We liked everything! Beautiful grounds to explore and such a wonderful variety of birds to watch, just sitting outside on the balcony. The chalets are really lovely, with very attractive woodwork, and the bed was very comfortable. Extremely knowledgable and helpful hosts. Super breakfast delivered to the chalet each evening, to be enjoyed the next morning when you decide. You cook your own eggs. Great idea!

Very warm welcome with homemade snacks/drinks and very friendly and helpful owners. So far our best stay in Costa Rica! All in very good condition and fully equipped. Attention to details. Easy communication. Great nature (birds, trail). Tasty homemade breakfast. Good location for visiting the Tenorio Park. Car parking just in front of the apartment.
Nothing. Just advice getting there by car as it is not on the main road.

Very well situated close to Rio Celeste. Various types of birds to see right outside our balcony. Breakfast was great. The owners, Eliette and Mark were great hosts and were very helpful.
Highly recommended.

The bungalow was beautiful inside and outside in a wonderful location. The warm hospitality of the hosts made our 3 night stay really special. We will be back for a longer stay. The location is ideal for exploring Tenorio NP and Rio Celeste area. It's about 3km from Bijagua on a good road.
Absolutely nothing.

The lodge was perfectly built : it's beautiful, decoration and accessories are modern and of good quality.
With no doubt the most comfortable place we've been to : it's like a studio with all the equipment needed, matress is of good quality with extra blankets, bathroom is spacious, extra clean and everything seems brand new.
The whole place is very quiet and we could observe the most amazing birds just in front of our terrace.
The home made breakfast were delicious and generous.
Thanks again for welcoming us. Hope we could have stayed more !

Our one night stay at Aves de Tierras Altas was a highlight of our week's vacation in Costa Rica. The host is a retired biology professor interested in conservation and sustainability, and her passion for connection to the environment is clear. The place to stay is fantastic— it's a cozy, inclusive cabin for a family, with modern facilities and beautiful hand-painted mural art on the walls. The cabin was spotless and well-appointed, with plenty of pillows, towels, and linens, as well as a flashlight for night excursions and two hammocks underneath the house for lounging. The kitchen is small but fully functional, with a stove, pots, pans, olive oil, knives, silverware, and anything you could need for cooking and eating, along with gorgeous polished wood countertops.
We very much enjoyed our breakfast delivered to our room the night before, full of local delicacies, eggs, toast and fresh fruit, some of which she grows on the property. From our private covered deck that overlooked a beautiful lush rainforest backyard, we were able to see so many incredible birds from just 20 feet away, including a toucan and other colorful animals. We saw more of Costa Rican bird wildlife from the deck than anywhere else during our vacation! We also were able to explore the hiking trails on the property, seeing a frog pond, orchids, and banana trees. The host and her family were so kind to us, sharing all kinds of valuable tips for exploring local hidden gems -- including the nearby restaurant Soda El Sabor de Dona Carmen, which had a fabulous menu and an incredible free butterfly garden.
If you are considering Tenorio Volcano park, the Rio Celeste hike, or the Bijagua area, you can't go wrong staying here.
Between Bijagua and the property, a short portion of the road is packed dirt and gravel. Simply driving slowly is enough to make it without issue.

This was truly an amazing stay, the breakfast was delicious, the view and animals were beautiful, and the hosts were so kind and informative. We learned so much during our visit and had the best time! Brea (the dog) and gata negra were such nice companions too!
The road going up to the house is rough, we did not have a 4x4 and made it just fine! Just be aware and drive cautiously, and it might help to arrive during daylight hours, but don't let it deter you from this place!

after traveling around this wonderful country for the last 15 years or so I can not stress enough this place is magical! Owner is amazing and informative! The property is a dream to stroll though the forest! Rooms have everything you need to just sit back and enjoy!

They met us on arrival and provided keys and a walk through the villa. Great breakfast, charming hosts, incredible views from the private porch. Nice nature trail on site with more nearby.
the road up to the property was dirt and stone but as long as you went slow it was easily navigable.

