This custom adobe vacation rental home is the perfect "getaway" when visiting the Big Bend. Located on 40 acres and at the end of a long drive, the Big Bend Getaway provides seclusion and privacy. Furnished in a western style with modern flair, the house is built for comfort and relaxation indoors and out. Thick adobe walls and efficient heat and air keep it cozy in any type of weather. The large front porch and screened dining porch provide shade from the heat and protection from flying insects. The carport will protect your car from desert sun and storms. The main bedroom has a queen bed and its own AC and heater for a perfect night's sleep. The second bedroom also has a queen bed and is located beside the living room. The kitchen is equipped with everything you would typically need to prepare and serve most meals. Enjoy your meals in the rock floored dining room or on the dining porch. Relax in the comfortable living room, the bedrooms, one of the porches, around the fire circle, or on the double hammock.
We can comfortably lodge four adults on the two queen beds. Dogs are also welcome. If you have a larger group, consider renting multiple homes. Dos Corazones, Crystal Valley, Terlingua Ranch Retreat, Ringtail Cabin, Texas Home, and Desert Aura are all just a short drive away.
We recommend bringing a good book, or select one from our bookshelves, many about Terlingua and the Big Bend region. Just kick back and enjoy the solitude inside or out. Of course, there are lots of other activities to keep your stay busy and exciting. Watch the abundant birds, wildlife, and desert plant life on our twenty acres or as you walk, bike, or drive along the hundreds of miles of dirt and rock roads of the 200,000 acre Terlingua Ranch. Sign in at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge and hike along the remote and breathtaking trails through the Christmas Mountains. Visit Big Bend National Park (just 30 minutes to the west gate) or Big Bend Ranch State Park (just 45 minutes to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center). Enjoy meals, drinks, live music and more at the various restaurants and bars in the area. Sit out at night to watch the stars, tell tall tales, or enjoy a small fire. Drive along some of the most scenic roads in Texas. Raft or canoe down the Rio Grande. Enjoy a guided horseback ride or jeep tour through the rugged west Texas landscape.
With so many options, you can return home as relaxed or exhausted as you choose. Either way, you'll “getaway” from everyday life and bring back countless memories.
The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)
Big Bend Vacation Rentals started out in 2007 and initially managed three of the first four vacation rentals in the Terlingua and Terlingua Ranch area. We now manage dozens out of a couple of hundred options. We represent dozens of property owners and have hosted tens of thousands of guests. You can trust us as managers, and you can rely on the properties that we manage. We have become very selective about the properties and the property owners that we add to our portfolio.
Interaction with Guests:
We manage several properties and live several miles away. We are available by phone, text, email, or messaging. We are typically only on site for cleaning or maintenance issues.

Close enough to do Big Bend trips but it feels like you’re miles away from it all when you’re at the house. Hammock is a great feature for viewing the stars at night. A/C and everything advertised worked perfectly.

We could not have been happier with our stay at your property. It was very clean and had absolutely everything we needed. Gave us a chance to unplug and unwind. Views were amazing and stargazing on the hammock was the highlight of our trip. We will definitely be coming back to stay!

Had a great few days in the Big Bend region. We sought peace and quiet and was not disappointed!! The property was clean, and perfect for our trip. We could have not asked for a better experience.

The property was about as close to Big Bend NP as we could get. The view from the front porch was spectacular (especially at sunrise) and the night sky was incredible. We even saw a small herd of javelinas on the property as we were leaving. The property itself satisfied our needs. The owners gave us great directions to this remote location and tips on what to wear and what supplies to bring. Overall a great experience!

Perfect experience for our first visit to BBNP. We enjoyed the peace and beautiful sunrises. It was great to be able to bring our dogs. The porches were a great bonus.

Loved this property. Perfect for star watching and quiet evenings. We will rent again.

We enjoyed our stay, especially the peace and quiet of the place. House was well appointed with supplies. The drive to Terlingua and the Parks was, as described, in the listing, which made for long day trips. Sitting outside after dark and watching the skys come alive was our favorite pastime. If you want to be away from neighbors, noise and light pollution this is the place for you.

This VRBO had all we needed for a quiet week away. The hosts provided very helpful information (such as where to purchase fuel and stock up on groceries) so we could plan our arrival in advance. It is quite a drive to get into Big Bend NP from here, but plan on a lot of driving pretty much anywhere you stay in the area.
We saw a coyote one morning when we took a walk down the road. Also saw a roadrunner up very close when it hopped up onto the windowsill next to the sofa where I was sitting and reading (inside). Thanks for the lovely accomodations.

Private location with beautiful views. Thunderstorms each evening were breath-taking. Hosts provided all the water we needed. Easy drive to the national park and surrounding area/activities. Terrific directions. Rugged driveway, not for a low-slung car.

We really enjoyed the front porch, very private, beautiful views and quiet. Watching lots of birds, and even javalina's came walking by. It was further away from Terlingua as we thought, based on the vrbo app, but worth it. Directions were clear, but written for driving from the north. However we drove from the south, since we stayed in Chisos first. We loved our stay a lot!

We loved escaping San Antonio to come out to Terlingua and this home made it all that much better. It was so peaceful and had everything we needed. Every night we sat on the porch and enjoyed our wine. So relaxing and we loved how quiet the area is. Perfect place for stargazing!

Set into a mountainside with a beautiful vista to the east and a hammock for ease of stargazing. Loved the screened in porch and the front porch lined with Adirondack chairs for a relaxing evening after some treks through Big Bend. Really comfortable accommodations. The supply of drinking water and a well stocked kitchen was much appreciated too! Was a bit of distance from the Park but totally enjoyed our stay there. Watch out for the burros on the ranch road!

