About this cabin rental
The Hynes Family Cabin is a once-in-a lifetime experience. Built by our grandparents nearly a century ago, the cabin will transport you and your family back to the beautiful, authentic charms of the Old West, while you enjoy plenty of modern amenities.
The cabin sleeps seven, with three twin beds and two queen beds. Its 40’ wide sleeping porch is unique, and has a truly breathtaking view. Our grandparents chose this location for the most beautiful vista they’d ever seen. At sunset, you’ll see Mt. Elkhorn and Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) glow pink and gold. An occasional rainbow will dazzle you. Each morning you can watch a herd of horses running from their nearby pasture to the stable.
Children love the Hynes Cabin. Great climbing rocks are all around. Our original ball and claw bathtub is on the porch, filled with pillows and inviting kids to read and snooze. “A Boy’s Life in the Hills,” written by our dad, shares tales of his many adventures. Our guests love to sit on the porch or in our cozy living room and read tales about the West. It’s a place that encourages rest and renewal, with lots of fun things to do close by and a quiet place to come home to at day’s end.
There’s a chest full of fun family games and a DVD player. KOA amenities – trail rides, a water slide, miniature golf, two swimming pools, movie nights and pancake breakfasts – are available. Only the trail rides and pancake breakfasts have a fee. Many nearby trails invite hikers of all skill levels. Iconic Mt. Rushmore and charming Hill City, “the art capital of the Hills,” are both just six miles away. Pristine Sheridan Lake, where the family can swim, fish and hike, is only a 15-minute drive away.
The Hynes cabin is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, too. Its beauty, quiet and privacy will help you relax and refresh. There are two queen beds, one on the porch and one in the living room.
There are so many personal touches that you’ll feel right at home. Our handsome queen headboards were made by a local carpenter, and the four pine chests were built for the cabin in 1925. Frances made all the curtains by hand, just as our grandmother did nearly a century ago. On the porch there’s a display of some of the daily objects she used: her apron, her Vaseline glassware, her Mixmaster and other objects. The coffee table was made from the cabin’s original closet. Newly installed solid wood doors compliment the cabin’s authentic feel. A book of photos tells the history of the Hynes Cabin.
The 40’ wide sleeping porch is just as it was 100 years ago, with our family’s saddles hanging on the rafters. Antique light fixtures from the 1930s adorn the two bathrooms. The newly refurbished kitchen is fully equipped. And for nearly 100 years, guests have been sharing their memories and whimsy on paper plates that are all part of this truly unique experience. We look forward to hosting you in our Hynes Family Cabin.

The whole process was so easy, it was located perfectly for the place we wanted to see.

Great place to listen to the rain, watch the sunset and listen to the horses. I will be coming back again.
Cell service was bad and no WiFi at cabin. Yet for me that was perfect. If you are doing any work during your stay you will need to drive to the front

The kids loved the sleeping porch. The KOA can be a bit noisy in the evenings, but wasn’t unbearable. We took the kids down to the FunZone one morning and ate at the All You Can Eat Pancake breakfast. It was a great place for our family!

It was amazing! Beautiful. Clean. Well stocked. We will definitely be back

The Cabin was extremely clean! We loved hanging out in the screened in porch. We played cards and ate our meals out there. My boys enjoyed sleeping with the fresh air! The best surprise was there were dozens of horses out to pasture behind the cabin. Absolutely beautiful!

We love the Hynes cabin! It was our 2nd time staying there and it didn’t disappoint. We love how quaint it is, the sleeping porch, hearing the horses stampede down the hill every morning! It’s so special.

Booked the cabin to fulfill my mother’s bucket list. Mount Rushmore was to be our adventure. However the cabin sealed our adventures as well. The cabin felt like home so much to see at and around the cabin. The joy of a nightly fire the ability to cook outside and the rocks for the kids to climb on brought everything full circle. Perfect place for families to stay. The greatest besides the camp fire was watching the horses and deer play tag behind the cabin as the sun was setting.

We loved our time at the cabin- it was nice to have all the amenities of KOA but also be tucked away in the quiet of the cabin. We loved sleeping on the porch, watching the horses run by each evening, and the cabin was very well stocked.

Beautiful place.Be prepared for no air conditioner nice at night in July but plan on exploring during day not bearable at 90 degrees to stay at cabin during day.Knew no air conditioner going in to stay just really hot weather the 3 nights we stayed.

Located overlooking a horse pasture and the iconic Black Elk peak this quaint family owned cabin was just what we were looking for. Well appointed and spacious for our family of 6. The sleeping porch is amazing. You have to drive thru the KOA to get here but its proximity gives access to a LOT of additional amenities. Think pools, bar, multiple restaurants, UTV rentals, horseback trail rides, ice cream, outdoor movies, playgrounds, mini-golf…it is also centrally located to all the things. Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Custer State Park, are all just a short drive away.
In short, book it, you won’t be disappointed!

