

Stayed at this property in June 2023. The views are beautiful with fantastic sunsets seen from the back porch. Place is decorated beautifully, and I had everything I needed for meal prep in the kitchen. Really enjoyed hearing the cows located in adjoining pasture, coyotes howling at dusk, and the wild turkeys. Cottonwood Falls is approximately 20 minutes away. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Prairie Home! It was just what we needed for a peaceful and serene getaway. Beautiful home, tastefully decorated…..and very QUIET! Except for the occasional cows mooing, which we loved : ) We enjoyed sipping coffee on the wrap around deck, watching movies at night and hiking the Tallgrass Prairie Reserve. Social group dinner weekend. Had an absolutely amazing stay, this being our second time, two couples with us first time. All the amenities you could ever need. Beautiful views of the Prairie, quiet and relaxing. We were even treated with a prairie thunderstorm, followed by an amazing sunset! very friendly neighborhood dog came and greeted us on our last day. Just wanted some attention, so we spoiled him! We will definitely return.
