The neighborhood

The Colonial Zone / Old Town is both an important historical site and a vibrant neighborhood that is currently experiencing a cultural and economic renaissance.

Founded in 1498, the Santo Domingo Colonial Zone is the oldest European settlement in the New World. In 1990, the entire area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Colonial Zone is a wonderland of historic Spanish Colonial buildings and monuments. Yet, the area is so much more than a mere open-air museum. It is a bustling district filled with shops, restaurants, cafes and night clubs. The vibrant street life, incredible live music performances and beaAutiful parks and squares make the Colonial Zone a prime tourist destination.

This amazing historical area features some of the oldest buildings in the New World. Top attractions include the Catedral Primada de América, the first cathedral in the Americas, and the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus' son. Other attractions include the Convento de los Dominicos, the first monastery in the Americas, and Ozama Fortress, the oldest fortress in the New World.

The Santo Domingo Colonial Zone also has beautiful parks and squares. Parque Colón, in front of the cathedral, is the perfect place to take a break and watch the people strolling by. Plaza de España is an enormous square lined with some of the area's best restaurants. It is also the backdrop for live music and dance performances every Friday and Saturday evening.

The Ruins of the San Francisco Monastery are another setting for live music. Every Sunday night, locals and tourists gather to enjoy a lively evening of Latin music and dancing.

Visitors staying in the Colonial Zone will find that everything is within easy walking distance. The hotels are near all of the top attractions, as well as great shopping, fine restaurants and fun night clubs.

The Colonial Zone is an amazing tourist destination that offers something for everyone.

This is a great place to stay for a large group. It’s just outside the colonial zone and minutes from the malecon. The upstairs with a large table and seating area and outside small cold pool and grilling area is a great place to hang out. I’d recommend the property overall, but… Some cons: The house is older and may not have all the conveniences you are used to. The lighting in the house at night is dim. Bathrooms have no vanity lighting. The lower floors don’t get much natural light and feel a bit cramped with little room for suitcases (outside the 2 large rooms). The villa was super responsive to our feedback and fixed a list of 12 issues we had with the property including some maintenance problems and needing blankets on the bed.

We Greatly Appreciated being allowed to enter the home early. Beautiful home with convenient location. But for the price, we would have appreciated hand soap in the bathrooms especially during a pandemic, blankets in the rooms and I recommend adding to your welcome guide directions on getting hot water for showers as all but one room was able to get a hot shower on the first night and were unable to get to watch tv in individual rooms. Internet also only worked in common area. Extra garbage bags would have been nice in the kitchen. We were asked if we wanted the housekeeper service and said yes but no one ever showed up. The night security was a plus in a big city.

Excellent experience
Excellent experience
Really enjoyed our experience. The location in the old section of Santo Domingo meant an easy walk to most places. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. The house was well appointed and perfectly suited my extended family, including two 6 year olds. The best part was the housekeeper - Celeste is an absolutely wonderful person. She is hardworking, kind and has a permanent, genuine smile on her face. She went out of her way, taking us around town to help us find the right kind of flowers for a wedding. The only negative was that we had no hot water. Attempts were made to fix the problem but it didn't happen before our departure.