The perfect SD cabin. Nothing will beat the sound and sight of the horses every morning and evening. It’s pretty central to all the sights and hiking. The use of the KOA amenities is a major bonus. The house manager, Kim, is very quick to answer your questions. Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing experience at the cabin. In early June the sleeping porch was perfect for kids, nice and cool in the evening. There were plenty of warm blankets available to use, and the queen bed on the porch had a privacy curtain which was a nice touch for adults staying out there. There was so much history about the cabin and the valley available to read, which was very fun. Kitchen was well stocked, grill was easy to use, and everything went smoothly. We had one question about the shower (you pull down on the faucet to start it if anyone else has trouble), and when I sent a message the manager got back to me immediately. It was a lovely place to stay, and we would definitely visit again!

Location is great, its in the back of the KOA so you don't have to hear all the noise but benefit from the accommodations if you want it.
Host was very responsive.

We enjoyed our stay at this cabin! The owner was easy to communicate with. The kitchen had everything we needed and we enjoyed eating dinners on the porch overlooking a beautiful view (the large septic ponds didn’t bother us too much, no smells). The porch area does get a little windy at times and cold at night but our girls loved the electric blankets and said the porch was cozy and fun!

The cabin was amazing. We had perfect weather for utilizing the sleeping porch with plenty of blankets available for warmth. We love sleeping in a cold room and this was great.
Nice touches of family memorabilia the made you feel at home
We would definitely stay again.

We took my elderly in-laws and our kids but scheduled it without realizing in advance it was Sturgis week. I checked in at the KOA office to let them know we were going to be at the cabin, but the desk clerk said we didn’t need to check in with them but we’d have to pay to use the pool or rec areas. The owner sent great instructions on how to access the cabin, but I still had to ask for help before I found the obvious sign out front. Oops! The cabin was huge, spacious, clean, and comfortable. Yes, the KOA retention ponds are in view, but have no odor to the cabin and geese, deer, and horses are all frequent visitors around the ponds. Mountain views are a tip of your head upwards! The attached KOA is busy and can be loud, but we did take advantage of their dining facilities and ice cream shop when we couldn’t get in anywhere else due to bike traffic. The beds were comfortable and the extra blankets came in handy for chillier mornings. The kitchen and coffee pot were a blessing! We used the dvd player to unwind with the kids. The kids loved climbing the large rocks and seeing the chipmunks run up the exterior of the fireplace. The cabin was tucked far enough away from the campground that the only real noise was nature and the horses being rounded up, which we enjoyed seeing. We did take the scenic Palmer Gulch Road out the back of the campground to avoid all the foot traffic, and loved the pretty views and winding road into Hill City. We wish we could have stayed longer!

We had fun staying at Hynes cabin. You can see the Harney Peak/ Black Elk peak in the deck. You can even hear the 1880 train.
We did horseback riding and rode the banana bike—tons of things to do around black hills.
I recommend this place specially if you have a small kids.

Very cool cabin in an incredible location. We loved the KOA amenities, the convenient location, and the cabin had everything we needed. We've told all of our friends and family about the place.

The cabin was very clean and stocked with all the items needed and even some things that you wouldn’t think of. We enjoyed the remote location but also being close to things to see and do in the Black Hills.

The cabin is rustic and charming - exactly the experience we were looking to give our kids for their first road trip out west. We found that the cabin was well stocked with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We cooked all of our breakfasts and dinners there and found the kitchen well appointed - I loved the cast iron pans! My wife and kids are really into horses and we loved watching the horses run in/out each evening and morning. The location is great - close proximity to all the sites we wanted to see, and great to be able to use all the campground amenities. Even though the campground seemed busy, when at the cabin it felt pretty private. My wife and I were super happy with our decision to stay here and would definitely stay again if we make a return trip!

We wanted a place that was close to trailheads for hiking and the cabin was a perfect location. Beautiful spot to sit out and watch the sunrise and sunset. Kids loved watching the horses and being able to see Black Elk in the distance. Great memories!

The cabin was by all the major location. But the amenities like the grill was old and dirty. Big problem with flies on the porch. Was suppose to be able to watch DVD on the TV but didn't work. After 3 days back and forth with Kimberly just gave up. KOA work trucks driving back and forth 30 to 50 times a day on dirt road behind cabin going over metal plateform which made a loud noise everytime. No weclome basket for the amount of money we spent to stay for a week standards were just below my expectations. Most likely without some kind of discount won't be going back. Oh and the fireplace just electric not a real wood burning fireplace.

There are so many great aspects to this cabin: the location in central Black Hills, the historic nature of the cabin, the sleeping porch, seeing the horses run each morning. Ample bathing towels and the kitchen was well equipped for cooking meals. While we have two kids, we didn't use the KOA facilities, but I imagine some may like that. The cabin is on KOA property, but the cabin was separate enough for us. We certainly could see and hear the campers, but we felt we had plenty of space and privacy. It was nice to have a place for ice cream close, place to get firewood and ice.

We absolutely loved the cabin and its location. Also, rich history. The horses running past the cabin twice daily was a treat. The cabin was very well stocked with pretty much everything we needed. If I had to make any improvements it would be that there was no cord to hook the router for the tv and the grilll also did not work. So wouldn't count on those two items as amenities. Overall great place and I would go back again.