The lovely property is located on the lower slopes of a volcano (Tenorio) with views of a second one (Miravalles), surrounded by small farms. The hosts, Eliette and Mark are lovely people with vast knowledge of the local area and the history of Costa Rica. Eliette baked fresh bread for our breakfast which included fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade jam, tea and coffee. We were utterly enchanted by our hosts and learned so much from them. The cabins are beautifully appointed with beautiful wooden doors and furniture made of local hardwood.

The hosts were so very kind, they made us feel like family. Their dog and cat were so gentle with our 11 month old and provided countless hours of entertainment. Sitting on the balcony felt like a wilderness retreat with monkeys and Coatie coming to visit. The homemade bread and the beans and rice and salsa were delicious! I can't say enough about this wondeful piece of the world.
The water in the showed didn't get overly hot and the cook top took a long time to prepare meals but neither of those things would deter me from staying again... it was just that perfect!

If you are interested in staying at a beautiful bungalow hidden high in mountains covered with dense jungle and listen to a tremendous number of colorful birds singing, Aves de Tierras Altas is definitely the place for you. That's the place where you are actually waited for as a guest and you can tell it by looking at how much the owners care about every single detail to make your stay unforgettable. Even before the stay the owner was all set to answer all the questions I had and was very helpful. We received plenty of delicious homemade food for breakfast.

Our stay at Aves de Tierras was AMAZING! An absolutely beautiful property, and the room itself was so cute and in perfect condition. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home, shared travel tips, and made an exceptional breakfast every morning. I will definitely return next time I visit Costa Rica!

Everything about Aves de Tierras Altas is outstanding. The cabins are very clean and very modern, with fantastic views across the gardens and mountain beyond. We only stayed one night but wished we could have stayed longer - we saw plenty of birds and butterflies and even saw a sloth! The hosts are very kind and helpful, they spent a lot of time with us, sharing information about the surrounding wildlife and about Costa Rica in general. We highly recommend staying here, we didn't want to leave!
Nothing - it was absolutely fabulous

Beautiful cabins in a beautiful setting -- we could have sat on the terrese and watched the many birds feeding themselves all day! Host Eliette was welcoming and very helpful. Breakfast was simple but delicious. We really enjoyed our stay.

First of all, you are not going to find more wonderful hosts than Eliette and Mark. They were welcoming, gracious and incredibly helpful with all things local, from restaurants, to weather to hiking and driving directions. Eliette is a biologist and a wealth of knowledge for all that lives and breathes around this area. Just that alone would have been enough to make our stay exceptional. But the property and its location were amazing. There is a short drive off the highway 6 up to their property that becomes a little steep and bumpy, (the last sections are unpaved but very manageable in a sedan) but makes for some incredible views of the valley on the way down. The property is immediately adjacent to a national park and so you feel like you are right there in the jungle, but safe and sound in your brand new casita. There are two individual and private casitas on stilts looking right out into the trees and vines with exotic birds flying through. The deck sits perfectly to view the beauty while well protected from the rains storms that cruise by.
Our breakfasts were wonderful - a combination of fresh fruits, eggs, local breads and homemade jams, yoghurt, granola, Costa Rican coffee - we ended up having an early coffee and light breakfast followed by eggs and toast and more coffee later in the morning, all sitting out on the deck reveling in the sights and sounds of the rain forest. There lovely black lab would come down and joins us which helped us not miss our own dogs too much.
Just 300 m up the road is a beautiful hanging bridge park with a hike that sends you right into the rain forest. 20 minutes after checking in at the Aves de Tierras Altas we were face to face without first sloth. Incredible!
The wi-fi was not strong at the cabin (the price you pay for being so close to the Volcano and jungle) but Mark and Eliette were so welcoming for us to come up to the house and sit inside or outside where the wi-fi is stronger while we checked our email and even brought us coffee, beer and home made apple pie!