We were visiting from Michigan and stayed at Terlingua for 5 days and hiked at BBNP everyday. It was lovely coming back to the very comfortable house that had everything one would need! The night sky was a treat and the enclosed patio was great for night and early morning coffee!
We had small issue with water which Darly took care of right away. He was on top with his communication. Thank you!
PS: the mattress and pillows were the most comfortable that I have had at a rental!
Thanks for a memorable visit to BBNP.

Awesome place to stay if you’re looking for some quiet. About a 45 minute drive to both state and national parks. Beautiful views, clean, quiet. This was our second time staying at this property this year, and both times were absolutely wonderful.

Our recent trip to visit out Son in Austin allowed us to visit this beautiful location.
Big Bend had always been on my list of National Parks to visit but getting there was always the issue especially when you live in Maine.
From my first interaction with Janet she was prompt with her responses to my questions and made me feel valued as a potential guest.
I am so happy we decided to stay at this location for it allowed us to fully experience all this region has to offer.
The home was exactly as described, the communication with Janet exceptional at check in, and we definitely will return.
In fact, it was far better than I would have expected for seeing is believing.
Wonderful to disconnect, understand the local culture, and appreciate once of the last frontiers in this country that I hope never changes.

Beautiful Views
We had a wonderful time. The property is great and secluded. We were able to relax on the porch and screened in patio where we ate most our meals. The space was great for my husband and I and would be great for a small family. We spent a lot of time in Big Bend and the drive to and from is very scenic. We would definitely come back again and stay at this location.

Terrific Big Bend Getaway
We had a wonderful long weekend staying in this house and hiking Big Bend. The house was perfect - comfortable, private, beautiful views, dark at night. We grilled and cooked each night, and the house was well stocked with everything you need. It is a little over an hour drive to the Chisos Basin hiking spots, so take that into consideration, but unless you are camping you are still going to be 30 minutes away and won't have the privacy and beautiful views that this house offers.

Stunning & Peaceful!
As a last minute trip to the Big Bend, this house was more than what we could have asked for. The host gave detailed and helpful directions on how to get to the secluded heaven, and the surrounding mountains and clear skies make it worth the drive. It was stocked with everything we needed for a long weekend, and our favorite spot to sit was the sunroom. Thanks again for having us!

Perfect House in Terlingua Ranch
We spent 4 nights at this location and enjoyed every moment. It was perfect for 2 couples looking for a quiet getaway. The house had a rustic feel with nice upgrades. We enjoyed a feeling of seclusion with town 35 mins away. The front porch and screened porch were wonderful for enjoying morning coffee and dinner. We utilized the fire pit one afternoon and had a blast. Despite the remote location, the WiFi was top-notch (though there was no reason to be on devices). If you are looking for a private, comfortable location, this is the spot. The owner communicated in a timely manner and was super-friendly. You can't go wrong staying here.

Wonderful experience
This was a lovely place. It is a bit of a drive from Terlingua but once there, it offered us a place of great respite. We especially loved the porch on the front of the house and the screen porch where we spent much of our time. The setting is beautiful. The owners were very responsive and we loved our experience here.

Fabulous Sunrises and Outdoor Living!
We had a very nice stay at The Getaway! The home is on the small side, but feels more spacious due to the high ceiling and the open layout of the kitchen, dining and living areas. We spent most of our time on the covered porch or on the screened dining porch. The breezes are amazing! NOTHING beats the night sky here! Turn off all lights to the house and the stars pop out. There’s even a telescope in the home for stargazing! Bring books or other things to keep you occupied in your downtime as there is no TV. One thing to keep in mind is power outages are possible and we experienced a 7-8 hour outage our first day. The home has non potable water from a rain catchment system and a pump moves the water to all faucets and the toilet. No electricity equals no lights OR water. Flashlights, food and drinking water are HIGHLY recommended. There is a propane grill that was nice to have during the outage. There is a drinking water dispenser in the kitchen, but again, it’s electric, so plan ahead. This home is 10 miles down Terlingua Ranch Rd, which was a negative for us, but may be a plus for others. Once on the highway, the trip to Terlingua and the Chisos Basin are a relatively easy trip. There was nothing to spray down the counters after cooking. We spilled water on the kitchen floor and when we wiped it up the paper towel was pretty dirty, so it could’ve been cleaner. There were spiderwebs, but I guess that’s to be expected in the desert. I knocked off a cleanliness star because of these things. All in all this is a great rental if you’re looking for seclusion, peace and quiet.

The Perfect Desert Getaway
Stepping out of our comfort zone we booked this property. It was perfect! Everything was clean and exactly as listed. We didn’t have to bring anything which was even better! The grill was clean and full of propane. Plenty linens and a fully functioning and stocked kitchen. We hiked up the mountain behind our property. The night sky was gorgeous. Hearing the coyotes at night rounded out the desert experience. We even saw a javelina. Easy 45 min drive to Big Bend National Park and 35 min to Terlingua for our river trip. Made for an incredible family vacation.

This is a great location. From sitting on the front porch listening to the wind blow and the birds, watching rabbits and everything else just live life. It was amazing to get away from the world. Your close enough to so many things to see and do. We were only there 4 days but spent everyday full and almost never did our plan and had an amazing time. We love everything about the stay, the location, the people who were all friendly. If you want to get away from everyone and spent time watching the world this is a great place.

Quiet and unique
We had a great stay which made me to fall in love with West Texas. This house and surrounding area is very well worth your time to cool down and recharge.
House is small, but very spacious at the same time. Screen porch overlooks one of the most beautiful mountains around. Property is well maintained and has great cooling. Sunrise is one the view you will never forget. Certainly recommend and perhaps will be coming back sometime.