The cabin itself was beautiful! For sure something we will always remember. There was plenty of space for our family of 6. Sleeping in the screened in porch was great! Of course watching and hearing the horses being rounded up each morning was a favorite for everyone! I do have a few negatives though. First, no cell service or WiFi. If you go up to the KOA main building you get some Wi-Fi, but it's slow. This made it a little difficult for planning our next day's adventures. 2nd negative is the heat. We were there mid August and it got hot in the cabin! Pretty much couldn't spend time in the cabin during the day.. which really wasn't bad. We would typically come back in the evening, tired and hot, so we would hit the pool. It really was great that we could use all of the amenities at the KOA! Generally took until 9pm or so until the cabin cooled down. Definitely too hot to cook meals. We had planned on grilling lots, but the grill was so rusted and old it didn't work (3rd negative). The owner was very responsive when we let them know about the grill, and brought out a (very) small charcoal grill to use instead.
All in all, pretty awesome place!

Spent 3 days in this rustic (in the best way possible: sleeping porch, quilts, wicker, etc.) cabin on the tail-end of our CO/WY/SD trip with our daughter and 4 grandkids. Perfect location - the area is packed with amazing places to explore. When we’d return late afternoon each day from “tourist-ing”, the kids would enjoy the KOA activities until dark. Then all would sleep contentedly in the cool, fresh air. A great, memorable trip!

The cabin was very clean and the kids loved climbing on the rocks. The view is beautiful and the porch was great for playing games and relaxing after a long day of hiking and adventuring. The kitchen had everything we needed and plenty of towels for the pool and bathing. My only complaint is that there is a service road right behind the cabin that leads to the KOA maintenance shed. Once the horses use the road to get to the stable there is nothing but noise from UTVs, trucks, large maintenance vehicles, etc. going back and forth. Not bad if you're a morning person and get up at 630AM everyday, but if you want to sleep in you won't be able to.

It isn’t as secluded as the photos make it appear (my daughter was excited to be fully private) there are cabins very near you and RVs, although it’s a bit off the beaten path. This actually ended up being a good thing, because the KOA campground has wonderful amenities that are safe, clean, and numerous. Instead of being in the middle of nowhere like we imagined, we were on the outskirts of this lively campground which we ended up loving.
The cabin itself is adorable and just how it is shown. Actually bigger than it looks in photos, The entire back of the cabin is just screens, you cannot shut the windows. They offer heated blankets in case it gets cold but the one thing my husband had a little bit of an issue with was the horses and camping near us created random sounds through the whole night and there is no getting away from it. Next time I will just bring him some earplugs :) but just in case someone reading this is also sensitive to sound.
In all it’s a wonderful property and we will definitely try to make it back! The KOA campground was walkable and right around the corner. The guided horse trails were fully booked, so if that interests you go check in right when you arrive so you don’t miss it. It’s also $60/hr per person, not including tipping the wrangler. We were able to get the last two spots and it was a wonderful experience.
Ps I LOVE the curtains and floral bowls. So cute. :) very clean, even in the rafters. Can’t really beat this property, if you have kids, this is a total gem.

Great family spot!
Beautiful cabin with all the amenities to make you feel right at home! We really enjoyed the kitchen and cooked most of our meals at the cabin. Great views and the cabin allowed for our three daughters to have an area of their own. Enjoyed access to the KOA pool as well!

It was the perfect place to forget about our worries and de-stress. Seclusion at the cabin, fun at the resort, and so much breath-taking beauty for miles all around.

Amazing!
This place was absolutely amazing! We thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular views from the screen porch and watching the horses go in and out each day. This place is truly charming and in a great location! It was a nice to have a private setting located next to all the KOA amenities and nearby attractions.

Amazing!
The cabin was incredible and the views were amazing. It can be a little cold sleeping on the porch but it's worth it for the views! Plus there are space heaters and heated blankets available. The availability of stuff at the KOA (putt-putt, swimming, playground) was a nice added bonus. We would definitely recommend staying here!

Priceless Memories!!
We stayed at The Haynes cabin for a family reunion and we thoroughly loved every minute!! Our other family members stayed at the cabins in the KOA but I booked They Hynes cabin as a bucket list love!! Always wanting to stay their!! Simply amazing!! The pictures don’t do it justice!! The views, the ambiance all just stunning!! The cabin was well stocked with everything you could possible need, a gas grill, crock pot, dishes cooking supplies and even some spices and condiments!! The scenery is amazing!! My grandsons loved the horses every morning and evening…. They were all Douglas!!! The beds were comfortable and we were plenty warm on chilly nights!! The KOA emmenities were included and again my grandsons loved the splash pad, heated pool, new playground and mini golf!! We rented a golf cart for 2 days and that was also helpful in the fact that our Hynes cabin was at one end of the campground and our other family members were in cabin3, opposite ends!! We loved everything about this cabin and we can’t wait to return!! Thanks so much for allowing us to create such priceless memories!!❤️
